Save Gary Bettman, Save The World

Summer is slower than Mark Recchi.

Thankfully, [Puck Daddy] is holding a photoshop contest that could help pass at least a day or two.

Here is the premise:

Puck Daddy, aka Greg Wyshynski, thinks Gary Bettman needs to be portrayed as a hero
to maybe change his image.

Before you log off your computer, listen.

Bettman has been very good to the Penguins fanbase.
Bottom line, he is a reason they are still in town.

Don't think so?
Ask Seattle how David Stern helped them.
Joke.

But whatev, this isn't about factual shit, because Bettman has made some errors.
It is about having some fun.

The job, if you choose to accept it, is to make conceptual photoshops of Bettman as a hero.
Maybe as a cop arresting a criminal, or maybe him slaying a dragon.

Here are some examples:

The photos will all be featured on Greg's blog on Yahoo.
It will be a nice chance to show the world how we roll.

You can win some stuff too or whatev.

E-mail all photoshops to:

puckdaddyblog@yahoo.com
puckdaddyblog@yahoo.com
puckdaddyblog@yahoo.com

Do it.

Some rapper.
Solid hat.

Thanks to [Kory L]

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

[TampaBayR.png]

Looks like the Lightning need to start worrying more about their sales...
and less about signing all the Penguins:

[Double A]

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

There is nothing to talk about.
Things are bad.

But, they aren't as bad as Rick Mahorn's life is about to be.

He pushed Lisa Leslie in some brawl in Detroit.
This will be the only time you will ever see a WNBA highlight from us.
But just listen to the crowd's reaction.

Oh boy.
Does Osgood play for the Shock now?

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Game #29
Top 5 Game of the season

[What It's All About. PENS WIN.]

2 - 1
SHOOTOUT

On this 82-game journey we all embark on, every so often we get to witness some special things.
Tonight, as hockey fans, was one of those instances.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The next time a Penguin broke wind, they would get a penalty.
Talbot goes to the box.
Crosby then decides to draw another penalty.

ater, Luongo went into Sykora's house and robbed him.

What a goaltender.

FSN shows Pens backup goalie Ty Conklin on the bench.
He looks like he just finished off a Budweiser.

Just when you thought Luongo was going to shut everyone out for the rest of his life, Malkin and Sykora team up and get one past Loooooooooooooooo.

That's a gooooooaaaaaaaaaaaallllllll.
1-0.

Malkin's pass is why he is a huge deal.

:::::::
OT

The overtime was just doing its own thing until Sid Crosby comes out of nowhere on a breakaway.
He gets tripped up, and the shootout starts early as Sid gets a penalty shot.

You couldn't make this up.

Crosby vs. Luongo. Two of the best at what they do.
Sidney on his Western Canada trip. TNT could have run a miniseries on it.
And odds are stations all over Canada broke into their respective shows to bring viewers this penalty shot.

Lord Therrien calls a timeout to ice Luongo and give Sid a breather.

Here we go.
All of Canada watching.
Pens Nation on their feet.
Sick.

Sid turns Luongo into a woman, but just couldn't lift the puck over Luongo.
What a player. What a goaltender.

An insane end to the OT brings us to another shootout.

..........................................................

SHOOTOUT

Vancouver up first.

Sabu makes a huge save.

Christensen says Luongo means nothing to him. 1-0.

Jim Morrisson up for the Canucks.

Sabu says no.

Pens up. Syko can't beat Loo.

The crowd starts to roar.
Trevor Linden = Mr. Clutch. 1-1

Sid vs Loo, Round 2.
No dice. Sid is stopped again.

Some dude for Vancouver comes down.

Post, or is that the Linden goal?
We don't know. These pics are nasty, though.

Ruutu could stun the nation, tries to make a move, but not today.

The ghost of Craig Patrick steps in.

Sabu poke check. Sick.

Malkin contemplates his life, but Luongo says no.

One of the Olsen Twins comes up.

Not today

And look who comes out with the chance to win it...

Kris LeGAME

Unreal.

Go Pens

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

[Michael W]

"Pittsburgh has a great team, great people, great organization. I had to compare the two teams, and there's a little better chance to win the Cup in Detroit. I had a great time with Sid and playing on the power play with Geno [Evgeni Malkin], but the team in Detroit is something special. I know it's a short term, but we never talked about a one-year [deal] with Pittsburgh. We just talked about a long-term deal. I totally believe Detroit has the kind of team that can win it again."

No wait. NFG announced 50% hike in heating this winter....maybe we need more warming?? Crap and criminy, might as well retire and head south, that's where all the pens are going anyway.

