Back in the saddle again, finally.
The Oilers are coming off a terrible loss last night.
Up 4-2 in the third, Columbus comes back and wins it in regulation.
So they are going to be pissed.

Pens haven't played since last year.
Hopefully the break was a chance to get a little more healthy.
Sans the all-star break and a small vacant spot in the middle of September,
we won't see another layoff like this for the rest of the season.

Last time I checked, that's the way the draft was supposed to work. The idea is to give bad teams a chance to select the upper-echelon prospects first.
Not sure if you were insinuating that the team tanked for five straight years (which means you probably got the Official Anti-Penguins Talking Points Memo from the Flyers/Caps Nation), but just in case...Quick history...
We sucked in 2001-02 because Jagr was traded prior to the season and Kovalev, Straka, Lang and Lemieux all got hurt and missed huge amounts of time. Take any team's top four forwards away from them and they'd all suck, too. That resulted in the Pens getting the fifth overall pick, which they used to take Ryan Whitney.
In 2002-03, Lemieux, Kovalev and Straka managed to keep the team hanging around through February. The Pens maintained an outside shot at the playoffs until mid-February when they traded Kovalev (who was gone in free agency at the end of the year anyway). They collapsed in March and that killed their post-season chances. That summer, the Pens had the third pick in the draft, but traded up to first overall and took Fleury.
In 2003-04, with a lockout looming and arena negotiations turning nasty, they went into full-fledged rebuild mode and asked the fans to be patient because everyone knew the lockout and a better economic system was on the way. The fans got on board with the team for the most part; we were willing to deal with it knowing better days were ahead. After that season, we took Malkin in the draft.
In 2004-05, there was no season and when the lockout ended, we were flat-out lucky to win the Crosby lottery. There isn't one Pens fan who will dispute that.
In 2005-06, we sucked because an 18-year old kid was our best player and we had a bad mix of veterans and a coach who was overmatched to begin the season. Many of the veterans either couldn't accept diminished roles or were too slow to keep up with the new rules. The team stumbled terribly out of the gate, but waited until they were 30 games in to make a change at head coach. The team played better after Therrien was brought on board and management turned the team over to the other prospects like Whitney, Orpik, Talbot and Armstrong, many of whom were seeing their first ever action at the NHL level along with Crosby. Craig Patrick was fired. Ray Shero was hired. The Pens drafted second overall, which turned into Jordan Staal.
So really, the team only "tanked" one season - 2003-04. The rest of the way, the draft worked the way it was supposed to work - by allowing bad teams chances to draft upper-echelon younger talent.
What has made it look great is not just the drafting of Crosby, but the emergence of Fleury and Malkin as elite, world-class talents. A lot of people thought Malkin would be good...I don't think they expected him to be THIS good. And I don't think anyone expected Fleury to be this good this quickly.

Yeah, I was never knocking the draft, or how the system works. It makes sense to me, because why make the rich richer?
I'm just jaded and bitter at the fact that this decade the Oilers have been just bad enough to miss the playoffs by a few points, or sneak in and get beaten out early, ergo not being able to draft anyone as note worthy as some other teams.
And it's my duty to rip on the Pens for having less than stellar resaults until just recently, because that's the only thing keeping me from offing myself because of this awful showing, or no showing as it were.
In conclusion, pens suck, Pittsburgh smells like (insert smell here), and the women aren't pretty.

If you ever read John Buccigross's columns on ESPN.com, I think he has it dead on. He said this is the best way for teams to rebuild in the current NHL. The problem is that a lot of franchises (and fans) aren't willing to be patient for three or four years and allow the club to bank some younger, high-quality talent.
But this is why teams that build through the draft or through some smart trades often win, and why teams that try to quick fix through free agency or short-sighted deals find little success. In today's NHL, it's become a young players' game. Look at Gagner...in the pre-lockout NHL, that kid probably doesn't crack the lineup for another year or two, at least.
It's now very possibly to have kids in their teens or very early 20s not just playing in the NHL, but contributing on a regular basis. The game is more geared towards the younger generations.
The Oilers are going to be fine because I think they've taken some of the right young players and are allowing those players to develop at this level.
