looking back is hilarious to me at times. the conklin comment is why i love sports so much. everyone thought that losing fleury would be a huge blow to our season because then we'd have to rely on Sabu and a journeyman who handed Carolina a playoff game. months later we were praising Conks with playing an integral part of saving our season and debating on whether or not he should be forced to give Fluery back his job.

@ jon: i was kinda thinking the same about Dup's as well. i think now that he has time to figure out what his role on the team is he'll be great for us.
i think i was calling for a dupuis goal for most of the playoffs.

I know Dupuis' a professional, but it still would take anyone some time to get used to playing with a player of Crosby's caliber. Some time playing together will go a long way, but I also hope Sid gets the best possible players on his line, be it Pascual (using some people's pronounciation), Satan, Ruslan, or whoever. Training camp's going to be interesting.
And Pascual Perez just might have been the ugliest professional athlete ever.

Finally saw TDK last night. Still a little unsure about how I felt about the ending. Yeah, it leaves it open for a third one, but a few things were left unanswered. Definitely worth the hype, which you rarely hear from me. Only wish that I saw it on IMAX and that there weren't any 14 yr olds behind me saying "This is stupid". I wanted to turn around and say "You know, Wall-E is about 2 rooms down", but I didn't.

I think we can all agree that any discussion of FSP and Mike Lange is automatically prefaced with "this is in no way a comment on Paul Steigerwald..."
But, seriously, what tv executive replaces Lange and keeps his job? There's nothing that could justify it. I don't care if Mike got hammered at the Christmas party and took out his dick and wagged it at the exec's wife. You don't fire him, you say, "That's Mike Lange's dick, honey. You should feel honored."
I know Conks saved the season and Fleury's injury opened the door for him, but that Calgary game was one of the ones where I wanted to see someone beat Therrien with a tire iron afterward. MAF shouldn't have gotten the start at all, since that game was the second of back-to-back road games.
One of Therrien's worst coaching decisions of the year, and if Conklin hadn't channeled Georges Vezina for three months, Therrien would've gotten his ass fired.
It took a while, but I finally forgot about that shitty JBR commercial until today. worst commercial ever.
I vaguely remember a "god help us. ty conklin is our backup." coming up in a post shortly after the game against the Flames. We all make mistakes.

Team Lange/Steigerwald was always money. Smooth as ovaltine.
The only time they lost composure that I can recall is when that helicopter flew ass-backwards through the open roof of the arena. Game 7 of the finals, if I'm remembering it correctly. Steigy swore, but hey who wouldn't, right? FCC gave him a pass.
Lange deserved to be relieved of his TV Play x Play duties because of his Mikey + Edzo Comedy Show...that happened to be interrupted by the Penguins playing a hockey game. [I know for those early '00s teams: 'Playing' was a vague concept...but, Mikey you still had a job to do!]
Getting elected to the HHOF and having 2 Cup™ rings in his ears made Lange soff.
When the product on the ice deteriorated, so did his PxP. It became amateur hour in the booth filled with stories, creating new words and giggling like preteen girls.[GAME ON!] Hey, I don't need to hear a PxP guy tell me the score every 5 seconds or be Charlie Serious the whole broadcast...but their act just grew tiresome + annoying: like someone flicking your earlobe for 2.5 hours while you're trying to watch a game.
He has regained his old form the past couple of years while doing games on the radio, but he shouldn't bump Steigy from his TV gig since Steigy has been more than an adequate replacement.
Shawn, Steigy swore when the dude fell into the scoreboard and it exploded. Everyone was out of the arena by the time the helicopter crashed on the ice.

i used to run into him a few times a month (we went to the same barber on mt washington) for as long as i can remember and i could see him losing it slowly.. then i started seeing him at dennys on mcknight road at 3am (even though i dont think either of us could see very well at that point), only difference was i was in my late-teens/early 20s and with a group of people whereas he was just a drunk old man eating a breakfast grand slam alone

