GAMEDAY [35] -- NEW JERSEY DEVILS

[Picture+17.png]

Oh, it's the Devils again.
Yawn.

Can't wait to see Gionta and Parise complain for the two and a half hours.
Over/Under on Bobby Holik cheap shots is 13.
Asshole.

:: Pens called up Biz Nasty and some dude with two first names, Dustin Jeffrey.
If he breathes, he'll be an instant upgrade over Ryan Stone.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Harsh words for Matt Cooke in Lightningville.

Some guy thinks Matt Cooke should have followed the code, and fought Vinny Lecavalier.

Anyway, I thought Matt Cooke showed a lot of disrespect for Vinny Lecavalier by not fighting him during Tuesday's game at Pittsburgh. By now, you know the back story, but for those late to the party: Cook, as a member of the Capitals last season, threw the check that separated Vinny's right shoulder that required arthroscopic surgery. Lecavalier did not have the puck at he time and Cooke was fined $2,500 by the league.
[Whatev]

Really don't agree with all that.
Just because Lecavalier can't move forward, why should Cooke even care?

Lightning Strikes is a solid blog, so we can't really say much.

But as for this tool box at [Crashing The Net]:

I’ve never liked Matt Cooke and I know personally that a number of his Canucks’ teammates didn’t either. One of them, a friend of mine, wanted to beat him up.

He has been the ultimate hit and run agitator. Say what you will about Jarks and Avery, they will at least drop the gloves after they have crossed the line.

Not Cooke. He’s a coward.

Is there a less impressive way to start a post then acting like you're tight with a professional athlete and then threatening to beat a professional athlete up?

Get real.

Tell Lecavalier to worry about scoring, and then tell all your Canuck boys to blow us.

Moron.

Wait...are we talking about the same Avery who backs out of fights with guys that are either the same size or bigger? Get real.

Cooke is NOT a coward. This person needs to get their balls in check.

Splinter is pretty money. He always knows what to do.

Go Pens.

Tee said...

Theres a measure of truth to what they say about Cooke. The code dates back to the very origins of hockey and as they say about Ruutu and Avery, at least they'll drop and go when they know they have to answer the bell. Cooke turtles more than anyone else in the league. For me, that's not the way the game is meant to be played. Just like Orpik stepped up and went with Cole last year. It effectively defuses the situations before they can get to the point of being dangerous. I like Cooke's hustle and intensity but if you're going to be willing to throw the body around you have to be willing to drop the gloves and answer for it too, otherwise you end up being stretchered out of MSG like Ulf Samuellson. I'm not condoning cheap shots or sucker punches by any means, but that's what happens when you let it fester for that long and never answer for what you've done. There's plenty of career AHL'ers like Kip Brennan who would probably jump at the chance to come up for a game and sucker punch Cooke in the mouth.

PS. Tomorrow's high temperature is supposed to be a whopping 66.

Coincidence?

Pens have to win tonight...not just for the 2 points...but because I got a new jersey for christmas and if they lose it must be unlucky.

Please, Please, Please win.

A splinter quote edited for tonight

"I am proud of you, Geno and Crosby. Tonight you have learned the final and greatest truth of buries it: that ultimate mastering comes not from the body, but from the mind. Together, there is nothing your two minds cannot accomplish. Help each other, draw upon one another, and always remember the power that binds you. The same is what brought me here tonight, that which I gladly return with my final words: I love you all, my sons."

By using Splinter, the Pens will probably get their asses kicked all over for the first period, fight and argue with each other through the second and then, finally, pull it out in the third and get the victory.

I'm going to miss most of the game because I'm getting dragged to watch the Kings play Toronto. Sadly, It's the basketball version...

kstewy16 said...

And THAT is why the Lightning and their fans are a bunch of losers.

Not to mention, lets look at this. Forechecker at KK does a penalty +/- that shows how many penalties you take compared to draw. If an "agitator" is doing their job, than they should be a +, but if all they do is take dumbass penalties and hurt their team more than help, than they are a -.

So then.
Cookie is a +2.
Ruutu is a -4.
Avery was a +4.
Begin is a -4.
Lucic -2.
Tucker is a +2.

So on so on. Anyway, the point is, Cooke is one of the best Agitators, plus everyone on his team likes him, plus he's half decent, plus he isn't Sean Avery.

