Malone, Roberts On Verge

Looks like the Lightning aren't playing around. [ Sportsnet ]

Roberts looks to be signing for $2 mill a year.
Malone looks like he's gonna sign a long-term deal worth $30 mill.

Malone was a great player, but something tells me he's not gonna have that kind of year again. Roberts, awesome...but old and not worth keeping. Shero makes another great move.

Dan 2 said...

You'd really think Malone would be able to make semi-similar money (30+ mil is insane though) on a team that doesn't blow.

Beav said...

@ Dan 2

As fun as it is to crush Tampa, their top six is going to be pretty decent next year. Prospal LeCav St. Lou and Malone Stamkos whoevs

Along with a healthy Danny Boyle and Mike Smith is the best thing they've had in net since the cup. Plus the mullet-power behind the bench and I'd be very surprised if Tampa is a lottery pick next year.

Didn't this team just implode from overpaying people?

Anything remotely resembling a farm system would do wonders too.

prozach said...

i agree with stanish, i think players like him do much better when on the ice with star players or better teams in general

Beav said...

Well part of their problem was a self-imposed budget by the previous owners. With the new rock star owners they are probably going to spend to the cap. And don't forget they have the ultimate secret weapon in Omlette

Malone for 30 million?? Wow, that could be around five million a year...mistake.

Good for Bugsy and his family. Bad for the Lightning IMO.

Malone is only as good as the people around him. Not to say he doesn't have any individual talent, but this sort of reminds of the whole Todd Bertuzzi thing with Anaheim. They paid a lot for a physical winger who likely won't exceed twenty goals again. Malone can hold his own as a solid second line guy and plays a good physical game and is a wonderful roleplayer, but he's not worth that much. To me, this five million is overpaying. As for Gary Roberts, same deal, the guy is a little too old to have solid production. But, Tampa Bay does get better with these moves.

As for the Pens, well, let's just get Orpik locked up and go from there and get some wingers who aren't interested in only money....Ho$$a!!!

@sabrejets

nice to see a cblogger that can go back in history farther than moi!

have you been back to the DUQ campus the past year?...the landscape on Forbes have changed a bit...across the street from the Palumbo and towards the city is a brand spankin' new building that I believe is a student rec center/gym amongst other things....the ground floor [which is also available to non-students] has a Barnes and Noble, some type of Juice Bar/deli & The Red Ring restaurant, which has been my destination for many a Pens pregame meal once it opened instead of the same ol' same ol' at the Souper Bowl & Pizza Milano.

I'm sure a DUQ student cblogger can give you greater detail as I just pass thru the 'campus' on my way up to the Arena lot to park for work & while walking to/from games...

Tampa's gonna be sportin' some combination of Lacavalyay (which of course, is French for "The Cavalyay"), Saint Looey, Propsal, Malone, the Stamkos and um...Jussi Jokinen, I guess, in their top six. That's pretty good provided Stamkos adapts well to the new NHL.

I'm assuming that Malone's deal is gonna be six years, $30 million for a cap hit of $5.0M per year. That doesn't leave them much room to shore up a defense that's still going to be paper thin beyond Dan Boyle and Paul Ranger. And if Smith struggles in net, they're in trouble.

No problem. The next c-blog get together is going to be insane.

Appreciate the follow up on Pittsburgh nostalgiablog...I miss getting to town a lot. When I was there we would hit Shales, (the Old Rugby bar) Molly Magees (long gone I think) and the Souper Bowl.
There was no Palumbo Ctr and no Rooney Field, Hoops were in the Igloo and football was over on the Sahthside...

The student union on campus used to have a bar in the basement called the Rathskeller but they closed it when a bunch of off campus gang bangers showed up and caused a good deal of trouble there one night. Used to be nice to have a beer during, before, and after class.

I learned to love hockey a lot more going to Duquesne. They played intramural street hockey on the fenced in basketball court that was in front of towers, and yes it was fun to watch. The frats had teams, and various dorm floor teams got jerseys -- I remember the Blackhawks being one...

The news of the shooting at DU sort of took me back too, unfortunately. The year I started at DU four (count 'em) basketball players were accused of raping a student (Art Institute of Pitts. I think) and they got kicked off the team.

sorry if I bored everyone with nostalgiablog...

