Now I bet we all feel bad for peeing in the faces of Flyers fans when they were without Coburn and God (Timonen). To me, Whitney and Gonchar are better than Coburn and Timonen, but those 2 Flyers dmen were just as important to Philly as Whit and Sarge are to us.

Let's see if Gogo and Tang are up to the task.

TheLaw said...

While losing Gonch sucks, everyone remember last year, when we lost Fleury? Everyone thought the Pens were screwed, till Conks came up and was unreal. Then Bing went down in January and we thought for sure the season was over, and Malkin got unreal.

I guess what I'm saying is that while this sucks, it'll work out, because the whole Penguins organization is unreal, and someone's going to step up to fill the void.

If losing our best forward and our best goalie didn't stop a cup run, why should losing our best defenceman?

GO PENS!

debrisslide said...

Gogo and LeGame are going to fuck shit up. And when Gonch comes back the Eastern Conference is going to piss their pants.

brendan said...

I like how he said the hit wasn't dirty when the mother fucker obviously left his mother fucking God damn piece of shit fucking feet!

stokes said...

This is bad, but i have faith. While this is just another unlucky break for the Pen injury-wise, this also means that Tang and Gogo can gain yet more experience. Plus, if need be, the Pens could probably outscore everyone.

This may sound goofy, but you make your own luck. As unlucky as it is for the Pens to lose Gonch and Whit, they are just as lucky to have guys that will definitely be able to step in to those shoes and make things happen. And, yes, once again, the team will be better off for it....

my two cents.

norojo said...

sucks losing your 1 and 2 men but let me just drop a few names here:
Orpik, Letang, Goligoski, Scuderi, Gill, Eaton, Sydor
Those 7 stand up to any defensive unit in the conference and if we are in playoff position late in the season imagine the boost that Gonchar and Whitney's returns will be. Keep the faith pens fans

btumpak said...

shiite... someone should mess that douche up

I'm going to miss Sarge so much.

At least Gogo gets his chance.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but Atlanta has reassigned Esposito to Montreal-QMJHL

LOL

PittHockey said...

he'll be rested for... march?

I Have Kasparaitis said...

The hit wasn't dirty, late but not dirty. Orpik and Therrien both said it wasn't a dirty hit. You can't change anything by saying the guy boarded anyways. Gonchar and Whit need time to heal and our defense needs to just do its job. Letang is going to need to produce a bit offensively (which I'm sure we'll get out of him) because Whit and Gonchar have contributed largely in that aspect.

We shall see where this season takes us. Mark Eaton is playing (thank goodness, possibly my fav. defenseman on the team) and we still have the guys who were playing well last season. Scuds will be getting some time which is great from a defensive standpoint.

brndlynn said...

I couldnt agree with Stokes more. This sucks and is semi-frightening because of Whit also being hurt but if there is any team in the NHL that can overcome this its the Pens. From what he told me Whit thinks he should be able to come back in early to mid December and then we'll get Gonch back shortly thereafter....just in time for the push for the playoffs. No worries Pens fans. We're still solid.
Go Pens.

debrisslide said...

Is Koci even going to make the Tampa Bay team? I kind of hope so, I want to see someone really kick his ass, as bad as that sounds. Funny, apparently we drafted him in 2000.

aunt penny said...

TrustShero.

Pens are deep.
Speedy recovery, Goncho!

By the way......thought for sure when I checked in, I would see a salute to Newman in his Chiefs uniform.

Since it's missing......."Here's to you Paul".

I Have Kasparaitis said...

Koci isn't likely to make the team. He's not in Europe if I recollect properly, so no.

Yeah, he racked up some nice penalty minutes with the Baby Pens. His job is to fight, so he does his job. He has like over 600 or 700 penalty mintues in WBS. Michel coached him for a little while actually.

If you want to see his ass kicked, search him fighting Chara.

aunt penny said...

Many years ago, the highlight of the summer was watching Slapshot while they tried to sell Pens ticket packages on tv.

