THE SEASON IN THE PENSBLOG
We've spent the last week going through posts; one month every day.
We truly can't believe how much has transpired over these past 9 months.
We had no expectations for this thing when we started it in 2006,
but somewhere down the line it has become our lives.
The 2007-08 season was a ride we will not soon forget.
We can't believe how much stuff went down.
And we feel compelled to document it.
In February, we unveiled the Pensblog Storeblog. [ Link to Post ]
For the month of March, it was the top-seller on the CafePress website.
We had 1,000,000 visitors to the site from September 2006 to April 2008.
From April 2008 to June 2008, we've had 650,000.
Sick. Thanks to everyone for checking the site out.
Over the course of the blog, this:

Became This:

And Has Evolved Into This:

Unless we can somehow incorporate naked women into the logos,
there's not much more room for improvement.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS OF THE SEASON
*** THE WWGRD MOVEMENT ***
Back in October, with the help of everyone here, the WWGRD phenomenon took off.
[ The Origin ]
Our laziness resulted in titling a post "WWGRD" for no reason after an obsession over Gary Roberts spilled into training camp.
[ Jason Strushensky's Photoshop ]
The comments section in this post is where it took off.
[ The Voting Process ] [ The Press Conference ]
We ended up sending out about 700 wristbands in the first run.
Following Roberts' performance in Game One of the Senators series, we sold 1,000 more.
And just as WWGRD wristbands started to fade.
Sam Liberto sent us this:
and it became another beast of its own:

We hate to sound like a Lifetime movie, but we will most likely never experience something like WWGRD ever again.
If we do experience it again, we are forcing it.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
*** STUNNED PICTURES ***
As the video shows, stunned pictures became a beast of their own.
The funny thing is, we never actually asked for them. It just started happening.
We started the trend at a game in late October against Montreal:
And then there was no stopping it.

*** ANTHEM PICS ***
Over the course of the season, we received 345 anthem pics.
Unreal.
Props go to [Thomes08] for starting the trend back in the first game of the season.
An away game, no less.
The last time an anthem pic didn't come in was March 1st in Ottawa.
:::::::::::::::::::
*** C-BLOG CITY ***
Early in the season, we were moderating comments.
It was not a good time. Conversations were delayed, and there was no rhythm.
Eventually, we were able to take off moderation, but the catch was that we had to make people register a Blogger account.
As with any other changes we make here, we over-analyze how it will affect the site.
Oddly enough, comment numbers grew after change.
95% of the inspiration for what we do around here comes out of C-Blog.
Player nicknames have started in there and turned into insanity.
They gave us the greatness that is ConkBlock and USS Hal Gill.
You can Commit To The Stoosh if you'd like.
:::::::::::::::::::
*** STEPHEN S ***
Fittingly this emailed arrived to us shortly after Christmas:
Stephen Slesinski has since taken over our world as far as graphics are concerned.
We have added him to the Staff and he has some unreal stuff in the works.
Starting soon, he will have a weekly column looking for some ideas, some photoshop tutorials, and some other shit called Artistblog.
And we also need some help in naming our Penguin in the graphic.
*** THE NHL'S FIRST HOMOSEXUAL BLOGGER ***
( If you don't count Bill from [Abel to Yzerman]...just kidding Bill we love you.)
Amidst accusations that we were homophobic, we acquired the services of Pensblog Charlie,
a homosexual who agreed to screen all homosexual comments and pictures on the site.
He made his debut on [November 5, 2007.]
*** MEDIA MENTIONS/APPEARANCES ***
We touch ourselves at night.
But it has nothing to do with being mentioned by people with microphones.
But whenever it happens, it's pretty cool.
The only mention we actually heard was when Steigerwald dropped the site during a game.
Everyone around here at the site spread high fives.
We started getting mentions on DEADSPIN later in the season.
During the playoff run, WDVE and KISS were sending love our way.
We even got to appear on NPR.
But our happiest moment was when Ruutu said Free Candy:
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
*** ENEMIES GAINED ***
"You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life."
-Winston Churchill
That's a quote we live by.
Throughout the year, we have picked up some great enemies.
[ Acid Queen ] wanted her link taken down from our site
because she didn't want to be associated with the immaturity around here.
The rivalry with [ The700Level ] was all business back in December and January.
We have made amends. Good guys over there.
[ Don Brennan ]
This writer from the Ottawa Sun wanted someone to break Crosby's ankle.
Joke.
[ LGP ]
Sadly, we quotemine on LGP to find the most outrageous opinions made by Pens fans.
We are not ashamed.
[ Dump and Chase ]
This guy jobbed Snoopy Jode back in October. That was not a good idea.
[ John Dellapina ]
What a jobber.
In the playoffs, we tried to crash [ Sens Fan in Toronto's ] server.
[ Blueshirt Bulletin ] reaches a level of homerism unrivaled on the internet.
[ Chad Herman ] unleashed his janitorial wisdom on WWGRD.
[ The Orange Crush ] kidnapped Charlie.
Thankfully, Charlie surpassed 1,000 friends on Facebook just in time.
Finally, we all remember the late, great commenter RGB.
But once we started getting pictures of him, his friends, and their wives,
we started putting them in the background of photoshops.
They haven't been heard of since.

