For your viewing pleasure - Sketchbookblog!
**************************************
This is where it all started. Yep. On a Post-It.

The original idea was to have him in full uniform:

When developing a character, I usually do a bunch of loose sketches, then
refine those into character sheets. Part of the character sheet includes
creating a base model to use rather than redraw the body over and over.
Once the model was finished, adding anything more would have been a waste:

Bad ass.
The next few images are from a failed attempt at making a
ConkBlock Penguin. His legs were too short to make pads look right:

Here are some more jobbers that never made the cut:

The start of the playoffs... the original thought was to make a banner for gameday posts:

It was quite a surprise to blink and be up 3-0 on the Sens. Plans changed very quickly when the call for the sweep pic came over.
Luckily, this sketch was available for the quick modification and turnaround
(the broom and helmets were added in Photoshop):

The motivation for creating the Pensblog mascot was so this illustration could be made:

me = stunned when this one started showing up in google searches:

The highlight of the New York Series(and my favorite so far):

The Philly Fat Bastard:

"My Little Flyers"
This is what happens when you let Charlie design the logos:

Firstly, I would like to say Stephen S. is amazing!!! You are soooo talented!!
Thanks for sharing.
seriously, stephen AMAZING.
next tattoo, i am hiring you and your pen!
great work Stephen. gotta love the Philly Fat Bastard and Rocky KO sketches.
i am totally jealous, i never got past learning how to draw what looked like a circle
Dude. Awesome. Ridiculously so.
St. Stephen
Woooooooooooo
f'ing awesome
SteveS = mad skills
I cannot wait for the day when I open Pensblog and that last image you shared is at the top of the page.
amazing work.
what are you using to draw them on the pc?
Holy freaking crap. These things should be painted onto center ice.
Well, maybe not the sketches, but the finished products. YOU KNOW WHAT I MEANT.
Echoing Coffeytalk's statements, if I ever decide to get a tattoo, I know the first person I'm going to for a design.
Absolutely unreal.
Stephen, do you have any idea how much cblog would be tripping over itself if you auctioned those sketches off on ebay?
And for the record, I like the Conkblock Penguin.
That sketchbook is all business. Just awesome work. What an artist.
boosh? Like the mighty boosh?
Oh, forgot to mention...your signature is badass. Nothing ruins an awesome piece of art like a lame sig in the corner.
Just had to say that your work is amazing and I'm beyond jealous. Doing very novice digital media work, looking at stuff like this makes me want to do a little practicing. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.
Fucking amazing.
That is really all there is to say about it.
Just fucking amazing....
I love that goddamn octopus drawing. I have a soft-spot for cephalpods, when they don't represent rival teams.
Your sketchbook = cleaner than mine. Especially since most of mine is full of figure sketches of people in Philly. WOOOOOO.
@Stephen S- Thank you so much for that glimpse into a creative mind at work. With GR riding toward the horizon we needed a new hero -someone who will set a standard - (not like we have any standards but you know what I mean.)
I like the Conkblock too, and the first one in the Stanley Cup Finals series-the Penguin skating beside the faceless player. WOW!
Stephen S. your artwork is phenomenal. I'm so glad you're part of the staff.
By the way, I found someone to work for me on Saturday, so I'll definitely be at Wingblog.
i'm quite the artist too but those are really good. wish i knew how to color in photos on the computer better.
bamf
Badass drawings. I have a doodle of a penguin that I can do, but. . .it's nothing like those, haha.
stilly-
you ever drank bailey's out of a shoe?
I have a man crush on Stephen S
I can appreciate just how difficult it is to illustrate a long Stanley Cup run...great work, Stephen, and here's hoping for a repeat performance next year!
Nice work, man. I still can't get past stick figures...
I got the chills going through this post.
AWESOME STUFF.
Being a goalie, I would buy a bazilion of storeblog shirt is the conkblock ever got completed.
coffey...
just playin'
OR.
my sources...are...CORRECT! :Þ
stephen s...
wicked goodblog
would there be a way of applying some of your artwork to blend in with this?
previous postblog
#10 has been donned by some pretty impressive Pens: 'Lucky' Pierre Larouche, Peter Lee, Gary Rissling, BOB ERREY!!!!!, Ron Duguay, Dan Quinn, Johnny Vermont....if it wasn't retired when Wayne Babych stopped pulling on the ol' One...Zero...how can Ronnie or Gary expect it to be ????
[Caputi]
@coffey
Some say he's half man/half fish, others say it's more of a 70/30 split. Whatever the percentage.. he's one fishy bastard.
What they said.
Cubed.
dr. turk- you can bust my chops any day.
also, thanks for the 10blog. Of course Ronnie is who I associate the number with the most. I totally forgot about Rissling, Duguay, and Quinn!
Another version...the penguin at the top....holding Figi water?
Your conks rock.
stilly!! i am sooooooo happy there is someone else out there that knows about the might boosh!!
my brother and his friend sean plan on dressing as old gregg and the crack fox for halloween this year!
@coffey
Someone posted The Legend of Old Gregg on a forum. I was hooked instantly. haha. I went and watched pretty much everything on youtube. lol.
Turk
That is the most awkward tramp stamp I have ever seen. I spot an unneeded apostrophe on "its." OOOH! There was plenty of room to tuck the butt cleavage in, too. WWJD
im with coffeytalk, would make some wicked tattoos. hells yeah.
for those looking for some entertainment tonight, stilly and i give you...
The Legend of Old Gregg
oh those crazy brits and their comedy...
also, maybe old gregg could be a potential prospect. Staff?
coffey....
hey, didn't mean for it to be bustin'....just funnin' amongst tailgatebloggers....
previous coffey talk...
I really DID play with a Bill Coffey in college [no relation to Paul Coffey]...that was NOT a ball buster by any means...
I can't remember Bob Errey sporting the #10 [I had to look some of those up in the Media Guide]...musta been when he was called up from the Baltimore Skipjacks for a cup of coffey
[sixcoffeysinonepostblog]
i've never had my lower back tattoo called a 'tramp stamp' before. it's been referred to as a bullseye, though.
wooo.
ohhhh, coffey
turk- i don't doubt your coffey.
that episode of scubs with janitor going around bustin' chops was on this afternoon. hence the frequent use of the phrase today.
joose...
awkward would be one word...
I spotted an unnecessary period at the end of the scripture....
wait..what?...that's NOT a period?
never mind.
brilliant, S.S.!
i knew a girl with a colorful tramp stamp of "in memory of dad"...
wow.

