Gameday [1]: Texans vs Steelers

1:00 PM

For all the making fun of the Steelers we do.
We still watch the games.

It isn't a playoff game so the Steelers have a chance.

I love rocking the jeresies of folks no one gives too much a crap about but are still huge parts of the team.

Big Aaron Smith, #91, gonna eat some folks today!

Call me a yinzer all you want, but, Here we go Steelers here we go!

blufftalk said...

The Steelers are still a huge cultural part of this city. Like it or not, they are probably the biggest cultural part.
  Go Pens. Go Steelers.

Gotta love opening day of football. So much pomp and circumstance. So many stories, predictions. Players are running their mouths. Coaches are trying to get their shit together. Pundits are sucking Brady's ass again. Another story on Romo/Simpson. Always a new face on NFL countdown (Keyshawn is just a joy to watch).

Merriman is an idiot btw.

Go Stillers!

Stoosh said...

Tom Brady was just taken to the locker room. Apparently, his leg buckled after a KC lineman rolled up on it. Not good news at all for the Pats.

And Woodley might have just killed Matt Schaub after that sack.

Stoosh said...

I'm not a huge fan of Hines Ward (who has taken over for Jerome Bettis as the president of the Shameless Self-Promotion Dept.), but he just had a 75-yard reception negated by one of the most bullshit offensive pass interference calls I've ever seen.

TheNWChica said...

GO SEAHAWKS! ;p

Stoosh said...

@ NWChica -

Seahawks = my favorite team growing up (Largent, Curt Warner, Freddie Young and yes, the Boz).

Still my second-favorite team behind the Steelers.

TheNWChica said...

@stoosh: they looked pretty good in preseason; I just hope it will be the same in the reg. season.

They're losing at Ralph Wilson right now. :(

TOO GOOD.

Willie Parker is a beast. A goddamn beast. That's why he's my chocolate lover.

GO STILLERS.

Hip said...

Favre is a joke no matter how you slice it.

This is what Brady gets for being listed on the injury report every god-damn week since he started playing. It's just bad karma to call wolf all the time. Can't tell shit on TV of course, but his Lachman test did not look good. Better hope the ACL is not jacked.

shawnawwwesome said...

The movie Iron Man was based on Favre's career. Deal with it.

In other news:

Willie Parker is Willie Parker.

Someone has to say it...

Why is it that the most popular sport in North America...

well...

the thing most prominent, besides of course commercials, the sight most frequently exposed to the eye...

is a huge, steaming pile of colorfully-spandex clad men?

It is for this reason I cannot a)take the NFL seriously, and b)get into American football on any level.

Forget the "tight third down situations" and how ridiculous the officiating procedures are, the thing that, apparently, feverishly captures the attention of American men are huge piles of other steaming men.

I'm not trying to propagate Haterism, I just think its... amusing. Enjoy the game however you want, especially when we go up 35-3.

One last thing... for all you South Park viewers out there.. Every time I read about the Continental Hockey League, or "KHL", I'm reminded of the "WGA", or World Canadian Bureau gag in the Canada on Strike episode.

Pops Freshenmeyer said...

If Tom Brady really is done for the year, that KC lineman deserves the NFL MVP. I don't care if he does nothing but piss on himself on the field the rest of the season, he's had a bigger impact on the NFL season than anyone else.

And to Peter King, I wouldn't be sad at all if Tom Brady is lost for the season. And I don't think too many other Steelers fans, or Jets, Colts, Dolphins, or Bills fans would be terribly upset.

KaylaJ said...

i'm sure i had something amazingly great to say about how tombrady really hurt himself today or how the steelers looked, but i seriously hope the staff says something about this show on fox called the hole in the wall. this is horrible, like a bad car crash that you see in a nightmare where you can't turn away or even wake up from.

Whit is mourning right now because his quarterback got hurt. I, on the other hand, got yelled at because I smiled when they said he's probably out for the season. Okay, I'm not wishing ill-will, but it's convenient as a fan to see this happen. But nonetheless, I'll have to hear about Brady being hurt for an eternity it will seem. Thank God for hockey!

Also, why isn't there anything hockey-wise to talk about except Sundin hurting whatever team he lands with? I'm bored out of my mind trying to avoid doing homework ... I wanna see some predictions regardless of what they say about the Pens. I just want see something that tells me, hockey season's starting ... I may be watching some older NHL commercials like Sid in the shower or the Sedins dancing (which kinda creeps me out and kinda makes me laugh ... such an awkward commercial)

fleuryous said...

Man oh man...if Brady IS out for the season, that will be ridiculous. My housemate is from MA. She'll be bitter. haha

Pops Freshenmeyer said...

Kayla, unless that goat is going to donate an ACL, it won't matter.

Pops Freshenmeyer said...

