That'll Leave A Mark. PENS LOSE

[Picture+26.png][Picture+21.png]

Ummmm.

The Pens took a bus to Buffalo and back. Therrien just threw them under it.
"They're complaining on the bench...."

Chicken Little just booked a flight to Pittsburgh.

The red in the sky isn't Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, It's a panic button.

Stay the course.

crosby is trying to do too much, pretty much everybody is trying to do too much. each player just needs to know what he has to do to help the team win.

Sid's actually been a little under the weather recently, and it shows.

That said, I'm not panicking. But "They're complaining on the bench..." is something you NEVER want to see.. so hopefully peeps can get their shit together soon.

But tonight was awful. I have no energy after going to the game. It sucked it all out of me.

Whitney will be back to form soon enough.

pops said...

not concerned yet. but its damn well really fucking close to being seriously concerned time.

come on, guys.

PittHockey said...

there's a point where "stay the course" just gets you deeper into the hole you're digging.

Flyer Hater said...

Anyone who doesn't commit suicide, isn't a true fan.

Flyer Hater said...

"Whitney will be back to form soon enough."

The form that had him playing on the 4th line last year?

meecrofilm said...

Hopefully, this means at least one of either Zigo or TK will be back.

Flyer Hater said...

"there's a point where "stay the course" just gets you deeper into the hole you're digging."

By the hole you're digging, you mean a playoff position even though the team is playing like absolute shit? I know a lot of teams who would love to be in that "hole"

meecrofilm said...

No, I mean the form he was playing with before he played almost a full season on a shit foot. I should rephrase "game-shape" which implies improved playing.

Flyer Hater said...

"crosby is trying to do too much, pretty much everybody is trying to do too much. each player just needs to know what he has to do to help the team win."

What deep and insightful thoughts Mr. Bowman. With the team following vague generalities like this, the Pens have to get back on track.

meg said...

we need to shoot the puck, stop trying to make a highlight reel play every time. malkin and sid need to put it on net, so does staal.

on a lighter note, good to see whitney back.

Flyer Hater said...

"No, I mean the form he was playing with before he played almost a full season on a shit foot. I should rephrase "game-shape" which implies improved playing."

I know what you meant, I was just fucking with you.

Flyer Hater said...

"we need to shoot the puck"

Um, you kind of have to get the puck past your own blue line first.

PittHockey said...

and if the team keeps playing like absolute shit, they won't be in the playoffs.

I'm not saying that's going to happen, but therrien really needs to light a fire under their ass.

Dixie Normess said...

The atmosphere was godawful there tonight.

Therrien will get them motivated to take four points over the weekend.

If not, I suggest taking them all out and getting them loaded, Slapshot-style. Build some comradery.
First round's on me.

The Goon Blogger said...

Ha, FH is out for blood tonight. Good times.

I'm glad HCMT had a classic meltdown presser. We'll see something happen because of it, good or bad. Things are gonna change one way or another.

I mean, hopefully of course.

pops said...

dont get me wrong, i love zigo and TK, but at some point you have to realize that the reason the pens are playing shitty isnt because they're missing a 3rd and a 4th liner...

i feel for therrien. i really do. he cant do shit. i mean, its not like he can go out and play for these guys, and if they dont have the work ethic, there is just so much begging, pleading, intimidating, whatever you can do.

shitty situation. people that are screaming for his head dont understand that its entirely a player attitude problem, and not a player talent or coaching problem.

Flyer Hater said...

"and if the team keeps playing like absolute shit, they won't be in the playoffs."

Yeah, with powerhouses like Carolina, Buffalo, and Florida chasing the Pens, the season has almost reached the point of no return. It's only a matter of time until the Pens are mathematically eliminated.

meecrofilm said...

goddamnit, FH. You would too. I thought you'd only job people making retarded comments. I guess to keep it real everyone needs to be jobbed from time to time.

Fire Therrien, hire Eddie Johnston.

Allison said...

@pops- I'd say Zigo could have a big impact due to his role in puck posession. Which is kindof key to winning games.

The Goon Blogger said...

@pops

An argument can be made that it is a coach's responsibility to motivate the team.

