The complete schedule will be released later today, but just to get up to date, here's what we know now.

The Penguins will open the season in Sweden with two games against the Ottawa Senators, October 4th and 5th.
The New Jersey Devils will be in town on October 11th for the Mellon Arena's home opener.
And the Pens will be in Boston for the Bruins home opener on the 20th of October.
[ Eye on the Media ]
2008-09 kicks off the first season under the new schedule matrix.
Over the 82 game schedule they'll play each Atlantic Division opponent 6 times.
3 at home, 3 on the road.

They'll play the rest of their Eastern Conference opponents 4 times.
Twice at home, twice on the road.

And they'll play every team in the Western Conference once.
With the exception of their "at-large" Western opponents,
the Sharks, Blue Jackets, and Red Wings, whom they will play twice.

The first thing you do when you print out that new schedule is circle those Detroit games.

oh, there we go.

morning = saved
i should probably sleep so i can wake up to the schedule.
that video by Eric P will not help me sleep. too good.
dammit.
bruins home opener = I'll get pushed back to the cheap seats
Personally, I was psyched about Pesonen before I read that article...now it makes me more optimistic.
Schedule today!!
Jefe - If I didn't have to go to work, I'd def. sleep till the schedule came out. Good idea. Do it.
the c-bus dispatch = joke.
Does Portzline even know what Shero was up against this offseason? There was no way that he was gonna keep this entire team intact and be able to re-sign his RFAs. Yes, Ray lost a rental player, but he responds by signing the 2nd best center in the league to a 5 yr extension. Also, Satan may not be...ok, definitely is not HossaHossaHossa, but it's not like he's a 3rd line plugger either. The guy knows how to score, and I'm sure part of the reason his numbers dropped was because he commited to the Indian's system while on the Isle. I wouldn't be surprised to see 25 goals out of him this season.
Also, Shero managed to sign a franchise goaltender in MAF for the next seven years and managed to keep Orpik here, who probably could have made 4-4.5 mil on the open market.
I'm not gonna say what Shero did should rank in the top 5, but to rank him 26 out of 30th? Are you kidding me? One of those spots should be ranked for the O&L Show.
They should be somewhere in the bottom five for the following reasons:
- not filling positions that were needed by your club. You trade away your only all-star defenseman for a prospect who from my understanding SJ has soured on? Kolzig would have been a good signing if this was 2000. To me, Smith is still unproven, and his numbers down the stretch did nothing to help think that he's a true #1. I won't even waste my breath on the 620 forwards they signed.
Playing Western Conference teams during the regular season is like seeing the bride before the wedding. Bad luck.
Or maybe it's talking finals before the season even starts that's jinx city. I forget.
hmm, sleeping til the schedule comes out, that's a good idea since i'm unhappily awake. if these stomach pains i have go away, i may have a plan!
eric p: great work. i cant think of any better way to start the day. well...maybe one better way but this is #2.
The Dark Knight premiere is in 17 hours. woooooooo!
http://watch.tsn.ca/nhl/clip67144#clip67144
Bottom 5? LAME.
I'm sorry, but if resigning the 2nd best center in the league to 5 more years, one of the best goalies to 7 more years, and (hopefully soon!) resigning a young center with great potential as a wing/great defensive forward to another long-term contract puts you in the bottom 5, well then...I think they're taking too much peyote.
That being said, LAY OFF THE DRUGS.
Shero did the best he could.
He was not going to overpay, and he didn't.
BlahworkIdon'twantogo.
Have a good day, everyone.
Columbus Dispatch = joke
The wouldn't know a good move in Columbus if one kicked them in the pecker. Apparently they didn't take in to account the players the Pens re-signed, only the ones that walked away. Dicks.
ugh, tiredashellblog
two cans of red bull ain't doing the trick so far.
need.more.news.
Or better yet, c'mon 330 so I can head home so i can crash for an hour or two.
Maple Leaves give away 19k tickets as promotion
As much as I want to job them and use the "Here's how bad our team sucks: we have to give free tickets so people will come see us" joke, I can't. They had a sponsor pick up the tab, not that there's anything wrong with that, but I wish more teams would go this route in promoting the game, especially in markets with low attendance.
Nice work, Toronto. (Did I actually just say that and mean it?)
i hate those grading GM and off season move columns simply cause they bust GMs who couldn't keep the whole team or don't give a whole lot. i think it was burnside who had one and gave everyone in the ATL division an up except the Isles who went sideways. And he used a bunch of maybes, ifs, and buts. it basically reminded me of an article someone would write if they didn't want to pick a favorite. but it did help me learn that brian lawton is involved with the TB org which at this point in time i still find very funny
happy dark knight eve!!
i expect to be having multiple batgasms by 12:01 am.
wooooooooooo.
anyone out there know the time the schedule will be released?
Eric P comes through big time on a crappy morning. The Malkin Slapshot was in there, the Talbot Stuff, and even a Bill Thomas goal.
Nice work.
I'd like to hear Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch explain why not paying too much for Malone and getting stabbed in the back by Hossa were wrong moves for Shero.
Dick.
More speculation that Tampa is striving to become Pittsburgh South....
TIOPS claims Tampa may bring in Craig Patrick.
