We Can Move On With Our Lives

[ LetsGoPens.com ] comes through big-time with the story.

Jagr signs with Omsk in Russia. [ Link to team website that is poop ]
The soap opera is over.

He is already on the team's Wikipedia roster. [ Woo ]

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The NY Post also had some quotes from Jagr's departure. [ Here ]

"I'm disappointed that I'm not going to be in New York, but I've always believed in my life that things happen for a reason, and that's how I look at this," Jagr told The Post last night. "Coming to the Rangers was great for me, and I owe Glen thanks for making the trade with Washington [on Jan. 23, 2004] to bring me here.

"I can't say I regret anything that happened here. We didn't win the Stanley Cup, but there's a lot of luck that goes into that, too, even if you have a great team. Well, I guess I regret that I didn't get 84 points this season. If that had happened, I'd still be here."

"With the contracts for Scotty, Dru and Hank [Henrik Lundqvist], and then signing [Wade] Redden, they have almost $30M in four players, so there wasn't enough for me after that," Jagr said. "The Rangers wanted to get better on defense and they spent a lot of money on Redden.

"That's OK. That's what they thought would make them a better team. If I did a better job with Scotty or Dru, it might be different."

"People think that it's better to have a lot of choices, but sometimes having one choice is best because you can't make the wrong one," Jagr said. "I don't know what I'm going to do now, but I'll make that choice when it's time.

"I want to thank Glen and Tom and the Rangers. I want to thank all the people who supported me. Being in New York was special.

"And I also want to say to the people like Mike Milbury who made their living by criticizing me all the time, that they can kiss my [butt]."

Go Pens.

Hear it from Naslund himself: "Cup contender" – that's right!

That's why Hossa left, Naslund went to the Rangers and Jagr to Russia.

Good luck with Satan and Fedotenko. Must feel great replacing the pinnacle of the league with two has-beens.

Lol, Rangers a cup contender.

New York continues to think they can just buy a championship. Even the Evil Empire has had a rough spell in terms of championships (for baseball anyway, but who cares about that).

New York=More of a cup Contender then Pittsburgh? Hysterical.

Just go down the middle.

Drury, Gomez, Dubinsky vs. Crosby, Malkin, Staal?

You don't even need to GLANCE at anything else.

So...now what?

Can the Pens WIN THE CUP with the team they have now?

I understand they were in first place with Recchi and Armstrong on Sid's line, but they never would've made it as far as they did with that #1 line intact.

So can they win the Cup with the team they have now? And if not, who can they sign that could take the team to that level?

strakasguitar said...

no confirmation - yet - about this anywhere else, folks. figured I'd check the BBC's website (being that they tend toward better coverage of overseas news than we Yanks), but their top NHL story is still the Melrose hiring.

However, Sir Straka denied playing in the CR at first, as well...

time will tell

id say now you hope satan and fedotenko work out, and probably bring in another agitator.

but with giving those two one year deals, you open yourself up to being a good candidate for bringing in a big free agent winger next season and hope one person from WBS develops into legit winger.

Translation of the Jagr article:

July 4th - GM HK Avangard Omsk (Omsk Vanguard) Anatoly Bardin signed a two year contract with an option for a third with one of the most productive NHL forwards, Jaromir Jagr. Kontinental Hockey League President Alexander Mededvev praised the signing of the contract with Omsk and the world's hockey star Jagr. In the near future, there was be a complete press release. In the 2004/05 season, Jaromir played for the Omsk Vanguard and helped the club win the European Champions Cup, defeating Karpat Oulu of the Finnish League.

The famous forward spent the last three seasons with the New York Rangers, in which he played 269 matches and scored 317 (119 + 198) points.

@ ck

I don't think you're being very realistic, no matter what answer you give. Every season is made up of so many intangible factors, so many little ups and downs and swings in momentum, that even a group of overachieving youngsters (like ourselves last season, not counting g-rob and sarge, etc.) could contend for the Cup underneath the right circumstances.

We've still got a boatload of talent. There is no team in the league deeper down the middle than we are - Tampa Bay comes close with the Stamkos pickup, but not very. This is the first season in a LONG time where we're not facing the prospect of a Nasreddine or *shudder* a Melichar in our staring six defensemen. Sure, we lost a few fellas - the contributions of Malone and Roberts, two alternate captains, will especially be missed - but it's not as if Malone played to Crosby-esque heights all damn year, and WWGRD was sidelined for the last half of the season.

