We thought this game was gonna be like a classic episode of Home Improvement.
Instead, it turned into an episode of Family Feud when Al Borland hosted it.
What a mistake.

It's like every home game now is an AFC Championship Game at Three Rivers.
The only difference is that we don't even know where we're going with this.
Cowher was a joke.

The Pens beat the Bruins 2-1 in a shootout back in the 7th game of the season.
We had this to say:

"As far as the Bruins are concerned, they are solid.
They'll be in the playoffs.
If we go any more in-depth than that, we'll shoot ourselves."

It still rings true.

Is there trouble brewing in Pittsburgh? Yes.
If there wasn't trouble, we'd be worried.
You want your team to be pissed, and the Pens look beyond pissed at this point.

The thing about all of this is that you get more spin than you can even handle.

In the [PG] recently:

"But in this case, even players speaking strictly for background information, with no possibility of their identities being revealed, absolved Therrien of responsibility for the Penguins' struggles."

Even notorious Therrien critics like Mark Madden and Rob Rossi
haven't really approached the subject.

And let's face it.
This has nothing to do with Therrien or Mike Yeo or even Andre Savard.

This is a slump. The players either come out of it or they don't.
If you don't realize that, you shouldn't be allowed to watch TV.

This is an NHL season.
This is adversity at its absolute finest. No one is happy.

But this isn't our first rodeo.
The season starts now. Hold onto your balls.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

We didn't feel like crediting anthems.

[Picture+4.<span class=

The Bruins and the Pens come out flying. Good hockey. Tim Thomas shows why he ain't no joke.
The Bruins are relentless. But Fleury matches Thomas save for save.

Mark Eaton gets called for a penalty, but the Pens kill it off.

Chara tells Malkin to go tell it on the mountain with a big check.

After more MAF saves, the man with two first names, Dustin Jeffrey, gets a harmless shot on net. Tim Thomas has no idea what's going on.

Petr Gunn.

1-0

[Picture+8.<span class=

[Picture+5.<span class=

Everything was going fine until the Pens got called for a penalty.
Chara goes to the backdoor.
Top shelf.

1-1

The Pens get sent to sinbin city again.
Bad call, whatever.

Marc Savard makes them pay, short side high. 2-1

Things were calm until the Bruins turned it over.
Crosby plays shortshop, gets it to Dupes.
Dupuis Play™.

Weirdest picture of all time:

2-2

The good times were short lived.
Phil Kessel buries a Savard pass. 3-2
Pens still improved the play through the second.
As usual, they were in the game going into the third.

[Picture+6.<span class=

There are moments in a game and ina season that make a difference.
After killing another penalty, Dupes and Staal roll down on a 2-1.

Staal's redirection at a wide-open net almost hit somebody in F.
That was bad.
This entire game pretty much hinged on him burying that.

As we all dreamed, the Pens finally get a powerplay, but the Bruins get a shorthanded goal.

Vomit city.
4-2

Bruins added another goal just to make you sick. 5-2.

If there's a Baby Pen who has left his impression on the big club, it's Tim Wallace.
He had seen enough in the third period and goes head-to-shoulders with Lucic.
Lucic needs some Tums 'cause he ate Wallace's lunch for him.

What a pic.

Game.

MISCELLANEOUS
  • Surprised Big Ben wasn't at the Arena.
  • Therrien's post-game presser = Intense.
  • Pens held a closed-door players meeting after the game.
  • Tim Thomas is like a chastity belt.

Let 2008 burn.

the therrien pic summarizes everything.

here's the article on the players only meeting:
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08366/938786-61.stm

of particular note was this quote by free candy:
"I think team attitude is the biggest thing," defenseman Brooks Orpik said. "I don't know if it's poor. I think maybe it's just the approach or lack of preparation going into it.

"These are definitely the times that test the character. It's easy to be a good teammate when things are going well. I think when things are going rough like they are now, that's when you see each other's true colors.

"You would hope that everyone in the room kind of stays the path and works for a resolution here, but that's easier said than done sometimes."

