Hanging By A Moment

We, personally, are Penguins fans, first and foremost. No questioning that.
In a close second place comes our enjoyment of the NHL itself.

We like seeing a mud team like Chicago rise from the depths and become beasts.
We liked seeing a scrappy Bruins team make the playoffs and take Montreal the distance.
And we're also aware that the Cup will not come to Pittsburgh every season.

Waking up this morning, a sense of desperation is among us.
Uncertainty is there.

You feel like you want to e-mail Markus Naslund tell him to sign here,
maybe even text ol' Double J.

Maybe you even make a post on a blog that is the same title as a Lifehouse song.

So much for a relaxing offseason.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Pens fans have watched helplessly as the Stanley Cup roster from less than a month ago
has been picked apart.

We think Seth at [EN] said it best in that MAF, Bing, Malkin, Staal, are the core.
Everyone else around them are extras in the show.

Hossa's gone. And so is one of the best pictures we've ever made:

But you had to be prepared for that.
Him not signing two weeks ago was a sign he didn't want to be here.
The USA Network took a jab at him tonight, by showing "Liar, Liar."

Now, watching Ruutu walk out the door?
Tough. Especially to, of all places, Ottawa.

But that is the business.

All those seasons of futility, and now we have a sense of entitlement;
a feeling that the hockey gods owe us something.

Ray Shero seems content on filling out the Pens roster and going from there.
And that's what his job is. He is staying the course.

Lost in all the shit,
you can't forget about the deal he made with Malkin. [ PG ]

So, what happens if we refresh that TSN Free Agency Tracker...
and see that Naslund signed with Minnesota?
and see New York somehow managed to re-sign Jagr?
and see Pavol Demitra has taken a contract with Atlanta?

We as fans can't be naive enough to think we're entitled to sign a big-name free agent.
We have two of the top 15 forwards in the game locked up for the next 5 years.
We also have an all-world goalie who came into his own this past season.
And honestly, when has a Penguin defense been so solid?

Most teams would dream of being in the Pens' situation right now.
No one around the league will feel any sympathy if and when we don't land a stud.

But in a few days, we'll refresh TSN again.
We'll see the Pens signed Sergei Brylin to a deal.
We'll see the Pens are bringing Miroslav Satan aboard.
Or even Ruslan Fedotenko.

Shero has now said the money that would have gone to Hossa will go to a few players.
New photoshops will roll in.

These are fun and anxious times for sports fans.
Everyone has their opinions on what should be done. It's beautiful.

But we must stay in touch with the reality that we're not entitled to the Stanley Cup.
There are 29 other teams and fanbases who want it just as much.

Regardless, if the Pens sign Michael Peca, we shut the blog down.

While I enjoyed the Hossa-shops, I gotta say seeing his face right now makes me want to vomit all over town.

I think we should stop giving a shit what he does. You know, until Sid schools him next season.

It's gonna be tough seeing players scattered, guys we all were attached to, but the thought running through my brain was the photoshop possibilities whenever we beat the Lightning, or whenever Charlie realizes that Ruutu is one of the Senators now. Hahahahahaaaa

and for the HT, is this a growing trend? Children of Hall of Fame hockey players wanting to be musicians? Didn't we go through this a few months ago with Patty Roy's son?

Whyz no onezz wann play on our teammzz?

My brain is fried after all of this. But I think others have mentioned what I think. The lack of new players being brought it will be the best thing to happen to this franchise. We have "The Core" (just begging for a photoshop of some kind), and other teams spent out the wazzoo for mediocrity. They'll rue the day, so to speak.

That Kevin Lowe photoshop was money. Literally. It can be printed out and used to purchase items and goods. Whoever mentioned that in c-blog the other day, great suggestion...

It is intriguing that almost every GM in the league are overpaying for freeagents (Huet now makes more than Brodeur) for example.... but sHERO is not budging on overpaying or extending contracts farther than they should...

we just have to hope his methods pay out like they have so far...

@ fleuryous - Isn't that from Airplane?