I just don't understand the "complain about each other on the bench" bit. There aren't too many new faces that there could be a poison on the Pens bench, is Satan, Tenk, Cooke, Go-Go, or Godard causing that big a problem? Because that's basically it.

Flyer Hater said...

"goddamnit, FH. You would too. I thought you'd only job people making retarded comments. I guess to keep it real everyone needs to be jobbed from time to time."

I knew tonight panic was going to be everywhere, I had to send a message by not only going after the 4th liners but taking a run at a first liner.

pops said...

and to add... are we surprised? at least last year they had roberts, whether on ice or not, to be a fucking intimidating factor. at least you knew there was a veteran guy on the team that showed insane work ethic every damn game. i understand he's old and no i dont want him back. im just saying that this team is missing that "holy crap, we better skate or roberts is gonna be pissed" father figure. gonchar will add that, sure. he has that quiet way about him that goes a long way in a locker room, but thats a while off. i love that sid is a friendly guy to everyone and all that, its awesome for chemistry, but i sometimes think that he needs a little more being pissed off and developing that intimidation factor that people look up to in a locker room. fuck, i know he's young and i know it will come at some point. just saying. ah hell, i dunno where im going with this. would just like to see commitment. its funny, im not even angry with these guys, just really fucking disappointed...

merry christmas everybody

meecrofilm said...

@pops.

I never said. But obviously Zigo and TK are a big upgrade over Taffe and Wallace, respectively. But it's not like the former haven't been playing decent hockey at least over the past couple games anyways.

Also Fleury is not getting it done. I have no confidence that he can pull out a 2-1 or 1-0 win right now. He will give up one barasso goal a game. Like a kick in the teeth.

We need Gill back. Need to resign him yesterday.

@meecrofilm

im a big fan of wallace. id love to see him stay with the big club. zigo is a beast and it sucks that they've been saying his injury wasn't serious, when it seems like its been forever. overall im still pretty happy with the season so far, even the recent slide in mind. its a marathon, and i know it will irk people to hear that, but look at ottawa last year. they blew their load in the first half of the season and then went limp.

Flyer Hater said...

"Also Fleury is not getting it done. I have no confidence that he can pull out a 2-1 or 1-0 win right now. He will give up one barasso goal a game. Like a kick in the teeth."

Yeah, Fleury was the obvious problem tonight. I mean we didn't lose because Sykora was drunk and forgot where the net was 5 times, it wasn't because Max Talbot is the most worthless hockey player of all time and took a retarded double-minor and the least opportune time, it wasn't because the Penguins had a combined sustained forecheck of 10 seconds all night long.

I would say joke, but you would give a bad name to jokes worldwide.

PittHockey said...

whoa there.

Talbot bashing is just taking it too far.

Dixie Normess said...

NO problem with Fluery's efforts tonight, especially considering he just back in the saddle and it was the 2nd night.

I'm not one for calling out players, but Sykie needed to bury that break away in the 2nd. And Sid should have put home Malkin's drop-pass like 5 minutes later.

PittHockey said...

I honestly don't think Talbot has been fully healthy since the day before his high ankle sprain. Dude's been getting his ass banged-up all season so far. Even with the shell on his skate he took a nasty shot to the foot earlier.

That being said, if you're not healthy enough to do your job effectively, then you shouldn't be playing.

The Goon Blogger said...

Malkin shouldn't have even done that to begin with. Who the fuck does he think he is, Charlie Conway in Mighty Ducks 3? Ridiculous.

pops said...

its safe to say that if sabou was in net itd be like a 5-0 loss, with the back boards getting at least 3 assists

Druk post from someone who was there at the game tonight..... sid didn't llook anything specfial... he had maybe one or two rushes up the ice tonight, and didnt create jack shit. pops said...

jesus, whats next?

are we selling the team to KC too?

Josh said...

I know Malkin missed 2 breakaways and sykora missed a net but Fleury was flat outpalyed by mike smith. The goals he has given up in the past few games have been a little soft. If he is a going to be an anchor on this team he needs to pull out a win when the Pens as a team don't deserve it. I don't see him doing that right now. I hope he shuts my mouth and has three shutouts in a row on his way to starting in the all star game.