It's from TIOPS, so take it for what it's worth. If it's true, it just continues Tampa's ridiculous campaign to become the Penguins.
Good GODard, Patrick?
Seriously?
wow i havent even thought about TIOPS aka BOTT since the free agent frenzy
sham-wow is Craiger is looking old or what!!!
Like it's Shero's fault that Hossa was a jagoff. Bottom 5? As if!
I think we all need to take Mr. Portzline with a grain of salt. After all, he is from Ohio. How much could he really know?
Portzline knows as much about hockey as the bad guy from the movie Willow. Just use the shampoo and the crabs will go away.
I guess this is the reason why Aaron Portzline is writing for the Columbus Dickscratch instead of a real newspaper. They have a shitty hockey team for a few years and suddenly he's an expert on making smart off-season moves in the salary cap era. The ignorant douche should stick to writing about women's volleyball... What a fuckin buckeye! By the way; the OSU's mascot's face looks like a wide open asshole. Must be the trend out there.
Wow, Eric P, what a fine video. Rob Zombie makes a fine hockey soundtrack.
Rush on Colbert last night = Gold, Geddy, Gold!
Peso-mania is running wild in Carlisle.
j.s - I'm glad Toronto is doing something to promote hockey again. Watching games there is really boring, hopefully, this will help but I doubt it.
Free tickets for one game will not help the fact the tickets are too expensive for families. This is a great publicity stunt, but will have no overall effect with attendance expanding to a different demographic.
Plus, no matter what the team is still going to suck.
Why ya gotta insult women's volleyball like that?
You know, people should be looking at Columbus for guidance when it concerns hockey. I mean look at how many Stanley Cups they've won...or at least how many Western Conference Championships they've won....well at least they haven't fizzled out in the second round like other teams out west....or been upset in the first round!
That Eric P video was great stuff. Way to get the morning moving.
I can't wait to see the schedule so I can plan my entire Fall/Winter around it.
@Lis: Are you a volleyball player?
Girls volleyball players = total sweetness
I just want the schedule to come out so I can waste a few hours of my life importing it into my Outlook calendar.
ANOTHER DOUCHE BAGGIO ARTICLE FROM THE TENNESEAN http://tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080717/NEWS0202/807170381&referrer=FRONTPAGECAROUSEL
INTERESTING STUFF
Didn't Shero get bad grades last year too? Or didn't the Pens get ranked bad too by some folks? I don't remember, that was a year ago... I barely remember yesterday.
Either way. Gradings can really just fly out the window for me. It's nice to see your team on top, but really, what do they mean? Some guy had a deadline so he tried to sound smart and put something down on paper that doesn't really mean anything until the puck drops this season and we see how things really shake down.
Don't put much weight into what Aaron Portzline tells you. He is the same joke that said Malone to the Jackets was a done deal back in June.
Oh yea, and great work Eric P. Loved the video.
Wouldn't surprise me if Shero got a lousy preseason ranking before 07-08. After all, his only moves were signing the best center in the game to a 5-year extension (which no one ever seems to notice -- contract extensions just aren't sexy) and signing Petr Sykora and Darryl Sydor. Sykora was coming off a down year on a really craptastic Edmonton team (is this sounding familiar to anyone?) and Shero got him cheap.
Odds are, the Dark Lord and Fedotenko are going to see ice time with Bing and/or Malkamania, after a year spent on a team where the leading scorer finished with 49 points. I have a feeling that everyone who's been on Shero's ass this offseason is going to be kissing it when Satan and Fedotenko turn out to be the two biggest bargain signings of the year.
And of course, it was the Columbus Dispatch. They wouldn't know what good hockey looked like if it kicked their entire sports staff in the balls/ovaries.
@ bng:
I practiced with my volleyball team in high school one year but I wasn't allowed to play because I was in 8th grade and you had to be in 9th. By the time 9th grade came around, I started playing field hockey instead.
Now I just play on a rec volleyball team with some friends. We're not too bad. Everybody is pretty committed to trying to learn how to play the game the right way and getting better to move up to the higher skilled leagues.
We go check out the Villanova girls team when they have weekend games in the fall. I watch a lot on the Big 10 Network and so I've watched a lot of Penn State, Michigan, and Michigan State. Those girls are like 6'4" though. I'm 5'4" so I think I chose the right sport in 9th grade!
playing sharks twice? YESSS!!!
that means there will be a game in san jose i can attend for sure.
Volleyball is a pretty fun sport to play, and watch. The only thing I don't like about it is when you play it at family reunions just for fun but some people take it way to seriously. It's like, "Whoa fella, easy on the fist pumps and spandex." Of course, Uncle Spencer always did have a thing for spandex...
"And of course, it was the Columbus Dispatch. They wouldn't know what good hockey looked like if it kicked their entire sports staff in the balls/ovaries."
Exactly
I'm not even gonna knock Portzline for working for the C-bus dispatch. For every Portzline that's working a b-rate paper, there's a Janne Pesonen-type working for a small town paper in the middle of nowhere waiting to be signed to a big league contract.
However, this joke is probably more comparable to Vladmir Vujtek.
vanderlasser...
Rush owns the world. They totally crapped on Colbert.
and I think that's twice this week where I managed to work Vlad Vujtek's name into a post.

