"Oilers GM Kevin Lowe may have called Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero about unrestricted free-agent winger Ryan Malone, who scored 27 goals this past season."

Honestly, this is a dream come true for us.
To potentially watch Kevin Lowe overpay for Ryan Malone is what will help us get out of bed in until July 1st.

Couple this rumor, with the idea that [Columbus may be trying to get Malone], and it looks Malone is on his way out.

That will be a tough day if it does happen, but you don't pay a 25 goal scorer 5 million a season.

The Pens file for salary arbitation with MAF. [TSN]

"By filing for salary arbitration it gives us extra time to continue to negotiate a contract with Marc-Andre," Pens general manager Ray Shero said. "As a result of the filing, Penguins' fans are assured that Marc-Andre will be under contract to our club for next season. Marc-Andre has done a tremendous job for us. We remain committed to negotiating a contract with him in the near future."

[Jschiff]

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Say it ain't so Joe.

We have always respected Joe Starkey as a solid writer.
But today, he may have jumped the shark. [Trib]

In his column, titled "Malkin On Thin Ice."
Starkey stuns the world:

"By keeping Staal, the Penguins would potentially have a Mark Messier-type to complement their Wayne Gretzky (Crosby)."

The rest of the article makes you wonder if Ron Cook and Bob Smizik have Starkey at gunpoint somewhere.

If anything, it the direct opposite of what Rob Rossi told us, only yesterday:
Malkin said Thursday at the NHL Awards Show in Toronto that he expects to sign a five- or six-year extension "soon" after July 1. The Penguins' focus on a deal for Hossa should not affect Malkin's possible extension.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

It is going to be a long summer.

Go Pens and Happy Fathers day.

rwarner174 said...

Can someone please name me a #3 center on any team? Than why all the fuss about signing Staal to a long term deal now? That is what Starsky's article indicates, that Staal is a priority.

This guy has in no way put up Malkin or Crosby type number. Yes he is a good 2 way hockey player, yes he has a lot of potential upside. No doubt he will be a great hockey player. But to put him up there with Malkin and Crosby as a priority is just plain stupid, at least doing it now is stupid. If you won't pay 5 million a year for 25 goals from Malone, why would you pay that kind of money for Staal who only had around 12 or 13. And like it or not, Staal hasn't cracked 15 assists in either of his first two season, so to those that say he has great on ice vision? Where are you coming from?

If you can get Staal to sign to a reasonable contract great, but not at sacrificing a Malkin, Flurey, or evan a Hossa or Malone.

At some point the need to make a choice, an personally giving a guy a huge contract extension for getting 1 more point than Max Talbot is stupid no matter how you slice it.

I say, keep Staal this year and do not extend his contract. If he does great, than oh well you rolled the dice, try to extend it next year. I take proven talent over potential talent any day. Especially when we have two proven talents in Crosby and Malkin at the same position already.

My point, don't extend Staal's contract, most of your cap problems are then solved. He will still be a restricted free agent next year, what is the hurry?

Nicholas said...

@ flyerhater:

Ummm.. No I mean the last Staal brother; Jared. He plays wing for the Wolves; He's going to be a top 2nd or late-1st round pick

And since he's a STAAL that's ridiculous; I'd kill for a kid like that.

Mike Georger said...

staal IS proven talent, he is already one of the best two way players in the league.

power forwards are not that hard to find, and they usually dont take eight years to develop, and wont cost you five million a year. while having a 19 year old center who is the best defensive center on your team is invaluable

would i take staal over malkin? no. and anyone who would in my opinion is harboring bitterness over jagr, because they think malkin will turn into that kind of personality. malone over staal? theres not a playoff gm in the world that would make that choice.

Mike Georger said...

jared's stock has plummeted the latter half of the season, everything i see says late second early third. his name apparently is hurting him more than helping, people think he was just highly regarded because of who he was. a legitimate concern but at that point in the draft if we have a pick i say go for it. youre probably not finding a hard hitting dman at that point, we dont need anymore centers, no more goalies, but a huge winger would be nice

rwarner174 thanks for thinking the same way!!! I been thinking about the Staal ordeal too that is the best way to handle it this year. just wait until next year. Talbot is a superstar!!! Haven't you heard him say it in the A&L commercials??? but hes worth nothing more than anything over 1.3 mill...(at the MAX!!!) no pun intended!?!?