*** UBER-POSTS ***
[ The Day After Tomorrow. PENS WIN. ]
Our game recaps were beyond mud all season, but this recap righted the ship.
[ The NHL Mascots ]
There were some weird ones in there.
[ Cathedrals of Hockey. Our Second Homes ]
This was great putting together.
It takes roughly an hour to load.
[ 1990 And Beyond: The Penguin Goaltender ]
Another beast that was fun to put together.
[ Law & Order: Pensblog Unit -- MAF vs. Conklin ]
Mistrial.

We still don't feel like we captured everything that went on during the season.
But whatev.
This post officially puts the 2007-2008 season in its final resting place.
We can't wait to begin anew.

We'd like to offically announce that we have come to terms with Justin of [Every Facet of The Game], who will give us a fresher voice, and another set of eyes.

Fuck YES
yeah, I'll say it, staff jobbed me out of the #1 spot. Wouldn't be the FIRST time that happened. ;)
seriously, what a recap.
i need some new dockers after this one
Beautiful.
Fifth?
I feel like I missed out on so much arriving at this blog late in the season and only posting during the postseason. Apparently I took for granted the hard work and awesomeness of others. I apologize.
I do need to sleep at some point but. . .eh.
I need my new Edge shave gel to shave off the beard of awesome that just gave me.
Great stuff.

excellent end to an excellent season, guys! makes waking up at 5:30 after an insomnia night just a little bit easier.
I'm always committed to the stoosh
and to tPB
do it!!!!!!!!
amazing job tpb staff! i caught up with the pensblog early in the season, it became the first read of the day and hasn't given up that throne since. tpb made an amazing season just that much more fun.
i've pimped the blog out to anyone who's even remotely a hockey fan, pens fan or not, it's just that good.
thanks for the great job guys, keep it up.
treat yourselves to a pair of dockers!
go pens!
Ruutu commenting on free candy is still life changing

That's freaking awesome!
Woooooo!
Well great job all season long guys. I found out about this site right around the end of October and it has become a daily ritual that my wife hates.
This season is now officially over and its time to bring on 2008-2009. I don't normally post only because I leave all the jobbing to everyone else, but I've enjoyed reading everyone's comments and look forward to next year.
2008-2009 Pittsburgh Penguins are the Stanley Cup Champions, you heard it here first!

You're probably all right now just waiting for Stillers training camp, counting down the days before Smizik writes his first column about how Batch should be the starter because he's local.
Or maybe it's because Mike Greghomo isn't finished touching himself from his little 5 year old outburst from last night.

I think I've mentioned this before, but since we're all about the Pensblog/c-blog love today, my family back in Erie loves this site. And not just Moms and Pops Stoosh...I'm talking aunts and uncles and cousins, too.
The best thing about looking back at all of these things is thinking about what new stuff we'll come up with moving forward. New season will bring all sorts of new inside jokes, references, nicknames, etc. It's going to be a blast going through all this again.
You're not going to make me feel guilty about looking forward to Football season Hater.. Bring on da Stillers.
@stoosh
I'm a systems analyst and I do mostly database work in Oracle. Every time that I have to give the COMMIT command, I get this hankerin to check cblog. I blame you. haha.
Great stuff. 2007-2008 was a great season. The Pens and TPB were both on their respective games.
Now, when are we getting some news recaps? I need some Wendy Bell action.
@ fh - joey d reference. solid.
football season doesn't start until training camp for me. i will probably be going with the tiger = dick thing for a while.
why don't we name the penguin jagoff?
any word if tpb has negotiated with any fa's? there's been a lack of updates, it's kind of disappointing.
I thought you had to wait until July 1 to negotiate with free agents. Perhaps tpb should be turning We Bleed Teal in for tampering with Hacksaw.
@nathan
I'm not entirely sure that the motivational blog pics are part of the NHL's CBA. I'm not sure they had a voice in the negotiations.
it has become a daily ritual that my wife hates
Add me to that list as well!
You're probably all right now just waiting for Stillers training camp
Either that or catching up on the months of work that piled up during the playoffs while we were all in C-blog instead of doing our jobs! WOOOOOOOO!
@dan
Tiger is indeed a dick. I hope he crashes and burns today.
@ Stilly -
It's always all my fault. At least that's what my parents used to tell me. haha
Seriously, I never thought I'd say this after the way I bash them here from time to time, but I'm actually really looking forward to the Steelers this season.
I really soured on the NFL over the last two seasons and I think part of that was due to the absolute barrage of Steelers coverage that we got here. Some of it was to be expected because of the Super Bowl win, but even that went way over what I expected. Couple that with all the other off-the-field crap (Pacman Jones, Terrell Owens, Spygate, etc) that seemed to overshadow everything that was happening on the field, and I just had a really hard time getting into the NFL the last two seasons.
But I figured if Steelers coverage just went away for a while, my interest would return and I think that's what happened. Steelers coverage took a decided back seat for most of the last couple of months as Pittsburgh seemed to be all about the Pens, which was fine with me.
I'm looking forward to the Steelers, along with Pitt football and also seeing what happens with the Pirates the rest of the year (new management is doing things differently, and I can't wait until McCutchen comes up).
Ryan Malone?
what a season
why didn't the mellon arena recap mention the mick foley hell in a cell match? that was EPIC
Stoosh, I've had the same feelings. I've basically not watched more than 5 minutes of one episode of Sportscenter in over a year, I don't watch any local news, so basically I'm getting no outside info on the Steelers.