The Goon Blogger said...

@pops

Ha, I said that in the vein of FH's classic: "Pens aren't making the playoffs." In game day.

Well, I technically just said Buries It should sell the team, but close enough.

Alright here it is from my perspective.

The O is stranding the D in our own zone. The D generated one fucking shot tonight. They are doing very little to help the O in the defensive zone. This lack of cohesiveness got worse as the game went on. It's official we lost to Tampa Bay and outshot 29-16 we are at rock bottom (I hope.)

We are a speed transition team and coaching is failing to get the most of our strength. Tampa is a big slow team that will outmuscle you if you let them. We are not utilizing this and it is crippling the team. I have never been impressed with Yeo and right now Therrien is failing to get the most out of his players.

Oh and go to the net and shoot the fucking puck, Please!

I'm done.

I should be a good mark of how bad Nik Antropov is because I'm basically Don Cherry's polar opposite when it comes to Russian players. I fucking Love Russian players (See: Morozov) and for me to say Antropov is garbage, Antropov is fucking G-A-R-B-A-G-E.

Granted, Antropov is technically from Kazakhstan, but it was the USSR when he was born there. So, Russian. Unlike Nabby though, he doesn't have dual citizenship with Russia so he can play internationally for them. Most likely because he sucks and the Russians don't want him either.

I'm not positive that's where people were, I just assume so, the Steelers take over everything in this town from July-February, and even the rest of the year, they talk about them constantly.

It just amazes me how much people forget after just a couple of weeks. Wasn't Sid the first star for the NHL a few weeks ago? Blowing everyone away? And now he's got "no heart" and is "a locker room cancer"?

Not to go all LGP on you guys, but I have to call it like I see it. I think our captain needs to show some positive energy out there on the ice.

I don't give a damn what he does or who he yells at in the locker room, because that's the team's domain and we don't have any business seeing that stuff. But when you yell at teammates on the ice in front of 17,000 folks and (more importantly) the TV cameras, that's just needlessly embarrassing the people you have to go to war with.

I've seen a few too many comments in the media coverage of the Pens concerning how certain players are "scared" to play with Sid (read: Jeff Taffe earlier in the week). While that stuff may be said partially in jest, a lot of truth comes out when you joke. I've seen Sid scream at Syko and a few D men a ton this season, and there's no call for that when it's that obvious.

I've never had a bad word to say about 87 and his character/desire to win, but he's got to know that while some people might respond to berating, others need encouragement. That's what every coach tries to find out when he starts with a team: who can I kick in the ass and who do I need to pat on the back.

The negative energy has been building all through this month, and I agree with whoever said that they need to all go out and get blitzed and have a good time. We need some bonding on this club. If we can't find the chemistry, it's time to change the cast of characters.

In Shero we trust...he knows what's going on and no one's more concerned about it than him.

Merry Christmas/Festivus. (That was my Airing of Grievances.)

Stilly said...

Wow Flyer Hater is in the best shape of his life.

The two goals that TB scored were not soff goals that Fleury screwed up on, the D left him out to dry again. For as good as Goligoski is in the offensive zone, he's not so good in the defensive zone. I feel like Letang was missed last night.

Other than that, the forwards just couldn't work the puck through the neutral zone. When that happens that you absolutely have to bury any chances you get. Sykora whiffed on two, and cute passing hosed up some others. Mike Smith was solid when he needed to be.

Of course he didn't need to be solid too often, seeing as the Pens couldn't sustain any kind of forecheck.

I haven't watched the post game press conference with Therrien, but I'm curious as to what kind of complaining the team is doing. The absolute worst thing that can happen is for Therrien to lose the locker room. If they're complaining about his decision making, they're not going to play hard for him or buy into his system.. that's bad news.

Hopefully the guys take this break to reflect and come back and rally together.

Good players, good coach...good team. Don't jump off the bridge yet folks.

Remember, remember the month of November. 9-2-1. They can get back there. They just have to want it.

Natalie said...

@Matt:

To an extent I see where you're coming from, but at the same time, okay, Jeff Taffe shouldn't be afraid of playing with Crosby. You know why?