I've been taunting my wife over Brady's injury. That'll teach her to go with her own family and personal geographical origin (she's from Connecticut) when it comes to football loyalties. There's still time to come over to Big Ben and the Light, though.

That said, I'm willing to bet that my sister-in-law and her boyfriend are absolutely inconsolable right now.

eileenover said...

Well now we know what dlonlo looks like so we can kick him in the face.

jimmypop6996 said...

The only person I would smile about tearing an ACL is Marian Hossa. Any other athlete in the world, it's just unfortunate.

eileenover said...

So who wants to go to rookie/prospect training camp this week?

The Big K said...

I was there, and I went with a neighbor's family of an assistant coach, Lou Spanos. So we sat in the players section and parked in the players lot, and I met Chris Hoke, Charlie Batch, Bruce Davis, and Deshea Townsend.

It was fun, just felt like saying.

Stoosh said...

Adam Schefter from NFL Network is reporting that Brady suffered a severe and potentially season-ending knee injury - rumored to be a torn ACL.

So I suppose this means a few things...

First off, it's a good thing Brett Favre decided to come back this year, because if Peyton Manning were to get hurt tonight, Peter King might wind up catatonic for the rest of the year.

Second, I suppose now we'll see if Belichick really is the coaching genius he's allegedly become in New England. It's a world of difference between Tom Brady and Matt Cassel, and I still always remember Belichick was in Cleveland and couldn't have outcoached Rich F'ing Kotite.

Third, at least now we don't have to spend the season listening to that smug fucking Patriots fan base. Choking away 18-0 in the biggest game of the year (against a team that many felt was lucky to get into the NFC playoffs, let alone to the Super Bowl) and now this.

Patriots fans needed to be reminded that other than this impressive run they've put together since 2001, they've been a mostly ho-hum franchise whose defining moments were being at the bottom of the pile when Refrigerator Perry scored in the Super Bowl XX blowout, and being the team that Brett Favre beat to win his only Super Bowl.

I'd never wish for an athlete to get hurt, but in much the same way I could never be sympathetic towards Lindros's Kasparaitis-induced concussion, I have a hard time being sympathetic towards Brady.

KaylaJ said...

i kinda feel bad brady is hurt, i had so many goat + brady pics planned!

I Have Kasparaitis said...

Woo, Kaspar! I seriously hope that's not considered his defining moment in the NHL as to his GWG against the Sabres *ponders*

Stoosh, you gotta consider that even though he's not that great of a QB, the defense and the offensive line is pretty well off.

jimmypop6996 said...

" I have a hard time being sympathetic towards Brady."

Did he drown your grandma, run over your dog, perhaps read your newspaper before you had a chance to? What exactly has the guy done besides, uh, win?

eileenover said...

Ever heard of cheating jimmy?

KaylaJ said...

i heard brady kicked cam neely's dog

jimmypop6996 said...

I missed the part where that was Brady's idea.

The Big K said...

@Stoosh.

That post was sick.
If he really is out for the year, JOY TO THE WORLD! Hope he never plays ball again.

Pops Freshenmeyer said...

Stoosh, would Peter King being left catatonic really be a bad thing?

J.S. said...

you mention Tombrady and "hole in the wall" on FOX....well, draw you own conclusions.

According to Whitney's facebook,
"Ryan Whitney is very nervous about Thomas Brady."

Hip said...

I called that ACL. Not because that is the most common sports injury when your knee is hit like that and perhaps all of you suspected it, but certainly because I am a physician, and my $160,000 of training has totally paid off.

What's up.

That's right.

Year.

eileenover said...

It wasn't his idea, but he went along with it. That's just as bad. Whatev, I can't stand that son of a bitch or his team.

jimmypop6996 said...

He went along with it as if all 31 other qb's in the NFL would've ratted their team out and risked a job in the league. Yep, Brady is the only asshole in the world to not stand up to Belichick and his staff for what they did. That said, I contend the Patriots weren't the only team doing it, just the only ones that got caught.

Robo-Pope said...

I've got nothing against Brady personally, and it spectacularly sucks for him, but I can't help but smile for the ill will the Patriots organization has earned. This is a killshot to their team this year--that's why I can't help but enjoy it.

KaylaJ said...

i don't like brady or the pats and i won't be apologizing for it any time soon.

shawnawwwesome said...

I'm just hoping Brady's injury doesn't cut short his career of knocking up actresses and leaving them for models.

fleuryous said...

Eh, I'm just glad for the Steelers is all. Honestly, I'm sure a lot of people hate Ben, but maybe not as much, because we don't win as much. haha

But, yeah...I hope we don't choke on semen next weekend against the Browns. UGH, I really hope not.

fleuryous said...

Oooooooooh, low blow Shawn. hahaha.

fleuryous said...

And on a completely unrelated subject, I'm listening to Elton John's Greatest Hits, and it may possibly be giving me a hard on. I bought this album a couple years ago and it's still as good as it was then.