@ fh - solid. beautiful bean footage. still pissed i wasn't there after all these years.
BTW;
I am one of the 650,000 that "visited" the site in the months of April-June. I liked it so much i become a regular, and not a visitor. So glad i did and now its a daily habit.
Thank You Pb

650,000 hits=inflated number
It was probably just BNG66 hitting the refresh button over and over again while being paid under the table by Adam and Derek.
WOOOO
@stoosh
I'm pretty excited about this season. After picking up Sweed and Mendenhall in the draft, the depth at skill positions looks crazy. I hope they can piece together a half decent offensive line. It would also be nice if Aaron Smith comes back and settles the D down. After he was out last year the guys up front had a rough go of things.
I think that not being in Pittsburgh and thus not being constantly barraged with Steeler news has kept my perspective fresh. I'd probably get jaded too if it was 24/7 coverage about the same shit everyday.
@dan
If that happens, I'll even volunteer to whittle a hand out of wood for him.
Flyer Hater = jobber.
I like the effort son, but you gotta get more creative. haha.
@ Flyer Hater -
I can't watch ESPN for anything NFL-related anymore...not after the three things I mentioned earlier - Pacman Jones, Terrell Owens and Spygate.
Pacman Jones made me like football less because people like him are associated with the sport.
The Terrell Owens stuff died down after he made it to Dallas, but towards the end of his Eagles tenure, I thought they were going to rename Sportscenter the "Sal Paolantonio Show"; I swear I think the guy was living at the bottom of Owens's driveway that summer.
But the kicker was Spygate. That's actually what drove me away from the NFL last year. I don't think ESPN has ever milked a more than they did with Spygate. I thought steroids in baseball was bad, but the Spygate coverage just seemed so much more over the top.
If I'm looking for NFL talk on television, I'll stick with the NFL Network for now.
its the Job in cblog that makes this post that much better. can't stay THANKS enough to both the staff and cblog. i have a new favorite website.
More importantly, I even convinced the wife to get NHL Center Ice next year which never would have happened without the inspiration from cblog. Yes.
08-09. Do it.
the winter classic recap had 64 comments.
yoi
What a recap.
As we all wax nostalgic, I'll add my tPB story to the list. I can't remember exactly when I found the site, but I do remember some of the offseason posts, so I suspect it was late last season. Anyway, I always read the posts, but never even looked at the comments since I'm used to worthless comments on sites like ESPN or any number of other blogs. What a mistake!
The first time I interacted with anyone on the site was an e-mail to the staff. Someone jobbed them for saying people exhaled carbon monoxide and some kid got carbon monoxide poisoning when the crowd all exhaled at once. They corrected their "mistake" on the front page and I wrote in to inform them that people do, in fact, exhale a small amount of carbon monoxide along with carbon dioxide and that the joke was even funnier if you consider how little each person puts out.
Anyway, that line of discussion lead to me finally checking out the comments. I finally started posting in them right around the time the switch to logging in came about and the rest is history.
@ stilly - if mangold can stay healthy he is a good center. mahan actually was a decent guard if i remember correctly too. still have a bad feeling about this year though.
I went back and looked at the "Pensblog Sticker Book Scans" page, way back on December 16, 2006.
Nine comments.
Most interesting was the last one from Laura Von Awesome...
"Anyway, Gary Roberts is GOD..."
Keep in mind that this was roughly three months before Roberts ever pulled on a Penguins jersey.
Did anyone else think that when the story broke that the Patriots had filmed the Steelers' signals in the 2002 AFC Championship game that Kordell would've blown the game somehow anyway?
I just want to say that I want to murder people who stick the suffix "-gate" onto any scandal. It's lazy and completely retarded. Watergate got its name because THAT'S THE FUCKING NAME OF THE COMPLEX. Under today's construction, it should be Watergategate. Anyone who does that with subsequent scandals both real and inflated deserves to be eaten by bears.
It was probably just BNG66 hitting the refresh button over and over again while being paid under the table by Adam and Derek.
WTF??? I was doing the same thing and I didn't get paid!!!
Some things that I learned from the media this weekend:
-Tiger Woods apparently invented golf.
-Tiger Woods is awesome.
-Tiger Woods has been chosen by the gods, whatever that means.
-If not for Tiger Woods, golf would have gone the way of Lasertag.
-When Tiger Woods dies, golf will die too.
-Tiger Woods, Tiger Woods, Tiger Woods, Tiger Woods, Tiger Woods, Tiger Woods.
-Apparently, he was playing through 'unbearable' pain, even though he could walk.
-Every time he hits the ball, kittens and puppies and starving children are saved just by him playing the game.