Shero=Genius
Roberts=Whatev.

I agree with Stoosh. Tampa's going to have problems on the back end.

As much as i respect GR, i think he should have just retired and maybe this season will prove me right. In that respect, i agree with Steelpen- both could very well disappear because neither Vinny nor Marty are the players that Sid or Geno are. Malone was made by Geno. He should hand over some of his check to Geno, in fact. I'm not bitter; i'm happy Malone will get paid. But, not to beat a dead horse, Shero not's into overpaying guys.

TheFandangler said...

The Lightning are my second fav team so at least Malone is still in the fold for me but to see them overpay like that is ridiculous. The same goes for Roberts. Good for them and thank you Ray Shero for once again proving you're a great GM.

A long-term contract worth 30 mil for a power-forward who had one good year.

And you need a reason why Pittsburgh won't become TBN?

Flyer Hater said...

If Tampa makes the playoffs next year, I'll make-out with BNG66...

stokes said...

@ Flyer Hater: Let's be honest, was it even a whole year or was it only since January that Malone had a good "year?"

dhudzin said...

Good for both of these guys.

Hockey's a business too and Malone cashed in. I wish him nothing, but the best.

As for Gary, he showed this group of youngins how to win in the playoffs. That was the goal from day one. The kind of value Roberts brought to this team cannot be measured in dollars. Gary Roberts was my favorite hockey player before he came to the Pens and it was incredible how the fans in Pittsburgh endeared him. It's awesome how we're all so alike.

As soon as the season ended I was hoping that Rolston would be available for the Pens to pick up. I LOVE this guy. At first it looked like Minnesota was going to resign him as he was made their top priority. Slowly negotiations deteriorated to the point that they are now non-existent, and with Malone signing elsewhere, the possibility of Rolston coming to the Pens keeps getting greater and greater. DO IT SHERO.

This guy is a leader, sticks up for his teammates if needed, has an insane slapshot, is bank on the PK, and IMO, would fit perfectly next to Geno and Sykie. Only thing is that he won't be parking himself in front of the net, so that would need to be addressed with a different acquisition, but other than that, he will replace and exceed what Bugsy did on that line. He'll put up 30 goals.

A friend of mine just said that I should change the meaning of my WWGRD wristband to "What Would Gordie Roberts Do" . . . Ughblog.

I didn't expect them to even get close to a deal with Malone, however the news of his Dad being hired as the head pro scout for the Lightning makes me wonder if that is a big reason for him possibly signing with them. Phoenix was a rumor before . . .

If anyone wants to add me on Facebook, too, just click here! I got a good majority of everyone I think, but I know I'm missing some people.

Let's say that Shero gets Roslton. Let's also say that Rolston does have a great year, maybe 30+ goals. This will prove the point that as long as the Pens have Sid and Geno, the wings will fall in line and they will have success. Unless HCMT decides that Sid needs to play with some joke for the next three years again.

@Flyer Hater: Thank you. I did NOT remember that. For sure, he's proven to be a decent player, but not $5 mill worth, at least not yet, and possibly never again. I do commend him on the part that he played this season and the heart that he displayed. But , I'm not going to pay a guy $5 mil for heart.

Soccerblog: I played for some 15 years at various competition levels and i realize that it is a physical game that many Americans do not give it its proper due. Having said that, watching what i have of the European Cup, its amazing to see these guys crumble like a deck of cards whenever they get kicked, pushed, etc. What a bunch of divers.

Johnny Wrath said...

Well well well. The world is full of surprises. I was confident that Malone would wait around to try and fleece us in the event that we didn't sign Hoss.

How sick would a Rolston-Crosby-Naslund line be? Both wingers likely would only cost $2M more than one Hossa, although "The Hossa Play™" would be severely missed.

Rolston is a defensive beast, speedy, and one hell of a shot. Naslund obviously knows where to go to score goals, but has been without a decent line for the better part of the post-lockout NHL. I don't think it was that dick Bertuzzi that really effected Nas, I think it was the departure of Jovonovski.

In any event, we could stand to be a much-improved team this season should things fall into place. You can't 'make' players sign for you... but imagine going from "we play the trap 120% of the time" to "Try not to get caught up watching Sid".