Because he's a borderline NHL player, and therefore his name should NEVER appear next to Crosby's on the lineup. Never. People are complaining about Crosby's demeanor right now, but really, at what point in his career has he had such screwed up linemates? On one wing it's whatever 3rd/4th liner/AHL call-up Therrien puts there on that given shift. On the other wing he's got a guy who floats around hoping that 1) Sid can find him with a pass and 2) he doesn't get hit/have to work along the boards.

Even when he was stuck with Recchi and Armstrong nightly--at least then Crosby's wingers would TRY. They couldn't always finish plays, but they would at least ATTEMPT to get open, to work along the boards, etc. And this is coming from someone who was thrilled when both Recchi and Armstrong were gone. At least they both TRIED when they were on Sid's wing. I'd love to see half that much effort from Satan.

I find it hard to fault a guy who will do anything, give anything to win, who cares more about winning than his personal stats, who has been in the top 10 (or on pace to be in the top 10) in scoring every single season he's played, who has taken this team from obscurity and near collapse to being a Cup contender. There is NO ONE more upset about this streak than Crosby, and if he takes it out by snapping at his linemates for not attempting to keep up, so be it. If they can't take it, they can see their way to the door, as far as I'm concerned.

Stoosh said...

@ Matt -

I agree with a lot of what you say, but I'm not sure it's just Sid that's doing it. The bench seemed pretty animated at times last night. Orpik seemed to be pretty fired up a couple of times. I saw Scuds getting kind of worked up as well once or twice.

What I hate to see is Sid taking the brunt of the criticism for this because he wears the "C" and because he has a tendency to be so vocal.

But I've seen a lot of the same things you've seen with him, and I do have to wonder how certain players are responding to it.

It's tough because it's hard to question his effort night in and night out. There are things about the way he's playing that I don't care too see - too many blind drop passes...too many times he's looking to pass, period. Maybe he needs to be a little more selfish in that regard. But it's still hard to question his effort night in and night out, especially when it seems so many other players are going through the motions. Talbot, for instance, had one of his more visible games in a long time - bad penalties aside - and he didn't do anything special last night, so that speaks volumes about where his play has been.

Some of the stuff that you described might need to be dialed down a bit; if it's causing problems and Therrien hasn't pulled him aside about it, I'm sure Shero or Mario will.

Even Madden seemed to hint at it yesterday on his show, saying something to the effect that Sid needs to realize who his linemates are and start simplifying his game. It could start with something as simple as Sid shooting the puck more and telling his off-wing to drive to the net for a rebound or a quick one-touch play to an open net; it's very similar to what Lemieux used to tell Morozov to do, and that worked wonders when the two of them played together.

Stilly said...

@Natalie

That's the kind of shit that will ruin a locker room. Team unity goes a long way toward game performance. If the players don't trust each other, they won't be successful on the ice.

I just watched Therrien's post game tirade and it sounds like the guys are blaming each other instead of trying to work together. That's a problem. Therrien and the brain trust need to figure out a way to get the guys motivated to work together. I know Sid and Geno are trying too hard, but hell someone has to.

I completely agree with your assesment of Satan. I've never seen someone so soff along the boards. He doesn't hit anyone. This team lacks guts and that comes from the players.

Crosby needs to step up and unify the guys. It's Therrien's job to point out what players are doing wrong. It's Crosby's job to make sure they pick up their game.

powerhouse said...

Was at the game last night. SATAN = 0 forecheck and I mean NONE all night long. So who is put on the ice with 2:35 in the game? Yes the same SATAN. Sorry thats bad coaching.

The lack of cohesiveness between the team got worse as the night went on. Once again we failed to utilize our speed our greatest asset. Looking at the program Tampa on average out weighed us by 20 lbs. Yet we continued to try to grind with them and not utilize our strength.

There is a disconnect between the O and the D in both zones with each apparenty expecting the other to handle getting the puck out and on net.

There is poor puck protection where you surround the puck to maintain or get possession. Since we are a puck possession team this is a death sentence and the lack of sustained offense and running around in our own end is evidence of that.