jyo, you were swindled, my friend.
deserves to be eaten by bears
Well, nathangate, they are the #1 threat to America!
@dan
The absense of a consistent tackle worries me the most. It'll be interesting to see if Marvel Smith and Willie Colon can get the job done.
Indeed, nathangate.
When Tiger Woods dies, golf will die too.
Sounds like motivation for an assassin. Just sayin...
There's still time for Phil Mickelson to bash Tiger's knee with his driver, leaving Tiger crumpled in a ball sobbing "WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY? WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?"
@ Dan -
I still think this is going to be a bit of a transition year for the Steelers, too.
I think they're still a bit between eras right now...some of the older impact veterans from the end of the Cowher/Super Bowl team are gone or are on their way out. Faneca's gone. Haggans is gone. I think we're seeing the end of the Steelers careers of guys like Farrior, Foote (who sounds like he's losing his job to Timmons), Deshea Townsend. Not sure what happens to Marvel Smith after this season. I even think Hines Ward is closer to the end of his Steeler days than a lot of people realize; this is going to be his 11th season in the league and I'm not sure how receptive he's going to be to possibly taking a back seat to Santonio Holmes and Limas Sweed.
I'm really interested to see what guys like Mendenhall and Sweed do. Not expecting huge things from Sweed because he's just going to be a rookie, but I can't wait to see Mendenhall.
Speaking of bears, there was a rash of bear sightings in the Richmond area a few weeks ago, then someone ran it over on I-95 and killed it.
wilsmith, in all fairness, a pretty good number of c-bloggers went to that game I believe. Still, that is surprising.
flyerhater, i could've sworn you said you were from the Philly area back when we were doing geographyblog...
I'm really starting to like these Bucs, Stoosh. I liked when Randy Johnson and Doug Meintkewiecz had their dust up, and after the game Johnson said if it would have escalated he'd be out of baseball and Dougie ballplayer would be on a stretcher. Meinty fresh shot back that he's been on a stretcher before, but he thought Johnson's been out of baseball for the last three years, adding that he's so mentally weak that he let New York beat him down. I'm glad they picked him up. Our starting pitching usually starts to get into a groove this time of year, I'm hoping there's some good ball to watch until training camps start.
Staff, thanks for putting these recaps together, and I can't believe how much time yinz put into this place.
Great recap staff! I also was one of the folks that discovered tPb sometime in the season and never left. I can't wait to go through a whole season with youse guys, esp. since you're pretty cool with those of us in the XX group. :)
But back to the subjects of the weekend, I want to see a story about how Tiger's Stepford Wife was caught sleeping with some lesser golfer or even some random dude that hates golf.
@stoosh
I really think that Sweed will make an immediate impact. Especially since Roethlisberger specifically asked for a big reciever. I'd bet on seeing a lot of three wide sets with Sweed at Split End, Holmes at Flanker, and Ward in the slot. I think Ward's tenure will hinge on how willing he is to go over the middle from the slot.
@ stoosh - i agree 100%. my head exploded when they gave giant douche max starks that contract too. 7 million for a bum. awesome. i wonder if hines will go out as a steeler or leave very bitterly. our draft worried me too. we had a good draft, but we didn't address our needs. it was an odd draft. i didn't like one team's draft this year at all.
@chica
My guess is that his wife will get caught at a club with Geno and Tiger will break down and weep.
I'm totally gimping that shit when I get home from work.
Amazing post again. I'm glad I've been here all season. It's been one hell of a ride.
Nameblog: I suck at creativity. Something sticks out about 'Hank', though.
Welcome to tPB, Justin.
Also, did anyone see the Mark Madden article in the Beaver Valley Times? I'll assume it's our same lovable, fired friend. He says about Malkin: "Maybe the Penguins trade Malkin.
It’s not time to run Malkin out of town just yet, but he does cause some annoyance. He either won’t learn English or too often refuses to use it. Manufactured illness excuses aside, Malkin disappeared during the Stanley Cup final and seemed hard-pressed to match the passion that playing for the sacred chalice created in the rest of the dressing room. He reportedly told management that Sergei Gonchar staying long-term is a condition of him staying long-term and while the Penguins would be nuts to trade Gonchar anyway, Malkin has zero right to make that demand.
Most frustrating, Malkin has an extra gear that he finds only when Crosby isn’t dressed. That helped the Penguins survive Crosby’s ankle injury this past season, but Crosby in the lineup is obviously a good thing and shouldn’t cause any malaise when it comes to Malkin’s performance.