I hope the results of next year are the same as the Dark Knight.
Let's put a Smile on the Face!!!

@Lis: If you had said you played Volleyball then my cblog crush on you would have seriously got me in trouble with Ms. BNG.

@BnG > Bad bng... baaaaaad. :-)
@maxpower, I was going to say something about naked midget volleyball, but I decided not to.
Does the cblog panel feel that Peso has the skills to be a first line winger, or is that wishful thinking?
anyone out there know the time the schedule will be released?
Dark Knight=overrated
@ m.van
I will garauntee it. I watched 6 full games of Peso giving back Dmen's testicles after burying the biscuit. I'll bet my autographed Spice Girls album he racks up no less than 35. He may even nail 60 or more. More importantly he's a big play maker like Sid. He can move the puck through traffic and deliver the mail to someone rushing or camping in the slot. Shit I might have a man crush.
FH
did you see it?
i was listening to the X this morning and people who saw the screening last night were calling in saying it was unreal
@Dr. Turk: My best friend and I went to Schmidt's when we were in Cbus for the draft last summer. Mmmmm....so lecker! And yes, they did have to have the oompa band roll us out.
P.O.
I didn't see it but from word of mouth and hype, people are acting like this will be the best movie ever made. It will end world hunger and solve the middle-east crisis. I haven't seen this much hype around a movie since Titanic.
haha very true
thats what happened to me with Wedding Crashers... i went in with such high hopes and it was just an ok movie that had its moments
12:01 and still no schedule.
What bullshit.
Was it for sure that it would be noon? And was it noon EDT or noon PDT?
I've got to disagree with the Columbus dispatch on being in the bottom five. Shero lost Hossa and Malone, but he locked up the entire core!
What does anyone from Columbus know about good hockey anyway...

How about a week long homestand to start the season when the Pens get back from Stockholm. Awesome.
@stilly: At least they're at home when they get back; and there's three hours less time diff. than the poor Quackers last year. I think it was a mistake for them to be on the road after London.