Wallace is a beast. I must say that it was nice to see some firm emotion during that fight.
Maybe that'll help the Pens.
I just feel that one small little event during a game in the near future is going to catapult the Pens into an insane winning streak. It's a feeling. (No joke, my random "feelings" come true about 75% of the time...) But anyway, I'm no psychic or anything but, I still feel like something very good is going to happen very soon.
Perhaps only wishful thinking and a lack of sleep.

Staal played so well even though he didn't score.

I swear to god the next person that compares last season to this season should just move to Tampa and become their biggest fan. That's what you deserve.

I don't remember the penguins playing this poorly last year regardless of points.

So many people post here have no clue.

I'm not jumping off a bridge, I actually understand the game of hockey. It can be turned around. I also understand that this team is playing like trash and are so far below potential it's a little sickening. I love this sport and this team and it sucks to see them play bad. There's no point in sugar coating it or making comparisons to anything. Something has to happen and I hope it's sooner rather than later.

I never thought I would say Crosby and lazy in the same sentence.

I just fought Geico spokesman even though he out weighed me by 20 some lbs and was 3 inches taller.
Seriously though I hope the room took notice to his actions he has played out of his mind in his call ups.
I would rather have a team full of guys like wallace and jeffrey who we built the system around than a guys just trying to collect a cup or pump up their paycheck for next year by padding their stats at malkins and crosbys expense.

Natalie said...

Here's my biggest issue with comparing last season to this season.

They were in the same place last year, before the big run they went on. They were in the same place two seasons ago, before a big run that catapulted them into the playoff race.

I'm sick of the same crap every year, waiting for a miracle run to right the ship. Eventually you've gotta stop comparing with previous years and realize it isn't 06-07, and it isn't 07-08, and the Pens just went what, 5-9 in December and that's UNACCEPTABLE for a team that's supposedly a Cup contender, not when you have teams with less talent and/or less experience that are tearing up both conferences.

Because if you take away the huge runs from last year and the year before, the post-season is a very different picture, and if the Pens are figuring they'll come out of the gate in January on a 9-0-2 run or some crap, then they'd better wake up real quick, because the East isn't the cakewalk they seem to think it is, especially when you can't even muster a goal against the worst team in the league.

J.S. said...

The Wallace pic looks like he belongs in some sort of Dragonball Z cartoon.

Ben might have been at the game, but any attempt to get him on film was probably intercepted.

Hopefully the Pens can solve the joke that is Tim Thomas. It looks like they had a good idea with bad angle shots and going after rebounds, but that's not exactly a good game plan.

The only person that would clean up this mess? Billy Mays.

Natalie said...

Also that Dawson thing will never, ever get old. Worst sobbing face in the history of television.

powerhouse said...

The reason for this loss is pretty simple, poor special teams play. PK was terrrible. In addition PP gave up shortie AGAIN!!!!! End of story.

Tom said...

I think its time for Mike Yeo to take the kneepads off, remove Therrien's nuts from his mouth, and devise a powerplay that actually moves the puck and creates space.

Stilly said...

Lots of throwing the Pens under the jobber bus and very little credit to Boston.

They're better than everyone in the East right now. Hell maybe even the west.

I listened to the radio broadcast, and Mike Lange likened the Bruins to the Wings on a number of occasions. Sounds to me like the Pens were flat out beaten by a better team. Does that mean they played badly? Not at all. Maybe it looked that way on TV though.

Im getting sick of people saying that the reason this team sucks right now is because we lost a lot of our guys like Malone, Ruutu, etc. I think that's a bullshit excuse. We've got more talent on this team than any team out there, but they're just not performing. Call it lack of motivation or whatever you want to call it, but there's no excuse for it.

Orpik said it all when he said that you can tell how solid a teammate is when the team is not doing so well. This tells me that we have a bunch of men running around acting like little bitches and being out for themselves instead of out for the team.

These boys need to get their shit together, trust each other, and quit thinking that they can dig themselves out of a ditch this year like they did last year. New year, new circumstances....they just need to cut the shit and play the kind of hockey that we all know they can play.

The Pens need "something". Does anyone know what that something is at the moment? No.
They don't even know what they need. The something that the Pens need is something that no one will understand until they start playing better. Perhaps it's more excitement on the ice. Perhaps it's some line changes. Perhaps it's a good long talk with MT. Perhaps it's even as simple as Wallace's fight last night. No one knows.
Until this "something" occurs, I'm just gonna sit back, watch my team, and see what happens.