Lame. He's a joke.
I seriously shut my monitor off to go to bed one minute before this was posted. LAME.
Somebody ran over a bear? What the hell were they driving, Gravedigger?
Tiger Woods is no Bill Brasky...
I think it was last season I read that Hines doesn't plan on playing out his contract. I give him two more seasons, if that.
CONGRATULATIONS on a fine season, Pensblog!
...and thanks, cbloggers, for mentioning MST3K, UFO, Sprockets, Brusters, Nathangate, and BEARS!!! in the past 48 hours or so...
Time to start brushing up on our Swedish for the opening game of the season; "bita mej" = "bite me."
Original Nathan, for some reason every time I read your name I get hungry for hot dogs...
Gateway High School Newspaper>Beaver County Times
It was probably a semi that hit it. The section of 95 where the bear got run over is a 55 zone and nobody observes that speed limit. Ever.
I feel sorry for the bear, but that had to be incredible to see.
I miss Wasabi Funyuns. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
Gee, I wonder why. The problem with Virginia is the general lack of Italians, Germans, and Jews, so you can't get any decent sausages or hot dogs, both kosher and non-kosher.
Have to look entirely too hard to find good pizza here, too. But it's out there. Courtesy of people who moved here from New York.
"Brasky drank a full glass of liquid LSD with his eggs. Then he slept for 8 months straight. When he woke he rubbed his eyes and said, 'All in all, I prefer gin.'"
should we start steelerblog?
I really think that Sweed will make an immediate impact.
Don't expect too much. WRs rarely adjust to the NFL and make a big impact in their first year. There are always exceptions, but most of them struggle. RBs make the transition much better, so it only makes sense to expect Mendenhall to have a better first year. Meh, is it hockey season yet?
What an awesome season to look back on.
I may have missed this somewhere, but did WXPI ever end up crediting that Sykora photoshop?
It’s not time to run Madden out of town just yet, but he does cause some annoyance.
I went ahead and fixed that sentence.
@ jyo - last year was a great wr draft class, and not many of them did much of anything. i wouldn't expect sweed to do much for a year or two myself either.
@ da - i wondered the same thing myself.
@ tiger woods - you're still a dick.
"Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky took me out to go get a drink with him? We go off looking for a bar and we can't find one. Finally Brasky takes me to a vacant lot and says, 'Here we are.' We sat there for a year and a half — until sure enough, someone constructs a bar around us. Well, the day they opened we ordered a shot, drank it, and then burned the place to the ground. Brasky yelled over the roar of the flames, 'Always leave things the way you found 'em!'"