Starting the season off right. Sens, Devils, Flyers, Caps. This'll either be the cockiest or most suicidal comments section on any blog in the country after October 16.
No! Not 7pm starts! Its too hard for me to get home in time! Bah! I guess those will be the days I come in at 6 to get off at 330.
Could someone please copy and paste the schedule in an email for me? I'm at work and the stupid guard dog program won't allow me to go to most sport sites but still allows me to watch some porn. go fig.

Just like football should only be played at 1 PM on Sunday Afternoon, hockey should be played at 7PM.

1. I like the fact that the NHL gave us four straight home games after the Field Trip to Sweden. Then again...*takes sip of Sarcasma*...the NHL loves the Pens and wants to put Sidney Crosby in the best chance to win, so what the hell was I thinking when I was hoping we wouldn't get ska-rewed by the schedulemaker.
2. No Pens at home for Halloween means methinks we need to do a C-blog Halloween get-together, perhaps for that Saturday Nov 1 Blues game.
3. Merry Christmas to us! Merry Christmas to us! Merry Christmas to Pensblog! Merry Christmas to us!

It can be done with a basic Excel file I believe.
@steve -thats a solid idea, but then i looked it up and.. Vegoose, according to this is a no go this year.
im calling a hat trick for satan that night though. or a mean egging/TP'ing to someone if the pens lose.
Oh wow, I didn't even think of the Halloween thing...hmm...since the Pens/Blues game is one I'd be able to road trip to fairly easily, maybe I should start planning an epic "FREE CANDY!" sign...
Colin:
The pens site has a schedule up now. You can probably just link the page or copy and paste their schedule into any application.
@ The Fandangler -
Importing into Outlook is a total bitch. I tired to make my own Excel schedule to bring in and failed miserably. Thanks for the heads up though.
colin
i know what you are talking about with the schedule.. i did that the past few years too... it isnt an option yet on the website