Raybin said...

*snap*

That sound was the last of my patience breaking entirely after last night's game.

Honest to God, this team needs a fucking enema. Hire a naughty nurse and tell the players to fucking bend over.

First, the power play. Jesus crack-addicted Christ. I've heard it said that the definitely of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. I don't know if that's true, but I do know it fits in this case.

The powerplay is ranked, what, 15th? That's good, but with the talent here, it should be well into the top 10. What bothers me, though, is the manner in which it's run.

I'm no expert, but it's pretty plain to me that teams are using two or three penalty killers to clog up the middle and break up the passes the Pens power play lives or dies by. The other one or two guys lurk near the points not only to break passes, but also to see if they can get an odd man rush going. The fact that the Pens are as high as 15th is a testament to the skill of the players. If this continues, a team with the penalty kill like the Flyers will eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner all year long. There's no adaptation, no change in strategy.

I know HCMT is a great coach. I know Andre Savard is a great coach. I'm less convinced about Mike Yeo. I'm not saying fire him, but I am saying someone needs to take a good hard second look at him.

Moving on, I come to MAF. If he's not yet a Top 5 elite goaltender (and I honestly think he is), he's at any rate easily in the top 10. But I think he's starting to show symptoms of relapse into 06-07 and early 07-08 Fleury mode. That is, he's relying almost exclusively on his remarkable athletic ability and his lightning quick reflexes to stop pucks at the expense of sound goaltending fundamentals. Not only that, but he's also started spitting out rebounds like he used to. Meloche and HCMT need to come down hard on this before it gets worse.

Sidney Crosby. I'm about to become the kind of person I absolutely hate, but I have to: Sid...SHOOT. THE. FUCKING. PUCK.

I really don't do much else but watch Center Ice these days, but my lack of an actual social existence has given me some insight by being able to watch other teams. Specifically, I heard the Avs broadcasters talk about a team meeting wherein they decided they were getting too fancy and just decided to start going bombs away and letting pucks go at the net and every opportunity.

And guess what? They've started scoring.

Sid is the best setup man in the league, but at some point he has to realize that the passing lanes just aren't there at the time and it's best to get the puck on net and make the goalie make a save and hope for the rebound. All the talent in the world can't force a puck consistently through five sets of legs and sticks.

Miro Satan. I was a relentless defender of his early in the season. I'd predicted he'd score 35 goals this year, but I kept arguing in his favor when he was on a 27-30 goal pace earlier. (Which, let's face it, is more than sufficient). But no more. His lack of effort is appalling.

If things don't turn around and SOON--I'm talking the Florida game on the 3rd here--then HCMT, Buries It and King Shero have got to get together and shake some fucking shit up.

If it's true that some players are out to pad stats and aren't looking to help the team win, then these guys need to be a healthy scratch for a game or two or three until they get the message. Dupuis and Fedotenko have been playing extremely well since HCMT did exactly that to them.

I do know this: Things are on a fast downward trajectory and something has got to change to wake the team out of its stupor, especially if this players only meeting doesn't cure things. Whether that means firing Yeo or a blockbuster trade or whatever, a strong, unambiguous message must be sent.

A bigtime shakeup/trade might be in order regardless. I mean, it's not like the Pens don't have a plethora of trade bait to the right team. Off the top of my head from both the big and little teams:

Boucher
Eaton
Sabourin
Satan
Fedotenko
Stone
Pesonen
Smith
Taffe
And of course, draft picks

It's not like a lot of those guys aren't playing well, but none of them are integral, "can't-be-spared" cogs to the machine. Who cares about future injuries? Make Curry the permanent backup. Call up Lovejoy. Call up Minard. Call up Bissonette. Wallace and Jeffrey have both been playing GREAT. Those guys can easily replace any of the ones in that list above. What none of them can do is be the Marian Hossa/Ilya Kovalchuk caliber scoring winger it's becoming more and more apparent that this team desperately needs. Plus, such an unexpected and bigtime move might shake the club out of its torpor. I think the guys haven't gotten too comfortable. Clear the cap room somehow, bribe the NHL, but DO IT.