I'm guessing everyone's spent, from all of the comments I caught up on reading from yesturday and early this morning. :)

And in other sports news for a distraction from hockey, Olympic Swim Trials day 4 belonged to Katie Hoff, who swam in 2 finals (200 free and 200 IM) less than 45 minutes apart and set American records (and very nearly world records!) in both. Incredible. Too bad I only had tickets for 2 days...the trials are a good way to distract from free agency. :)

That Kevin Lowe photoshop is my favorite thing ever.

Also Brian Burke is dead on with that assessment, good on him for calling it out. The only GM in the league who's going to trade with the Oilers now is Columbus, because Howson started off in Edmonton.

Holy shit. It's 10 til 8 and there are only 19 comments. Yesterday we had like 30,000 posts at this point. Slackers.

I'm comfortable where we're at. Moving Staal to a wing and allowing Max to run the third line looks more and more attractive everyday. I know Flyer Hater would probably head over to the suicide party at LGP if Kennedy sniffs the top 6, but Shero has faith in the young guys in the system. Here's your noose FH.

Whatever lines we put out there next season will be great. Holy hell they'll have Sid and Geno on two of them. If we sign a Naslund or a Jagr that's fine. If not, we'll make due and win anyway. Fuck free agency.

Matt Gajtka said...

All I gotta say is it's gonna be great when the Pens beat the Wings in next year's Cup Final. What an absurd rationalization by Hossa for signing that one-year deal. We don't need him.

Whom would you rather sign: Naslund or JJ? Both players are pretty well removed from their dominant years in the League, so the question really is "Who can accept that they're no longer the key cog AND still absorb first-line minutes AND produce accordingly?"

Maybe that question gets answered today. If not, whatev. GO PENS.

Check out my blog, I posted something on the prospect of Jagr coming back-->polishprodigy.blogspot.com.

"Pittsburgh has a great team, great people, great organization. I had to compare the two teams, and there's a little better chance to win the Cup in Detroit. I had a great time with Sid and playing on the power play with Geno, but the team in Detroit is something special. I know it's a short term, but we never talked about a one-year [deal] with Pittsburgh. We just talked about a long-term deal. I totally believe Detroit has the kind of team that can win it again."

prior to conkblock going bonkos on with us last year, ask yourself id you would feel comfortable with him and elroy as your goaltending options... basically they have two #2 goalies... i know they only face 12 shots a game, but its still questionable

PensfanSeoul said...

Some thoughts...(i was gonna say dudes, but I dont want to step on the Stoosh...)

First, Jagr and Naslund are both finishers. They can both put the puck in the net. As amazing as Sid is, he is still a better passer than a scorer (imagine if he figures it out and starts doing both....140 points a year? where does his "ceiling" jump to?)I can see Jagr, even at his age scoring 40-45 goals on sids wing. Naslund could score 35-40...Shit, I could get 15, and I have never laced up skates for a hockey game in my life.

If we fail to grab one of these guys the Whitney package for Gaborik is intriguing, but I love the blue line situation at this moment. When I heard yesterday that Free Candy signed on for 6 years, I shit a dozen rainbow cupcakes. We now have as a top 6 Gonch/Candy, Scuds/Whitney, and Gill/Letang...all with extensive SCF experience, Eaton, who is a monster and will return to the forefront of TPB now that GR is gone (WWMED?), and Goligoski i very nearly (1 year away? 2 months away?) from being NHL ready.

sHERO is a genious. We have depth, we have The Core® in place, and tradeable assets that other teams should be coveting, and that will not kill us to get rid of. Sid needs a scorer with him, and sHERO will make sure he has one.

I do play pickup / adult league hockey, just at Bethel and Ice Castle, not Delmont.

Re: Fleury deal -

If Huet is worth $5+M a year and Theodore is worth $4.5M a year, Fleury is certainly worth $5+M a year. What are you going to do, sign him to a one year arbitration set contract? Then what? Next year he notches another 40 win season and commands $7M on an open market? Ridiculous. Sing him up long term and slowly watch him because a top 5 goalie and his contract morph into a hell of a steal like Whits, Free Candy's, Sid's, and Geno's.

But he has been inconsistent!