Thanks for the recaps, that west coast run was something. My favorite was sid showing off at Wayne's house. Was he pissed or what?

Professional basketball fight in Detroit? Who woulda thunk it!?

One of my favorite/most aggravating things to watch is what scared idiots do when contemplating jumping in on a brawl.

You know the thing I'm talking about.

Jumping up and down making "Oh no they did NOT just do that" face.

Which is always followed by the obligatory "Oooooh ho ho ho! Uhn uh. Oooh they don't want to see me." (etc. etc.)

If you watch that WBNA clip again you can see (I think) Lisa Leslie doing it back on the bench.

Give me #14 in white any day.

Right when the group of people starts to get into it she just goes and tackles the first person she sees.

I just came across this, and I liked it. Has anyone seen it before? I wish I could tell you I made it up, but sadly that is not the case.

Anyway, wanted to share:
I’m from PITTSBURGH. I live by a crick not a creek. It’s a jagger bush, not a thorn bush. I sweep instead of vacuum. Its gum bands not rubberbands. We drink pop not soda or cola. I emphasize my O's and that’s normal. When I walk into a room, I ask what yinz are doin. We invented Heinz ketchup, Klondike’s, and the great Primantis sandwhich. For fun we can go Dahntan or hit up Sahside. We hate New England, Baltimore, Cleveland, and Neil O'Donnell. I am not from the Midwest nor the southwest. Screw Philly and screw Cleveland. I'm from the 'Burgh. We have put out the best quarterbacks in the NFL, and also Subway's Jared. I can name all 3 rivers. I've sat at the point and watched the three rivers collide. I eat hoagies not subs. I shop at Giant Igle. I do the worsh not the laundry. I wear tennis shoes not sneakers. I eat at Eatn'Park. I have taken the incline. We constantly refer to Pennsylvania as Pee-Ay. We know several people who have hit a deer more than once. We immediately check our fly when told that "Kennywood's open." We knew what a jagoff was before Dennis Miller made the term mainstream. The only good thing in Latrobe is the Stiller’s Training Camp. I own a terrible towel and I don't care about the NBA. We bleed black and gold cause we love our Stiller’s, Bucco's, and Guin’s!

I finalized my 11-game Capitals package this morning. Section 417 for all 11 games.

First up, Luongo and the Canucks on October 13.

It's going to be a long wait until the two Penguins games -- they're games 8 and 9 in the queue.

Going to be a good hockey season. October can't get here soon enough.

Original Nathan said...

Have to give Bettman credit for learning from his mistake of letting the Whalers and the Jets move to horrible hockey markets. Seriously, how long would it take for a team in Kansas City, Houston, or Vegas to be playing in front of half-empty arenas? He recognized that the league had a solid market in Pittsburgh and rather than throwing in the towel when Buries It declared an impasse in the arena negotiations, he waded in and helped get the deal done.

Penguins fans really do owe Bettman a debt of gratitude for his work keeping the Pens in place.

Flyer Hater said...

Nathan, Hartford and Winnipeg didn't have Sidney Crosby either. Hartford and Winnipeg aren't nearly the hockey markets that Western Pennsylvania is (it's probably top 5 in the states).

I think the NHL needed Pittsburgh more than Pittsburgh needed the NHL.

brndlynn said...

@ fh: i def agree that the nhl needed the pens to stay in pgh. what would it have looked like if the team who had won the "crosby sweepstakes" let the team move to a new city? would have looked horrible for the league.

brndlynn said...

offtopic but...
im bored and watching the Pens Free Agency report on OnDemand and Bob Grove called TB Pittsburgh South. good times.

Original Nathan said...

Hartford was in a tough spot: an artificially-created major-league market stuck between two of the most established NHL markets in the United States. The Rangers may not have been anything special in the 1970s or 80s, save for that Finals run in 1979, but the Bruins were really solid, despite falling short of the Cup.

The Whalers just couldn't get past the Habs and the B's in the Adams Division. You'd have to wonder if the playoffs were structured like they are now if the Whale would've done any better.

Original Nathan said...

The Wolf Pack does pretty well, though. I think plans are afoot to tear down the mall around the Civic Center, but leave the arena in place. Solid AHL city, and that's probably all they really should be.

Hartford would've probably been the only relocation destination that wouldn't have made me a Sabres fan.

Flyer Hater said...

Nathan, Hartford and Winnipeg were both in tough spots during the 80s. They both made the playoffs almost every year but they each ran into the same team every year and got bounced. Winnipeg would get smoked by the Oilers in the Smythe semi-final or Final and the Whalers would get smoked by the Habs in the Adams semi-final or Final..