Finally, a word on Staal: I think people talking of trading him are banana bread nuts. He's already a sure-fire future multiple-time Selke winner and a great third-line, penalty killing, second power play unit center. What's not to like? He's, what, 19? Lock him up.

I hope no one thinks I'm whining or crying havoc or taking to the bridge. And if I am, I don't mean to be. But goddammit, this is how I see it and I'm calling a spade a spade. The Pens will make the playoffs, but if a change doesn't come they won't go any deeper than the first round.

We got enough points in '08 to let us make a good run in '09 and make the playoffs running. Let's hit the reset and move forward.

Boston is the first game of the season now.

Go Pens.

I think it's an obvious heart problem....as in there doesn't seem to be much of it....there's no fight in the dog....

I don't think Fedo=Malone. OK, he has more goals or whatever, but Malone seemed to get more involved. Especially in games where they're being pushed around. Someone needs to get in the face of the other team....last year, Malone did that....Roberts did that...Ruutu did that....
.

Move Staal...I'm not a hater, I think he's going to be a top or second line center....problem is we already have that for the next 5+ years. Move him now when you can get alot for him, and get a winger for Sid. Satan isn't the answer.

Johnny Wrath said...

Right. This is where Therrien either gets himself fired or tells the team a few things about how to win hockey games.

Win a goddamn face-off killing a penalty. Staalsy went 7/15 for a 32%. To win a Selke, you have to win a face-off.

They aren't letting Gino in the circle. He took a total of 4 draws, going 50%. Sid went 47% and the Penguins lost 58% of face-offs. That is disgusting.

If I'm coaching Pittsburgh, I'm getting some construction paper and fashioning a big cone hat. I'm calling it the "failed drop one-touch around the world play" cap. The cap isn't for wearing so much as it is for vomiting into. Seriously.

If I'm managing Pittsburgh, I send Satan to the WB/Scranton Penguins. I've always hated the term "soft Euro", but Satan is principle soft Euro material.

If we pull out the stops again and deal for "first line winger X", its going to cost us defensive depth this time around. Goligoski or Letang, one of those two. Personally, I'd like Letang to stay. I think he's more versatile, has that coveted right-handed shot, and is noticeably more physical in the d zone. That said, that could make him the more valuable trade commodity.

Don Cherry suggested that Sid stop doing every intermission interview, every conference, and every autograph session. I agree. I understand the NHL needs Sid to be accessible and do a lot of PR. Apparently, the insistence on focusing on hockey helped a former all-time great when he was sneaking off to the showers to sign sticks for the other team.

Don also suggests that we "aren't the same team without Malone and Roberts". I disagree, if only for the fact that they both are really doing their part losing all those games in Tampa after similar contract holdouts last year. That's weak for "team glue" kind of guys. Also, Fedotenko is way better than Ryan Malone in all but one respect: fights. Feds doesn't drop them, but honestly, who wants Malone to drop them if he's going to lose to Sean Avery?

Finally, I demand that everyone make safe decisions tonight. Go Pens.

People are complaining about the loss of Ruutu? Really? Waaaaaaah, go curl up in a ball and watch the 2007-08 season in review DVDs if you miss him that much. Jarkko Ruutu is not walking through those doors anytime soon, or at least he isn't while wearing the black and gold/khaki.

Cookie has more than filled his role. In fact, I'll say he's filled that role better than Ru ever did. Sure, Ruutu might have been a pest that knew how to stir things up, but Cooke (a)hits better, (b) stays out of the box more and doesn't take a third of the boneheaded penalties that Jarko did, and (c) shows up on the score sheet more than Ruutu ever did.

First of all, if you don't get the "Pens aren't making the playoffs" joke by now, you should go die in a fire.

Secondly, is Sid like programmed not to shoot or something? Agreeing with Stoosh's post in the last thread, the SH goal came from Sid trying to make a pass instead of putting it on the fucking net.

Thirdly, if any Bruins fan tries to give me shit tomorrow at the game, I will murder them. Fucking bean-eaters.

Fourthly, the Pens' playoff run notwithstanding, 2008 fucking sucked, in every possible aspect. Bring on the New Year.

Even though Lucic beat Wallace, i thought it was a solid showing against a manbeast. plus it showed he's got some balls and maybe wanted to fire the team up for thursday.