Any production Sweed gives us > Cedric Wilson's output. I can see 4-500 yards and 2-3 td's.
O.N., The Original Hot Dog shop in Oakland and Nathan's Famous.
I once saw him scissor kick Angela Landsbury!
Big recievers generally do well right away. Marques Colston and Roy Williams are two that come to mind.
Recievers with size are a commodity. It's absolutely easier for RB's to come in and do well, but I'm still going to hold out hope that Sweed comes out with guns blazing. The offensive potential (provided the O-Line is decent) is endless.
The Steelers have some SICK weapons, but games are won and lost on the line of scrimmage. At least that's what our OL coach told us.
@ stilly - i played the line. that's a common saying. it's bullshit to an extent though.
@dan
I played the line too. It was a little more true for us because we passed maaaaybe 6 times a game. Our team was built on power running while I was there.
Oh and if the Steelers need options at center, I'm available. I'll just sit here and wait for the call. haha.
@ stilly - we went through so many systems it was ridiculous. i am available too. i am 6'5, 190. i might be what they call "undersized" though. i did play tackle though.
@ Jonny V -
The Mientkewicz-Johnson thing was absolutely classic. I think the Mientkewicz signing was a terrific one just because of what he brings to the clubhouse. I know that stuff can be a little overrated at times, but he seems to really like this team and the town.
I like what the new front office is doing so far. You can see a definite difference over the way things were run under the McClatchy-Littlefield tandem.
They bit the bullet on the Morris issue and they quickly cut their losses with Kim back in spring training when it was clear that wouldn't work.
They seem to be evaluating their personnel differently under this new regime. They made it a point to lock up a couple of key pieces of their core with Snell and Sanchez. They made a commitment to McLouth - something Littlefield and Tracy never seemed willing to do because he didn't fit their model (consider that at one point, McLouth was behind Duffy, Rajai Davis and Nyjer Morgan).
And the draft was a COMPLETE 180 from anything they ever did under Littlefield. That alone went a long way to convince me that maybe something is different with this organization now.
I'll be interested to see what happens over the next month, because that'll dictate what happens with Bay, Nady and possibly some other guys like Jack Wilson, Damaso Marte, John Grabow, Adam Laroche, etc. I think at some point, they need to deal either Bay or Nady to help replenish the farm system a little bit.
I would rather see Nady go, or both if they get a fair return. And I also like what they did in the draft this year, this was in the P-G yesterday:
The Pirates' draft was rated second-best in Major League Baseball by Scout.com, receiving the only A grade in the pool. The Detroit Tigers received the only A-plus.
"This is the year Pirates fans have been waiting for," the Web site wrote. "There is perhaps no other team that landed two more impressive talents with their top two picks. If Tanner Scheppers is indeed healthy, he and Pedro Alvarez are two of the premier talents in this draft class. ... Beyond just the elite talent at the front of the class, the depth that Pittsburgh added really is remarkable."
Two other publications that regularly evaluate drafts, Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus, will wait until the fall for overall grades.
Baseball America's John Manuel did weigh in with this in an online chat: "The Pirates were as aggressive as they could be for drafting college players. Alvarez might have been the top player on many draft boards, and Scheppers was a potential first-10-overall pick before his late-season shoulder injury. His Fresno State teammate, Justin Wilson, came on strong late to lead the Bulldogs into super-regional play. Robbie Grossman also had first-two-rounds aspirations, so the Pirates really went for it Thursday."
Bill Brasky gave a handjob to a manta ray.
They use Brasky's foreskin as a tarp when it rains at Yankee Stadium.
wow. great recap...
when's october? Oh, right , October. :'(
Brasky hated Mexicans, and he was half Mexican. He also hated irony.

that's a ridiculous question.
I don't think it's possible for me not to laugh for 5 whole minutes whenever I see Mighty Morphin' Power Penguins. Possibly the stupidest most hilarious thing I've seen in a while.
Yeah I know a lot were there, but it's still funny that thats all the more comments there were. 90+ today and we're only at noon. The recap was also put up late the next day, so the usuals should have been around.
for comparisons sake, the recap of the next game, against the Leafs when Malkin had his HT, ~50 comments.
what growth.
Sorry for this but I couldn't help but laugh. This was a link for a sports page on MSN:

anyone have any advice for traveling to dc for a concert at the igloo south (verizon center) this sunday?
Fantastic recap!! It has been a great walk down memory lane. While I don't get to check in much on weekends, tPb and c-blog keep me from shoving pencils through my eyeballs pretty much every day at work, lest I perish from shear boredom. Not only is the writing top-notch, the pictures, photoshops and Steven S' drawing serve only to complement that excellence! Well done, boys!
@ Jonny V -
For as much as I like Bay, I'd be fine if they trade both him and Nady.
I have a hard time thinking they're going to extend Bay after next season; prior to his subpar 2007, Bay was expected to command Vernon Wells money and if his stock has dropped, it hasn't fallen far enough to make him reasonably affordable to the Pirates (unless Nutting is planning on pulling a Mike Ilitch and injecting a crapload of money into the baseball team).
Huntington is facing a monumental task of rebuilding the farm system because Littlefield left it an absolute mess. Prior to this draft, it was nothing but mediocre arms, too many players too old for their respective levels and no bats in the lower levels that project to have any sort of significant impact at the Major League level.
If it gives them a chance to expedite the replenishing of the farm system, I'd be more than happy to see Bay and Nady shipped out.
Mark Madden shoots himself in the ass today in a Beaver County Times column.
It starts off really well, then goes rapidly downhill when he hits this bit of inanity:
If Malkin feels the need to be THE star somewhere, the Penguins should at least think about accommodating him.
The Los Angeles Kings don’t compete with the Anaheim Ducks. In the Kings’ minds, they compete with the NBA’s Lakers, and are star-struck accordingly. If Shero could strike a deal for Malkin that fetched winger Dustin Brown, defenseman Jack Johnson, a couple more NHL regulars and a first-round pick or two, it’s a move he should at least ponder.
The team that surrenders the best player rarely wins a deal. But when the Quebec Nordiques swapped Eric Lindros to Philadelphia in 1992 for a package that included Peter Forsberg, five other NHL regulars and two first-round picks, it set them up to win Stanley Cups as the Colorado Avalanche in 1996 and 2001. Components of that trade were later used to help get Patrick Roy, Alex Tanguay, Ray Bourque and Rob Blake. It had a positive trickledown for nearly a decade.

Manufactured illness?