okay...you had me scratchin' my head there for a minute.
knifeWRENCH!!!!!
[For Kids! Practical AND Safe!]
how dare I post that without the youtube...
knifewrench
and now i've put that episode of scubs in the dvd player...
thanks, chocolate bear!
I love you Stephen S. Can I say that? Awesome work.
With Gary making his announcement...... I have to take my avatar in another direction............ ugh ........................................... any suggestions.................?
How rude of me... excellent work Stephen S! I made a card for my bosses daughter who has been in and out of the hospital recently, and she laughed at the picture I drew, thinking it was a joke. While it was intended to be what they didn't realize was that I ACTUALLY TRIED. That being said, your touch seems to me just simply UNREAL.
Great sketches with good energy. There is movement in your stuff even when it is a still picture. The sketches show a little more of the energy. Consider using some of the looseness in the sketches when it is a element of action in the final still picture. Thanks for sharing!
wow, that's amazing tbh!
kudos on a job well done
btw the banner sketch for gameday posts was an awesome idea tho :D
suddenly I feel this urge to start sketching myself, let's see what that produces
Anyone jobbing Fedko tonight?
Wow! You deserve to be called Pensblog Steve... really, you are awesome!
think he'll mention GR's departure w/ just a LITTLE twinkle in his eye?
Job Him.
Do it.
i got so caught up in the Fedko, i didn't even mention.....
Stephen S= Artistic God
thanks for the work, man.
and/or kakow!
Stephen S., awesome artwork. You're a great artist ...
Wooo!! I finally managed to get on the internet after getting kicked off for today! Mom = Lame ...
I'm kinda new here. Can someone explain to me who runs this site and who "Stephen" is?
Thanks
I guess this is how Picasso started.
Night.
oh Bronson.