He is 23. Let me say that again, he is 23.

Fleury's last three seasons:

GAA W L T SV%
'05-'06 3.25 13 27 6 0.898
'06-'07 2.83 40 16 9 0.906
'07-'08 2.33 19 10 2 0.921

See a few trends? GAA going down and SV% going up. That is finding your game as you mature with age. MAF's skill set is like nothing else and he will do nothing but improve in the future. Sign him to that 6 year deal and then watch him be a finalist for Vezina while leading the Pens to the cup.

Sorry about the length of that rant, I just don't get MAF haters.

I kind of have the same feeling PO. I know it would be great to have a couple of NHL capable backups after the top 6 in case of injury, etc., but if they can get a solid RW for him, he should go. I can't imagine he'd want to stick around to be a 7th-8th d-man anyway so he may even push for that. I have seen a couple people speculate that Gonchar would be shopped for a top winger, but I think that is crap. No way do they give up the guy that is perhaps the best offensive d-man in the game, a beast running the PP, and a guy who keeps Geno happy during his ongoing adjustment to the States.

I thought Henrik Lundqvist, or as I like to call him "Verne Lundqvist", played well in the playoffs. We did put up a great offensive performance against him in some games, but I went to game five against the Rags and Lundqvist was unbelievable. That game could've been over much earlier. In those games that we put up 4-5 goals, it could have easily been 7-8 with Michael Rozsifail and Faildor Tyutin attempting to play defense against us.

Colin said...

@ p.o. -

Lundqvist - He is very techincally solid, and has won a gold medal, but hasn't won more than two successive playoff series. I think he could benefit from playing less games next year.

Brodeur - Total stud, Vezinas, Cups, dude has it all. Pay him whatever you want.

Nabby - Man, I love him. I think he plays a great game and if he wasn't on the choke prone Sharks, he might have a Cup already.

Kipper - He is very solid, although had somewhat of a stinker year last year. I think he may be a tad overrated and overrpaid. Don't get me wrong though, he is still top 10. I think he has "peaked" though.

Gigeure - When you have won a Cup and a Conn Smythe, you are legit. Hopefully injuries don't hamper him like they did this year. There are some games where you couldn't shot a grain of sand past him.

Turo - Meh. Too streaky for me.

Luongo - Solid as well, but I think he would benefit from fewer games as well.

I guess my point is that MAF is clearly the best goalie under 25.

For the sake of the Penguins, I will buy the Hossa Wings jersey. Now hear me out on this before people start making photoshops of me as a judas or as two-face. I mentioned this in c-blog earlier in the season and I brought it up at wingblog last Saturday. The night that I got my Roberts jersey signed, he broke his leg and was out for months. A week or so later, Talbot sprains his ankle. Later that week, I took my jersey to somebody to get Crosby to sign it. Within the week, Crosby goes out with the high ankle sprain.

I promised c-bloggers last Saturday that I didn't plan on buying any Penguin jerseys this year, but that doesn't mean I can't buy any jerseys of ex-Penguins.

Thoughts...(that was funny, PFinSeoul)...dudes,

1. As much as I hate the way it went down, I can't entirely disagree with what Hossa said. Detroit DID win the Cup. And if you looked objectively at each team, picking Detroit as a Cup favorite isn't exactly an egregious leap to make. That said...

2. We're fans so we don't have to be analytical all the time. As if losing the Cup wasn't enough motivation, I think Hossa's comments become a rallying point for the players and the organization heading into next year, especially with the guys who are coming back from the Cup run. I even got that sense with Shero yesterday...you could tell the comments bothered him a little, and that's fine because all of these guys should have a sense of pride.

And that steam you see in the air today isn't fog...it's probably a quiet rage boiling in the heart of Sidney Crosby. Hossa, we loved you, but you might have just poked the proverbial bear. Big time.

3. Anyone who subscribes to this belief that the Pens are going away because of what's transpired the last week or so is, well, being stupid.

