Colin said...

How do people know what Jagr or anyone is like in the locker room?

Parklife said...

damn it.. spent so long typing a comment, a new cblog arrived.... so,

Why Hossa staying with the Pens makes more and more sense...

With the Rags out of the picture (though, one learns to never say never with NYR) here's a breakdown of the teams thought to be 'in the running' for Hossa....

Oilers - they don't appear to have the cap room anymore. 20 players signed for next year and only 4.3M left in cap space... plus they already have two right wings making over $4M/yr. They'd have to make additional moves to make it happen. (think they regret the big offer sheet to Penner now?)

Vancouver - plenty of cap space but he'd be stuck playing with the Sedin twins... The Canucknucklheads appear to be in rebuilding mode.

Canadiens - they've got room.. but just barely. Besides where does he play? They've already got a game changing RW (Kovalev) to play with Koivu but no second line center to utilize the likes of Hossa.

Boston - no space, nor a serious cup contender. They'd have to make some buyouts but would he really want to go there?

Detroit - The only real threat to come in and grab him. They have the room but they do have two big signees after next year (Franzen/Zetterberg) and not a lot of contracts coming off the books.

Staying in Pgh makes a lot of sense on multiple levels.

Sabrejets said...

Hopefully he's waiting to clear out the suckers before he makes his moves...

bvrhockey9 said...

dumb line combos, malkin and crosby should be on separate lines.

eileenover said...

You do know Malkin's a center right?

PittHockey said...

malkin stays at center.

na$land said...

but jagr would want his own line

wilsmith said...

First shouldn't count unless you actually say something constructive.

bvrhockey9 said...

well, he's not going to get it here. simple as that.

eileenover said...

Too bad for him. Malkin will stay a center because he's more important.

na$land said...

but do you know how hard the first two lines would be to stop?

Parklife said...

"Take Michael Ryder for example. Has his stock fallen or risen today due to the fact he has not been mentioned in a single rumor?"

Stock will rise as goal scorers fall off the table... but, conversely, money will soften as they first day hype dissappears and GMs start to regain their senses. Though, there may be more to Ryder than we know, he fell off big time last year but didn't appear to be injured. Perhaps word on the street is he's broken goods. Though I'd still take a chance on him.

The real winners are the unproven young players who's reputation drove out-of-this-world salaries (Finger anyone?)

fleuryous said...

Everyone...

Jagr would be on the first or second line, but as a winger. He's not a center.

wilsmith said...

malkin on wing = easy line to stop.

bvrhockey9 said...

What if we get Naslund and Hossa? How plausible is that?

If no Hossa, I want him here.

Flyer Hater said...

Jagr at center, now I've heard it all.

na$land said...

i agree that malkin is more important and better
but malkin doesnt request his own line and when he was with crosby a couple times in the playoffs they made a great line

brndlynn said...

those line combos also forgot to take into account for the fact that Jagr is a RW. if you dont know something as simple as \that please dont try to construct your own lines.

PittHockey said...

if we extend fleury, sign hossa or naslund-jagr, and sign expensive candy; ruutu might be gone unless he wants a paycut.

The Big K said...

Pitthockey-

Malkin shouldn't play wing,

BUT...

somechic said...

this is part of the reason jagr isn't a good fit. forget locker room cancer and all that. hes mud or at least a head case unless hes carrying a team. He wouldn't be able to do that here. I respect the man's skills but you basically acted out the problems right here in cblog. I wish it was different.

H.C. Prick said...

Russia gets back at us for the Cuban missile crisis by stealing JJ. Hossa comes back or he goes to the Cads. No Hossa or JJ = Naslund as a Pen. After some of the batshit insane deals that D-Men are getting, Orpik coming back is a flip of the coin. Avery or Bert are Penguins in 08-09. The Fist of GODard and Satan will share a locker room. Those are my final prognostications (yea, I know they aren't controversial).

floridapens said...

i gotta agree with you eileen.

Parklife said...

Pens and the '08 Cap

Looks like the Pens have roughly 18.6M in space for this year. If Fleury commands $4.5 we'll be left with about $14M to spend.

If Hossa signs with the Pens and takes the steep discount, he'll have half of that figure leaving the Pens with $7M. They'd still need a few wingers to fill out the roster.

They could keep a Ruutu if he takes $1.5M or so (he made just over $1.1 last year) and fill out a fourth line and a few healthy scratches with Baby Pens making $750K or less. So, guess $4M used for those moves.