@ flyer hater,

lol Hemsky for Malone, where do I sign?

and yeah, Malone is the odd man out this offseason, no doubt about it. He may be from pittsburgh, but he doesn't even make his home here in the offseason, no? Doesn't he live in Michigan or something? Plus, he's got a kid now, maybe the money is more important for him.

Of course, after you've got the first couple million in the bank, who cares. If I was Bing, I'd consider playing for like 2 million so that these signings wouldnt be a problem. I'd make a living just off Reebok ads.

That's just reality.

Malone to Edmonton is fine with me. Kevin Lowe makes foolish personnel decisions(see Thomas Vanek and Petr Sykora). He probably would trade something crazy for a guy like Bugsy.

As for that Starkey article, I don't buy it. Malkin is gonna be a Pen for the next 5 to 7 years. I don't think he minds being second to Sid as much as this guy says. He's not Alexander Ovechkin, demanding enormous amounts of money and flash, and I pray he doesn't become one either. I got into an argument with a friend about this during the Rangers series. It was typical AO>Sid nonsense, because AO scores more goals, and deserves more money than Sid.

If you love the sport enough, you don't need UNUSUAL AMOUNTS OF MONEY and flash. Guys like AO, in my opinion, because of the arrogance and flash, aren't as good for the game as guys like Sid. AO has the desires to win, but really hurts his team by demanding twelve million dollars.

Sorry for the rant, back to the issue.

Malkin isn't AO, at least for now, and understands that being second best for Pittsburgh isn't a bad thing. He wants to win too, and here is arguably his best chance. That article is nonsense.

As for a possible trade....I don't think you could anyone of equal value for a guy like the incredible Malk. Talent wise, I would say AO, but he's bad for a team. You couldnt trade me the entire Maple Leafs for him.

So, here are my ideal lines for next season (roughly taking into account a salary cap):

Straka-Bing-Hossa
Rolston-Geno-Syko
Kennedy-Staal-Dupuis
Max-Hall-Roberts

All of us know Straka has more of a touch than Dupuis, and I've always been uneasy with Dupuis playing on the first line even though I like him. Max would be a better fit on that line than Dupuis in my opinion. To me, Dupuis is little more than a 3rd line energy guy. Straka can play with the big boys: I will forever have his series-clinching OT goal against the Capitals where he pickpocketed Gonch and went in on a breakaway etched in my mind.

I am really hoping Minnesota lets Rolston slip away while trying to resign Demitra, and if so, I think he'd be a perfect fit with Geno and Sykora. He's defensive-minded in a way, but has an offensive touch. He is also a leader and a penalty-killing specialist. He is consistently among the league leaders in short-handed goals. He also has speed which could definitely help on the rush with Geno since Sykora isn't known for his speed and loves to cruise in late in the high slot.

D pairings are up the in the air, but I would like to see them somehow consist of:

Gonch
LeGame
Whitney
Free Candy
Scuds
Gill

Not much to say here. Resign Brooks.

While Sabu is an acceptable backup given his salary, I would really like to see Conks stay. He had such a positive effect on Fleury this year and I'm sure none of us here will disagree with the notion that his mid-season performance not only propelled us into the playoffs, but gave MAF the drive to take his game to the next level. After every playoff win, Conks was one of the happiest guys on the ice. Talk about everything you want in a backup goaltender. What's $250,000 for such a positive influence on your budding young netminder?

Fleury
Conklin

DO IT.

2. mmmmmmmm....Bruster's orange sherbet.

3. For anyone who might be interested, Dick's has Pens Eastern Conf. Champs hats and T-shirts on sale. Hats are down to $7-8 and t-shirts are like $9. Got a hat and t-shirt today for less than what the hats originally cost.

4. Debris - you need to forward that comment about John Lennon to Starkey as soon as possible. That's awesome.

Rhythmguitarblog...