The current meltdown seems to be getting worse and not better so I have to say I am concerned. With all due respect to staff staying the couse is not the answer and something has to give. There is no flow to the Pens game and you can see the joy has gone out of it for them. If it doen't improve soon management will be forced to shake things up.

After we were trounced in Philly, I thought "okay, that's the wake up call we needed".

The after the Toronto game, I thought "okay, now the boys are going to wake up".

After last night's fun fest with Tampa Bay, I think the Pens need a new alarm clock.

It'll be interesting to see if HCMT clarifies the "complaining" remarks that he made in the press conference; when he was asked a follow up question about that topic, he didn't elaborate too clearly...

Great work with the MiLF fundraiser! It is a Happy Festivus, indeed.

Miroslav Satan is a complete waste of space. Unless he is in tight with the goalie halfway in the runway, he's useless. He makes John LeClair look like Brett Hull.

"I know Malkin missed 2 breakaways and sykora missed a net but Fleury was flat outpalyed by mike smith. The goals he has given up in the past few games have been a little soft. If he is a going to be an anchor on this team he needs to pull out a win when the Pens as a team don't deserve it. I don't see him doing that right now. I hope he shuts my mouth and has three shutouts in a row on his way to starting in the all star game."

Gee, thanks for the wonderful input again Mr. Roy. Have you ever watched a hockey game or any sport for that matter before this game? Seriously, it's people like you who make me want to lose faith in humanity.

@Natalie:

I'm with you on the fact that Sid is the example and everyone in the league would be well-served to take some pointers on his intensity, game preparation, etc. You won't find a bigger Crosby fan than me, but as much as we all want to ignore it, he's acting out his frustration and that's not helping anything. Madden is right: Sid's got to realize who he's playing with and not expect Miro Satan to do the same things that Hossa did. I realize it's gotta be frustrating to get within two games of the Cup and not get a decent crack at trying again with the same group. But that's the salary cap for you...if we don't like it, we could go back to being outspent. (Although with the way Ron Burkle is pouring money into the franchise plus the new arena, we might actually do fairly well without the cap nowadays...but no use thinking about that.)

@Stoosh:

I think we all have to remember that Sid has a lot to learn yet in the league; it's only his fourth season and he just turned 21. Remember Mario had to deal with shit for linemates for a while at the beginning of his career, so he had to learn how to make the best of it.

Having Hossa on the squad has turned out to be a mixed blessing, since now Sid knows what he's missing when he skates without an elite finisher on the wing. Thinking about it now, I'd rather the Pens not grab another rental winger at the deadline or whereabouts...but they might not have a choice. There is a window with the current group, and Shero knows he has to push the envelope to give his club the best shot possible at the Cup.

Bottom line: Growing pains. But that doesn't mean we have to just stand pat and wait for things to get better. Fortune favors the bold. Go Pens.

I don't know if it needs to be a "rental" winger.

We have a surplus of mobile, puck-moving defensemen. With the exception of Gonchar, they're all young under relatively cap-friendly deal, and they always say trade from your strengths.

I think Shero can possibly work a deal - depending on how things sort themselves out over the next couple of months - for a younger winger who fits in with the rest of the core. He's going to have to get creative.

Do we even have a top line anymore? Does anyone actually get the feeling that when Dupuis, Satan and Sid hit the ice, they are even going to produce a solid scoring chance? We're playing with about 1.5 lines right now, and when Kennedy comes back, maybe we will be able to roll two solid lines out there again, but the top line is a joke and will continue to be as long as Satan and Dupuis are forced to skate on it.

Glad to hear Festivusblog went off so well. Christine and I were planning on going and unfortuantely, I caught a pretty nasty cold Monday morning and was unable to shake it by last night. I know...I know...Malkin, Crosby and several others would've played through the cold and shown up anyway, but I just wasn't feeling up to it after I got home from work.

Back to the ice...

The longer this goes on, the more I think some sort of shakeup is going to happen. I don't THINK it's the coaching; this feels a bit more like 2005-06 after Therrien took over, which it was clear there were certain players who weren't cutting it and they were subsequently shipped out of the organization - same thing with the early part of last year, particularly with Rex. When it was clear he wasn't a fit for that role, they moved him.

