Hold The Phone

Ken Campbell at THE HOCKEY NEWS unleashed an article on Jagr today.

“I was thinking about it and if Mario would call me and say, ‘I’d like you to play for our team,’ I would think about it a lot,” Jagr said in a telephone interview from Moscow where the Kontinental League will hold its inaugural All-Star Game outdoors at Red Square Saturday. “I would play for the minimum salary. I would play for $350,000 just for him because I owe him my hockey life. I want to pay him back because he has made me what I am…besides my parents.”

This is not a joke. This is real.

To further this theres a Puck Daddy write up on how the Avangard coach was fired during the second intermission of a game recently. But the original article states that his team is so rich that the oil issues arent affecting them...i doubt this is anything major.

Unfortunately, there is no transfer agreement between the NHL and KHL, but as others had noted, the KHL is really hurting for money, and if Jagr asked, he might be allowed out of his contract for the next season.

If they could find a way, I'd say fuck yeah. I'd dig my Jagr jersey out of the closet and wear it every day until they won a stanley cup.

I Have Kasparaitis said...

I disagree with you Rage. I'm not saying the money part is true (or any of it actually), but the way he feels about Mario Lemieux and what the man has done for him, he would respect the team enough to suck up some of his pride and live without the captaincy. I don't think people give Jagr enough credit for being a good guy. He may have been dying alive here, but he isn't that bad of a person or a locker room cancer and consider what was happening during the time. He helped out Kaspar out a lot in NY when Renney was trying to screw him over and he did try to save Cherepanov. Jagr has his faults, but if he was willing to come back to the Pens, I would welcome him with open arms. I'm not saying he would but ehh if the team's chemistry is already struggling, how bad would it be to put Jagr in who has veteran experience, can shoot and score when he's on the ice, and is close friends with Mario?

This is probably not realistic but if it was, I would be on board like I was in the off-season for him (which was also unrealistic.)

Nulpher said...

Do it RS, DO IT!

Getting JJ for minimum cap hit would be epic. We get a proven right wing that we know can perform when paired up with a world class center (He and Lemieux just raped the poor goalies that they were up against). Kills that scoring winger problem for only pennies.

Rage said...

Don't think I wouldn't cheer for him IHK, but he is what he is. Email Greg DiP, who will tell you the story of how Mario DID call JJ during the SCF last year, when JJ laughed him off. Guy is pampered, spoiled, and a prima donna, and could do real harm, BUT then again, maybe he's a new man...just my opinion, but leopards, spots, all that.

brett said...

that sure would be something.

by the way, apparently our game-day was jinxed.

Nulpher said...

Jagr probably laughed it off since you cannot really trade and bring in someone during the SCF.

Rage said...

@Nulpher-no, ya nitz, he was telling him that if he came back to finish his career and leave the right way, all the fans that boo him now would embrace him as a hero, etc, etc...not to try to sign him during the SCF...sheesh

I Have Kasparaitis said...

Besides there are probably too many complications to make this possible, so what I am saying is basically is that I like Jagr regardless of being a mess like he has been.

I never heard about that, Rage, but the way Mario and Jagr are, I highly doubt Jagr would disrespect Mario. Mario would make trips up to NY to hang out with Jagr, and Jagr constantly talks about Mario (his Sid and Geno comment was basically a compliment to Mario more than a put-down to the guys because he feels that strongly about Mario and what he has done in his career and for him.)

FireFox said...

We need 66 to bury that deal!

Rage said...

I would not be devastated by his return, nor would I be displeased by eating all my words about him if he came back all class and really did finish the right way. It would be an awesome storybookish thing for the team AND the city. I'm just cynical...REAL cynical. I've been wrong before, though. just sayin...and it would be a huge "pick-me-up" for the fanbase...

It's been well documented that Jagr basically idolizes Lemieux. He's been saying it for as long as I can remember. I believe him when he says he'd play for Mario if asked. I'm not sure I believe it would be for league minimum, but he's worth more than that anyway.