Glenn Frey played rhythm for the Eagles (Joe Walsh generally admits he was a hired gun). Tom Petty lays down the rhythm for his Heartbreakers, as Bill Haley did for his Comets. David Crosby was the backing guitarist for the Byrds. Brad Whitford and Ron Wood allowed Joe Perry and Keith Richards to do what they did, respectively. And Guns N' Roses never released an album of original material after original rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin left the band more than 15 years ago (you knew I had to throw that in there...).

@ Dan: Agree completely on the Fleury contract. I do not see where he warrants a 6 year, 31M deal. No way, no how: he had a great stretch at the end of the season and through most of the playoffs, but he had a VERY shaky start, and in the Finals, save for the three OTs, his play was average at best. Give him 2-3 years and re-evaluate from there. I don't think he's been solid enough to warrant big money/long term just yet.

back to starkey's article...

sorry to say c-bloggers, but i think he's onto something. not about the chemistry between gino and sid (there's nothing wrong with that) but the money is gonna be a problem. in the year gino's extension would kick in, here's what the pens expense report looks like (estimates on unsigned players)

sid 8.7
gino roughly 7.5 (probably 7-8 though)
gonch 5
whitney 4
hossa 7.1
fleury 4.5 (but that may be too low)
free candy 3.7
letang .8

thats 41.3M for our players either under contract now or expected through the rumors of late. if the cap goes up to 56M that year (again, being optimistic), that leaves 15M for 15 players.

is that really realistic? i don't think so. those 15 players could include staal, scuds, goligoski, talbot, hall, etc. how is starkey really that far off the mark here?

Dan said...

racheleyos = my hero. the wind beneath my wings.

Stoosh said...

@ matteo -

It's realistic if Shero is able to continue to get relatively solid contributions from fairly cheap role players.

I pointed this out a couple of days ago...the Pens need to continue to get guys like:

Scuderi - $712K
Talbot - $675K
Kennedy - $541K
Conklin - $500K
Dupuis - $880K
Hall - $525K
Taffe - $500K
Nathan Smith - $500K
Connor James - $475K

Those were the respective cap hits for those guys, and those are the ones who help offset the big ticket guys.

In addition, the Pens need to supplement these guys with veterans who come in on shorter-term, lower-cost deals similar to those of Sykora and Sydor. Those deals are short-term commitments that can be moved fairly easily to free up space.

And if the numbers become a problem, why does everyone automatically assume it's going to be a big-name guy like Malkin to move? They can free up just as much cap space by moving someone a little further down on the list of core players - Whitney, for example - and also moving one of those low-term, lower-cost veterans I mentioned above.

Tangent: Fleury likely will not get much more than Cam Ward got on his deal. Keep in mind that Brodeur's cap hit is only $5.25M a year, and you can believe Shero will be pointing at that number as the market-setting number in negotiations with Fleury. If Fleury comes in at a cap hit larger than $4M, I'll be shocked.

mike, you're dead wrong.

we're going to hate on anyone that bashes hockey.
doesn't matter what race, gender, or nationality they are.

grow up.

Mike Georger said...

and another thing. act like youve been there before?
would you people bitch about sid celebrating if he scored the goal max put in at the end of game five? of course you wouldnt, chances are wed be talking about how fucking awesome the celebration was

woods may be a dick, but you know who else was notoriously competitive, a dick to the media, and hated by most of the people he played against? our owner. when youre the best ever, its lonely on the mountain top.

the hockey comment was retarded and very ill advised, but it was also a pretty stupid ass question to ask him. but if you cant watch that ending and find it pretty damn cool, i feel sorry for you

now if youll excuse me i have to go watch the lakers score update because i refuse to watch the nba on televison

RaCHeLeYoS said...

I don't have a problem with Tiger to be honest.

It be nice to see Rocco win though...

Mike Georger said...

thats fine bash him for the hockey comment, say you want him to lose, call him a dick, photoshop the everloving christ out of him, but knocking someone for celebrating in that situation smacks of desperation.

RaCHeLeYoS said...

dan.....

here you go!!

Dan said...

@ stoosh - i stand corrected. i have looked at nhlnumbers.com too much lately.