Leaving them with very little to go after anyone else. $3M max perhaps... likely less than that.

I'd guess Ruutu's days are numbered (ditto Orpik) if the Pens are approaching anyone in the $3M range.

wilsmith said...

I didnt realize Kip Miller was that old.

He comes from quite the hockey family.

Dan said...

if fleury gets 4.5 i'm gonna stab myself in the ears with q tips.

bvrhockey9 said...

Why? Huet got close to that and he's not nearly as good as the Flower.

eileenover said...

Come on sHero. Do it.

Dan said...

fleury isn't proven enough to warrant that contract yet. he was more inconsistent than malone even, and any analyst will tell you that.

na$land said...

wilsmith said...

Does anyone know how good Fleury really is?

It's hard to justify throwing the cash when he only finally pulled it all together at the tail end of the season.

Granted, late season playoffs mean the most, but this is the first time he's been solid for a real length of time.

4.5 may be a lot, but I don't think it's out of the question.

eileenover said...

It's FLOWER.

na$land said...

my bad

i didnt think anyone would catch it

lol your picking on me

Matt Betush said...

This may be a little out of nowhere, but can someone maybe explain the other side of the fence to me?

If we just got Mark Eaton on a steal of a deal, we now have 7 mid to top quality defensemen on our roster with Goligowski waiting in the wings. As much as I like free candy, is it economically feasible right now to bring in Orpik at such a high price, and then risk shuffling Letang back to WBS or buying out Sydor's contract?

I'm slightly confused as to why we're still bargaining with Orpik, can someone explain?

Dan said...

bingo young william. and i will be the first to admit i wanted his ass shipped out. he played brilliantly after the injury up until the cup when he was the old standard again at times. if he's going to arbitration we don't have to throw it at him yet. that buys us another year.

TheNWChica said...

he'd be stuck playing with the Sedin twins...

Dude..I can tell you that there are a lot worse places to play than between Danny and Hank...

Ask Anson Carter and Taylor Pyatt who both have had career years playing on lines with them.

eileenover said...

I want to make sure you get the nicknames right. I'm just jobbing you.

na$land said...

lol its all good
ive been reading your stuff since 3
you and flyer hater seem like the only ones who have everything right

eileenover said...

We really need to trade Sydor to free up some money.

eileenover said...

Well thanks!

Parklife said...

$4.5M is a lot for him but considering that players tend seem to be given the benefit of the doubt in many of the Arbitration hearings, plus the fact that the Pens can't walk away from the deal and must accept it. We should assume something high.

Perhaps the Pens can get him into a long term deal at $3.5... that still only frees up another Million or so. He's young, he's been inconsistent but any young goalie usually is.

PittHockey said...

I don't see how we can let orpik go when we need D.

Dan said...

well matt, it's simple science. sydor will be gone, it's a question of how. scuds may be expendable. gill's contract is up after this year, as is scuds. goligoski may not be ready, and gonchar has 2 years left. figure sydor or scuds will be gone, and there's your slot. it's not always a bad thing to have seven d'men either. yes, we need help elsewhere but at the same time, when is the last time our d was as good as it was last year? there is a price to pay for it.

Dan said...

3.5 i'd be perfectly fine with, maybe even 4. anything after that, not cool though.

TheNWChica said...

@annie: Yep, he's Ryan and Drew Miller's cousin.

Parklife said...

meant no disrespect to the Sedin twins but it's rumored they may be on the way out by the trade deadline this year. And my point was that there just isn't much there to make them contenders right now.

And nhlscap has the Huet deal paying him $5.6M/yr.... So, perhaps Fleury is a steal at $4.5... Besides, if the Pens let it get to Arbitration, they'd really better hope for a favorable hearing. You know sure as hell that whatever he gets will be the start of negotiations for a long term deal and he won't move lower than that.

looks like the Ranger have less than $7M available for next year and they still don't have a backup goaltender. They'd need to do some tinkering to make room... 11M on two defenseman and $14M on 2 forwards and almost 7M on their one goalie is going to put the crunch on them. They may not even be able to sign JJ...

C'mon IHK... you know the right way to think. Think about a whole new old element for Jagr. He has won here and I think he might be as good as ever being back here with the guys we have now. Think about how lethal our scoring on the rush could be. Imagine Naslund, Crosby, and Jags coming into the zone. Needless to say I'm a little excited and nothing has happened yet.

Eric Goddard is from Calgary and he's little known because he wasn't used much more than patrolling the waters. Don't expect him to be a mainstay in the line-up every night.