I'd say we look pretty damn good as of right now. Hail Satan and Fedotenko will find new life playing alongside our boys, and sHero will keep his eyes peeled for the right time to bring in a Jason Williams or a Gaborik into town.

*endrant*

Anthony said...

@erik(1st comment he made)

The point of those signings was to replace hosea and Malone. All that Crosby and Malkin need are wingers to put the puck in the net...Especially with Crosby, the wingers he's played with have score . They put the puck in a position where they're wingers should score.

All they need is two bodies with sticks that can put the puck in the net when Crosby and malkin say so.

PG(Dave Molinari, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) says Jagr "reportedly" signs with Russian team.

akus said...

By Dave Molinari, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Jaromir Jagr's career in the NHL apparently is over.

A Russian team, Avangard Omsk, announced on its Web site that Jagr has agreed to a multi-year contract to play there.

The signing, which apparently covers two seasons and an option, could not be immediately confirmed.

Jagr, an unrestricted free agent who spent his first 11 seasons in North America with the Penguins, was informed by the New York Rangers Wednesday that he would not be re-signed.

Jagr, a member of the Penguins' Stanley Cup-winning teams in 1991 and 1992, played in Omsk during the lockout that wiped out the 2004-05 NHL season, and had a long-standing offer to return there.

Jagr had 646 goals and 953 assists in 1,273 regular-season NHL games.

JYo said...

Happy Fourth everyone! Thanks again to BNG and the rest of you who have served our country!

Back to hockey...

you open yourself up to being a good candidate for bringing in a big free agent winger next season

...or at the trade deadline.

I know there is the possibility that signing older or second tier wings tuns out like a Palffy deal, but how many people thought Syko would do what he did when sHero brought him aboard? These guys will almost certainly do better with Sid and Geno than they did the last year or two without them.

Again, with 3 stud centers, very solid D, and a young franchise goalie, the Pens have as good a shot as anyone at the Cup.

I would not be opposed to finishing every post the rest of the offseason with Hossa's quote. That is more motivating than any picture you guys can post. It best be hanging in the locker room somewhere.

Pooch said...

TSN and other sites still maintaining radio silence over this.

Even if its true that he did sign, it doesnt necessarily mean its over for him in the NHL. Most NHL players these days who sign a contract with a Russian or European team work an "out" clause into there--meaning if they get an offer from an NHL team that they like, they're free to go. Sometimes players dont even step foot on foreign soil before utilizing the out clause. I would assume that Jagr and his agent ensured that he had an out clause.

So, keep your double-J dreams in the back of your mind (if that's what you want for the team). Personally, I dont really care what he does, and the further he is from our locker room the less chance that he's going to mess it up.

The Penguins Experience said...

TSN is now citing the same report.

JYo said...

It seems there are enough RWs around now anyway and Jagr's salary would probably be too high unless a couple guys are dumped and he takes a significant pay cut. I still wouldn't mind having him around, but really, a guy like Shanny might be better. I'm not a huge fan of his, but if park a big body like his in front of the net while Sid and Satan throw the puck on net, it could be a pretty scary top line. I don't know what Shanny would cost, but he might be a nice addition at this point. He is also one of these "Cup winners" that everyone seems to get excited about.

Stoosh said...

@ Erik -

Same tired old responses. Blah, blah, blah.

We don't need Markus Fucking Naslund and Marian Hossa to come out and say we're Cup contenders. I love the guy, but what the fuck would Markus Naslund know about being a Cup contender? When was the last time he played on one?

We just played in the Cup Finals and the entire core of that team - save a few parts that will prove mostly interchangeable - is coming back.

You see, that's what you get when a team makes it to the Cup Finals then returns two elite centers like Crosby and Malkin, a third-line center like Staal, a franchise-goaltender who outplayed that Vezina-finalist joke of a goaltender in the semifinals, and, um...the entire defensive corps...the one responsible for the Pens finishing 10th in goals against last year.

