You want to why being a hockey fan is great?

No other sports fan in the United States has to go to Babelfish
to read about a player that their favorite team has allegedly signed.

But that's what we all found ourselves doing Friday morning.

[Actual Swedish article]

The caption under the headline translates to "Pesonen instead of Hossa?"

The player is Janne Pesonen. A Finnish forward.
They are finishing the deal apparently. [PG]

Pesonen could be a big deal, or he could be the next Koltsov.
It is a low risk, extremely high reward move.
Ray Shero doesn't seem like they type of guy to move on something he doesn't think will work.

According to Andy Strickland, Pesonen is a complete beast. [HockeyBuzz]

  • 26 years old, about 5-11.
  • Fast as balls.
  • 4 time champion with Kärpät (also one bronze)
  • Leading scorer for his team , Karpat.
  • Top scorer and goal scorer in 2007-2008.
  • Best +/- 2007-2008.
  • Playoffs MVP 2006-2007.
  • Rookie of the year 2003-2004.
  • Some hockey people consider him better than the highy talented Fabian Backstrom that signed with the Stars.
Here is a quote from someone familar with him on [Hockey's Future board]
Thanks to [Jonathan V] for the heads up

"It would be great to see Pesonen playing in Pens. Pesonen has been in past two years a very important player for his team Kärpät. Like someone already said Finns are usually also good in defence zone and Pesonen doesn't make exception. For example last year Pesonen played in first pp-unit and in first sh-unit. Pesonen has good hands and isn't afraid to challenge with the puck. Pesonen is a player who can do great in NHL and at worst he will be ok third line winger. I think his style of playing fits well in NA and he will be ready to play in NHL from the very first game unlike Ville Leino (Detroit) who made similiar points with Pesonen last year in FEL."

"Pesonen would have been also with team Finland at WHC this year but at the training camp they realized that Pesonen had some fractures in his hand. Played almost all the playoffs this year with a broken hand and some national games after season ended in FEL. He played with painkillers for a long time but they didn't realize it was that bad.Anyway I hope you'll sign Pesonen and I whis all the luck to Pesonen and Pens next season."

From Mr. Penguin on the same boards...

Janne Pesonen! My favorite player in the Finnish Elite League. I've seen this guy play live many times and he is a great offensive player, but not bad defensively either. He has great hands, great movement and he's not afraid to get physical sometimes. The only complaint that people seem to have about him is that he gets frustrated easily and he's a bit of a diver, but I've seen worse than him. Pesonen could become a pretty good 2nd-3rd line winger in the NHL, and wingers are what Pitt needs!

Here is a youtube of Pesonen.

Great music.

Speaking of great music.

Pesonen plays guitar? [Janne Pesonen's homepage]

For the past year since Kevin Lowe signed Anaheim RFA Dustin Penner to an offer-sheet,
Ducks GM Brian Burke has had what they would call in the gansta rap community "a beef" with Oilers GM Lowe.

But instead of heading to the studio and laying down a "diss song", which frankly we would have loved to hear, he went to every member of the media who would listen and blamed Lowe for the escalating cost of young players.

Along with just about everything else wrong with sports, except maybe the DH.

Previously Lowe had remained mum on the issue,
but he finally fired back in an interview on a local Edmonton sports radio station. [ TSN ]
"Where do I begin?," started Lowe. "He's a moron, first of all. Secondly, he really believes that any news for the NHL is good news. Thirdly, he loves the limelight and I don't think anyone in hockey will dispute that. Lastly, he's in a pathetic hockey market where they can't get on any page of the newspaper let alone the front page of the sports, so any of this stuff carries on."
Then Lowe brings it:
"He's an underachieving wanna-be in terms of success in the NHL. He won a Stanley Cup? Great. I've won six Stanley Cups, you want to count rings?"

Game. Set. Match. Lowe.

We'd post more NHL news, but that quote needs to stand by itself.

Game #15
[ 5 down, 67 to go. PENS LOSE. ]
[phi.<span class=[pit.<span class=
3 - 1

Sid and Malkin morph into Lecavalier and St. Louis during the last 10 minutes,
trying to tie it up.

The Flyers were shutting everything down.

Lord Therrien knows he has nothing to lose and pull Sabu late.
And, bam, Sid gets knocked down. We got a 6-on-4.

Powerplay streak.
Chicken Little and Marty the Chicken exchanged heated words in the tunnel after the game.