For as much of a love/hate relationship as Pens fans have with the guy, anybody who wouldn't jump at this is nuts IMO. I've always thought that Jags was a bit of a scapegoat for other problems the team was having anyway and that, despite my name in his honor, his comments were blown out of proportion.

Plus Jags could potentially retire from the NHL as a Penguin, which would be fitting.

Not to mention the hilarity that would ensue if Jagr moved into his house here and was roommates with Sykora. Imagine the episodes of Pens TV!

TheSteelPen66 said...

Dont get to worked up people the first sentence of the article (and the one before the posted excerpt) is...

Jaromir Jagr said he has no designs on returning to the NHL in the short term, but if he ever did return he would be happy to go back to the Pittsburgh Penguins to play for his former idol, Mario Lemieux.

IF this happens it looks doubtful that it will be this or even next season. I know all about the reports of economic collapse in the KHL and I believe it is true, how ever it is not affecting the entire league.

The interview said...

"There are reports that players are taking a 40-percent pay cut across the board, something Jagr says is untrue."

Jagr was however only speaking of his team in Omsk, he said he was unaware of any pay cuts on other teams. Even if it is occurring on other teams, if its not effecting Omsk, it wont help Jagr get out of his contract.

The reason Omsk isnt having the same kind of problems as some of the other teams in the KHL is because it is not as reliant on the State owned oil companies that own most of the other teams. Omsk is partially financed by the Russian oil company Sibneft but most of its budget comes from local taxes in the Russian province Omsk Oblast.

So as awesome as this idea might be it really cant happen, unless of course the Avangard organization begins feeling the effects of the economic crisis.

If Jagr is serious he could just pull a Malkin and simply leave, but that would cause all kinda of law suites and injunctions to e dealt with, but Malkin had to deal with that to and hes still here.

As unlikely as this is I still think it would be INCREDIBLE to see Jagr back.

But for the Quote he gave about owing Lemieux his hockey life I think the booing (should he ever comeback to the NHL) should stop.

Allison said...

I was always a big Jagr fan when he was playing here. Never realy understood the need to boo him. Honestly, if you watched this team in the 90s, I don't know how you could. Yeah, he's a bit of a brat, and a prima donna, I suppose, but I always thought he got a bad rap. Even the "Dyink Alive" business...it's hilarious, and I still say it all the time...but I think the dude was just depressed, and blurted something he shoudn't've. Didn't he used to gamble quite a bit. Hell, that'd do it right there.

Actually, if Jagr balks on his contract, I don't think any judge here would issue an injunction. Russia and the US don't seem to honor each others contracts, even if they're legit (Malkin's wasn't, who signs a contract at 2 AM?) but look at Radulov. He had an NHL contract and left.

As far as I'm concerned, fuck Russia and their shitty hockey league with 3rd world medical care. I stopped hating on Jags after realizing the whole "dying alive" comment wasn't a reference to not liking Pittsburgh. I'm glad I'm not the only one that sees the KHL as more then just another hockey league. I mean, every other league whether it be the joke DEL or the moderatly respectable SM-Liiga takes care of the players. Cherepanov's death was a fucking travesty and joke. Consider also that when in discussions for contracts it's part of the contract to have a fucking bodyguard There should be no one in that league.

Flyer Hater said...

Anyone who wouldn't like to see Jagr back is not a Penguins fan. BUT, BUT, HE'S A LOCKER ROOM CANCER OMGZZZ!!!!

He's the 2nd greatest player in franchise history and an inspired Jagr could still score 50 goals. But Shero will never try, because Satan and Dupuis are permanent fixes and will one day score 70 by just having Crosby throwing the puck off their fatasses.

Jokes.

KrisR said...

@Dixie Normess, @The Goon Blogger - Both of your points are well taken. And both are reasons for Jagr to leave. Cherepanov's death had an amazing impact and the fact the EMT weren't there (according to reports) was unreal. Firing a coach in the middle of a game? These are all poor indicators of the KHL.