Yeah, you could actually get tickets.

Flyer Hater said...

People who are bitching about the Koci hit need to stop watching hockey immediately.

Gonchar usually sucks the first few months anyway. Pens D is still better than most of the Eastern Conference.

christina said...

ugh. Not the news I was hoping for.

Any D without Gonchar has lost something big, but we still have a defense corps that (for the most part) played together all of last year, and got quite good in terms of playing positionally sound defense. If Tanger and Gogo can step up and fill the hole left on the power play, I think we'll be fine till Gonch gets back.

Max's quote from when Bing went down applies here too...
"If we do good without him, well we'll be great with him."

Flyer Hater said...

Listen people, Gonchar is good and had one hell of a playoff but he's not a reincarnation of Ray Bourque and Larry Robinson. Let's not start sounding like Flyers fans.

TheNWChica said...

Someone better go buy some extra bubblewrap for under Eaton's pads!

dying alive said...

Regardless of how clean or dirty the hit was, I hope David Koci contracts flesh eating bacteria and spreads it throughout the TB locker room.

That said, the Pens will be fine. Losing Gonchar is big, but not devastating.

This is a bad blow but it's not a death knell. Everyone who saw what this team did last year knows that.

I'm climbing on the PSAMP bandwagon on this one.

xxstolichnayaxx said...

why is everyone so worried about gonchar and whiney whitney...ok so gonchar can shoot...but so can letang and sydor and goligoski and all 3 of those guys are waaaaaaay better in their own end...gonchar is so lazy hes good for atleast 2 hooking/ holding penalties a game, and whitney is the worlds biggest pussy...not only that they are both way over paid.....all they are this season is deadline day bait anyways

fleuryous said...

FUCKING KOCI.

I hope Orpik SLAMS him.

xxstolichnayaxx said...

oh and just some food for thought the pens made it to the playoffs the first time they won the cup without mario and then won

fleuryous said...

Gonch is lazy? He is the second-highest scoring defenseman in the NHL.

Stop your blasphemous talk.

fleuryous said...

I'm sad, but I'm definitely not panicking.

We have Gogo, LeTang, Orpik, Eaton, etc.

I hope he gets better soon, though.

Stilly said...

Now the depth on the blue line makes Shero looks like an even bigger genius than he already is. It'll suck not to have him on the point during power plays, but I think this team can deal.

Pensblog Staff said...

stoli = fail.

I Have Kasparaitis said...

Dying Alive, Bugsy and I do not appreciate the infectious bacteria you want to have attack him. *laughs*

Flyer Hater, you mean all the times early in his career when people said he sucked? A certain game against the Pens comes to mind when he played for the Caps. Don't get me wrong, I love Sergei Gonchar, but Flyer Hater is right.

@xxstolichnayaxx: Do you watch the Pens or do you make your assumptions off of fans who shout "Shoot it!" at games? Because you take a penalty, it doesn't mean you are lazy, and Whit is not a pussy. You don't have to fight or hit a lot to be a tough guy. "all they are this season is deadline day bait anyways" Haha. Gonchar and Whit being bait? That doesn't come up in Shero's mind at all, especially since you couldn't possibly realize how much offensively they have produced for us. Gonchar and Whitney have combined since 2005-06 season with 327 points, which is second in the league behind Rafalski and Lidstrom for defensemen. Get your facts straight before you go about Gonchar and Whitney. Letang started last year with a great season. He was actually up here for a few games the season before and did not perform as well. Orpik's end of the season run was mainly a big deal, and in the past years, he was known to take the check/hit over the responsible play. Hal Gill has been known as a slow defenseman. Goose is an unproven defenseman that needs to bulk up a bit and work off the rough edges of his game. Watch the game before you pretend like you know what you are talking about ...

debrisslide said...

Yeah, everything is going to be fine. Our defense is still pretty sick.

If Gonchar is lazy then I have no idea what Stanley Cup Final you were watching.

fleuryous said...