If that fails, there is always the small matter of the similarly unhappy with 120% trap Gaborik. Maybe we lock Nas or Rolston, make a deal for Gaborik. Rolston-Sid-Gaborik. All I know is that the indicators all point toward Mario wanting to win so long as it doesn't throw the cap out of our control, and if we have our centres, our emerging defence, wingers like this, and our new building.... Good luck.

We'd better sign Hainsey. He could actually fulfill the Mark Eaton role which we've been missing due to signing of Mark Eaton.

xuscbausp said...

well said by both of you regarding rolston.

Flyer Hater said...

fandangler, why not? When healthy, Tucker can be a great grinder, a guy who creates space for Malkin, and someone who could score 25-30 goals. I think he would be more than adequate replacement for Malone.

FFBarton268 said...

So here's the thing. Bugsy was undoubtedly in my top five fav players on the Pens for a long time. Actually grew up right over the hill from him. But this deal stinks. A bit overpaid by TB. Also, I jumped ship (literally) and got out of the Navy after seven years so I could come back to Pittsburgh. Took a big time pay cut to do so...but I'm happy I did it.

@IHK - I have my Kaspar jersey still hanging up in my closet. No lie.

@sh0ez/Eileen - facebooks requests sent.

I like the D&B wingblog idea. Also like the Primanti's idea, but mayhaps we should go to one of the bigger sit down/restraunt/bar ones like in Crafton off 60 or down in North Versailles. Just a thought.

TheFandangler said...

I just don't think Tucker can be depended on. It's a big risk is all I'm trying to say. Is it possible for Tucker to score?... yes. 30 goals?... not likely. I think we need to be looking for the best complimentary players out there. We need a guy for the top line and the second line.

Gary for 2 mil? Dammit, I wish the Pens could've re-secured him at that. Whatev, I wish him the best. He'll always be Lord Gary as far as I'm concerned.

The guy, I think, would mesh well with Jordan Staal, because he could use a guy with a little more offensive talent and presence. Can't forget that Jordan can score, and just giving him one guy could be good for the team as a whole, as long it's not overpaying. Could work, even though Bertuzzi's had himself a troubled past.

I'm really intrigued by the possibility of Vrbata and Tucker on the Pens.

I can't say I'm a huge fan of Tucker, but he scored 28 goals the first year back from the lockout and then 24 in 2006-07. He fell to 18 last year, but that very well may have been because the team around him blew.

He seems to have toned down his act quite a bit, and I think he could easily replace Malone's grit and edge. I've always wanted to see Raffi Torres play here, and Torres is kind of a "Tucker Jr.", so I wouldn't really hate the notion of seeing Tucker in a Pens jersey.

I'd rather see Rolston than Tucker, but I'd be happy with Tucker.

Vrbata REALLY intrigues me because when you stack his numbers last year (27-29-56 in 76 games) up against Malone (27-24-51 in 77 games) and then consider who each likely had as his center (Vrbata played with either Doan or Mueller), it makes you wonder. Doan's a good center, but he's not Evgeni Malkin. He's definitely not Crosby.

Makes me wonder. Vrbata would be a great under-the-radar signing here.

Penguicana and Free Candy!!! Please Mr. Shero...they're all I ask for!

Completely agree. I would be very happy to see those two back, even if there is little else done that makes a splash.

That said, I completely agree with Raybin's assessment at 5:49. I'd be OK up to about 7.5, but over that is probably too much and its time to move on.

Damn, Tampa ... alright here's the deal, Bugsy ... now since you decided to ignore my whole "I'll be your slave forever" bargain then you must do this ...Have a good 1st 2 years, alright, make everyone know you are awesome, then slightly decline in value for the next 2-3 year; by that I mean, play good but don't play your A game ... then in your last year or 2 play like the beast you are. Ditch Tampa Bay for the Pens because you want to go to a Cup winning team and seal the deal at home. That's what I'm thinking but hey I could sound a bit crazy ...

I agree dan. I love Scuds just as much as the next guy (or girl), but when healthy, Eaton is just about as defensively-sound as you can get. Unlike Scuds where when he plays a good game you won't hear about him, when Eaton plays a good game you WILL hear about him because whoever's calling the game won't be able to get enough of all the blocked shots and pokechecks, and rightfully so.