I don't know. If Jagr came back to the Pens (and clearly money is not an issue for him, although who could say in this economy) who is to say how it would work?

The Staal contract could still be a good play for the Pens (http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/pit090108.html), but there needs to be something to spark them. For $350K, I suppose we could do a lot worse.

I booed Jagr. We loved him, he was God, he tore down coach after coach, he embarrassed his fellow players, but we loved him. He said he was dying alive in Pittsburgh. Call me a yinzer or a homer, but nobody insults my hometown.

That said, I want him to come home. I am a forgiving man. As a man who vehemently defends the likes of Jarkko Ruutu and on occasion Todd Bertuzzi, I would be remiss if I didn't defend Jags too. It would be a storybook ending. The fallen favorite son returns so that he made ride off into the son set one more time. Make it happen Shero so that I don't have ANY bad thoughts when 68 gets lifted to the rafters.

The Goon Blogger said...

Stamkos is the biggest bust since Hooty McBoob.

Why didn't Jagr say something before he signed to play in the KHL? Seriously. We wouldn't have had to sign Satan. It could've been storybook had he signed here in the offseason. I'd welcome him back with open arms right now though.

"Get over it, FH. Guy threw the team/town under a bus and rolled out. I'm good with that. Now's he to be the savior of this season?"

You're right, all us retards don't know what we're talking about. It's stupid to fantasize about having your franchise's 2nd best player come back for one last run. It's stupid to imagine the possibilities of Jagr playing with Crosby and having another outstanding postseason run.

We should just whistle past the graveyard and keep thinking that Miroslav Satan will start caring, or Max Talbot will remember how to play hockey, or that Shero will trade for Marian Hossa again at the deadline.

Jagr Sucks.

Joke.

The Goon Blogger said...

@richter

Because he hadn't seen how terrible the KHL is. Nor had he seen Cherepanov basically die in his lap.

Fuck the KHL.

Flyer Hater said...

Let's hope this latest news puts to bed the myth that Jagr was jealous of Lemieux and couldn't stand being in his shadow. Mario was always a father-figure to Jags.

Stoosh said...

Goon Blogger is dead on.

I'd love to see this franchise give Jagr the chance to complete the circle.

AHOJ!!!!!

I know it's been said but imagine the possibilities of the Crosby/Jagr duo...

True that, tGB. (Did I just say 'true that'?)

Also, another 2 points for Caputi in the WBS 4-2 win on Friday. Per JB, "In the second period, Caputi made a diving cross-ice pass from the left-wing corner to set up Pesonen all alone at the right post for a goal. A highlight reel play."

If I'm not mistaken that's now 21 points in the last 21 games. Just sayin.

Merx said...

Sounds like Pessi can finish sometimes too huh Meecro? Just sayin...

I also like Caputi....

guy's a team-killer, I'm tellin yinz...but hey, like I'm always saying, gotta love em whether they succeed or fail...he's not worth the baggage he carries, but I understand where panicky-ass everybody's coming from. Have at. He'll want the "C" or he'll pout and if you believe for one second that he'll play for 350 grand, you're delusional.

This.

Personally, I have no interest in getting Jagr back with the Penguins. He's past his prime, and didn't "leave" the Rangers because he just felt like it.

They weren't fighting to keep him, and the rest of the league wasn't fighting to pick him up. Yeah, it would be appropriate to bring him back to Pittsburgh to end his career, but I'll quit jobbing the Steelers before I believe that he doesn't care about taking minimum salary and not being the "star." Especially given a roster full of stars...

Could you imagine him playing under Therrien? Jagr would have a bitch fit in the first week.

-------------------------

On the other hand, Staal being traded for Mike Grier and a 6th round 2010 draft pick? Someone shine some light on me, is this a fucking joke?

Anyways, for GD character.

Lets go back to Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and see if he'll give us a repeat of what we saw when he was selected for the Islanders game.

FIX BAYONETS!

According to the NYT, Jagr's quite happy where he is.

Apologies for no linky on last comment, I keep forgetting and staff's removed the handy header from the page. Looks like the blog move will be soon, though.