OH SNAP. haha

LET'S GO STILLERS.

brndlynn said...

@ ihk: stoli IS the fan yelling "shoot" at the games.

i hate when people dont understand the role of an offensive defenseman - dmen arent only there to hit and fight. theres a little more to hockey than that.

25% of the time he plays average

5% of the time he is absolutely terrible

Mendenhall and Parker?

Stoosh said...

What I won't miss from Gonchar being out are the one in every ten games or so when he looks like he just doesn't feel much like playing, and his on-ice decisions seem to reflect just that. I also won't miss the times it seemingly takes him an extra three seconds to get a shot off, allowing a penalty-killing forward to block the shot.

But let's not pretend that this isn't a big loss for the team, either. This hurts. Gonchar was one of the calming forces in the transition game. He was arguably the best on the team at skating the puck out of the zone, and he also knew which outlet passes to make on the breakout (something Whitney was still learning to do, especially under pressure). He is the quarterback on the powerplay and anyone who remembered watching the powerplay during those couple of games when he was hurt hopefully doesn't take his presence for granted.

I've also heard more than one person say he was actually the reason why Orpik finally became an all-around solid force in his own end last year. Gonchar arguably should've been a Norris Trophy finalist last year.

THAT SAID...

The only player Gonchar might surpass in terms of running the transition game on this team is Letang, especially when it comes to skating the puck out. The kid shows poise well beyond his years. And I'll repeat what I said when news broke about Whitney's surgery...this might actually force HCMT to put Letang on that left point on the power play to take advantage of Letang's right-handed shot, especially on the Whitney Play.

Goligoski has had a year playing Gonchar's role in the AHL, so he won't be foreign to the concept of that kind of responsibility; he'll just have to think a little quicker.

Both Orpik and Gill are solid at throwing that outlet pass out of the zone. In fact, that might be the most underrated part of Orpik's game, followed closely by his ability to skate the puck out.

And we still have Sydor, who was very solid last year in the postseason when he finally got in there.

The Pens survived last year without the services of their top player, top goaltender, top penalty-killing defenseman, and top two forechecking forwards (Max & Roberts). They'll see their way through this as well.

Stoosh said...

It could be worse. You could be the Steelers, who are now down to Carey Davis and Mewelde Moore in the backfield. Mendenhall got taken to the locker room after busting up his shoulder. Kendall Simmons got carted off the field. Andre Frazier was taken off on the opening kickoff and immobilized after doing something to his neck (not making any fun of that whatsoever).

The Ravens are pretty much blitzing on every play. You might as well just drape Steelers jerseys over five turnstiles; they'd do a better job than the offensive line is slowing up this rush. This is ridiculous. It's been a long time since I've seen a Steelers offensive line this bad.

TheNWChica said...

Thanks Pensgirl! I sort of tuned out of foo-ball this weekend since the SeaChickens had the weekend off. ;)

Oh, and is it Saturday morning yet????

Stoosh said...

Can someone tell me why we haven't scored a touchdown in the last 8 quarters?

Ohhhhhhhh-line sucks, plain and simple. I never thought I'd see an offensive line as bad as Pitt's was during Tyler Palko's senior year, but this one is close.

Terrell Suggs was beating Marvel Smith so badly earlier, you might as well have given Smith a matador's cape and let him yell, "Ole" every play.

Still love Polamalu, though.

fleuryous said...

Yeah, I knew the obvious answer. haha. It was a rhetorical question.
Our O-line is pretty disgraceful.

And we need goddamn running backs right now. haha

FUCK YES.
SANTONIOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

wilsmith said...

I think when people think of "the guy that runs the power play" they only think of the time spent in the offensive zone.

Sadly, the part of Gonch we'll miss the most is skating the puck from hash marks to blue line.

Remember when he was out last season? That was clearly what hurt the most.

At this point of their career, anyone can fire a one-timer from the point, developing a play is another thing.
