Covered In Oil Shut Down

Sort of stunning news coming from Oiler land.
One of the best blogs in Oil nation is ending, due to some shady shit by the Oilers.

***Just to clarify. Covered in Oil isn't shutting down, David Barry, who this happened to, is leaving the blog. And we don't blame him.

"I'm pretty much done with the Oilers organization in any capacity for the foreseeable future. Up until this point, I was nothing but cooperative and apologetic for what happened, and was met with nothing but irrational hostility at worst and condescending patronization at best. They did finally show some understanding, but that was only after I had pointed out that they were either making it up as they went along, applying an obvious double standard or too stupid to read the blogs of two fairly well established media people to look for this kind of egregious violation of their sacred media pass. And even after that, they threw in some condescending patronization, just in case I might want to chalk up their change of heart to magnanimity. I hope most of you will understand exactly why I'm no longer interested in writing about an organization that has decided to dump on me for having the temerity to care about them and treat their wishes with respect."

Go to [Covered In Oil] for the full story.
It is no question an interesting situation to bloggers.

We wish them the best.

Go Pens

What a crock. Some organizations, inside the sports world or out, still Just Don't Get It.

All the best to the proprietor of Covered In Oil. Hey, maybe Kevin Lowe will feel bad and sign him to an offer sheet.

I guess ice cream sandwiches are too high a price to pay for worldwide publicity.

Hopefully other teams' management are taking notes.

That is just amazing and scary and just wrong all at the same time.

Makes me wonder what GMRS thinks about bloggers at games....has the staff ever heard a peep from anyone in the Pens organization?

Is the game on national TV today?

My NHL Gamecenter has is blacked out and i saw it was on NHLN.

I check my NHL network on comcast and it doesn't even have a game on at that time.

So what's the deal?

Just to clarify: Covered in Oil isn't completely shutting down. Just Dave is leaving, after his shitty treatment. Chris and Mike are still with the site, at least for now. Don't know what will happen because of all of this, but as of right now they'll still have two writers.

@Thomes08: Do you get FSN Pittsburgh? If so, that is why you're blacked out for NHLN.

This is the TV coverage from NHL.com:
CBC(HD), NHLN-US, FSN-P (HD)

You get the joy that is Steigy and Bob instead of Jim Hughson and Craig Simpson. Poor you.

@TheNWChica

I do not get FSN pittsburgh i am in indiana.

What do you mean nhl.com? I have the gamecenter online through that site but that feed is blacked out because it is being nationally televised on NHL network.

On my comcast cable here in indiana i have the NHL network, but my cable box guide lists a bunch of shows during that time slot, not the pens game.

The NHL network website shows the game is on the nhl network. The websites listing on what is on right now also differs from what is on MY nhl network channel.

Yes i'm sure i have the nhl network it says so in the graphics and i was able to watch the pens' first game of the season on that channel.

Ugh this is annoying i'm trying to plan my night and this determines where i go haha.

go pens!

edit nvm my comment about it being on nhl.com, i read your post wrong.

but still something is weird for me

Pensblog Staff said...

The Pens have never really contacted us about anything we've written or how they would want to us to do shit.

The only contact we've had was when we posted leaked images of the new RBK unis back in the day, and they asked us to take it down.

And we tracked down and sent a high-quality .mp3 of the Hossa song to their game-presentation department last season to use in games.

It kind of makes me wonder how much the organization watched you. Clearly Pensblog is widely popular with fans and growing more so all the time; I wonder if they keep an eye on you.

I get the feeling that the Penguins organization is pretty understanding of the whole blogging thing. At least, they've never done anything to suggest the contrary.

Rage said...

I'd say if they're not then somebody's slipping, but as far as helping staff? I think not. Apply for press creds and see what happens. If Bettman insists on control over individual team websites, what do you think he'd have to say about that sort of thing? Besides, I like what these guys do like it is. "Input" from the organization could get....troublesome

@chica- I am getting blacked out on CBC tonight. Instead I get to watch the Sens/Bruins game, oh lucky me. Have I mentioned how much I hate the Sens lately. The rest of the province gets to watch Pens/Toronto but not me. :(

If anybody knows where it will be online tonight I would appreciate a link.

Rage - Very welcome, glad I could bring something important to the table. I figured that was something those of us on cblog, and Pensblog readers in general, would find of interest. I am in total agreement with you - it's messed up, and it's a damn shame. Best of luck to him in the future - it's too bad the Oilers didn't realize what a valuable fan and resource they just screwed over.

Car finally purchased and still awake, 21 hours and counting! BRING ON THE LEAFS! WOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Boooo! I'm sorry Carroll.

So....any way someone could job the oil? Just askin...

That's a damn shame.

This type of thing couldn't happen to tPB due to...

1)tPB Staff doesn't work for the Pens, nor do they have a press pass, sit in the press box during games, etc. etc. This kind of thing could happen to Seth at EN (which would be fucking tragic since that's a great blog)... but I don't see the Pens suddenly telling the Post-Gazette that he's no longer welcome.

2)The Bill of Rights.

Go Pens!!!

If you are going to the game tonight can you take some pictures. I am using them for Pens Games albums that can be found here.

http://web.me.com/zachtyke/Team_PensBlog/
Pens_Games_Photos/Pens_Games_Photos.html

You can email them to the link posted on the site. Also trying to get some of the music that is from the game listed on there too, same thing goes for that email me what you know.

Thanks a lot! and of course,

What is the NHL gonna do about this double standard towards "professional" boggers and "non-professional" bloggers? Because all these press-pass holding pretenders are getting ideas from guys like Lowetide, Wanye Gretz, and DMFB who just got shafted.

GOILERS!