Elton...a staple.

And yes, I am a female.

shawnawwwesome said...

Stoosh said...

Jimmypop,

*smacks forehead*

Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot that as a fan, I'm apparently not allowed to simply dislike the guy as a professional football player.

Dude, please.

I never said I hoped he was hurt. I never said I was glad that he was hurt. I simply said that I'm not going to feel sympathetic towards him as a football player. I'm having a hard time feeling sorry for the guy because I just don't root for him as an athlete.

Yes, it's probably a manifestation of the fact that:

1) I'm sick of hearing about his team and his coach,

2) sick of listening to his fanbase talk like the Patriots franchise has been this icon of NFL history (they've been a joke for most of the 47 years they've been around), and

3) sick of media people like Peter King practically sucking his dick all the time, well, that comes with the territory of being a professional athlete.

Contrary to what Peter King or some other NFL media types will say, the NFL will go on this year with or without Tom Brady, so I could use a little less of Peter acting like it won't.

I get it. Brady wins. Brady's a nice guy. Brady gets the girl. Brady deposits a check every two weeks that's worth more than I make in an entire year. Cool.

What I said was said strictly from the perspective of someone who does not root for the Patriots under most circumstances, and that was it. I didn't expect non-Pens fans to be broken up when Crosby went ankle-first into those boards last year; same principle here.

J.S. said...

"Yeah, I'm a bastard. Come to think of it, so is Brady's kid"

Wow, now that is some top shelf hating.

Stoosh said...

@ Pops Freshenmeyer -

Yeah, I suppose I should retract my recently-printed thoughts on Peter King because I certainly don't want to give the impression that I just can't like a certain aspect of the guy's writing style.

Oops.

I guess I already did give that impression.

Truth? I like Peter King. I read his column every Monday and I appreciate the fact he writes as a fan first and a writer second. He has an insider perspective that he conveys in his writing, but does so usually without losing sight of the fact that he's still a fan of the game.

What I don't like about his writing is that at times, he takes the awestruck fanboy stuff a little too far - namely, with Brady, Favre and Peyton Manning.

Compare his writings with those of John Buccigross - another insider who hits that fan/insider balance almost perfectly, IMHO, and you'll see what I mean.

J.S. said...

and for the record, I'm not worried about Tombrady. Stoosh has already covered most of what I wanted to say. His career isn't over. He's not bankrupt, and he'll more than likely be back next year. With all of that said, that doesn't mean I can't hate on Tombrady for being...well, Tombrady.

LOL, Devin Hester is an idiot. Way to have your team start at your OWN 2, you jackass.

fleuryous said...

Ouch...I'm not 12.

I'M FIRTEEN.

Whatevawhateva.

jimmypop6996 said...

@Stoosh

Regardless of this injury, it's likely not going to change the minds of Patriots fans' minds about their team or qb.

Gloating in his injury just seems kind of pointless since it's now a default excuse for why the Pats don't live up to their billing in 2008.

Akin to why the Flyers lost the Eastern Conf. Final-- no Timonen or Coburn.

But I do get the negativity, I was just playing a bit of devil's advocate to your earlier post.

Jonny Van Mundegaarde said...

@ IHK -

Stoosh, you gotta consider that even though he's not that great of a QB, the defense and the offensive line is pretty well off.

Losing Brady for the season doesn't eliminate NE from playoff contention by any means. Hell, I still recall how the entire hockey world wrote off the Pens after Crosby got hurt last year and we saw how that all turned out. Sure, Sid didn't miss the entire season, but he was out of the lineup long enough that a lesser team likely would've gone in the tank.

The Pats are still going to be a good team, and they'll still be tough to beat. But Brady is what made that offense go. He makes reads and throws with a quickness and accuracy that I'm not sure just any QB can duplicate. If nothing else, this will bring them a little closer to the rest of the pack, and I'll be interested to see how Belichick responds.

SteelPensBucs said...

Being in New England, the Patriots are not the most popular team. That would be the Red Sox. The Sawx get the level of coverage that the Steelers get in Pittsburgh.

That was a good performance for the Steelers today. Parker was great, Roethlisberger was effective. The defense was awesome.

The Buccos tied the MLB record for consecutive losing seasons today. The number is 16 (1993-2008). The question is did anybody notice, or care?

27 days until the regular season opener in Sweden.

fleuryous said...

I could be wrong, but discussion on this blog ranges from how much donuts rule the food world to movie reviews to how much the Pirates suck. Hockey season is still weeks away, a hated (around these parts) pretty boy quarterback goes down with a potential season ending injury, there will be comments relevant to that.

Stoosh, with Belichek's proclivity for signing veterans to minimum money, I can def. see Daunte Cullpepper again throwing bombs to Randy Moss this season. Pro athlete retirements are as reliable as Keith Olbermann's political objectivity
