The Penguins don't get a Saturday off until January 17.

I traded back for Staal in the off-season. Still kept Kovalchuk. Bitchin'.

Whitney is looking more and more like trade bait. I want to see how he plays when he comes back. If he's still squatting to piss in his own end, we should dump him. If he doesn't play physical, he has nothing on Go-Go and Letang. They may be smaller, but if Whitney doesn't use his size then it doesn't matter. We should free up the cap space for Staal.

I've never been down on Staal or considered trading him. I don't care if he scores under ten goals a season. He's a very valuable part of this team, always has been and always will be. If he scores goals, it's a bonus. I'm talking about Whitney because of Go-Go's play.
That's why I said I want to see how he plays when he comes back. We're obviously going to have to give him a while to show he's healthy to get fair value for him. I think Letang is good enough to cover for Whitney. Go-Go will likely trail off as the season wears on, as he is a rookie. Maybe not. We get Gonch back at some point in the spring. We still have Sydor. I don't know. I think Whitney is definitely trade bait. I'm not saying before the trade deadline or anything. I would definitely advocate getting rid of him to free up the space that might be needed to sign Staal.
I'm just not a big Whitney fan. He could prove me wrong and make me a fan if he plays his size when he comes back. He was injured last year, so I have to take that into consideration.
We have a better record when losing heading into the third period, than we do when leading heading into the third period.

And remember, we usually don't start playing real well until January.

The crowd was one of the best/loudest so far this season. The third period was extremely boring and once the Penguins scored to tie, it wasn't really quiet again. It was pretty loud in the second too. Tons of Let's Go Pens chants, especially when the odd Let's Go Sabres/Let's Go Buffalo chants started.
If you (I'm talking about people in general) are watching on FSN Pittsburgh, you don't get a good feel for the crowd at all because they have horrible sound.
I can probably video the Malkin interview and post it on youtube if you dont mind crap quality...

I was more than expecting a let down tonight but the boys found a way to pull it out.

Just some more of me looking at random stats: the Penguins have scored the most goals in the East. The only teams with more goals scored are Detroit and San Jose.
I'm no saying that Go-Go is Paul Coffey. He's a rookie. He drives me nuts when he hangs Malkin out to dry on the power play. He's ultra aggressive to the point of being reckless. He makes rookie mistakes. That will cease in time. I don't, however, feel comfortable relying on him for the playoffs.
What I am saying is this: in terms of the near future Staal is more valuable than Whitney. We have several defensemen than can bring an equivalent skill set as Whitney. Staal is special. If Whitney gets better defensively, he might close the gap with Staal in terms of utility. I just don't think that Whitney is worth the cap hit and if it comes to keeping one or the other, I think Staal should stay and we should dump Whitney.

It's not definitely an either or, but it could be if Staal keeps producing like this. He's going to ask for around 4 million a year if he puts up 25-30 goals this year. Whitney has a pretty large cap hit, one that I would rather see allocated to Staal if it comes down to it.

That's all fine and good. Staal has stated that he wants to stay here. I think he'll take a little less like Crosby, Malkin, Orpik, Fleury, etc. I trust Shero, but he can't do anything about the cap. We are pretty tight up against it right now.
It may very well come down to a choice between Staal and Whitney. We need wingers. Sykora is up at the end of this season. Satan and Fedotenko are on one-year deals. The cap might restrict in light of the world-economic situation. There are a lot of variables that make the situation complicated and dependent on more than the character and avarice of the players.

I agree. I was at the game tonight and for a little bit there it is true that fans were a bit quiet. Hell I have no voice anymore, and was told repeatedly by my section's usher to watch my language but I was livid that we were getting double-teamed by the horrible officiating of the Penguins hating Devorski Duo. Yes, there are two of them - one is a lineman and the other is a referee. And they both blew some easy calls and made some weak ones.
But I digress, the team wasn't feeling it in the first and neither were the fans. As the game wore on and we finally got some offense going the crowd livened up a bit and started overpowering/hijacking the "Lets Go Buffalo/Sabres" chants every time they sprouted up. The best was toward the end of the third when we had taken the lead Sabres fans were trying to rally the team with a good old "Lets Go Buffalo" which turned into a earthshaking "Go Home Buffalo" within seconds.