@ Akus: "Does the Dupuis Play™, mean an "A" patch?" yes absolutely. atleast he's been fairl consistent.

Again, hate being the armchair coach, but would it hurt to change up the powerplay formation, at all? Maybe Whit and Gogo on the points, Gino instead of Sid on the half-boards ('cause he actually has a shot). Sid behind the net and working the left side, and either Sykie floating around/someone in front of the net. Could they really do any worse?

The Boston PP was a thing of beauty. For one they actually had a set break-out, which is why they were able to consistently gain the zone (Pens don't, which is why they have trouble establishing possession sometimes). Then, they have a ton of player movement and rotation, which creates more openings. Pens have been running the same set-up for I don't know how long. Every team knows what they're gonna do. The Sid to Whintney interception that iced the game epitomizes this.

And J.S.,

Fuck me. I had a Raybin type post all worked up and my computer effed up. Oh well.

I don't know how people could possibly believe that the pair of Fedo and Cooke aren't better than Malone and Ruutu. The Pens are way better off in that department.

The Pens need to get better in the Defensive zone. Especially on the PK. There is so much puck chasing that it looks like an NHL '09 game. Gonchar would help this, but he's only one man. The blueliners need to step up, and the forwards need to backcheck. A couple of forwards backchecking isn't going to cut it. The whole team needs to buy into it.

There is a lot of improving to do at both ends of the ice. I don't know what it will take to get that done, but it needs to get done.

Wallace is solid. I wouldn't mind him staying up here for a while. He lets the other guys know that he's willing to do anything to stay up here...don't take that shit for granted, NHL Pens.

Orpik is a fountain of knowledge. Love him. He calls EVERYONE out, including himself. He should be a permanent A--what a leader.

Not freaking out, but I'm hoping for a win to open the new year.

Go Pens.

For the record, the pens are missing guys like Roberts and Malone because they actually went in front and crashed the net. They don't have that presence in front and they desperately need it. Outside of the Motown game, Stall has sucked the big one, and the 2-on-1 shorthanded proves that. I was pissed the day they drafted him and I will be pissed until he leaves town. Completely overrated. For the record, Kessel had 8 shots last night. You can't tell me he wouldn't look great with Malkin or Crosby. We could have had Backstrom, Kessel, or Toews, none of whom have played 200 games but all of them averaging more per game than Staal. What a waste of a pick.

The Pens just play too much of an outside game and no one mixes it up in the slot. You have to have that presence in the house if you want to succeed. It was obvious how a guy like Holmstrom helped Detroit and Boston has modeled themselves after them. Guys like Lucic, Wheeler, and Ryder all go in front and wreak havoc. There is a reason they are the top 2 teams in scoring in the league. I love the effort Dupuis and Fedetenko put in, but they don't have the net presence that the pens need.

And for the love of christ put Malkin on the wall again. He had 17 power play goals last year and right now he has 4. Something has to give.

I agree with BHM on the crash the net point. Fedotenko is supposed to be a big body but he plays a small game. No presence in front. Don't see him as an upgrade to Malone at all (but I also don't think Malone was worth what he signed for). Not to mention that you'd still potentially have one line with great chemistry (Malone - Malkin - Sykora)

I don't think Staal has been that bad...he just doesn't fit in where they want him too. The team said they expected Staal to pick up Malone's minutes. That would mean playing on the top 2 lines. That experiment failed....

Stoosh said...

Raybin's epic post is money, as is Annie's soon after.

I'm going to echo the sentiments so wonderfully expressed by my buddy Jesse over at LGP...I think too many fans have set expectations at the "instant gratification" level, with no regards to the fact that this is an 82-game season with plenty of ups and downs.

Boston, Detroit and San Jose will go through theirs as well. Look at how shitty Philly was at the beginning of the year, and they seem to be hitting a downward spiral again. Every team goes through it.

There's nothing wrong with being critical because most of the players in that locker room will probably tell you their play is deserving of criticism.

There's also nothing wrong with hoping for a win every night. Unfortunately too much of the fanbase seems to be blurring the line between hoping for a win every night and expecting a videogame-style blowout. It's no longer enough for some fans to enjoy watching guys like Crosby, Malkin and Fleury; if Sid and Geno don't score three points a night, it's not enough. If Fleury gives up more than two goals, half the fanbase wants him traded.