Bullshit rap is tough. I wrote a rap where Jaromir Jagr and his new pal Ken Klee scored goals down in DC and got their checks from George McPhee. Its simple, and the content can be just as good. The Pgh media:

"Jaromir this and Jaromir that/What you think now that Jaromir playing for Caps?"

There was also a verse where he buys the minor league team Andrew Ference is on just to make him do burpees all day. It was pretty funny.

I suppose Snell's only saving grace today is that Brian Moehler sucks just as much. Back-to-back doubles from LaRoche (it's July, time to play like I belong in the bigs) and Mientkiewicz, and it's 6-4.

This game's going to end up something like 15-12 if either starter makes it to the 5th.

Original Nathan said...

Murray had some really good seasons playing with Joe Thornton. Although claiming him off waivers would require the Pens to pay his entire salary. Better to wait until the B's either put him on re-entry waivers or buy him out.

Flyer Hater said...

Glen Murray>>>Pascal Dupuis

Imagine if we would get Murray and Satan in the same offseason. That would guarantee a 10-0 record against the Bruins and Islanders this year.

Max Power said...

Murray's just not worth the money. I think that we are beyond comfortably set going in to this season. The only changes left to be made can't happen until they hit the ice and HCMT gets to see what kind of chemistry he has going on in the lab.

Flyer Hater said...

I just don't see the hurt that can be done for potentially signing a 30 goal scorer to a contract worth about 1.75.

Raybin said...

Glen Murray>>>Pascal Dupuis

More importantly:

Glen Murray >>>>> Tyler Kennedy

Dupuis - Staal - Murray

Sick third line.

Nathan's right though, wait until re-rentry waivers or buyout. Otherwise he comes at a cool 4.15 mil, which is way too much.

Original Nathan said...

Any GM who'd pay Murray more than $2 million in a one-year deal is an idiot. Murray is getting older, and he had major injury issues last season. A $1.75 million, one-year flier on guy who can finish with the best of them when he's playing with a top setup man isn't a horrible idea, but a long-term deal or shelling out more than $2 million for a player who may or may not give you 40 games next season is sheer idiocy.

brndlynn said...

@ max: everytime i see a post from you i want a donut. haha.

i think Shero said in an interview a week or so ago that he was pretty much done for this off season. he's also mentioned a few times that he wanted to leave a little bit of room under the cap for a trade later in the season if necessary.

Original Nathan said...

So I'm guessing that after the buyout goes through, the Islanders or Thrashers will sign him to a 3 year, $10 million deal.

Maria said...

Dupuis - Staal - Murray

That would be awesome, but I can't see it happening. Shero seems like he's comfortable with how the team is looking right now, so I would think he wants to keep some cap space free instead of possibly overpaying for Murray.

Who knows, though. I'm down with whatever Shero decides to do.

and as for the real answer behind the rappers wearing pitts gear, its not cause they're smart, its most likely their local gang colors. the vice lords commonly wear black & gold and pirate's hats cause the P to them refers to "people's nation" (just like some bloods wear dale jr gear from his bud days cause the b=bloods in red with no blue). that's not to say every person you see is part of the VL, black & gold are also the colors of the LBC Rollin' 20s and the Latin Kings. usually you needs more identifying marks such as tats or bandanas to know for sure.

finally speaking of the pirates, 6-6 in the 7th

You know, the Pirates were actually good for three years there in the early 90s. I'm sure plenty of people bought their stuff from 1990-92.

Man, what would it be like to have every pro team associated with your city at the very least playoff worthy, if not bona fide contenders? I suppose we can ask Boston, since all four of their teams made the playoffs in the last calendar year, with two of them winning titles and a third coming up hilariously short in the championship game.

lol maria, i watch a bit too much of gangland on the history channel. of course i almost did get in trouble in middle school for wearing a red shirt on picture day, then the officials realized i was a geek, not a gang member.

Yates is trying to blow it now. Priceless.

The Pirates are on their knees, blowin' the game.

So I'm guessing that after the buyout goes through, the Islanders or Thrashers will sign him to a 3 year, $10 million deal.

Hah! Undoubtedly.

I wish I could make a Kevin Lowe joke here, but no offer sheets are involved.

@maria

You're right for sure. Shero wants the wiggle room under the cap. Or at least that's what he's said. Signing Murray is about a 10,000-1 shot. But it's still something to talk about that isn't the Pirates, which is what's really important. :)

jefe penguino said...

spoiler alert!

the bucs arent making the playoffs.

off to tDK now.

