A Plague On Both Our Houses

Montreal sucks.

Montreal fans continue to show the rest of North America how XM NHL® All-Star Fan Balloting presented by 2K Sports is done by voting in droves for all six Canadiens on the ballot.

In other news, Patrick Roy's banner has asked to be traded.

:: Should there be more retired numbers for the Pens? PENGUINS EXPERIENCE

We'll probably hear about this during the game tonight.
Instead of watching the Lions on Thanksgiving, turn to FSN.

Winter Classic: 11:00 a.m.
Game 5 -- Sykora Goal: 2:00 p.m.

Winter Classic: 5:30 p.m.
Game 5: 8:30 p.m.

Was the Winter Classic that riveting of a game?
If you can't see the aura surrounding the game, you're an idiot.
But we're gonna sit and watch a whole game of what we know is nothingness?
Yeah, we will, actually.

A look at the Pens stats through 20 games.

Colby Armstrong destroyed Jason Blake last night.

First one to send us the clip, gets nothing

We've made some roster changes on Gamedays.
Howard the Duck has been released.

So, in keeping with recent Pittsburgh tradition, we signed an Indian. WHYGAVS

We also are announcing the starter for tonights game.
Sgt. Doakes from Dexter.
If you don't watch Dexter, you don't know whats going on.
What a character.

Speaking of the game tonight. We meant to post this last month.

This ain't video blog city.
But holy shit.

Jimmy Kimmel jobs Matt Damon on his show all the time, inviting him on but then saying the show ran out of time and can't bring him on. He's done it numerous times. Sarah Silverman, who used to date Jimmy Kimmel, made a music video called "I'm F*&$ing Matt Damon."

Jimmy Kimmel comes back with this.
The craziest thing is how Kimmel and Affleck got all these people to make cameos.

I think they should retire Jagr Francis and Barrasso. However that might piss off some of the other guys who won the cups with us.

OR, they could UNretire Briere, and just leave ol' 66 hanging in the rafters forever, all by his lonesome. He's our god.

You know I heard someone ask once if the Briere was for Danielle Briere....

And doesn't Hillary Duff know that to really be famous she has to date a REAL hockey player? I'm talking one that 12 year old girls all across America have actually heard of.

and can someone tell me what the capcha says? i can read jobbing, but not the other one and i can't get the picture bigger. but anyway, some of those words are a bit odd.

finally, the indian in the cupboard, awesomely weird.

Nulpher said...

I'd say keep it at only two numbers on the retired list. They're up there because they have shown that they're justified to be up there.

Briere because of his untimely death right before he would have started to dominate. He was projected to be a beast. Nobody wore the number anyways before its retirement out of respect.

Lemieux's number is retired since he is by far, the single most important person in Penguins history. Imagine if Buries it hadn't come to Pittsburgh... we wouldn't have a franchise right now. Lemieux is the heart and soul of the Penguins, and without him, the franchise would have died long ago.

Although the other players mentioned contributed in huge ways to the Penguins during their tenures, nobody has come close to Lemieux.

Bobby Brown said...

kstewy is officially a worse Penguins fan than every puckbunny and bandwagon fan combined by suggesting we unretire Briere. You are a complete toolbag. Mutilate yourself with a rusty paperclip.

wilsmith said...

Francis and Jagr deserve it.

FireFox said...

I'm on the fence about retiring more numbers for the Pens. I think one of the good things about the Pens is that they don't retire just anyone's number. Yes, players that were retired for many other teams like the Habs were great players, but I think it should take a lot more than that to retire. It gets to the point that you have so many numbers retired you don't want to retire anymore. So that jobber from 1955 that got his number retired screwed the Hall-of-Famer that will retire in 2025. Whatever, the Pens are taking the right approach.

The Ben Afflack video is funny as hell. Silverman had no prayer of ever coming back with something better than that with all the star power in it. A solid Huey Lewis plug as well. In fact, I think Huey Lewis should be added to the gameday roster.

jefe p said...

if anyone i would say jagr can be retired. no one wants to wear 68 anyway. everyone else can just stick to the ring of honor or whatever.

@BnG -agreed.

kstewy16 said...

UNretiring Briere was a joke lol, But Lemieux is still my god...

Bobby Brown is acting like he just lost a baggy of crack.
Since when do people take things seriously on the pens blog?

Mike said...

a solid free agent pick-up would be Bruce Lee, if you question how bad-ass he is watch this video

Steve In Denver said...

Wow, don't mess with Jimmy Kimmel, ever.

Retired #'s?
I think Randy Carlyle's #25 could be argued to be retired ...a little bit of a stretch, but he was the Pens captain forever, won the Norris Trophy, all star, just never won a cup.