One thing I like about Shero is that he's never wasted a lot of time in making changes once he determines that something isn't working.

They have time to turn it around and i feel that they can, but i also agree with you about the shake up, whoever may be leaving.

The other thing someone alluded to was something Pensblog Adam was saying to me last night: the Pens have scored some 113 goals this year and Geno and/or Sid have figured into 101 of them. If that's not a problem, then i don't know what one is.

@ Rage -

Born in 1975 (August 15), so I just passed 33. The Seahawks were my first favorite pro sports team...I think I started rooting for them around 1982. My dad and I would watch football on Sundays and also watch Inside the NFL on HBO, and I think what drew me to the Hawks at first was the logo. Shortly afterwards, I discovered Steve Largent, who instantly became my favorite player and is still my favorite player ever (just ahead of Mike Alstott, Curt Warner and Troy Polamalu).

I can STILL name most of the starters and some of the backups from those mid-to-late 1980s Seahawks teams.

I still remember The Boz. I remember the Boz getting lit up on Monday Night Football by Bo Jackson like it was yesterday.

Even moreso, I remember Largent laying an absolute decleater on Mike Harden of the Broncos during an ESPN Sunday Night game. Mike Patrick about crapped himself during the call (the audio on that clip is not Patrick).

Those were the teams I grew up with. I'm the same way with those Canucks teams of the early 1990s. Not sure why I remember this stuff, but I do.

I'm expecting NWChica to chime in any minute now, too. :)

Flyer hater = CBlog 1st star for this week, based on today alone.

And wilsmith, if I'm not allowed to make long rambling inane posts, I've got nothing, man. I have dysentery of the keyboard and there's no cure!

Anyone who wants to blame either Fleury or Sid should kill themselves.

Anyone who's "afraid" to play with Sid should be shipped off to Russia immediately because they ain't fit to play in this league. Lead, follow or get the fuck out of the way.

I've been a relentless Satan defender since the season started, but the man needs to start showing some emotion out there. At this point, I'd be willing to have him moved along with one of our surplus defensemen and Jeff "the Cowardly Lion" Taffe. Maybe the three could bring a decent young winger who could grow with Sid.

Although at this point, it's a good thing we have "surplus" defensemen, so you can probably ignore that preceding paragraph.

Even though his numbers are below where I could wish them, I'd keep Tenk over Satan right now. He's scrappy and plays with a lot of emotion and has gotten better as the season progresses. That's what I want. Satan has started to stagnate.

Also, Sykora...WTF? I want him kept, but, dude....two wide open nets? C'mon now. You're better than that. He'll still score 30 goals this season though. FAITH~!

Fleury:

10-5-2, .905 sv%

Yeah, that Fleury. Wow. No good.

The 3.01 GAA isn't exactly stellar, but considering how many times he's been hung out to dry lately by the defense--especially on the power play--that I'm willing to cut him some slack.

I really think another problem is consistency. Not just in play, but in the lineup. As goes my motto, champions find a way to overcome, but at some point the lack of line continuity is going to bite you in the ass, no matter how much talent a team has.

Also, other people have hit on this, but it's been annoying me so I have to say it: The fans. Jesus. Where's that rockin' Igloo from last season? Where's the rallying chants of "Let's Go Pens!" when the game seems about to slip away. I've heard them on occasion, but not enough.

I wonder if the Pens have become so super-trendy that WAY too many "Let me wear my Steeler jersey" or "Let me pay $500 for tickets on a date so I can try to fuck this chick" douchebag fans are attending.

The Pens drew MAJOR inspiration from the crowds last season, especially in the playoffs. And while it's unreasonable to expect every home game to have that intense playoff electricity, it's also FAR below what it should be.

Though I guess in truth, it's far far preferable to the alternative so maybe I shouldn't bitch too much.

wilsmith said...

It's fortunate that your message to me was early in your post, Raybin, otherwise I wouldn't have made it to it.

The problem with Satan is that, aside from that split second his stick makes contact with the puck and he puts it in the net, he is completely useless. Sure, his goals total will look good so people can say, "yeah well he's doing what he's supposed to be doing," but he hurts the team horribly in other areas. He causes almost as much harm as good. I know +/- is far from a precise way to measure a player, but compare his +/- and point totals to other guys with similar points.