At least the Pens have options for capable TV announcers. Steelers (TV) broadcasts always blow. Listening to Tunch, Wolf and Billy is great, but TV commentary for Steelers games is painful.
in all fairness, the nfl does have the worst announcing crews in all of sports. i feel dummer listening to them

@ dan: the sad thing about the nfl is that the broadcasting gets exponentially worse the more national the broadcast (obviously Madden being the worst). While NHL on NBC games aren't always the best broadcasts, they're certainly better than watching Sunday/Monday Night Football

My reaction was "Eh." I wasn't considering suicide, but I'm not going to pretend I was pleased either. That would just make me a liar.
I remember that comment about the jewelry commercial lady from that recap. It's one of my top five favorite sentences in Pensblogistory. And it's still just as funny.

I would have liked to see what you would have talked about for those 3 years when the Pens were getting their brains bashed in almost every night. Lange's job during that period was to keep listeners any way possible and strictly calling the action to another 5-1 drubbing at the hands of the Flyers isn't the way to do it. Does anyone remember Lange before those years? He was always money in the bank.
My first thought was how much I hated Therrien for starting Fleury in Calgary in the first place. MAF had just started getting hot when he went down, and it looked for all the world like Therrien had killed the season running him out there in both ends of back-to-back road games.
Ah well, at least it all worked out. And Therrien got himself some job security.

as predicted, my wallet is now $100 lighter. I tried to talk them down and let me make payments, but the clerks weren't having any of it. So it looks like my new stick will have to wait. What pissed me off the most was even though I called 3x (now keep in mind I've been out of town probably 3 out of the last 5 weeks), that they're not responsible for returning my calls re: the status of my ticket. so instead of mailing me any notices, they'd rather have johnny law knocking on my door.

Yes, the random conversations can get annoying, but it's the off-season. I used to love coming on here and reading what everyone has to say, but that's not true anymore. Exactly. Staff's comments in flashblog should sum it up. When the most recent "trade" for the Pens is being described in a headline as "whatev", then you know the offseason is slow.
What else is there to talk about?
- Sundin and Sakic are playing the not sure if I'm playing or retiring card, more Sundin and Sakic, so that can only be discussed so much. - We've insulted Miss Hossa as much as one group of people can within three plus weeks. Well, maybe not. Hossa jobbing never gets old.
- Although Sean Avery signed in Dallas, he still plays on the same team as P.B. Charlie.
- Jarda Jagr gone, Straka gone, Kapanen all gone overseas to play, manage, or both.
Now outside of that, there is very little to talk about, which is why topics such as DarkKnightBlog, ventblog (in my case), and gatheringblog has been as popular as ever. Will it be the case during the season? It's possible, but I think during the season you'll not only have Pens talk but talk about 29 other teams, WBS talk (which I gotta thank kaylaj again for checking where the arena was. JS = now wearing a WBS hat), and various minors and junior hockey chat. Or if that's not enough, camp should be starting within a few weeks.
If anything, we can all at least agree the offseason is entirely too long.

How slow is Carlos Lee? Carlos Lee just hit a line drive to third that Jose Bautista appeared to bobble, drop and then kick about five feet away from himself. Yet he still ran over, picked up the ball and threw Lee out by about two or three steps. Carlos Lee, Aramis Ramirez would've beaten that fucking throw to first. Hell, I would've beaten that throw to first and I'm built like Drew Carey.
Another Buccos baseball observation...
They're playing this game in Houston. Pirates are up 8-1 in the middle of the 8th. The Pirates suck, but Houston has been one of the only teams in the National League that has been consistently worse than the Buccos all year.
According to the Weather Channel's website, it's currently 84 degrees Fahrenheit in Houston. The humidity is 69% and the dewpoint is 72 degrees, meaning this would be like watching a baseball game being played in the middle of a fucking swamp right now (the heat index is 89 degrees).
Yet there are still a ton of fans there at this game...at least from what I can tell of the crowd shots.
Do they have the roof closed for this game or do these fans just love them some Astros baseball?