More of this Pierre McDouche crap about the Kings?
Madden bugs the shit out of me, but he's better than to spread this shit.
Dammit, sh0ez. You have no right to beat me to that article. :)
That'll teach me to post in a hurry before I read.

Not only do I have to wait forever for hockey to start up again, but I also have to wait until Sept. 2 for the release of "The Office" on DVD. I missed the last two episodes because they were on during Pens games. Curses.
@raybin, wxpn.org just played Crossroads Blues.
Philly station, but great music for the work day.
I need my new Edge shave gel to shave off the beard of awesome that just gave me.
Holy crap.
I'm stealing that to use in every possible situation from now on.
the rock is up by 1
Somebody please tell these guys to start signing contracts with the Pens soon so we don't have to listen to any more trade rumors or speculation. Thanks.
Oh, and especially MAF. For someone who I have never met and in all probability never will unless I stumble across him at Eat n Park at 4AM some time, I am pathetically attached to the guy.
I wish I would have found this earlier in the season, I found it in time for around the middle of the season or a little before...still the best thing I ever did was find it.
@m. vanderlasser
Solid. Any station that plays Mr. Johnson has my eternal and undying love.
@dying alive
So is my wife. She told me that if the Pens can't agree to terms with Fleury that she wouldn't watch hockey anymore.
She's a little overly dramatic. haha.
Chastising Malkin for not using English is ridiculous.
Malkin knows English; he's just not comfortable using it right now and he may not be for another year or two. He hasn't even been here for two years.
I spent two years in college taking Russian and even after that, I would've still been incredibly uncomfortable going over there and attempting to communicate in Russian. It's an incredibly difficult language to learn because it's based more in concepts and inferences as opposed to a language like English, which is rooted more in literal meanings and translations.
wow my friend just got fired for no reason at all. my reaction i told her? me = stunned.
Dan, take the metro to the Verizon Center (if you're driving down during the day and going right back after, park at the Shady Grove stop on the red line - it's off 270). The red, green, and yellow lines all stop directly under it (Gallery Place/Chinatown) - that's so much better than driving among the insane locals. Website here; let me know if you have questions or need more detailed info on getting around.
Victor, have you checked NBC's website for "The Office" eps? I'd forgotten to record the finale but it was online the next day (for free).
Awesome recap, nicely done. Makes me piss just thinking about next season already.
pensgirl - thanks. that's what we did when we went to the game in october. we stayed in shady grove actually. how late does the metro run on sundays? these shows always run late, that's what worries me. would i be any better off driving farther to a few stops ahead of shady grove?
ugh Tiger has 2 shots over Rocco.
Ah the days of Don Brennan. Dick.
@pensgirl
Hadn't thought of that. However, I live in a forgotten corner of PA that doesn't have high speed. Egad, the hassle.
i remember when i could read the c blog, now its just too much
@ victor - if you have the patience for bit torrents you can find them on there as well.
Dan, the metro continues to run if VC events run late so people who rode in don't get stranded (you can see where thousands of people stuck in one place would be a big problem, worse if they got angry about it). You should be fine in terms of schedule.
I believe the Shady Grove stop has the most available parking, so you're better off just using that one for that reason. Some of the stops have decent lots and some are actually quite small. Better not to chance it.
For your penguin naming consideration...
Icy McCool
Smoothy McSheet
Slappy McShot
Just kidding.
But seriously, I say Gary and/or Roberts for Mr. tPB Penguin.
pensgirl - that is good to know. i was worried about getting stranded. thank you so much for the info!
Added bonus is that if you're coming in from Shady Grove, you don't have to transfer at any point.
How long will it take to get commuter rail down to Richmond? Probably prohibitavely long, because not enough people in the Richmond area commute to Washington every day. We have our own major employers here, thank you very much. Of course, that does mean driving to Springfield before I can catch any useful mass transit, which blows.
Rocco=stunned and done
Three shot lead for Tiger=game over
@ nathan - i know shady grove is about a 30 minute ride, if that helps. probably not.
3 shots over Rocco.... shittttt
I come in from Springfield when I go to Washington for any reason. It's about 40 minutes to Downtown from there. I transfer at the Pentagon when I'm going to Verizon, cuts about 20 minutes from staying on the Blue line and catching the Red at Metro Center.
beav - it ain't over, 'til it's over.
I noticed that people like to drop ex penguins names like bad habits... I liked the Joey D reference above so I figured I'd hop on the wagon with...
...
German Titov?
Yeah....just name the Penguin "Gary" and get it over with! haha
Rocco back within 2!
@ Raybin... You got it dudes!
@Staff: The check you sent for my "refreshing the page 500 times a day" work didn't clear. Western Union bitches!
WOOOOOO!
The Penguin's name is so obvious that it hurts,
He should be named, "Dick"
Joosh?
You gotta' be jooshin' me.
NAME THE PENGUIN EITHER...
BURIES IT!
...OR
SOMETHNG TO DO WITH GARY ROBERTS!
Homesprout, I was just thinking exactly:
"Just name the penguin Gary."
Dick, is a good name too. Perhaps even solid.
Nathan, I don't know about the Virginia commuter rail, but the Maryland one is sloooooow (about an hour and 20 minutes from Baltimore to DC).
Oh, and the Maryland commuter rail also doesn't run on weekends.
I wonder if $20 would get me a round at Torrey Pines!? :-D
Rocco within 1 now!!
demondg1 mentioned it above, joose and I are apparently in agreement for "Gary" the penguin....
I'm one more that loves Dick!
... you know as a name for the Pensblog Penguin.
Stop judging me.
Virginia commuter rail (the vaunted VRE) doesn't go any farther south than Fredericksburg anyway. I think economic viability studies have been done, and there isn't enough commuter demand to extend it to Richmond. Just not enough daily commuters to Washington from here.
Which means that 95 is going to continue to be a fucking nightmare. When I went up to Pennsylvania over Memorial Day, coming back, I caught southbound 95 at Fredericksburg, and the northbound lanes were a solid mass of crawl the whole way to the 295 junction north of Richmond.
Dick(y) Roberts?
Alexandre Daigle.
tied!!!
don't stop believin'
wow beav=stunned
Go Rocco Go!
@ Homesprout -
I think they showed a graphic yesterday that said you play Torrey Pines for like $39 or $49, or something like that.
Stilly,
Thank you for the daily smiles.
Love (in a sisterly way, of course),
Joose
I was just going to say...
Does the fact that I'm rooting for Tiger Woods to suffer a Greg Norman-like collapse make me a bad person?
Or a racist? (Sorry, Mike Georger...I couldn't resist...)
Go Rocco Go!!!!
Nathan I feel you on the 95 clusterfuck. My family vacations east of Richmond and my only options are 301 or 95, so it's basically do you want hit in the face with a baseball bat or a 2x4 (and during holiday rushes it's more like wrench or hammer). I can't tell you how many times I've been on that stretch b/w DC and Richmond where even the HOV lanes are at a dead stop. It's abominable.
Once coming home it got so bad I actually drove up to Warrenton to get back. To BALTIMORE.
@ stoosh - that makes you a good person.
the rock just dropped a SICK putt
Stoosh,
Thank you for the daily smiles.
Love (in a sisterly way, of course),
Joose
P.S. This Joosh person.... Is this a Joose/Stoosh mix? I hope so, because he/she is probably the most awesome person in existence. Right?
Right.
Go Rocco Go!
Ya know....if he wins, maybe we call Stephen's Penguin Rocco.
Ok, that I did not expect. Way to go Rocco!
Tiger short putt = choke.
I always take 301 from Carmel Church to I-97 south of Baltimore when I'm going to Connecticut to visit the in-laws. It's not that bad, but I can see how it can very easily go to hell, especially once you get north of La Plata and into that Waldorf mess.
chica - i'm all for that. haha
Because I hate golf and have nothing else to talk about, please list for me your three favorite songs and your three favorite albums of all time. I'm curious and looking for recommendations. Think of it as a sociology project.