Of all the things Shero has done, this is really the only one I've questioned.

debrisslide said...

Yeah, Satan's +/- rating is a little telling. I'm pretty sure it's just the numerical translation of "Man, this guy is shit along the boards."

"Get fucking nasty" is all I would say to the team right now. Followed by, "And if you don't, you're gone."

Flyer Hater said...

The only two stats I look it when it comes to goaltenders are wins and save percentage. Obviously, when a goalie is facing 40 shots a night, his GAA is going to be inflated but if his Save percentage is above .900, the goalie is doing his job.

wilsmith said...

Working the boards is an art form.
That, and you have be downright nasty.

Some guys just can't hack it.

kstewy16 said...

GAA is a bullshit stat. Obviously Osgood's GAA is going to be better than a goalie who sees more than 15 shots per night. But put the two of them on the same team and Osgood will give up 5 goals on 35 shots while the other goalie gives up 3.
But if you talk to any Wings fan Osgood is the god of hockey because his GAA is so low.

(all of this has to do with last year, cus this year the Wings defense is balls and Osgood sucks dick.)

Stoosh said...

Debris's post on Satan's plus/minus got me going here, so pardon me for my little rant, but...

How in the hell is Max Talbot a minus-13 in 31 games?

MINUS THIRTEEN? Are you kidding me?

Those are Rico Fata numbers. It's awful when you consider that there's no one relatively close to him; the next closest regular is Miro with a -5.

Look, I understand that this team has more significant issues than the way "Maxime Talbot, Superstar/4th Line Center/Part Time Winger For Sid" has been playing. But we're on the subject of the overall lack of intensity and focus and more importantly, the lack of secondary scoring that this team got from so many last year to support the top-line players.

So is there a player that ties all of these issues into one neat little package better than Talbot, our very own version of Willie Mays Hayes from Major League II?

Talbot scored 12 goals and 14 assists last year in 63 games (.413 points per game). That's decent secondary scoring given his role, and to boot, he was also a solid +8.

This year? Four goals, three assists in 31 games, down to just .226 points per game. He's been a plus just in just five of the 31 games in which he's played. He had a goal and an assist against Detroit on Nov. 11. Since then, he's played in 17 games, posting just two assists, no goals and a sparkling minus-12.

When you talk about players not playing their supporting roles, it's amazing to me that no one mentions this guy. And again, before you point at Talbot's role, half the fanbase was ready to drive Armstrong to the airport during his last season and a half here, and his numbers weren't even CLOSE to being that bad.

I guess it pays to ham it up every time you're around a camera.

I like Max a lot and there are bigger issues out there. One of them is strong play from supporting role players, and Talbot offers the most statistical proof of the Pens' problems in that regard.

RE: My rant on Talbot...

Apparently, someone called into the post-game show with Grover and Bourque last night and asked about Talbot's perceived decline in play this year.

Bourque strongly hinted that Talbot is playing hurt. I'm paraphrasing Bourque here but apparently, he said something to the effect that "a player (likely referring to Talbot) needs to decide that trying to tough it out through an injury does more harm to the team than good," and that may be a decision Max has to make in the short-term future.

stoosh, there are reasons why +/- lies. With the types of situations that a player like Satan is put in, the fact that he rates as a negative makes little sense. Truth: he is shit along the boards. He doesn't play well in his own zone regardless of who his linemates are, leading to a minus rating.

Isolating Talbot's numbers doesn't make any sense. The team overall is in trouble, and Max's numbers definitely reflect that. Plus, on some nights he's been playing like total shit. Numbers can't show how well a guy is playing, how well the men around him are playing, if he has chemistry with his linemates, whatever. Yeah, Talbot is not having a great season, but he's playing in every possible line combination, probably with an injury, and the team around him apparently doesn't give a damn. When he's on the ice, he generally looks like he gives a damn, so I'm not going to throw him under a bus. I'm not pleased with his play but I never get the feeling that he doesn't care. Numbers notwithstanding.

I guess the point is that I didn't need to read Satan's numbers to tell you that he plays like shit along the boards.