PENS MAKE QUALIFYING OFFERS
Posted by mvuk
Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero announced today that the Pittsburgh Penguins have extended qualifying offers to the following restricted free agents: Mark Ardelan, Paul Bissonnette, Tim Brent, Patrick Ehelechner, Daniel Fernholm, Jonathan Filewich, and Ryan Stone.
Ardelan, I believe, is gonna play overseas, along with Ehelechner and Fernholm.
Really glad to see Bissonnette qualified. Bissonnette damn near made the team out of camp as an 18 or 19-year old in 2003-04, and then gradually fell out of favor with the organ-eye-zation because his attitude started to suck. When he came back this year, he still had a bit of a tenuous relationship with the Pens and they expected to be playing him to trade him elsewhere, but his attitude improved along with his play. From what Jonathan Bombulie said, the relationship has done a complete 180. If he improves next year as much as he did this past year, he could factor into the big club as a seventh d-man.
Really happy to see Stone qualified as well. I'd love to see him have a good camp because he could very well replace Malone.
That is, if he can hold off the Caputi.
Caputi.
@ dr. turkleton
you get a +4 for correcting your mistake. so, still down 6, but hang in there champ!
@Stoosh- i 2nd the Bissonnette comments. he was very impressive at the open skate this afternoon.
Ummmm...boosh rhymes with Stoosh
haha
I think Caputi is more popular than Gary Roberts.
His name is just fun to say.
If my wife had that Corinthians tatt, I'd probably be more inclined to read in bed vs listening to music in bed.
Wooooooo
Thanks everyone!
cblog = awesome
Beav=Wishing he was throwing back Railbenders with Stoosh
P.S.
Stephen S. is a legend
@ Cheese -
Was Bissonnette really loud on the ice? Every time I've seen him at camp, I always notice two things about him. First, he's louder than hell. He seemed to be communicating with the other players on the ice all the time as play was going on. And two, he was seldom really out of position. His skating isn't the greatest but he reminds of a more physical version of Scuderi because his positioning is pretty strong.
Nasreddine has reportedly signed on to play overseas next year and with Bonvie also hanging them up, Bissonnette becomes one of the "older" WB/S players. I'd love to see him come back and take over that role as one of the top veteran defensemen on that AHL club.
coffeytalk
how many tattoos do you have??
@ Beav -
Unfortunately, I need to put some Railbenders in the fridge, so it's MillerLiteblog tonight...
Shitty day at work.
Amazing, awesome work, Stephen! Thank you so much for sharing. My favorite might just be this one. His top half is all buff and badass, and his bottom half has these skinny legs and webbed flipper feet. I love it.
Someone who's good with sculpture needs to make a 3D version of that one...
This has cheered me up a lot. Throughout the whole day I would periodically remember that Gary is no longer with us, and my mood would drop -100.
@ Stoosh
It's been a varied beer kind of night. Had poker night tonight and drank 4-5 Miller Lites and a Miller High Life Light, got home and am working through the beers left over from the party at my cousin's house including Milwaukee's Best (aka Beast) Light and Ice, along with Yuengling.
Yeah I don't know what I'm doing with my life either.
Stephen you're amazing...as a fellow artist and well whatever i always love the process. In my eyes the rough stuff is better than the final product. Seein the history like that is just great art wise, but also its just a great reminder of the run this team took us on.
Nothing says I'm religious than a tattoo just above your ass ... *laughs* Imagine her talking with God and him asking about her life ... "Well, all the guys I have been with have memorized a part of the Bible ..." *laughs* That one might send me to hell ...
Why hasn't the official Pens site updated with saying Roberts not coming back next season ... then I realized they have the Tribune Review and Rossi is a writer ...