Stoosh said...

Kudos to Malone. Free agency rewards players who put up big performances right before becoming free agents and he did just that.

I remember the summer of 2006 not long after Shero was hired, when he announced that the team had signed Malone to a contract extension. Malone was coming off a fairly disappointing 2005-06 season when he showed up miserably out of shape and looked nothing like the player we first saw in 2003-04.

I remember Shero saying that Malone had a chance to make himself a hell of a lot of money if he put his mind to it and decided to work for it. Despite that very public kick in the ass, Malone still struggled in 2006-07 and was even publicly threatened with a trade.

To his credit, he came back this year as a question mark but evolved into one of the better power forwards this franchise has seen in a while. When we watch him play next year, we'll know for certain if Ryan Malone's 2007-08 season was a player turning a corner in his career or a player making the most out of a contract year.

stokes said...

I agree with Dan. I think that Scuds is totally serviceable, but i think that a healthy Eaton destroys Scuds.

On a side note, i almost bought Eaton's skates on Friday. I had them in my hand! But i was afraid that i would get nickeled and dimed by injuries for the rest of my Beer League career. Ok, truthfully, they were about a size too big for me.

Alright, so a few of you don't like the idea of Bertuzzi as a Pen. Hey, great, this helps this whole offseason thing move along a bit faster.

I think that Todd Bertuzzi had made some cheap plays in the past and could use some moral fabric. That being said, I still think he can play. Todd is, like Malone, only as good as those around him(14 goals this season much?). Malone to me, is better than Bertuzzi as of now and is better in the locker room. That being said, we've lost Malone, who cashed in for life with Tampa Bay, whom I think made a mistake.

Bertuzzi is a physical guy who runs the net and can deflect pucks and agitate the other teams. He's been doing this a while. You lose a big, tough physical guy during a winning year and you replace him, especially when you have the best 1-2-3 center tandem in hockey(find me a 3rd line center better than Jordan Staal). Bertuzzi would do well under the second power play unit and with Jordan centering him on the 3rd line because of this. It's not much responsibility for him either. I can respect why you guys wouldn't want him, as he can be an ass and isn't as good as he was at one time, but I mean, people hate Ruutu as well, but Ruutu delivers for the Pens, and a guy like Bertuzzi would deliver in the same way he does, by not playing a major role.

Also, I would take Eaton over Scuderi. Eaton led the team in blocked shots before the injury. He isn't the biggest hitter in the world, but to me, he is the same style as Scuderi but makes less mistakes. I appreciate Scuds but as this last trade shows, you need a winning hockey club and to me, Scuderi makes the idea 7th defensemen, when you have guys who check four people in one shift and play fifty minutes in a playoff game when your top D-man goes out.

Turk: Here was your lineup next year....

Naslund-Crosby-Rolston
Sykora-Malkin-Kennedy
Filewich-Staal-Ruutu
Stone-Talbot-Hall

Gonch-Campbell
Whitney-Scuderi
Letang-Gill

How about this:
Naslund-Crosby-Rolston
Sykora-Malkin-Stall
Ruutu-Talbot-Kennedy
BGL-Hall-Taffe or someone else

As for defense I'll take Free Candy over Cambell anyday, cheaper, and Orpik is not as a defensively liability as Campbell is, he got burnt several times in the playoffs, plus we have enough puck-moving defense

TheSteelPen66 said...

I agree with American Hero, ALMOST totally, Bertuzzi is solid i dont care if people hate him, like he said people hate Ruutu, and thats probably why i love him. Lets face it Ruutu is an ass on the ice, and i wouldnt have it any other way. Show me a line with Ruutu and Bertuzzi on it and ill show you a line that will make Jaromir Jarg, and Danny Briere crap their pants.

As for the best 1-2-3 center line up in the league, screw that its the best 1-2-3-4, Max Talbot is the shit.

The only thing is i'd take Scuderi over Eaton in a heart beat, Scuds stepped it up BIGTIME this season and is Solid as ever, where as Eaton is an injury magnet, sure he my be a bit better if he's healthy but the last two seasons have show that that has been a BIG if.