People need to remember that despite everything this team accomplished last season, this core of Crosby-Malkin-Fleury-Staal-Letang-Whitney is, for the most part, wayyyyyy ahead of its curve.

Wayne Gretzky won his first Cup in 1983-84 at the age of 23. It was his fifth full season in the league and his fourth full season playing with the bulk of that Edmonton core - Messier, Coffey, Kurri and Glenn Anderson. And that's considered perhaps the most high-powered team in the modern era. If that's the standard some are expecting them to live up to, it's like being disappointed that Fleury hasn't turned into Patrick Roy yet.

Mario was 25 when he won his first Cup. Yzerman had just turned 31 when he won his first Cup.

Maybe they need to rebalance things a little; maybe the need to get someone who can play Kevin Stevens to Sid and Geno's Mario and Jagr. Maybe not. Let Shero sort it out. Have faith. Be patient.

Enjoy these players because like Jesse said in his post at LGP, one day twenty or so years down the road, we're going to be sitting in Consol Energy Arena as they send Sid and Geno's numbers to the rafters. And we're all going to be wondering why we didn't sit back and enjoy it more when we had the chance.

Have a fun New Year's tonight, folks, and please be careful.

Stoosh said...

@ Adrienne -

Where did you hear about Orpik going off on Crosby?

Just curious because over at LGP, a bunch of posters have taken the fact that the cameras supposedly caught Sid and Orpik getting a little animated on the bench with each other a few games ago (Toronto game, maybe?) and have turned it into this full-blown speculation that Sid and Orpik aren't getting along.

I'm betting Sykora gets an an "A" tomorrow. Take that to the bank.

Flyer Hater said...

What's most amazing about this is that the Pens are still pretty comfortably in a playoff position.

Dr. Turkleton said...

If a trade is in order to shake things up...is the way the Pens are playing really helping King Shero work a deal?...if you were an opposing GM, would you part with someone to kick-start the Pens...If I was that other GM, I'd be asking King Shero for the world, in a sense, overpaying with prospects and draft picks [which I don't truly feel KS wants to do since the cupboard is kinda bare from the Poppa Pump Deal™]

another reason why it might be hard right now to find a dance partner for a decent trade is that too many teams are currently still in 'contention'...thus, limiting the amount of GM's willing to swing a deal by trading value for quantity/prospects/picks...

the only type of transaction that I could see currently taking place would be one similar to the Sydor for Boucher swap where it was more or less a Change of Location move for both parties involved...

the next few weeks before the ASG break should be interesting to see if this stretch makes them contenders or pretenders:

• 11 games
• 6 home / 5 away
• 3 v. ATL Div. [@nyr, @phi, NYR]
• 4 v. non-playoff teams

I know some of you like their announcers but that one dude knows nothing about hockey. I lost respect for him when last year he called Gonchar "dirty" after that hit he had against the boards last year. That, and the self-righteousness of all Boston sports fans makes me vomit. I've been taking shit for the last few days after that loss.

Can we kick some ass this time, boys? Please? I mean, seriously, how can you lose sight of the fucking jolly green giant? I do love Wallace for going to town on that fucking hunchback troll though. He held his own, you gotta give him that. As stated, Dupuis has been balls out and deserves the "A". Not saying it's true or not, but it still strikes me as interesting. Anyone else wondering what's up with all of the Sid gossip lately? I don't remember this much of this type running around before at once (but that could be because of alcohol-enhanced faulty memory, I'll admit).

Kierstan, My best guess, and yes, it is just a guess, is that most of the stuff we are hearing about sid is nothing more than BS gossip. People are looking to place blame, and Sid has become the easy target since he isn't doing as well as years past. But since they can't blame things like his work ethic or on ice demeanor, since those are well documented to be some of the best in the league, they have to look outside the realms of hockey and find dumb shit to talk about.
If the Pens were winning game after game right now no one would have a friend who's cousin talked to a guy who saw Sid at a bar night after night. And no one would be misinterpreting a discussion of two guys who get alone pretty well as a heated argument between two guys who hate each other.
People just need to chill, have another drink drunkblog, it will make things more fun.
