GD25 -- It's A Great Day For Hockey

Nothing else needs to be wasted here.
[GoingFiveHole] said everything we were thinking.

17 years ago today, Bob Johnson passed away.
This Gameday is in his memory.

It is a great day for hockey.

March 4, 1931-November 26, 1991

*Sgt. Doakes made the class move and let this be Bob Johnson's night.

I was only barely turning 5 when Badger Bob passed, but I can remember watching some of the Stanley Cup games from the previous year and my Dad praising Bob for how he handled the players.

I guess it was fitting that at midnight it was raining in California for the first time in what seems like forever.

Lost, but not forgotten.

Rest easy, Bob.

Speaking of awesome dudes, Johnny V, thanks for that info from last post. That's why you are a big deal.

Hopefully the Isles give the Pens ample chance to show off the "improved" power play and they can make this surefire boring-ass game a little bit more fun.

GO PENS

Rest in Peace Bob. What a coach, what a man.

Quingo77 said...

Guys,

Not sure if someone has suggested this before... but what about signing free agent Dwayne Johnson... aka "the Rock" to lay the smack down on the candy asses in the NHL?

BlacknGold66 said...

Jonny V is a huge deal.

It is indeed a great day for hockey.

Let's Go Pens!!!

chris e said...

Let's do this shit!

powerhouse said...

I will never forget how Bob made us all believe in the Pens and ourselves. He was a great guy who really loved life. He just went so suddenly in his prime. I think thats why it still is painful for everyone. God bless Bob and his family.

Allison said...

Omg... Now I wish I had thought to make a sign that said "Win it for the badger."

And btw that just brought around the zamboni, and let me tell you how shitty the ice looks, and they haven't even started.

demondg1 said...

Sabu sporting a new lid tonight.

Ice said...

God I hate watching MSG. I wish gamecenter would let me choose which TV broadcast I watch.

Jonny Van Mundegaarde said...

Allison, hopefully there'll be a jumbotron tribute to him before the game. Nobody on the team was around when he was Coach, but I'm sure they all appreciate the gravity of this day.

And anytime I can be of service dudes, glad to help

fyi for any out-of-towners: game's on http://www.atdhe.net/live-tv-835.html

Idk if you could see it on tv but godard and hunter just high fived as they skted past each other. aww.

Allison said...

And sid's making painful faces after the whistle blows. He's hurtin'.

demondg1 said...

The Islanders have the stupidest post goal music ever.

jbart321 said...

Wow, that video made me tear up a bit. What a great coach, he is missed.

Allison said...

Alright, I've been in attendance for a bunch of Pensguin goalie's first games, but I don't want to be in the situation to see Curry's

demondg1 said...

The ice at the outdoor rink in North Park is better than that sheet on Long Island.

oddjobber said...

They should make another post so we can talk shit about the game. I feel bad talking shit in badger bob's thread.

oddjobber said...

The NY Islanders are the Chinese Democracy of the NHL

pengylady said...

My other favorite Badger Bob quote:

"Every day's a bonus, guys, and don't ever forget it . . . . "

Words to live by Cbloggers!

pops said...

on the bright side, it can only get better, right? please?

pops said...

jesus, this is getting worse.

jayness said...

Mud.

pops said...

they should keep passing, pass it all the way into the net.

wake up.

jayness said...

I'd like to see how many SOG we've had in the past 10 minutes. Unreal.

Steve In Denver said...

The MSG announcers are really annoying. Hopefully the Pens get through this akward stage of puberty and start dominating and shut them up.

pops said...

oh, hey, sid's playing!!! thats probably good.

pops said...

what the fuck

oddjobber said...

New York Islanders, see you in the playoffs in 2043..

jayness said...

Let's see what Curry can do.

Docciavelli said...

John Curry Time!

Anna. said...

FACK.

pops said...

im going to watch this game, but im done posting, because its bullshit to waste my time posting my frustration about a team thats not even in the building.

also, the "HEEEEY you suck!" cheers by the islanders fans... really? really? the pens suck? i mean, yea i guess this game, but christ. what hypocrisy.