I don't think you can retire Ron Francis' 10. He started his career in Hartford and then won a cup in Carolina. It would be weird. Like keeping a picture of your first love in the mix after you got marrried. Total HOF'er, total all time Penguin, just don't think you can retire his #.

Jagr, I think yes, but I don't see it happening.

Mike Lange should get a banner when he retires.

Of course, I don't watch Dexter or have a clue about the Indian in the Cupboard, so disregard everything above.

brett said...

You're right on, Steve. Give Mike Lange a number of his choice, and immediately retire it in his name.

re: retiring numbers.

I'm still on the fence for Barrasso. Yeah, the Pens never missed a postseason with Tommy B in net, but I'm sure his behavior off the ice will rub people the wrong way. Ask me one day, and I may say thumbs up to retiring #35, or I may say to hell with him because of several weak goals that ultimately cost the Pens two chances of going to the Cup finals.

Francis had 600+ pts (not to mention another 100 postseason pts), was probably one of the best two-way centers in the league, and even won some individual hardware like a Selke, two Lady Byng trophies, and a +/- award for leading the league. Most players would take that as a career. Francis did all of that in what was the equivalent of 7 seasons (split numbers from the 90-91 season & shortened 94-95 season was the equal of 3/4s of a typical year.) Retire #10? Is this even a question? Hell yeah you do.

Jagr? No...not yet. Regardless of a player is more than likely not returning to the NHL, I'd hold off until he retires from Omsk or wherever he chooses to play before a banner is hung in his name. No player in the mid to late 90s dominated a game like Jagr. Ask the 99 Devils how hard it was to stop an injured Jagr, who might have been playing at 50%.

Neil Wilkinson can have a banner in one of the press boxes.

wilsmith said...

shouldnt the duff photo been labeled as they "dressed up as celebrities"

Jonny Van Mundegaarde said...

I like how the Pens are actually discriminating when retiring numbers (cough,cough...Adam Graves...cough, cough) But I think the other players mentioned are fine in the ring of honor. It'll be interesting to see how it translates to the new building. Maybe it'll actually be an actual ring instead of just a sweet banner.

dying alive said...

Doakes = all business. Best show on TV, though I'm about a season behind and know I know a spoiler. Oh well.

I'd support retiring Jagr's number (in a couple of years, after he retires). He gets booed here now and Pens fans have a love/hate relationship with him, but aside from #66 nobody has done more in a Pens uniform so far. I'd also support retiring #35, even though Tommy B is a class A douchebag.

Not so much on Francis. I love the guy, but he will always be a Whaler/Cane first and foremost. He's on the Ring of Honor or whatever it's called and that's sufficient IMO.

Badger Bob should have a banner up there, though, no question.

akus - what a great call. What a great human being. I can't even think about that man without tearing up, which means every time they play that damn commercial or I walk into the Igloo, I'm sniffing back the snot.

Simpler, more beautiful words have never been spoken.

"It's a great day for hockey."

If anyone knows the name to the song they played in his tribute on Thanksgiving Eve so many years ago... the one that starts "So we never know where life will take us..." I will be forever grateful. I've never been able to figure it out with the Google.

Go Pens.

are you talking about during the candlelight ceremony they had pregame???

Goodbye My Friend

I'm not sure of the original vocalist...but this is definitely the song.

I was in attendance for both this game/ceremony and the last game he 'coached':

A Canada Cup exhibition game at the Igloo between the US & Canada...I remember the ovation he got as he walked around the end boards from the Penguins runway to the bench.

Memory + tearjerker city.

Dude, Jagr was more than a beast. As much as a lot of the people in Pittsburgh hate him, he was...well, you all know how amazing he was, so I don't need to say it. haha.

Will they retire his number? I'm thinking probably not, but who else has WORN his number since he left?

Totally agree with the Mike Lange idea. Give his 99, because HE'S the Great One. haha.

PS. I don't actually remember writing that comment last night. Good sign? I'd say so.

fleuryous said...

I used to dislike Hilary Duff...I'm not entirely sure why, I just did. Lame, I know.

Now, I realize that I just don't even care about her anymore. Probably because her boyfriend plays for the Islanders.

footndale, it's called the Souper Bowl, it's on the 900 block of fifth avenue. Go upstairs.

"It's a great day for hockey - Badger Bob Johnson" should be a permanent part of the ice surface

Footndale, I second the recommendation for The Souper Bowl. Like Jonny said, go upstairs to the bar area. It's kind of a dive, but it's the best Pens bar dahntahn. Good times always. Order the fish sandwich if you haven't eaten in a week. It's a monster.