What do the Rangers have to build around? Lundqvist, I guess...who we smoked to the tune of 15 goals in five playoff games. Drury's great and all, so you've got that going for you. But Gomez is a glorified checking line center getting franchise-caliber money. You'd think Sather would've learned with Bobby Holik, but apparently not.

And if it was possible for the Rags defense to be any butter-on-a-hot-summer-day softer than it was last year, Sather managed to do it. He traded your best all-around defenseman in Tyutin to Columbus for Zherdev - a player known only for being a disappointment. He brought in Dmitri Kalinin, who most Sabres fans would've gladly driven to Manhattan just to get him the fuck out of Buffalo.

Then he went out and invested all that money in Redden and Rozsival. I can't wait to see the Pens push Redden all over the ice like we did in the Ottawa series. Has any defenseman gone from All-Star to "suck" faster than Redden? And watching Roszival gag the puck up time and time again will remind all of us Penguins fans why we let his ass go in the first place. He MIGHT crack our third defensive pairing. Might. My guess is he'd be our seventh defenseman. Good luck with that.

Docciavelli said...

I hope Flyer Hater took his Prozac this morning--he was pretty juiced up by BuzzTurd on JJ coming to Pittsburgh.

I think we need to put this all in perspective:

Did we really lose out on anything?

In Jagr, we lost out on an aging 35-year-old who (a) doesn't backcheck and (b) would've required us to commit to two years (i.e., dipping into Show-Staal-The-Money money next year). Is that worth $6 million each? Not when we can use it towards MAF and Staal.

In Naslund, we lost out on a guy who hasn't had a real scoring knack since Bertuzzi could still play piano and Brandan Morrison could still pass the puck. He's also softer than brie between crackers.

JYO is dead-on here. The trade deadline in '09 looms large, and Pittsburgh's in a good place for it. Gaborik will be 2009's "Marian-for-rent" with the Wild likely out of the playoff hunt. Not to mention the Sedin twins and Steve Sullivan (who both play for teams that won't make the dance next year).

Who knows, maybe Tank gels with Malkin and Sykora and becomes the 26-goal scorer he once was (not holding my breath). Maybe Satan finds the form he had when he had a decent puck-moving pivot with him (and Yashin wasn't half the playmaker Bing is). Maybe someone [Caputi?] cracks the lineup out of WBS and replaces Malone, allowing Tank to play with Staal.

I'm not sweating it. The Core(tm) is intact. And we're not selling "dreams and happiness" and other stuff even Charlie thinks is too gay to market--we're marketing a team that's a bona fide contender for for the next 5 years. How many teams can say that?

Boyle to san jose

Sources tell TSN that Tampa Bay Lightning defenceman Dan Boyle has waived his no-trade clause and has agreed to a trade to the San Jose Sharks.

The paper work confirming Boyle has consented is being processed right now and once signed by Boyle, it will clear the way for the Sharks and Lightning to complete the deal.

In return for the 31 year old veteran defenseman, its believed Tampa will receive a package that will include 23 old defenseman Matt Carle, a 1st round pick, a prospect and a 4th round pick.

Sources say defenseman Brad Lukowich is also part of the deal going to San Jose.

Wow, that's quite a video.

Does the refrain say something about "I'm gonna f*ck you up?"

JP has some excellent goal celebration skillz.

On a unrelated note,

"Christopher Monfette has scripted an adaptation of Clive Barker's short-story Down, Satan!, one of Barker's infamous Books of Blood stories. Down, Satan!, one of the shortest stories, relates the tale of a wealthy middle-aged businessman, Gregorius, who becomes depressed when he believes God(ard) has deserted him, and he comes up with a plan to build a Hell on Earth in order to summon Satan, believing that God(ard) will then sweep him (Gregorius) out of Satan's clutches and into His heavenly fold."

What about trading for Marty Havlat? Chicago is looking to dump salary to get under the cap and he seems like a sure 40 goal man playing with Sid if he can stay healthy.

sirimanni said...

i was just thinking, what happened to Chad Herman blog?

jefe penguino said...

juliet lee only won the contest in pittsburgh because i wasnt there.

J.S. said...

The Penguins' efforts to flesh out their roster have stretched to the far side of the Atlantic. They are trying to sign free-agent left winger Janne Pesonen, a 26-year-old Finn. He has been offered a contract, and the Penguins hope to learn later today or tomorrow whether he will accept it. Pesonen is believed to be considering offers from teams in Russia and Switzerland, as well.

from sportsnet via Post Gazette.