::::::C-BLOG CITY::::::::

Commit to the Stoosh.

Go Pens

"Pittsburgh has a great team, great people, great organization. I had to compare the two teams, and there's a little better chance to win the Cup in Detroit. I had a great time with Sid and playing on the power play with Geno [Evgeni Malkin], but the team in Detroit is something special. I know it's a short term, but we never talked about a one-year [deal] with Pittsburgh. We just talked about a long-term deal. I totally believe Detroit has the kind of team that can win it again."

-Marian Hossa-

Thanks to [Eddie] for that.

I haven't been home today, but has Lord sHero explained where in the hell he found this Finnish dude? He's got some 'splainin to do I think....just so we know who the fuck this kid is!

Oh, and I so don't mind being second to the great SS. Hooooo!

Edmonton might be a small market, but it has one of the greatest and surest fan bases among all NHL teams - unlike Vancouver, where we have these fair weather fans all the time, which really frustrates the hell out of me (though it could be a good time to get season tickets from the looks of things). Anyway, Edmonton fans are (more or less) true blue all the way.

My guess is this guy is gonna be looked at one of two ways by then end of the year
A-Finnish Koltsov
B-Finnish Ho$$a

What i want to know is where the hell did sHero find this guy and if he'll be playing for us for sure in '08-'09

P.S if he does i vote that the tune from his Youtube be his official theme song.

Like OMG Alyssa Milano Charmed blah blah blah

It seems as if Shero may have found the new Finnish Flash. Staal's going to have nothing but speed in Dupuis and Pesonen on his line.

Awesome Dicky logo Stephen, and to all newcomers, that quote is but one of numerous reasons why we commit to nothing but the Stoosh.

Great post...LOVED the jersey burning and I can't get that Janne P. song out of my head.

To help fill the summertime void (at least until we get the next JP video), coverage of the Tour de France starts on Versucks at 8:30 am today and continues for the next 3 weeks.

The live, in-race announcing team of Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen is just great; world-class great. Be sure to check out their calls at the end of a race, especially sprint finishes. Liggett get so fedetenko'ing excited...they're very fun to listen to.

Race favorites are Australian, Spanish, Russian, Italian, etc...should be a very interesting 3 weeks!

If you have any questions about the race, post them here and I'll try to get answers for you.

Anything to get throught the next 3 months!

Once again you're short changed by Detroit.

Not only did they steal the league's best backup goalie, and Hossa of course, they also left you dumbfounded when it comes to the Finnish player market.

A couple of months ago the Wings signed Ville Leino, the best player currently playing in Finland. Leino won the Golden Helmet award last season for player of the year.

Pesonen may be the second best player but maybe you're all happy with that? Coming in second behind Detroit is probably something you'll have to get used to. Unless of course you decide to tank for draft picks again.

I am amazed we have trolls in here after the Final is over.

Kevin Lowe=honest. I like that.

We still have a hole or so to fill in our lineup. Let's go get a guy with some grit and trade Darryl Sydor or buy him out.

Some interesting, and for a nice change, true comments by Rossi and Starkley, with an unreal comment by Free Candy.

Rob Rossi here not being an ass for a change; Joe Starkey, saying something meaningful.

Dispelling those rumors of a Tampa Bay North(I got Rangers fans already thinking that), Rossi states:

The salary cap, which has increased every year since the NHL returned from the canceled 2004-05 season, stands at $56.7 million. If it does not rise next summer, the Penguins would have 46.8 percent of their cap space available to supplement two superstar centers, a franchise goaltender and a pair of defensemen who provide balance - Whitney has recorded 99 points the past two seasons, and Orpik has paced the team in hits the past three.

Compare that to Tampa Bay, which entered last season with 52.7 percent of its cap space tied to three forwards and a defenseman.

Only two of those forwards, center Vincent Lecavalier and right wing Martin St. Louis, remain with the team. Center Brad Richards was traded to Dallas in February, and defenseman Dan Boyle was dealt to San Jose on Friday.

Tampa Bay North=Fail

Starkey said:

" Look at Ottawa's lack of depth on the wings. Look at Tampa Bay's defense (and would anyone feel entirely comfortable with Mike Smith and Olaf Kolzig in goal?). Look at the Flyers' depth on defense. Washington's, too. Look at some of the misguided contracts lavished in free agency, starting with the Rangers' ridiculous six-year, $39 million deal for 31-year old defenseman Wade Redden.