PenguinsExperience.com said...

Curry, eh?

Interesting.

Steve In Denver said...

Allison = sage with the goalie prediction.

oddjobber said...

Time for some hot curry!

oddjobber said...

Ha, just read Crosby's lips- "F-ing J-sus Christ!"

They'll turn it around in the 3rd. This is embarrassing.

Allison said...

Time for some CURRY!!!

And a comeback too please?

Ice said...

Was there anyword on Talbot?

Docciavelli said...

epic fail on the breakout tonight. We can't get Whits back quick enough.

PenguinsExperience.com said...

Are these the PITTSBURGH Penguins or did some other team dress tonight?

LargeTurkey said...

I almost went to this game. I'm glad I didn't the Pens look horrible. Its time to bring up Janne. NANANANA.

LargeTurkey said...

Dupuis is a clown. He looks to much like Michelle Oulette to be any good.

PenguinsExperience.com said...

I'm stuck watching the New York feed.
The announcers are acting like the Islanders are the greatest team in NHL history.

Also, I can hear another channel quietly in the background.

jefe p said...

i havnt started this game yet, but GO PENS.

im sorry for those that have to watch the NYI broadcast.

its a great life for hockey.

jayness said...

Would you rather they keep talking about how pathetic we've been?

Docciavelli said...

sumbitch. Thought it was 3-1.

pops said...

oh yay, fucking post. fuck you hockey gods, go fuck yourselves.

Docciavelli said...

Can we play the whole game shorty?

pops said...

joey macdonald. why do these fucking scrubs always have big days against the pens?

Kyle said...

Seconding Alison's SAGE goaltending prediction...

and pointing out that Elmo who has been praised for being playing particularly well and aggressive against the islanders, has been kept silent and unnoticed.

So, it honor of Alison's prediction...

TK-Me Elmo Hat Trick?

DO IT FOR THE BADGE!

PenguinsExperience.com said...

Wow, I wish the team was shorthanded all the time.

Hopefully this turns into one of the traditional "look pathetic for two periods and then come back with an offensive storm in the third" games.

LargeTurkey said...

Malkin is a beast, but he can't be aiming for the post.

pops said...

as far as comebacks are concerned, the pens come back because they play well, win battles, yea they fall behind, but they have something to build on. what do you build on in this game? going offside on a 2 on 1?

i believe, but i need to see something that they can build on.

jayness said...

Anytime you give thousands of Long Island-ese the chance to chant "Joey", you know it's time to start rolling.

Prediction: Staalsy with 3 shorties. Do it.

Docciavelli said...

I'm going to burn down Nassau Coliseum if I have to see that Nystrom clip one more fucking time. Get over it Isles fans, 1980 was a long time ago.

jovi said...

thank you tank for that game against the wings, but u suck balls

Docciavelli said...

Did they just all sing "if you're happy and you know it?" Is Charlie from Long Island?

Kyle said...

"They really haven't allowed the Penguins to be NIFTY with the puck"

Really New York media?

are we still in the 40's & 50's???

jayness said...

FREE CANDY.

pops said...

by far the worst are the rangers. if there was an award for a team sucking its own dick about a stanley cup that happened almost 15 years ago week in and week out, msg would win every time. hell, theyd be the only ones up for it. its like the pens having a special about the 1992 cup every week plus commercials plus mike lange interviews about how it felt plus a whole channel basically dedicated to it.

wow. orpik is carrying our offense. woo. something to build on

Docciavelli said...

about time. Free Candy.

Kyle said...

FREE CANDY!

dark hard candy for Joey Mac.

Anna. said...

Finally.

Free Candy... Niceee.

PenguinsExperience.com said...

Goals by Brooks Orpik: 2
Goals by Ryan Malone: 4

Go Free Candy!

jayness said...

Tanger has got to be falling further into depression when Orpik has 2 goals and he's still sitting on a goose egg for the year.

Allison said...