I like your forward lines as well...if BGL signs for the standard raise, he'd be a good 13th forward/insurance policy for the regular season [seems like the playoffs were just a bit too fast for his 'pace', IMO]

I'd really like to have Orps back instead of Campbell [I think Campbell's d-play suffered as a result of Gonch-ish ice time leading up to the playoffs]
but, the closer it gets to July 1...the more I think he's not going to resign [unfortunately]

I hope I'm wrong.

As far as centers go:

Crosby, Malking, Stall, talbot, Hall, and Taffe all play, but talbot and Stall can both play the wings... the question is do you want stall's upside he earned while playing on the wing or his upside at center shutting down lines... I will amend my 4th line to BGL-Hall-Dupuis.....

Stoosh said...

Um....Eaton's NOT injury prone.

He missed 35 games in 2006-07 because he and Jonathan Cheechoo were racing back for a loose puck and Eaton was rammed into the boards, causing him to break his wrist.

He missed 50 games this past season because Marco Sturm slew-footed him and Eaton tore his friggin' MCL.

"Injury prone" applies to players who get constant, minor nagging injuries. "Injury prone" was Josef Melichar or Michal Rozsival, neither of whom could walk from here to the end of the block without hurting their shoulder. "Injury prone" is Tim Connolly, who seems to suffer a concussion every time the breeze exceeds 15 mph.

Eaton suffered two serious injuries due mostly to plays made by opposing players.

Stoosh said...

This is what I'm hoping to see on defense next year...

Orpik - Gonch
Whitney - Eaton
Letang - Gill
Scuds as the 7th d-man
Goligoski as the 8th d-man

nextyearslinesblog: all the fa talk is starting to make me nervous so i'm trying not to think too much about it. i'm ok with just about any winger that yinz have mentioned. not exactly sold on bertuzzi but i could be persuaded.

Eaton-injuries>scuds but its hard to want to take a chance on someone who seems to be injured so often. i know that the injuries were a result of penalties but that doesnt repair the damage done. he's a ? for me.

sorry for the long post!

Flyer Hater said...

I'd definitely take Eaton back at anywhere from 1-1.5 Mil but nothing more.

I Have Kasparaitis said...

@Stoosh: I always say that about Eaton and still no one gets it ... maybe if you say it people will listen. That really ticks me off because Mark Eaton is one of the best defensive defensemen and no one understands that the injuries are only his fault in the way that opponents don't know how to play against him ...

No love for Sydor, though? *laughs* Yeah ... that was a joke, but I don't think we can move him anywhere unless he waives his No Trade Clause ...

Stoosh said...

@ Brndlynn -

I can understand being concerned if Eaton is able to come back 100% from two serious injuries.

But I think that and worrying about him being chronically injury-prone are two different things, and I've heard a lot of opinions expressed that seem to suggest he's chronically injury-prone the same way Melichar and Rozsival used to be when they were here.

We've had monsoonblog going all day here in Aliquippa. Softball games were cancelled long ago because the field reportedly looked similar to the Florida Everglades (wooooo!). It's still friggin' raining out here.

@ Stoosh

You forgot to mention Forsberg. He gets injured in dreams. Every time someone checks him in NHL 2k7 his ankle becomes sore.

Stoosh said...

@ IHK -

I actually forgot entirely about Sydor. Oops. I guess that goes to show what I think of him.

Actually, I like Sydor...I'll just be interested to see if Shero can get him to waive his NTC.

If Sydor stays, maybe Eaton is the odd man out...

Orpik - Gonchar
Whitney - Sydor/Scuderi
Letang - Gill
Sydor/Scuderi = 7th d-man
Goligoski = 8th d-man

brndlynn said...

@ ihk: i think alot of people realize that eaton isnt "injury prone" per se but the fact is that he's had tough injuries that arent always easy to come back from. sometimes an injury such as a mcl tear can become an ongiong problem for athletes down the road.

brndlynn said...

@ stoosh: i see what you mean. there is a major difference between the two. im more concerned with him coming back rather than how the injuries occured before.

J.S. said...

and when Roberts signs in TB for 2 mil, he'll be traded back to Pittsburgh for that third round pick once TB misses the playoffs. ;)

dhudzin said...

I don't see why Sydor wouldn't waive his NTC. I read somewhere that him and the team agreed that a separation was in the best interest of both parties.