huge pens crowd last time i went. i better get my tickets FAST.
We are going to the Tuesday Oct. 14th home game against the Flyers...
...and by "we" I mean everyone on here, even Flyer Hater.
joose putting her foot down
@jefe: everytime Dave and Panger say jobing.com I laugh a little.
crap I'll be in Pred ville that week
im on pins-and-needles waiting for the season ticket waiting list to be updated... god i hope i can get a full season
Blah for not being able to post during my work week (no time!) so this is about old news, but I have to mention that I'm happy about the Pens signing Bill Thomas to a contract. He played college hockey here in my hometown of Omaha, NE, and he was a big part of the UNO Mavericks making it to the NCAA tournament for the first time. Hockey fans in Omaha remember him fondly for that. I think it's cool that I got to see him play in college...I hope he gets NHL time this year. :)
How far do you think you could throw a midget?
•ROCCO!!!! is currently leading THE Open Championship [snobby brits] at -1.
•John Daly is in the clubhouse at +10 [HA!]
•Tiger Woods is at home and still a dick.
Gawd....first Detroit v Pittsburgh game..
is on my birfday..
I hope it's happy birfday to me!!
anyone in here know anyone who works for the pens that can get me bumped up the season ticket waiting list in exchange for a nice cash tip?
Max, I have no problem with standing outside all day for student rush tickets. I don't have classes on Tuesdays, so I'm ready.
Dammit. No Vegoose. Las Vegas is a ridiculous town when it's full of hippies for a crazy weekend.
Jefe, if you road trip to Phoenix or Denver, we need to talk.
@ Dr. Turk -
•Tiger Woods is at home and still a dick.
Johnny Miller says he and only he is allowed to make any sort of reference between Tiger Woods and dick.
Joose FYI
The club also plans to select four games for special “Student Rush” promotions. For those games, college and high school students will be able to purchase discounted tickets for $20. A total of 400 tickets will be available for each of the four games.
Ok so who's going to the Feb. 8th game with me?
stoosh...
HA!
maybe since NBC doesn't have any Open broadcasting rights....Miller's at the Woods' compound helping the poor guy 'rehab' [wink, wink]
Andy...er Bryan...mmmm TERRY Murray to be the next Kings coach?
link
the guy is a winner, though...or should I say: whiner [like his older bro]
@ Eileen -
Christine and I are buying 10 games from my brother-in-law and sister-in-law's season ticket package. They're splitting up their tickets four ways - they're keeping eleven, we're getting ten and then two other couples are each getting ten (I think preseason games will go to whoever wants them...in that case, me).
Anyway, I'm not sure how we're splitting the tickets up yet - I'm voting for a ticket draft to make things fair, but who knows.
Anyway, we'll be in C-12 for ten games this year, so I've already earmarked Oct. 14th (Joose's mention above) and Feb. 8th (your mention) as games that the Stooshes will target.
Thanks, p.o.
They do student rush for every game, right? (obviously not playoff games, but you know what I mean.)
@eileen
MEEEE i just dont know how yet..
my best friends neighbors work for the pens.. i was at my friends house during the day on july 1st for about 5 minutes and the whole time i spent talking to the neighbors telling them what was going on with FA, they had no idea cause they were outside working on the yard.. maybe i can mooch some tickets off them since my friend has gotten mellon arena concert tickets..
I guess I should really start saving my money since I plan to go to a buttload of games this year.
They did do student rush for every game last year... It's hard to get the whereabouts for student rush before the season starts.
Do it penstone! Everyone needs to make use of their connections.
@joose
they must do them for a lot of games because two girls who lived down the hall from me last semester seemed to go to almost every game this past season and they always missed class to go to student rushes like hoooouuurrs before the game..
@eileen
haha yeah but unfortunately im sure im not high on their list for giving such precious commodities as penguins tickets to
Eileen
Word to that. After I went to game 5 vs. the Rangers, I figured it was a good time to start a Penguins Fund jar for next season.
So far, it is empty. It will probably remain empty, but I'll still go to as many games as I can and pay for it with money I don't have.
You just need to kiss some ass. I never commend that, but it's different with the Pens.
@eileen
haha! yes, i see it now.. "hi, ben(my friend)'s neighbors! i was noticing that you needed some lawn work done! how about cleaning your house? car washes? a new roof? grooming your 3 rabid dogs? oh, why am i doing all this hard labor, you ask? no reason, just.. maybe one penguins ticket.. just one, i beg of you"
joose
they usually do it for every game, but by the look of the article that came in, it seems they are going to do student rush for 4 games only this season, thats why i gave you a heads up
im hoping to get mini plan tickets. the waiting list is good for something i guess.
Only 4 games? That's stupid.
That blows.
I'm delighted that both games in Washington are on Sundays this season. Makes for easy traveling.
I probably don't have a snowball's chance in hell to get a pair of single-game tickets for either the Leafs on October 18 or the Sabres on November 15, but I'm going to try. It's been 8 years since I saw my one game at the Igloo, and although the atmosphere at Verizon is close to a home game, it's still not a home game.
And I'll probably make a Pens road trip to Raleigh in April for their game on the 4th. Cheers.
Is it October yet?
the article i saw said that they were able to renew 99% of season tickets... that left about 180 spots open for people to get in on tickets from the waiting list (at this rate ill have season tickets in approx. 10 years).. they also mentioned that sept 4th the miniplans will go on sale to all those on the waiting list and that they would be holding 400 tickets aside for 4 different games for a student rush program
@steve_denver -road trip to jobing.com arena is about 40 minutes for us.
a plane/roadtrip to denver is strecthing it. we might have done anaheim/LA but thats not happening. next year maybe.
p.o.-
We got on the waiting list in August last last year and there were 800 people in front of us at the time. I figure we will be waiting till the new arena. :(
slush
thats why i am offering cash rewards for anyone who can get me bumped up on the waiting list (might have to call in a favor to my best friend's mom who also happens to be a member of pittsburgh city council)
I'm surprised there's student rush at all after the way the place filled up last year.
i need to find out when hawks tickets go on sale so i can see the pens live.
columbus dispatch raises ray shero to #12 on the list after his screwed acquisition of danny richmond
If Hockey did not exist...
Mary Ann Hossa would be wearing a dress,(an ugly floral print polyester one) heels, standing on street corners and saying things like: "Hey there, big fella. How's about a good time?"
So we should be very grateful that Hockey exists.
I'm not sure I would trust Danny Richmond playing D on my inline team, let alone my AHL team. I read that the only way he sees D is if he reads his name aloud.
This trade reeks of fail.
yep, time to piss some people off