Holy shit largeturkey- I could never place his familiarity but you hit it right on.

PenguinsExperience.com said...

Did they just all sing "if you're happy and you know it?"

Yes.

That was one of the strangest crowd moments ever.

Ariana13xy said...

Am still watching the MSG feed, but couldn't handle the announcing coupled with some secondary audio in the background talking about enjoying Detroit Lions football... who are you!?!?

Mute the MSG and go with the Lange audio... if you hit pause, it syncs up w/ the visual...

Let's Go Pens... 3rd Period Comeback Kids!

PenguinsExperience.com said...

"Mute the MSG and go with the Lange audio... if you hit pause, it syncs up w/ the visual..."

I'm gonna try that. That secondary audio is driving me nuts.

Ice said...

Tampa Bay 4:09, Ryan Malone 5 (power play)

Damnit he is just trying to show up Brooks.

jayness said...

Looks like "Hey There Malone" lit a fire under his ass.

Just for the record they're not really singing if you're happy and you know it... It has diff words but I don't remember what they are right now.

pops said...

the pens are gonna get jobbed

PenguinsExperience.com said...

The Lange audio sinks up perfectly!

This is awesome.

Anna. said...

PenguinsExperience.com said...

MAN HAVE I EVER MISSED HEARING MIKE LANGE CALL GOALS WHILE WATCHING THE GAME!!!

jovi said...

boucher doesn't hit the net to often... he might want to practice on that.

pops said...

grrrrr. why couldnt they play like this in the 1st!? haha. momentum is so huge in this fucking sport.

jayness said...

Thank god I muted the MSG feed so I could hear Lange call that goal. Ariana ftw.

jovi said...

OMG, Malkin craps excellence

Ice said...

@PenguinsExperience.com

I know this is 100000000x better than MSG jobbers.

Ice said...

6:30:52 PM: i wanna see geno get the hatty on an empty netter

I love being right.

pops said...

i gotta say, it was so frustrating watching this game, but you always have that hope of a big 3rd. and man, this team, when it turns it on... speechless.

big win. congrats to geno.

Anna. said...

Geno hat trick.
Curry got a big win on his first NHL game.

I love this game.

M. Vanderlasser said...

Great Glam, what a game!!!

Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!!!

Geno's post-game interview was classic.

johnny said...

Penguins Mania! WOOOOOO!!!

Docciavelli said...

Anyone else get the feeling there was some divine intervention there?

Badger Bob for the win.

It's a great day for hockey.

M. Vanderlasser said...

P.S. Curry just got shaving creamed while "I, Potash" was interviewing him...

LargeTurkey said...

We really have to start trying during other periods than the third. Its really ridiculous how bad we were and then how good we were. Against good teams (Vancouver) its harder to come back from a big deficit in the third.

Docciavelli said...

Dare I say: Badger Bob Buries It?

Nulpher said...

Curry gets the towel of Shaving Cream...

nikki said...

what a gaaaame
anyways i missed the first half cause i was in class, and i was wondering if anyone knew what happened to max?
geno = beast

stokes said...

Still totally gay for Geno...

Docciavelli said...

"Bolts" third jersey looks like ass. Hairy ass at that.

M. Vanderlasser said...

@Nikki, Max caught a slap-shotted puck to the foot - he dragged himself off the ice but wasn't able to put weight on the foot...

nikki said...

thanks
that sucks though, hope he's okay

Stoosh said...

Errey got the report during the game that Talbot was doubtful to return. Normally, if a player sustains an injury that early in the game and can't come back, they'll say so. "Doubtful" tells me that he probably could've come back if absolutely necessary, but they told him to take the rest of the night off and not risk anything serious.

nikki said...

maybe since he's had foot issues before, it's more of a precaution?
thanks for keeping me in the loop
i was a little choked when i left school it being 2-0 and then got home to 3-0
yet somehow...everything ends up okay wooo

blufftalk said...

  "I, Potash." Just awesome.

Susan Burghart said...

"Shoot hard! Shoot everybody! Great game!"