Anyone who thinks fighting Vinny was a better idea then getting a PP for your team is an idiot and should go watch the XFL.

@Pops, I think the absence of 2 of our puck moving d-men make us hate the defense only guys. Before it was OK that Scuds and Eaton couldn't skate the puck to the blue line if their lives depended on it, but without Whitney/letang/gonchar there to balance it out, we see how pathetic it is.

But I can live with Scuds not being able to skate. He embarrasses 1st lines. Eaton on the other hand.... Well lets just hope Letang gets back soon.

Stoosh said...

@ Kstewey -

I know what you're saying. Chances are good that they should make the playoffs and then all bets are off. Here's what I think...

Boston is for real. They roll three good lines that are all scoring. Thomas has played well now for almost a full season and a half.

Philly is close, but their goaltending is just awful (only four teams have given up more than Philly's 104 goals allowed). They don't seem as physical and I think their defense is a weakness.

I'd hate to run into Washington in the playoffs if they fix their goaltending situation.

The Rangers have scored 100 goals, allowed 99 and yet they're a combined seven games over .500. Their defense is softer than last year and I'm not sure their offense is better suited for the playoffs than they were last year.

GOALLLLLLLLL! Off the schneid!

Montreal doesn't scare me.

The Devils can't keep playing this way all year, can they? I don't think so.

Buffalo? Meh.

Okay, I think you're right. Hopefully King Shero is paying attention as well...I'm sure he is.

Ok I know this is stupid to talk about now but I can't hold it in anymore. The Pens have way too many NHL caliber defensemen. You're going to see one of our D (Legame) and a forward (Staal (Maybe =( )) for a winger in a big trade.

honestly, you just cant afford to have that much money locked up in a centerman who is third on your depth chart. so as much as i like staal, if he gets anything it will be very short term, possibly to have him develop a little more and get a bigger return. whatever. shero's in control

OrpikSmash said...

yeah after the whole hossa thing, i'll stick with shero's offseason signings and the young newcomers, the problem with the defensemen is that there is no way we're gonna be able to sign both letang and gogo to long term deals with whitney, orpik, fleury, crosby, and malkin's respective contracts. sooner or later, one of those core d men is gonna have to be traded. right now i really don't care cuz thats a year or two down the road still

The problem is they are doing the umbrella, but everyone is a lefty, and no one wants to shoot.

Since everyone is a lefty, they can only do one timers while passing from left to right, and since they have 4 high and 1 low, too much passing means they never have a guy in the shooting lane.

They just need to go back to 2 high, 2 low, and Sid doing whatever the hell he wants.

Thoughts, dudes...

1. How can anyone possibly argue after tonight's game that Fleury is not an elite goaltender? If you can watch a game like this tonight, then add that to everything he's done since coming back from his injury last season and tell me he's not one of the three best goalies in the league, I don't know what else you expect from your goaltender.

2. It wasn't pretty but at this point, I'm not going to bitch about getting two points via a 1-0 game.

3. You have to expect these kinds of games when they play the Devils. If they used to collapse their defensemen around the crease when Uncle Daddy was in net, they'll do it even more with Clemmensen. Against teams like this, you're just not going to consistently generate a ton of chances.

4. Sidney Crosby has three shots on goal in his last five games. Tonight was the third time in five games that he was held without a shot on net. That absolutely needs to change.

5. If Don Waddell deals Kovalchuk for Gaborik, the NHL needs to step in and ask Atlanta ownership to remove Waddell from his position.

Schide said...

@Doppler

Oh, yeah, I probably should have put an @pops at the beginning of my comment because that's what I was replying to.

That is-
"pops - also i think this is the first time this season the pens have won the first of back-to-backs"

But they just won the Buffalo game, and now that I look at the schedule, the first game of the year they won and that was the first of a back-to-back.

Stoosh said...

It's almost pointless to discuss the team's ultimate abilities to keep Letang, Goligoski, Whitney and Orpik at this stage because there's too much that can happen in the markets before their contracts significantly impact the cap.

Gonchar and Eaton will be both be off the books after next year. If Gonch comes back on a new deal, it'll be at a significantly reduced rate since he'll be 36 when the 2009-10 season ends.

Both Letang and Goligoski are restricted free agents making less than $1M per year. Goligoski needs to be extended after this year; Letang after next year.
Neither of those two have played long enough or contributed enough at this level to cause any real worries with potential raises.

