August strikes, Whitney sidelined

When the Penguins hit the ice in a couple months across the pond, don't expect to see Ryan Whitney on the bench. He's undergone a procedure to align his foot that will sideline him for 3 months minimum.

According to the [ Trib ] Shero and HCMT "were stunned" by the news.

We'll save you the mental math. The earliest he's back is a couple weeks into the season. But he could be out as long as until January.

Apparently it's something he suffered with since the 07 postseason and they've finally resorted to surgery.

We're no doctors, so osteotomy means nothing to us. But if google images and our ignorance can be trusted, it involves screwing a couple drywall screws into someones heel.

Whitney's feet were bound by Chinese Gymnasts.

are you kidding? those girls arent old enough to know how to bind anything.

That's what they want you to think.

Whitney is the next Randy Carlyle...

Either that or we're making too big of a deal out of this. I really don't think Whitney will be much better when he comes back. If he's as good as he was two years ago I'd be a little surprised. I'm a downer I guess but I never really cared for him from the time we drafted him.

Me = Lame.

from wiki:
An osteotomy is a surgical operation whereby a bone is cut to shorten, lengthen, or change its alignment.

Ive had more than my share of ankle/foot surgeries including a procedure similar to an osteotomy. If he can really be back in 3-5 thats great but I would be shocked if he's back before the new year. these types of things are a bitch to heal from.

Dark side - Whitney is the jersey I bought my Mom...

Bright side - I'm glad it wasn't a Malone jersey I bought.

Regardless, hopefully he can be better than ever when he does return.

Free Candy will help nurse him back to health; and I hope they have a good medical plan.

Oh, and a thought from the last post about AO vs. Steve....I think it would be nice if the Captain actually let his hair down once in a while. Yeah, he might get blasted; but it happens to everyone in the public eye and you deal with it.

Dear Steve,

Please to be showing us that you a little bit of that personality we have seen only a few times, but hope you still have! M'kay?

Much love, Chica

PS...ask Maxie for advice; he's doing just fine in the personality dept.

Ouch. Hopefully we'll get to see Gogo get some valuable time this year in the NHL. I wonder if LeGame is going to eat up big minutes on the #1 PP now.

Who will run the Whitneyplay™ now?

feet issues-SUCK! its amazing how one thing on your foot can affect so much.

and since i didn't get to chime in earlier on AO's interesting video, if he doesn't want someone who's only interested in him because of his money, why talk so openly about it? and plus, talk about creepy!

Here's to LeTwine getting big minutes on the 1st PP unit!

Canada broke their 0-for-Olympics today - a gold in women's wrestling and a silver in rowing. Figured I'd mention it since I saw it mentioned in posts earlier.

Hey, this is disappointing, but it's good that he's getting it taken care of before the season starts. If the Pens were playing well for the first couple games of the season and THEN we heard about this, we'd be pretty pissed. . .

jefe penguino said...

too bad for whits, but at least its some sort of pens news.

another guy that will be competing for some ice time is danny richmond. he's got some offensive talents as a defenseman and some nhl games under his belt. if gogo is not ready and sydor isn't getting the job done, look for richmond to get some ice time... he's gotta earn it first though of course.

M. Vanderlasser said...

Uh oh, I hope Whitney doesn't end up like Barbaro.

:(

Hey, when the Pens open the season vs Ottawa in Stockholm, they are game 2 of a Vs. doubleheader; game one is Tampa Bay v. NYR from Prague; that'll be a fun 5 hours of hockey to watch. Game 1: Pens South, Game 2: Pens North.

I'm too tired right now to read the article and figure out the exact procedure but I think I scrubbed into one of these on my ortho rotation. I'll check my notes and see if I can glean any random pointless facts to share.

Pops Freshenmeyer said...

My question is why did he opt for this surgery now, and not in, say June?! You know, when he might have had a chance to be back before the start of the season.

Ah well. If it leads to Whit having a longer and more productive career, so much the better.

I Have Kasparaitis said...

@Pops Freshenmeyer: Sounds like he didn't want surgery but was forced into it because it was necessary. The article said he consulted 3 orthopedic specialists about it, so I'm thinking he wanted to know if he could opt not to get the surgery. Otherwise, I don't know, but he obviously doesn't want to miss any time off from playing even with this surgery.

osteotomy=bone cutting=extreme pain

"The recovery can be long and very painful, and requires extensive physical therapy and rehabilitation. A cast or splint will be worn for approximately four to eight weeks.

I looked up osteotomy regarding the foot ( most atricles i seen talked about the knee)

You know of course, Whitney's injury is all a ruse by Buries it so that he doesn't have to trade him to KC, right?

You people are so gullible.

Maybe since Whit has taken the fall, then the universe will balance out and Eaton will stay healthy all season.

wow.. that's some hardcore stuff right there. i stopped lookin stuff up because i was gettin' woozy...

I'll bet Sydor stays as 7th d, as they'll bring Gogo up for the pre-season and he'll impress.

I hope GoGo impresses. I'm already itchin' to make some Go Go Gadget photoshops.

"Who will run the Whitneyplay™ now?"

No one was running the Whitneyplay last year when Whitney was playing.

vezonex said...

this news makes Whitney's Game 5, 50+ minute performance that much more impressive.

TheFandangler said...

Tanger ran the "Whit" play a few times. That would be a good choice for the second PP unit to use seeing they don't score goals.