When in doubt, follow the game strategy. Explained in plain English by the great Evgeni Malkin.

Going Five Hole said...

somewhere, Badger Bob is smiling right now after this win

Allison said...

Hahaha stunned does not even begin to describe nassau shitiseum

brett said...

Badger Bob would not allow a loss tonight.

Hip said...

The bar was too noisy and I couldn't really hear what Geno was saying, but he certainly looked like he'd been speaking English all his life. Never seen him string that many words together without looking lost at some point.

So glad to see him take Ovie's hat trick and respond with one of his own.

And Going Five Hole already said what I really wanted to contribute here. This one put a big smile on the man upstairs I'm sure.

Rage said...

Steve In Denver said...

I sure am glad I had to go to the store to run thanksgivingblog and missed the frickin third period.

C'mon, NHL network. Can't wait to see highlights.

fleuryous said...

"Did they just all sing "if you're happy and you know it?""

Think about it...how many times are they actually happy? Let them relish in it...and then allow Geno and Crosby to dual-handedly crush their dreams.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

For the record, I think the title of this post should be "Don't call it a comeback." LL Cool J style.

Also.
Crosby + Geno= Dream Team

Eric Godard=Cream Team.

You HAVE to love him.
I know I do.

Hilary is NOT giving Comrie any tonight.

GOOOOOOOO PENS.

mallori said...

Malkin interview:

Here

It's about 2/3 of it, missing the first question. He's answering some sort of question about Crosby, that's who the "best player in the NHL" is.

fleuryous said...

Oh, forgot to comment on the Malkin interview:

Priceless. That dude never seems to compliment himself, always the other guys. Couple that with a gimme Staal empty-netter, Geno deserves that Jesus PS that was composed last year (by the way, if you haven't seen it, you REALLY need to. haha.)

One of my favorite quotes in life:

"We play great game."
That and "we can't save the motherland in five minutes."

He's a sublime orator. Simply flawless.

I know Obama writes most of his speeches, but I feel like he should give Malkin a chance.

"USA great."

Kyle said...

Geno was the physical embodiment of the spirit of 'Badger' Bob tonight.

I wish I could have seen only the last 21 minutes of it though.

GO PENS

fleuryous said...

And I wear my Orpik jersey with pride, disregarding the fact that it's 45509845 sizes too big for me.

Dude's a BEAST. And I'd be gay for him if I were a male.

In fact, I'm going to go ahead and say I'm gay for him right now.

He makes me spontaneously grow a penis...an erected penis, at that.

AAAAAAAAAAnd I'm done.

I'm thankful for big third periods and Geno hattricks and Godard buffoonery.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Dr. Turkleton said...

Brian Campbell getting booed in San Jose every time he touches the puck...wonder if the same will happen to Hossa in the Igloo??? [/sarcasma]

Wonder if Max has a gimpy ankle and can't play on Friday...who gets the call from WB/S?

Maybe HCMT will just move Eaton up to forward. [/sarcasma overdose]

King.[aka: sh0ez]...
Quit blaming your players for not being in your lineup...especially when one of your guys 'dressed' [Briere] isn't even playing! You're starting to sound like Melrose!

did the SJ Shark announcer dude just say: Premature Jubilation?!?!?!

Allison said...

My pictures from the game (this is what $10.00 can get you at Nassau Coliseum)

Annie said...

Holy crap, those are great seats, Allison. How did you get your tickets?

SteelPensBucs said...

That video never fails to bring tears to my eyes. Badger brought us a "Season From the Heart" and made everyday a great day for hockey.

The Islanders sent an email inviting me to buy tickets for this game. I would have gone if I had a way there.

What a range of emotions. The first 39 minutes were crap, which has happened to me in the past at the Nassau Mausoleum. But the last 21 more than made up for it. Malkin proving once again he is a beast.

Happy Thanksgiving to the Staff, for being the ultimate authority on Penguins news, and to the rest of CommentorBlog. You guys and girls make this a must visit whenever I get the chance to use the Internet.