@ mike - are you serious about what you are saying about tiger? really? your whole argument reeks of rotten mayonnaise that's been in the sun for 3 weeks.

goodnight all.

RaCHeLeYoS said...

oh geeze. i don't want tiger to lose!! if he won, ok. but i'm rooting for rocco, just because he's from the area.

and there was a whole article about people being upset about the comment. so it's not like some cbloggers here are alone.

it doesn't even matter.

great_white_nwpa said...

i just hate tiger for not playing in the ryder cup...i don't follow golf all that much, but that one kind of got to me

and sports writers making excuses for him because he doesn't do well as "a team player" is a load of BS too...

i find it really pathetic when athletes won't play in world events for their country...you live here, you choose to live here, no go out and show the rest of the world why we are as good as we are

great_white_nwpa said...

rocco is a grade A asshole, from what i'm told...my buddy from blairsville played with him a couple of times...he's got a chip on his shoulder

great_white_nwpa said...

but still, would love to see rocco beat tiger

Mike Georger said...

nonono im not saying its wrong to be upset about it. im just saying that knocking the guy for celebrating makes no sense whether he knocked hockey or not.

i dont give a shit who wins as long as it isnt fatty phil

so not sure what your hatred is based on as you know, hes played in every ryder cup for the last eleven years

but if you dont play for your country *cough cough nba douchebags* for any other reason than injury, youre a dick

Mike Georger said...

hahaha fair enough
sorry im just a tiger apologist, i think its just comes from having lived in the south for the bulk of his career and being surrounded by people who clearly just hated him because he was part non whitey

sh0ez said...

Wow @ Mike. Chill, dude. Damn.

I found Sports Showdown on KDKA with Cook from PG, Laird from ESPN Radio, and the beloved Starkey. Laird was the only one who thought re-signing Hossa was a good idea. The other two basically say if they re-sign Hossa, then they lose Malkin AND Staal and some others, including Fleury. Jesus.

Mike Georger said...

"it just seems awfully convenient how the knee acts up only on his bad shots."
wow thats not even remotely true, as the announcers yesterday kept making the point that you couldnt gauge his reaction to his shot on how good it was. on the last few holes all his shots were pretty great and he was doubling over.

i definitely feel confident calling that guy racist. and that he has a terrible combover

eileenover said...

I don't give a rat's ass about Tiger because I don't watch golf and never will. That hockey comment pissed me off, but he just made himself look like a joke because of it. Hockey>golf no matter what anyone says.

honestly i think the reason media guys seem to be against signing hossa and let malone walk is laziness. malone is very media friendly and they always have an angle to write about because of him being the local boy. same kind of thing with colby, they could always go back to the well of him being the joker and hard working guy everyone loves. but with hossa they dont know much about the guy, his english isnt great, and hes not local.

the hockey comment was retarded and very ill advised, but it was also a pretty stupid ass question to ask him.

the question was asked from a news conference from Oakland Hills CC, site of the PGA Championship in a couple months in...suburban Detroit.

Tiger participated via satellite & was asked the question from a member of the Detroit press.

I think it was a very valid question, considering the venue & situation the Cup™ Finals were in.

I hope every hockey fan in attendance at the PGA wears a DET jersey & heckles the shit out of Tiger....maybe he'll get the message [or Steve-o will try to beat everyone up, which would be fun to see, as well]

.........

IF it goes to arbitration...whatever $ amount the arbitrator decides is FINAL. MAF can decide if he wants it for 1 or 2 years...

That's why King Shero said that MAF will be here for at least the 08-09 season.

eh i disagree but whatever. and somehow i think there might be a different crowd there than at a hockey game. and is it a requirement there be one major a year a course with the word 'oak' in it?

someone might have mentioned it but are there any current goalies who went to arbitration?
for some reason i cant imagine the arbitrator siding with the player when he missed half the season with an injury, that does impact it

Beav said...

Mike

I agree, Fleury may or may not think he's worth the stars and the moon but he only played half the season and wasn't very good before he got hurt. I love Flower but if he is bitching about more money, he's on the wrong team. This is a team led by a captain who took less money to keep the team together. Follow his example or go fuck yourself as far as I'm concerned.

