When the Penguins hit the ice in a couple months across the pond, don't expect to see Ryan Whitney on the bench. He's undergone a procedure to align his foot that will sideline him for 3 months minimum.
According to the [ Trib ] Shero and HCMT "were stunned" by the news.
We'll save you the mental math. The earliest he's back is a couple weeks into the season. But he could be out as long as until January.
Apparently it's something he suffered with since the 07 postseason and they've finally resorted to surgery.
We're no doctors, so osteotomy means nothing to us. But if google images and our ignorance can be trusted, it involves screwing a couple drywall screws into someones heel.

Either that or we're making too big of a deal out of this. I really don't think Whitney will be much better when he comes back. If he's as good as he was two years ago I'd be a little surprised. I'm a downer I guess but I never really cared for him from the time we drafted him.

Ive had more than my share of ankle/foot surgeries including a procedure similar to an osteotomy. If he can really be back in 3-5 thats great but I would be shocked if he's back before the new year. these types of things are a bitch to heal from.

Hey, this is disappointing, but it's good that he's getting it taken care of before the season starts. If the Pens were playing well for the first couple games of the season and THEN we heard about this, we'd be pretty pissed. . .
too bad for whits, but at least its some sort of pens news.
another guy that will be competing for some ice time is danny richmond. he's got some offensive talents as a defenseman and some nhl games under his belt. if gogo is not ready and sydor isn't getting the job done, look for richmond to get some ice time... he's gotta earn it first though of course.

Hey, when the Pens open the season vs Ottawa in Stockholm, they are game 2 of a Vs. doubleheader; game one is Tampa Bay v. NYR from Prague; that'll be a fun 5 hours of hockey to watch. Game 1: Pens South, Game 2: Pens North.
I'm too tired right now to read the article and figure out the exact procedure but I think I scrubbed into one of these on my ortho rotation. I'll check my notes and see if I can glean any random pointless facts to share.
My question is why did he opt for this surgery now, and not in, say June?! You know, when he might have had a chance to be back before the start of the season.
Ah well. If it leads to Whit having a longer and more productive career, so much the better.
@Pops Freshenmeyer: Sounds like he didn't want surgery but was forced into it because it was necessary. The article said he consulted 3 orthopedic specialists about it, so I'm thinking he wanted to know if he could opt not to get the surgery. Otherwise, I don't know, but he obviously doesn't want to miss any time off from playing even with this surgery.

this news makes Whitney's Game 5, 50+ minute performance that much more impressive.
Tanger ran the "Whit" play a few times. That would be a good choice for the second PP unit to use seeing they don't score goals.
P.S. I had nightmares about the AO video last night.