Original Nathan said...

Somehow Texas coughed up a late 8-5 lead to lose 10-8 to the White Sox. Think of how scary good that team would be if they didn't have a worse pitching staff than the Bucs'.

Original Nathan said...

Somehow Grabow got out of the 8th with the lead intact. Miracles happen every fucking day.

With this monumental win, the Pirates are that much closer to achieving their ultimate goal of mediocrity.

I miss Madden on the air, on jobber days like this you could always count on him ripping the Pirates or ripping Colony, or anything else.

FH: I agree with you, dude...

I was driving home from work today and was thinking the same thing. Listening to 970 stinks; i don't mind joe bendel, but he's...just...not...i don't like listening to him.

Whoever is on ESPN usually eats balls. I know Staff and others have confessed to liking him, but i really do not enjoy Chris Mack at all. He comes off as pretentious. Ken Laird is quickly working his way up to Chris Mack status, too.

Whoever was on today at 3 had some PItt football coach on. SNORE.

Thank God for the iPod.

Flyer Hater said...

Stokes:

Chris Mack has the horrible trait of not having a comedic bone in his body and yet he thinks he's Don Rickles.

Ken Laird is oblivious to his own moronic ramblings. The whole, I want to be the contrarian act gets old quick when performed by a hack. I swear, he'd deny the holocaust just to be "edgy"

The best dude they can get on there is Jim Colony because he has good wit, speaks well, and has knowledge of all sports in this town.

However, this is all a precursor to the glorious return of Mark Madden to the airwaves.

Hard being me, I'm busy like a monkey on a tree, hard being me, MMMMMMMMMMMM YEAH!

stokes said...

FH:

I actually DO like Colony. He's not an asswipe, he talks sports without self-importance and i honestly think that he just speaks his opinion regardless of what it is, whether its humorous or controversial...

I actually DO like Madden as well. I used to really dislike him, but i listened to him the most this past year purely based on his hockey knowledge. Of course, as these things happen, i started to like him and miss his show, as does ESPN i'm sure. But i did hate that song, because those lyrics are just cheesy. Straight up.

They should move that completely unfunny, never-should-have-been-hired-after-DVE-let-him-go, Eddie Crow to the Madden slot.

uh, yeah, that's a joke(like Crow himself).

smitty said...

Mack & Laird = TURDS

Flyer Hater said...

I would suggest that Guy Junker fill Madden's spot but a daily reading of the encyclopedia would be more exciting. Someone forgot to tell Junker that you actually have to maintain an opinion on the radio.

Flyer Hater said...

Update: Summer Still Sucks

I don't really have an informed opinion about Junker.

Its not the summer that sucks, its that there's no hockey. Why don't they play year 'round?

Glad to know its not only me.

IHK, i have NOT seen TDK as yet, within the next few days i hope to IMAX it :)

12 hour work days suck worse than the Bucco's

OK, I tried.

On a related note, my company hit me with the old firewall bazooka again. No Pensblogging for me at work, at least for the time being, so I guess I have to be at least a little bit productive now. This is like the third or fourth time this has happened in the last four months, and it's usually lifted after a day or two, so we'll see.

I'm totally rubbing it in.

Alas, though, I will get the opportunity to punch many a Red Wings fan in the face.

@stoosh, Awe, c'mon man, you won't be attending redneck bootcamp? Not even for the spandex-clad hookers french kissing each other for Benny's attention?

I Have Kasparaitis said...

Steelers training camp is actually fun ... well, I thought it was but whatev. I keep my attention on the defense working and try to keep my eyes on Hines Ward, sometimes I'll watch Jeff Read because he's amusing ... I doubt I'll be going this year *frowns*

Maria said...

I wouldn't mind training camp if it weren't for the exodus of white trash that migrates there every year. I liked going and watching the team, but the crowd just became too much to handle.

Wow, I was surprised to NOT see a "next" link there. Not even a "turn the page" yet. Hmm. I'm going to help w/ that.

Anyone talk about Crosby getting the ESPY? Saw some of the highlights of the show on youtube, but no footage of him or the award. Maybe I didn't dig deep enough. Sad that you have to dig for that stuff. JT was pretty funny at the beginning though. Will Ferrell too, even though I am officially on the "Will Ferrell and John C Reilly Backlash" committee.

I think it's funny how some teams always make trades w/ each other. The Pens-Tampa connection is unbelievable, but the Blue Jackets and Anaheim connection is there as well. No real block busters, but anytime a trade to/from CBJ is made, it's either Anaheim or Edmonton. Any other connections of note?