Yeah I'm real lame, but put said link together and it talks about Terry Bradshaw using steriods
@beav: I'm defending Bradshaw here (being the Steelers fan that I am) ... first off, steriods weren't illegal during his time, so how can you dock one team while it's very likely that other teams were doing the same thing. Secondly, it isn't released what type of steriod he did in fact used. It may or may not have been anabolic and he says it was used for healing. But whatev ... Bradshaw isn't my favorite Steeler all-time ...
BARRY BONDS SHOULD BE BANISHED TO THE ETERNAL FLAMES IN HELL FOR TAKING STEROIDS AND PAY FOR HIS SINS!!!
we should forgive Bradshaw because he's a STILLER and he's blue collar tough n'at.
I'm not a Stillers fan, but I wasn't trying to job them. Just thought the predominantly Pittsburgh crowd would be interested.
What do I care, I'm a Raiders fan? We could use some steroids to help this franchise
sketchbookblog is amazing. thank you for posting.
also; couldn't care less about bradshawblog. seriously.
@ IHK -
According to what I heard today, Bradshaw said the steroids he took were obtained through a doctor on the doctor's recommendation and were used to promote healing.
That kind of stuff doesn't bother me so much. Most of those guys who played in the 1970s and through the 1980s when I was growing up were probably on something.
Hell, one of my favorite players when I was a kid was Brian Bosworth. Steroids helped destroy his shoulder, which led to the end of his football career, which gave him no reason to continue using steroids, which in turn led to him shrinking down to about 200 lbs. just a few years after he retired from football.
@Flyer Hater: I knew you would make a comment about it so I did first ... how are your friends doing over there on the Insider on pittsburgh Sports? *laughs*
@Stoosh: Yeah, I heard that on ESPN because I had to sit through it with my brother who was off today ... (apparently everyone loves Melrose there and thinks he's gonna be a great coach.) No doubt tons of NFL players used steriods during that time ...
@ Beav -
Lived off the Beast when I was in college. It was about as good a beer as you could get for $8 a case.
If it was the only thing you drank that night, Beast actually wasn't bad until you started getting buzzed or pretty well toosed. At that point, I either had to stop drinking or maybe move on to something a little bit better in terms of quality. Worst case scenario was getting not just another can of Beast, but one that wasn't quite cold.
@ Stoosh
Haha, worst part about tonight, the spare beast were in my car cause I forgot about them, two Beast light, two Beast Ice... SKUNKED.
Killmenowblog
i swear to god i couldnt care less if an overrated QB from 30-some years ago was on roids or not.
Amazing work as always Stephen. I got my PC Tablet today and I'm hooking it up now! You are inspiration.
IHK, WOOOOOO
great sketches. the angry penguin face makes me think of the Joker and consequently think of jack nicholson saying "Have you ever danced with the devil by the pale moonlight?"
From one creative to another - this is great stuff.
Great post.
@ IHK -
I'm so excited for the Barry Melrose era. I really mean that. I can't wait.
I could never figure out what makes Melrose so great. The guy coached only three seasons in the NHL and he missed the playoffs in two of them after making it to the Cup Finals in the first one.
In fact, after making it to the Cup Finals in 1992-93, he didn't just miss the playoffs in 1993-94, they won only 27 of 84 games the following year.
It wasn't like he didn't have players, either. He had Gretzky and Kurri still in their early 30's. He had Robitaille and Tony Granato in their respective primes. He had a young defense led by Rob Blake and Darryl Sydor, but maybe that was the problem...his best defensemen were all kids at the time.
Now he's going into a situation where he's going to have a top-heavy offensive team (Vinny, St. Louis and Stamkos), little depth beyond the top line, a thin defensive corps and a relatively untested goaltending tandem. And he's come back to league that has much better overall coaching and a greater emphasis on systems than ever before.
Like I said, I can't wait.
aw man, shaq got his deputy badges taken away because of his freestylin'. phoenix is no longer safe.
@Stoosh: It's going to be interesting to say the least and I think Stamkos might get to ease into his role because all the attention won't be on him, but Lecavilier and Melrose. I think he's fun to watch because he's so crazy, but I'm not sure how qualified as a coach he's gonna be. He knows the NHL and all, but it still seems weird that a team offered him a job.
@jefe: Also, heard about that ... Shaq dissing Kobe is hilarious. Probably it's more funny to me because I can't watch basketball (at least pro) and I hate Kobe. He annoys the hell out of me ...
Someone needs to take these honey roasted peanuts away from me. Seriously, I'm gonna gain 10 lbs eating them. Completelyofftopicblog.
wow. absolutely amazing. i think about half of those were used as desktop backgrounds for me
seriously amazing stuff from Stephen S.
the wife and i are watching season 6 of the west wing
electionblog. man i love this show
im hungry now. theres nothing to eat. and definitely no peanuts.
im starving for hockey news!
anyway, at least GRoberts didnt toy with us by "testing the free agent market on july 1st", a la Rex Hossa. he just ripped the Band-Aid™ off quickly. even tho it still hurts..
Kah-poooooo-teeeee
This is what I would call good news for the future of Pittsburgh yard sales.
i was just gonna post that one Stoosh. right on!
that's awesome, I can't draw shit. I see your stuff all over the web on hockey sites (i.e. all over nhl connect)
Like I said last night, Free Candy is staying.
what HOSSA might be thinking:
Shero, you got to let me know
Should I stay or should I go?
If you say that you are mine
I’ll be here ’til the end of time
So you got to let me know
Should I stay or should I go?
i read on kuklas korner that toronto is buying out darcy tuckers contract. Thoughts anyone?
The only thing I even know about Darcy Tucker is that Ruutu beat the shit out of him.
well yeah but you have to give the man credit, he fought pretty damn well. but maybe he could fill in for bugsy in front? cant imagine him being more than 2 million after putting up less than 35 points.
I don't like Tucker... but he could be the kind of guy that Shero would go for. All that I know is it would be a weird conversation between him and Ruutu. "Hey, remember when I caved your head in?"
...GodIHATEtheClashBlog!
im sure it wouldnt be nearly as awkward as the conversation that took place between tucker and michael peca in 2006. in the 02 playoffs tucker hip checked peca and blew out pecas mcl and acl ruining pecas season. then in 06 they became teammates..
How can you hate The Clash? Blasphemy.
Goodnight.
oh and this should help you like him more.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_aq3WlwPJM
anyone that has done something like that to a flyer is someone id like to have on my team.
I promise that I wouldn't hate the Clash if they didn't suck and just make it so easy.
Tucker still doesn't tickle my fancy (not many things do) even if he killed the entire Flyers Franchise with a thundering check. I'm glued to internet news about the pens signing players though. Tucker isn't a top pick of mine but he certainly isn't the lowest either. Looking at the LGP forums they seem to think we can only get guys like Todd Fedoruk (Yucky ex Flyer) and Jeff Finger... c'mon!
sooooooooo.
see yinz later.
I fell asleep at midnight-ish, woke up at 3:00, and can't get back to sleep. Wooooooooooo. Sup cblog? I don't think anyone is here. . .
Read the most recent article about Caputi. The kid is a beast. I can't wait to see him in our lineup.
Me=stunned.
Stephen S., you are one talented individual.