Given their relative inexperience and lack of production, both of them would likely be extended for something around $2.00 million per year. $2M per year would be more than doubling their respective existing contracts.

Unless they're clearly the most prominent building blocks on their respective teams (like Erik Johnson in St. Louis), defensemen at those ages aren't going to cash in with cap-killing deals until they reach unrestricted free agency.

Fleury had sex with all of your mothers.

Whistler said...

I was at the game, and the video replay showed the puck going over the line. When the refs upheld the call the place went bonkers.

So, for those of you watching or listening, what was the reason the no-goal call was upheld?

LargeTurkey said...

The team played pretty badly tonight. Just b/c Fleury is out of his mind doesn't change that we are struggling

Erik J. Barzeski said...

Whistler, the puck didn't cross the goal line. Not entirely. 7/8ths may have, but that last bit was still clearly on the goal line prior to being kicked out of the goal mouth and crease by Eaton's skate.

And Eaton deserves a lot of credit for that save - he was looking at the puck and it wasn't luck as Errey speculated it may have been.

dying alive said...

@ Whistler - I think it was one of those things where there wasn't enough conclusive evidence to overturn the call on the ice. I mean, logic would say that it crossed the line, but at least on TV, they didn't have a camera angle that showed it going all the way across (though it was reeeeeally close). I assume Toronto saw the same angles we did on TV.

debrisslide said...

largeturkey, it may not have been a jaw-dropping performance, but it was by no means bad. I didn't notice the Pens totally falling asleep for ten straight minutes. They played a physical game and worked for the chances they got. . .at least, during even strength hockey. The PP was fucking embarrassing, but that's the only complaint I have about their performance tonight. Fleury played well and the game would not have been won without him, surely, but you have to appreciate that they didn't look fucking stoned out there on the ice like they did against Tampa.

Yeah, it was realllly close, but really close doesn't give you a goal. The overhead was a great view.

Nice win aside.... is too much to ask for maybe a few breakout plays for the PP, to get the puck in the zone? It can't be that hard, other teams do it. Most of the times it's just a player randomly skating it up, nothing set. They struggled bigtime getting the puck into the zone tonight.

The Pens downturn started when Gil went down.

Better game defensively.

We need to crash the net and get physical. Start a fight in the crease. Piss off a goalie. Did I mention crash the net and get physical? Might want to use speed with quick transition game since that is our strength. Sid looks tense.

"So, for those of you watching or listening, what was the reason the no-goal call was upheld?"

Obviously it's the world-wide conspiracy to give Cindy and his fairy teammates every advantage possible.

@ Stoosh:

About your first thought: I am totally gay for Fleury(though maybe not as bad as FH is). That said, I thought that his performance was unreal, otherwordly perhaps, except for his rebounds. I know that he got significantly better, last year's return from injury and playoffs are a perfect example. But he seems to be giving up the big ones again. Not always, but more than i'd like to see. I think this is more crucial now that you don't have the USS Hal Gill in front of the net, wrecking opponent's lives. I'm not worried about MAF and i still think he's going to be a superstar elite goalie. His lateral movement and angles after doing so are still second to none around these parts.

One other thought: Mark Eaton is still not back to his pre-knee injury unbelievable status, but my goodness, he's completely turned his game around and i think he'll be ok, which is obviously a good sign for the Pens.

No one is gayer for Fleury than I am.

Fleury does occasionally give up that juicy rebound, but he's so quick and anticipates so well, that more often than not he gets back in position to make the second save.

Steve, no need to set it on fire.

Taking a crap on its doorstep is more than suffice.

MAF=Solid Beast
So many amazing saves...still in shock over the one that hit his wrist as he dove from China to the other end of the net.
Eaton=Not my fav player but still, that foot save was sick!
Tenk=Nice shot...nice hair

KICK SAVE!

AND A BEAUTY!

Solid game tonight, Pens played much better defensively and MAF was MAF.

Staff, I think you need to break the streak of going back-to-back with game days. Tin Man was huge but couldn't bring it two in a row. I don't think we should risk it with Master Splinter.

@ Goon,

I completely agree, I'm confident against the Habs tomorrow. However, there's no need to give Master Splinter that first L, especially with the Av's on the not to distant horizon.

I think Creed needs to called upon for this next game. He is clutch...