xuscbausp
Realistically, Oasis would be 1-10 of a top 10 for both songs and albums. ha I love them immensely. I tend to be more attracted to Noel's songs, though, like "Little by Little," "Talk Tonight," etc. They are all mind-blowing.
Everyone should have "Supersonic," too.
Rachele
I used to have an obsession with 5ive. Everyone should remember "When the Lights Go Out."

I always said my entrance theme for the WWE would be Devil's Dance by Metallica on their ReLoad album. The bass line at the beginning of that song rules my face.
Stilly
Forget anything nice I ever said about you, and your birthday is no longer June 9th.
Rachele
I used to know the dance to "Slam Dunk Da Funk." I really don't think anyone understands the obsession I had (and secretly still have at least in a minute amount).
Wow, no love for Rex Guildo yet.
@dying alive, can't we make it 10 favorite songs and 10 favorite albums?
Having to choose just three of each is making blood come out of my ears.
wwe entrance theme: especially in michigan by rhcp
@ Stilly,
I tuned out of Metallica when the whole Napster thing went down, so I had to Youtube that song. Solid choice. I preferred Pantera at the time, so I would probably go with the intro to "Cowboys From Hell."
Judgment call from C-bloggers...Is "Youtube" a verb in the same way that "Google" has become a verb?
I find entrancethemeblog much more interesting than favorite song/albumblog. This is some good stuff.
hahaha...i'll be a nice guy...
1) Close To The Edge - YES
2) Ripples - Genesis
3) Bad - U2
@Maria,
I was torn in choosing between The Bends and OK Computer. Eventually went with OK Computer since the tracks they played off of it translated better live the two times I saw them in Cuyahoga Falls.