We still have Crosby and Malkin, who are arguably two of the three besst players in the league. We have a third-line center who can easily move to second-line wing if needed. We have a fourth-line center who could easily center the third line. We have good depth through the lower lines. And our defense returns intact and healthy, set nine-deep. Oh, and we have a franchise-caliber goaltender. There isn't a general manager who wouldn't love to head into next year with what the Pens have right now.

4. Steigy said yesterday that Orpik's re-signing might catapult him into a Gary Roberts-level working class hero with the fans next year. Given the way everyone reacted to the news of his return, I'd say Steigy's on to something.

5. I do have to wonder if maybe they address one of these wing vacancies with a trade of one of the defensemen. Both Starkey and Phil Bourque alluded to that this morning on DVE. Bourque seemed to suggest that Goligoski might be ready to slide into that offensive d-man role on the third pairing next year, similar to what Letang played. I think it's a longshot that wouldn't be explored unless they lose out on some of these other wingers.

6. You know a deal I'd absolutely love to see? Whitney and a draft pick to Nashville for Radulov. There's your top-six winger that would fit right into the core.

I have been thinking about Havlat too. Especially since the Hawks need to dump some salary. He is a special player if (and thats a big IF)he can get and stay healthy. That along with his 6 mil salary make him risky though. He might be a great pick up at the trade deadline.

"We still have Crosby and Malkin, who are arguably two of the three besst players in the league."

The staff...said 2 of the top 15. I was under the impression they liked the Penguins...now i'm not so sure.

The lowest I'll go is 2 of the top 5. if you want to throw Ovechkin, Lecavalier and Iginla...in the mix(latter two just have more experience...if you want to play that angle)

But how in the world are there 13 players even close to Sid & Malk...i don't know!

@stoosh. I think we should have been in on the Zherdev deal. I've read somwhere that the Preds think as highly of Radulov as the Pens and Caps think of Crosby and Ovechkin. Plus they already have a solid top 3 D core. I'm not saying i wouldn't like to see it happen...but I don't think it's enough to get the deal done. I brought up yesterday that we should send Sydor to Chi for Havlat...injury is always a risk with any player..but the payoff could be tremendous.

Hossa is whatev. While I did initially say I was going to break his knees, I really don't care. Detroit can have his d-baggery, and I am definitely of the opinion that Dupuis is a much more valuable asset to this team. It's been clear that he loves being here and that rocks.

I don't want anything to do with Selanne, after what he pulled in the offseason with Anaheim (along with Niedermayer). Call me a grudge-holder, but I cannot believe that he is a serious player anymore. Yes, it's equally the Ducks' management's fault for letting him dilly-dally for half the regular season before deciding to come back, but it shows a lack of commitment to the team, to the game, etc. I don't want someone like that on my team.

You can say the season is long and tough. You can say that spending time with your family is important. You can say that he has a right to choose his own hockey path. I agree with all that. But you don't handcuff an entire organization and drag them along for half a season before making a decision. If you're tired or sick of the grind, then retire.

I think Chechoo would take Whit + picks.

Tell sydor he is #7 or 8. He hated not playing in the playoffs last year, but stepped in and provided veteran leadership when he got back into the lineup. There will be interest, and it would be in the best interest of both parties to move him. If he understands that, i think he will waive the NTC.

Whitney could bring a top 6 without picks. Yes, we need a top 3, but playing with Sid makes a top 6 a top 3, so I think we can manage a straight up for Whit to bring us a talented enough winger.

And I think shopping Sydor to a team that A: needs a defensman and B: still needs to spend money to get to the floor makes a lot of sense.

Sydor for Army and a low round pick? It makes sense IMO, we get a little more grit back in the lineup, a character guy that was well loved in Pittsburgh and has a lot of upside, and atlanta gets better defensively, and starts to spend more money to try to get back to the floor.

I was always a big Coby fan, so my opinion might be a bit skewed by that, but if we can step up and get naslund, I think its a pretty decent deal for both sides.

I think this is why I've kind of held off on being openly critical of the fact that some of these bigger-name wingers are gone. Crosby and Malkin are the ultimate x-factors.