Last we saw Redden, he was doing a wonderful imitation of a speed bag as the Penguins beat him to a pulp in the first round of the playoffs. Losing Hossa obviously was the greatest disappointment of the past week, but in the end, the Penguins managed to reinforce their team-first culture. As with the Red Wings, it is one predicated on sacrifice with an eye toward winning. We knew that was true on the ice. Now, in the wake of Malkin, Fleury and Orpik all taking less than market value, we see it is just as true in contract negotiations.

Make no mistake: The so-called hometown discount is alive and well in Pittsburgh. If you'd asked me after the Cup final, I'd have said Orpik was gone, and Malkin would want more money than Crosby.

Too bad Hossa didn't buy in. Too bad Malone and the others are gone.

But what's left, you ask?

A lot to look forward to, I'd say.

He's right about these points at least.

Oh, and Brooks Orpik?

"Orpik spoke for the Penguins' core players by acknowledging the examples set by Crosby and Malkin, each of whom likely would have commanded allowable maximum offers on the open market.

"They took less to be here," Orpik said. "I'm not saying everybody should, but that's a pretty good standard when those two guys sacrifice to help the team.

"We've all been together for a while. We all want to be here for a long time, because this thing is going to be pretty good. So why can't all of us help out a little bit?"

As for Leino. Many people consider Pesonen more NHL ready then Leino, and Pesonen has also beaten Leino in terms of points in the past two SM-Liiga seasons. Maybe Detroit just, dare I say, made a mistake in going after Leino instead of Pesonen?

Pesonen will Piss on 'Em!

The Goon Blogger said...

C-Blog, I come to you with a problem, dear sirs and madams, I implore you to help me in this dire time.

I needs me a new jersey.

Jarkko Ruutu, forever loved by me, can never be worn again until he is out of the NHL or back with the Penguins, simple as that.

I know not who I want to buy.

My favorite players:

Scuds - Trade Block, will be gone if I get his, also, will he change back to 5 if Sydor goes?

Talbot - FA next season, will go if I get his.

Malkin - So many already owned, and I would be remiss if I didn't say I wanted a unique jersey that not many have. I do feel a connection to him as I do speak Russian and was watching him in Juniors and in the RSL. But fact remains, I don't wanna be one of the people with a Crosby, Malkin, or Fleury jersey (No offense to those that have them). So that's the maybe pile.

Orpik - This is the one I'm leaning towards the most. Free Candy is beyond solid, and signed for long term. I'm even leaning towards adding an A because I think he deserves it that much even if he doesn't get it.

Help me C-Bloggers, you're my only hope.

Or I should just buy Nananana na na na naaaa's Karpat jersey.

@ghwomb, here's what a Swedish friend of ours came up with:

""Here you go:

Finnish Scoring King to Pittsburgh

The Penquins are looking to strengthen the forward position after Marian Hossa left the club. Yesterday, Miroslav Satan and Ruslan Fedotenko were acquired. Now the Finnish SM league's scoring king Janne Pesonen, 26, has been acquired with a 2 year contract. Terms will be finalized within a matter of days.

"It looks like everything has been settled. Of course, I am very
satisfied. To play in the NHL has always been a dream of mine and with my success at Kärpät possibilities have opened up, " Pesonen told radiomega (Finnish radio).

Pesonen won the Finnish league's scoring title last winter: 34 goals
and 44 assists in 56 games. Unfortunately, he left the world
championship team due to injuries. While at Kärpät he won championships and was rookie of the year in 2004.

"Now I am looking forward to new challenges in my career," stated Pesonen.

The forward was of interest to a number of elite teams, none of whom
could meet his salary demands. There was even interest from the
Russian clubs, including Lada Togliatti. Instead, Janne Pesonen will be the next piece needed to complete the puzzle for the rebuilding of the forwards.

Finnish sniper to Pittsburgh

Janne Pesonen agreed to terms with the franchise.

It looks like Pittsburgh Penguins get yet another forward added to their line up. Yesterday they signed Miroslav Satan and Ruslan Fedotenko, now they have agreed to the terms for a contract for two years with the Janne Pesonen, 28, who had most points in SM-Liiga. The deal is expected to be annonced by the club in the next few days.