Dr. Turkleton said...

pain killers???

just this with just a tiny bit of steve-o's almost famous codeine happy powder used as a 'sweetener'.

BUT.

Mario did eat Bun Bars™ at his.

Sakic19 said...

Fuck Tiger Woods

I Have Kasparaitis said...

I'm going to try and be nice but I don't know if I will considering I fell asleep @ 4 and was forced to get up by my darling mother @ 9 ... When has Malone and/or Shero talked to the media about their situation? I have yet to see anything so until then, I don't believe it. Trade rumors make off-season and trade deadline hell. Luckily, Bugsy wasn't on the cutting board for trading this year ... unfortunately this off season is looking dim ...

Does anyone else find it weird that the article said the Panthers are gonna use Jokinen, their captain, for trade bait for a first round pick? I don't trust them that much now ... maybe it's me?

I usually hate Rossi, Starkey usually doesn't bug me ... a turn of events occurred ... is it the apocalypse? Or is it that they switched the interns who write their articles?

Mike Georger said...

"the people who accuse others of being racist in a baseless manner are usually the ones burning crosses."

that doesnt even remotely make sense.

-------------------------

sakic im not sure about hypocrisy being the right word but oh boy yes it will get overblown. granted it is impressive to come back and potentially win the toughest golf tournament of the year on a knee that isnt healed. granted obviously its not nearly as impressive as say, sid playing two months of hockey last year with a broken foot, which will probably never be mentioned again by the sports media.

shit was was it ten years ago or more when jordan played that finals game with the flu and we're still hearing about it from time to time. shit there were nfl guys that played games with broken arms in the past, now THATS impressive

all im saying is this ... rightfully so its fine to knock the guy for talking shit about hockey, he has made it abudantly clear that hes a dickhead over the years, so im really not shocked. disappointed, but not shocked.

but to say he should act like hes been there when he makes one of the biggest putts of his career just makes no sense. its akin to flyers fans chanting 'crosby sucks'

now i dont expect much more from flyer hater, waffles, or the chick who kept asking why the pens werent hitting harder against the wings. but intelligent people should be able to think of other ways to knock someone who has offended them than to reach for straws

Flyer Hater said...

Let's sum up Mike's post for those of us who are too s-s-stupid to read it, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

-His wife is a stone cold fox.

Sakic19 said...

@Georger

Just don't call others racist here when they make the statement "act like you've been there before"...that is not a racist statement...I could say the same thing to Kolvalchyuk...

When you call someone racist for saying that you make yourself look like a fool...and a major Tiger woods asskisser...and that is something you will be called out for because of his arrogant comments...

No matter what you say golf is a non-contact sport...football players are very tough...basketball players...eh...maybe some...but golf...we hear this bullshit enough in the so called "mainstream media" that to hear it on a Penguins HOCKEY blog is too damn much to stand...at least for me personally...

so if you want to call yourself a Tiger appologist...go ahead...just don't compare a weekend for him to any average NHL player's seven minute shift on any given tuesday...

whoa whoa whoa whoa im not trying to do that.

i said it was impressive, standing by itself. but compared to football and hockey players, its nothing. (personally i think football is a joke compared to hockey as ive mentioned before, 90 percent standing around, bullshit)

shit nascar is more physically strenuous than golf. something that most people do drunk, and many do better drunk, isnt the most athletic feet in the world.

Mike Georger said...

and thats fine, call me out on it, im okay with that.

xuscbausp said...

if tiger was healthy...it was still impressive what he did during the last 27 holes of the tournament.

besides; cantweallgetalongblog?

Mike Georger said...

and also FH, i dont consider myself a scholar, but having read a fair share of your posts throughout the year i just personally think youre a jackass. although not a racist as i dont think you were one of the ones knocking him for the celebration. however the happy madison productions knowledge does counteract the jackassery

Mike Georger said...

HOWEVER, i would like an explanation from the guy who claims to hate tiger because 'he doesnt play in the ryder cup' when he has played in them every time since he became eligible. how does that not smack of something more deep seeded?

and what both rocco and tiger did was impressive in the golf sense (grain of salt) as noone has finished under par at the open since 2004