This would be absolutely insane but I can't see this going down.

He obviously regrets making the move to the KHL, something that we all probably expected when considering the ego of this dude.

Anyone see Brashear sucker punch Boll last night?
Ugly.

cg said...

Tenko out 4-6 w/broken hand:

"The Pittsburgh Penguins say forward Ruslan Fedotenko will miss four-to-six weeks with a broken right hand.

Fedotenko injured his hand less than two minutes into Tuesday night's game against the Atlanta Thrashers in a one-punch fight against former Penguin Colby Armstrong.

Fedotenko decked Armstrong with the punch, although Fedotenko rarely fights.

The Penguins say Fedotenko has been placed on injured reserve."

anybody else watching the Russian All Star game right now??

No time for Russian ASG. Shovel Shovel Shovel. (Will it ever stop?!?!)

I think everyone here pretty much realizes that short of an outright collapse of the KHL, Jagr's chances of coming back to Pittsburgh this year sit somewhere between slim and none.

But the fact that it elicited this sort of overall reaction shows:

1. just how much most of the fans would still love to have him back, and

2. how much some of us are also hoping for some sort of shakeup over the next few weeks if the team keeps playing like this.

[HCTM's last game?]

Projected lines for today

Forwards
Kennedy-Crosby-Staal
Satan-Malkin-Sykora
Goligoski-Talbot-Cooke
Godard-Jeffrey-Wallace

Defense
Orpik-Whitney
Eaton-Boucher
Scuderi-Letang

Goalie
Fleury

So why exactly is Bobby Boucher playing? What has he done, offense or defense, that makes him more important than Gogo, our leading defensive goal scorer, or Gill, the PK beast?

Its nice to see Staal get another shot on the wing. The only way they are going to keep him long term is if he can prove that when needed at least, he can play wing. Maybe not as a permanent line mate, but during times like when 2 of our wingers are hurt (you know, like right now).

powerhouse said...

Jagr would help, hell try milk duds on their skates it could not get any worse.

However, it will happen as soon as winged monkies fly out of my ass. Big ones too. With wings. Got it staff.

Paul said...

Miyagi Gameday ... he's dead so no jinx.

fleuryous said...

Dear Lord, Gill...why can't the man just play? haha. At least he got to spend some quality time with his dad in Nashville...yeah.

Gill>Boucher and Eaton. Unless there are hidden motives...hmmm. I don't think Boucher and Eaton are bad defencemen, but Gill is pretty money.

kstewy16 said...

Gill and Gogo should both be playing, Boucher and Eaton don't deserve a roster spot. Thats 4.5 million i would rather see spent on another Satan. Seriously, thats how bad they are.

Rage said...

maybe they're getting time so they can be looked at for trade purposes? Wishful thinking?

kstewy16 said...

I thought about that Rage, I sure hope so, because anyone who would rather play Bobby Boucher than Alex Goligoski needs shot.

BlacknGold66 said...

Correct me if I'm wrong Kstewy, but according to your lines Goligoski IS playing.

(although perhaps not where you want him)

kstewy16 said...

He's "playing" yes, but I think you understand what I'm saying lol.

Dr. Turkleton said...

I have a feeling those 'projected' lines will be different in a couple hours after the morning skate...

Minard, possibly Dupuis and I'm betting the D configuration will be different due to their flop in Tennessee.

I know this has nothing to do with the game today. But I think everyone needs to read this. Read what this asshole has to say about Hockey fans http://joshisenberg.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Brett - uh, what?

First of all, everyone gets made fun of here. Ovechkin is not exempt, nor do we stay awake at night thinking about him.

Second of all, nobody is pinning their hopes on ex-Cap Gonchar. They're waiting for current Penguins player Gonchar - who happens to be pretty damn integral to this team - to come back from injury. I'm not sure I see the problem there.

dying alive said...

And referring to Jagr as an ex-Cap is just silly. The Caps are the last team that Jagr played for that anyone should associate him with. His best years were with the Pens.