It sucks to lose out on guys like Rolston, Huselius and Vrbata. But given what those guys pulled down in their deals (they were all overpaid), would guys like Jason Williams, Ruslan Fedotenko or even Miroslav Satan be THAT much more of a step down? I could still see these guys putting up some very solid numbers given that Sid and Malkin will be getting them the puck.

Parklife said...

yeah but why would Sydor go to a bottom feeder team at this point in his career? He's still got to agree to it. Sydor would basically be able to pick the teams he wants to go to. These players are taking into consideration a lot of factors that probably don't have an immediate correlation with the "where" aspect.

I mean, if I was Ryan Malone, I'd want to stay in Pittsburgh because its my home. He wanted a longer contract and more money and everyone knew sHero wasn't gonna do it. So be it.

If you want to be funky, find some Isley Brothers or listen to James Brown's 70's Funk Classics.

Al Green's new album is good and don't forget to dust off your old Talking Heads, Led Zep, and Beastie Boys albums.

@ihk, if you like older stuff, check out The Answer - new band, but they rock in an old-school way.

Re: HCMT - If all the rumors are true about him being hard to play for, that might be something that has an impact on the teams cohesion. The players would share the common quality of perhaps a dislike of the coach, which would bring them together. I'm not saying that is what is happening or it's HCMT's coaching style, but there is something to be said for it. Anyone who's read Stephen Ambrose's "Band of Brothers" or has seen the mini-series on HBO could see how this would promote a team's unity.

A source said the Oilers are offering a one-year deal at more than $7 million US, leery as they are of a 36-year-old who might retire after one season and leave them on the hook for his massive salary cap hit whether he plays the second season or not.

Jagr apparently wants two years, which makes the Oilers a long shot. If Jagr heads for Omsk, Russia, and double-digit millions, stays in New York or lands elsewhere in the NHL and the Oilers go oh-for-two superstars this week, they are prepared to move ahead with their already improved roster.

I'm with you on why no one seems to want to play on the Pens. If all these assholes want to win a cup shouldn't someone be anxious to play along side Syd and Ev?

I mean, we damn near won it this year...

I think plenty of guys would love to play here, but given that Shero and the ownership have clearly proven that the bulk of the cap money is going to the core players like Sid, Malkin, Fleury, Gonchar, Whitney and Orpik, the Pens are somewhat limited in terms of what they can afford to offer some of those guys.

In effect, some of these other free agents - guys who are looking to cash in for the first time or maybe for one final time - are being asked by the Pens to do the same thing Orpik did...take maybe a little bit less than what they could get on the market.

In a market filled with general managers who are desperate to do something...ANYTHING - see Sather, Glen and his ridiculous offers to Rozsival and Redden or perhaps the money Toronto threw at Jeff Finger - a chance to win a Cup might not mean as much to some of these guys.

I have no doubt that the Pens probably presented offers to guys like Rolston, Vrbata, Huselius, etc...and I'm most of those were very fair, very attractive offers.

But:

1. again, there are general managers who are so desperate to do something, they'll give All-Star caliber money to guys who are nothing more than slightly above-average complimentary players, and...

2. given the cap considerations and looking at money already tied up within the organization, there's only so much the Pens could offer.

With this being a relatively weak free agent market, going to four years, $6M a year for someone like Rolston would've made it damn near impossible to find the money to, say bring Orpik back...or maybe bring Orpik back AND sign Fleury beyond just this year (assuming they would've had to then take him to an arbitration hearing).

By dropping out of the bidding for some of these guys, they might have very well preserved their ability to both bring Orpik back AND sign Fleury to his long-term extension.

We've said before that Shero will need to get creative to manage this cap. He's done that so far. His decision to take Fleury to arbitration looks to have paid off in spades and allowed the market to sort itself out. He handled Orpik masterfully. Once Fleury's deal is done, he's locked up almost all of his core with the exceptions of guys like Letang and Staal.

He can now choose to bring in some lower-cost wingers like Satan, Williams, Fedotenko or Naslund, who should produce roughly about the same as some of these other wingers that cost other teams much more money. He can also explore some trades given the team's defensive depth or look at maybe even throwing an offer sheet out there.

When this all sorts itself out, I think Shero will have played this free agent market like a fiddle.