- It looks like everything is done now. Of course I'm really pleased, since playing in the NHL has always been a dream for me. And because it has gone so well for me here in Kärpät, a possibility have opened up for me. Says Pesonen to

Pesonen who was the player with most points last winter, with 34 goals and 55 assists in 56 games, but got left out of the Finnish World Cup squad because of an injury. He has won four championships with Kärpät, along with the rookie of the year award in 2004.

-I look forward to new challenges in my career, says Pesonen.

Earlier the forward reportedly was an interesting name for a number of clubs in the Swedish Elite Series, but none of them could meet his salary demands. Also some russian clubs were interested, first and foremost Lada Togliatti.

Instead Janne Pesonen becomes the next piece in the puzzel in Pittsburghs heavily rebuilt forwards cast.

Try riding it an average of 10 times a day, 6 days a week, all summer long.

I became numb to the ride to the point I have no desire to ride it anymore.

We used to play games to see who got to ride with any girls who needed a partner...we usually had to give an announcement looking for someone else who was a single in line so they could ride together...we'd give the person in the booth 'driving' a 'signal' to NOT give the announcement and hop in on the 'inside' so that they would 'squish' us.

The Pens are playing a Saturday evening game at the Igloo. Anticipating a victory and much during/post-game beer drinking, you decide to go to Saturday afternoon mass at the Catholic church across from the Marriott so that you can sleep in Sunday morning.

Do you wear your Satan jersey to mass?

Does your answer change if you are at a church farther away from the Igloo?

Does your answer change if it is not game day?

Does your answer change if you are a priest?

wasting time by watching old NHL commercials today.

Funny commercials (7m30s)

one of my favorites from the old NHL on FOX days

old Kolzig commercial

the old "When I do this, pass me the puck" Jagr/UN commercial

Nike "game goes off-ice"

and probably favorite, the old Powerade Kovalev commercial, which for some reason that ESPN d-bag Stuart Scott in it more than Kovy.

@others about my Gildo comment. I was willing to disassociate Hossa with that song since I'll admit it was catchy. But after hearing the euro-awesomeness that'll learn the name of that Finnish group someday, it was the nail in the coffin that was needed to distance myself from that song. Oops, another dead reference. Sorry Rex, didn't mean that.

So Detroit wants to steal HossaHossaHossaHossa? Whatev, take it. We're used to your second rate city taking our leftovers, and this even goes outside of hockey.

Leyland? Check
Van Slyke? Check
Gibson? Check. (FFS, you took him back a 2nd time, and for what? Gibby was so slow with Tigers v2.0 that he made Sid Bream look like a track star.)
Conklin? Check
Robitaille? Check
Lang? Check
Hossa? Check, along with Rex Gildo, check check.

Do I need to go on?

Speaking of Rex, should we tell the Wings that Rex (Mark Recchi) is still a free agent?

It had the potential to be played 21 times in 3 I don't know if that technically counts.

go to a sporting goods store that sells the type of jersey you're looking to get. try one on for feel & size and then order accordingly. [IMO]
especially if you're considering buying a new RBK jersey as opposed to the looser, older model CCM's & RBK's.

The Penguins have agreed to a two-year contract with free-agent forward Matt Cooke.

The deal is worth $1.2 million per season.

Cooke, who will be 30 on Sept. 7, is 5 foot 11, 205 pounds and is an accomplished agitator and penalty-killer.

His addition will help to offset the departure of left winger Jarkko Ruutu, who signed with Ottawa and once was Cooke's teammate with the Canucks.

Cooke had 10 goals, 13 assists and 91 penalty minutes in 78 games with Vancouver and Washington last season.

The Penguins apparently still are working to finalize a contract with left winger Janne Pesonen, a free agent from Finland.

Pesonen, 26, told a Finnish radio station yesterday that he intends to sign a one-year contract to play, but the agreement still is a work in progress. Pesonen also has received offers from teams in Russia and Switzerland.

How? By not being man enough to make your own decisions (because that 1 yr contract reads like this: agent greed, make more money in 2009)? By instead of being a leader on a contender, he chooses to be a tag-along on a team that he couldn't beat.

That only shows the character that he has. Look over his career. When he was asked to step up and be a leader, he failed to do so. You can have him, and when he bails next year because "he is looking for the best opportunity to win a cup", and he fails to re-sign, you can come back here and have this same discussion.

Again, you can have our leftovers. We'll sign those players that WANT to be here.