J.S., if we trade Sydor there's enough room. The kid has tons of talent and you can probably re-sign him in the 3.5-4 million range next year.

Maria said...

Sigh. I knew getting JJ was a long shot but it still hurts.

But...now what? Fedotenko and Satan aren't very good replacemets for Malone and Hossa. Are we contenders again next season? I'm almost panicking.

jefe penguino said...

congrats chestnut!

sirimanni said...

koby looks like he's still not that phased and would go out and grab a burger after this while chestnut looks like he's just gonna go lie down in a coffin

jefe penguino said...

@FH -you only WISH milano was in a hot dog eating contest.

This is LGP's number one prospect.

their dumps must be like 15 Courics ("One Katie Couric is approximately 2.6 pounds of excrement.")

Flyer Hater said...

You know one thing that people aren't banking on when it comes to making up production for the losses of the two immortals is more goals from Staal, Malkin, and Crosby. You know at some point Crosby is going to be a 50 goal scorer, Malkin has the potential to be a 60 goal scorer and Staal has the potential to be a 30 goal scorer. Not to mention a guy like Sykora who can be a 40 goal guy when playing with Malkin all year and not exiled on the 3rd line for a few months.

J.S. said...

that's a big if on Sydor though, especially if the talk is true that Shero has been trying to move Sydor before the draft.

J.S. said...

Yes, an encore presentation of the contest. Not for me though. Gotta hook the surround sound back up. If I don't do it today, it's never gonna get done.

jefe penguino said...

i think the tank and satan are really going to step it up this year being they are only on one year contracts. they need to prove they wanna stay and/or still be paid in the future.

"he wanted it, but i needed it" -chestnut

well, on that note, im going to go make lunch. you guessed it. hot dogs.

floridapens said...

satan=30 goals this year easy
so kennedy and dupuis gotta step it up,and they will

pens=best in the east

Flyer Hater said...

Jefe, I love the fact that Satan called Shero and said that he had to play here. Satan can score 40.

Brett said...

Since my last name is Williams, I'll push for him too :-p

My god, someone mentioned snagging Gaborik at the trade deadline. I would wear all the pants I own at once and then ruin all of them in excitement.

Jags talkin shit on milbury? Hilarious!

Dan said...

fh - i'm not sure crosby ever will be a goal scorer like that because of this reason: his stick. he has no curve which is for passing (we all know that) but that severely limits wrist shots with a stick like that. if it wasn't for that, he would've already had 50 goals in a season imo

Dan, you really think Sid can not score goals because of his stick? Or did I miss your sarcasm?

Dan said...

if you can eat that many hooters wings more power to you. those things are so overcooked.

damn that girl in the rosettastone commercial is hot

Dan said...

colin - yes/no. obviously he can score, i'm trying to say it would be easier for him to score more with more of a curve on his blade.

Dr. Turkleton said...

Wayne Gretzky played with a 'flat blade'....maybe some of you have heard of him?

Wiki page

My sources say he scored a lot of goals along with his gazillion assists.

floridapens said...

dan,i think sid has this hockey thing figured out.

jefe penguino said...

sid COULD score +/-50 IF he shoots instead of passing it to dupuis. no offense to dupuis.

Dr. Turkleton said...

this dude on Comedy Central™, making me laugh, looks like the kid from Two and a Half Men in about 20 years.

LargeTurkey said...

Janne Pesonen!!!!!!!! I hear he is the next Ovechkin!

floridapens said...

@jefe ha ha ,you mean no offense for dupuis.

Flyer Hater said...

I think Sid should play with the Marty McSorley curve.

Colin said...

Are you suggesting that if he had more curve to his blade he would be able to shoot higher and / or harder?

Colin said...

Sid could score 50 with a right handed Sherwood 5030 "Coffey" pattern.

rickyaustin said...

I hear Pesonen signed a three way contract with the Pirates, Penguins and Steelers.

jefe penguino said...

12 and half slices of pizza in 15 minutes doesnt sound that tough. ill be there next year.

Sid needs to throw the puck in the net more like malkin.
