One of my favorite things about the Earl Mann tapes...

When they have any footage of guys hitting each other, they add the old "players making contact" soundbytes from NFL Films. If you've ever seen some NFL Films stuff from the late 1980s or early 1990's, you know what I'm talking about.

Example...the sequence at the 1:37 that begins with Trottier getting hit.

sabrejets said...

Look at it like the ncaa hoops tournament - single elimination, one and done if you lose, instead of thinking about well, we have to win 3 straight. I hope the Pens go after them tomorrow night and make them pay...

Do you all know why there's Detroit trolls on this board?
I went to a couple of their boards and they suck. BOOOORING!

They've got to come over here for
entertaining reading, because there isn't anything like this in Detroit.
Just remember don't feed the trolls.

Thoughts, Stoosh style:

-There is a Play It Again Sports in Greensburg and in Wheeling, the closest to the PGH area. Lame.

-KO Sports is good. Perani's is close to me for the little BS stuff, but KO Sports is the hands-down best.

-Two decent hockey gear websites HockeyMonkey.com and Hockeyoverstock.com

-Omenblog. Tonight, my game was decided in OT. My team tied it up with 8.7 seconds left in the game and the final score was 8-7. Hello, Sidney Crosby.

-As more and more time passes from yesterday, the more i think that THIS CAN BE DONE.

-Earl Mann rulez.

LET'S GO PENS.

Once again, Stokes said what I am thinking... The more time that passes... the more that I realize that this can be done.

Let's Go Pens! I was thinking about that series this afternoon.
I was at Game 6 of that series and it was spectacular. I bought the tickets from a coworker who thought the Pens were done. I remember telling him if the Pens won Game 5 they'd win the Cup again. I paid $50 a piece for 2 tickets in Section A in the end where the Pens shoot once. What a game -what a series.

There used to be/is a play it again sports in Altoona....but who wants to go to Altoona?

So all this noise about a pickup game?
If it's ice I'm almost certainly in.
I'm a really miserable roller hockey player, but I guess I'd still probably go.

That said.............

LET'S GO PENS.

See you all in a few.

Hope to bring back a winner in Game 5!

Stoosh said...

@ Wilsmith -

Closest Play It Again to Pgh is probably in Greensburg, but the problem with PIA is that it's hit or miss. My original pair of skates that I had when I played at W&J was a used pair of Mega Air90's that I got for like $75 used. Brand new, they were probably $200 or so. But there have been other times when I'd go and they'd have nahhhhh-thing.

I'll have to check out a couple of those sites.

BIG K: i've heard that they don't inventory shit, but i don't have the hook up. I do like Premier as well.

Stoosh: its like Goodwill. Somedays you get elevator and somedays you get the shaft. The main thing is this: for me, atleast, that's a far drive for it to be hit or miss. I've got three or four Goodwill's within 15 minutes. I was out there in october and the selection on almost everything was excellent.

Chris said...

Y'know, I have no real reason to bitch about the Penguins because I said they'd be Stanley Cup runners-up and that's the way the chips are falling at this point. I'd like to hope they'll win in 7 and I'll be ecstatic if they do, but they've gotta find whatever they did in Game 3 again and make it work in Detroit. It's not impossible, but we're going to pretend for the moment that it's not going to happen.

That being said, my disappointment doesn't lie with Evgeni Malkin, who's playing like he's either tired, injured, or both. It lies in the officiating, which is frequently overlooked by players, coaches, and fans in the playoffs.

The primary reason the NHL locked out an entire season was so there would be economic stability and long-term viability. The first step to changing that was changing the economics of the league up front, putting a hard cap on the league and allowing teams to buy-out contracts and cutting off a percentage of the rest. The second step was putting a more entertaining game on the ice for the fans, by cracking down on obstruction and just generally changing the way the game was to be played.

In the recent history of the NHL (e.g. since the last lockout in 1994) the NHL playoffs have been a bastion of hope for teams who would otherwise be lit up by more talented teams by all but allowing the most egregious acts of obstruction. Much to my disappointment, this Stanley Cup Final has been full of slipshod officiating in this regard and it pains me to know that the playoffs could be much more competitive if the officials called them like regular season games.

Of course, the argument against this is that the game would be slowed way down by penalty calls, but I personally would prefer to know that the teams who are given the opportunity to win are the ones following the rules and taking advantage of their opponent's lack of discipline.

Not that I'm saying the Red Wings aren't a talented team, but I am saying that with proper officiating, we would know who the more talented team is because they would be given the opportunity to demonstrate their full skill set.

Whew! Just finished reading all of the c-blog posts...

Firstly, it was outstanding meeting BnG and his lady, Stokes, the other good Doctor, Racheleyos and Coffeytalk (thanks for the Blue Moons, I owe u!). I was nervous walking around by myself that I wouldn't see anybody, thank Gary I did. Funny little story about the purse BnG, when u and Rachele went to the head, I couldn't take it anymore and went to get one of those pizzas behind us. I took the purse with me, and dude made some snarky comments about the purse not matching my outfit. I gave him an intense Free Candy glare, and said "was that supposed to be funny?" He got nervous, then I broke into a smile and said I'm just kidding man, gimme a pie...

Oh, and that text i sent you after I left, Colby Armstrong was right beside the hotel, taping for TSN i think. I saw his shnozz.

Shoez, thank you for all of the Pens LOL's, the excellent game recap was nothing to laugh at, but I needed those today.

I think I could do some inline, been thinking about getting some skates anyways. I'll def. look like a baby horse standing for the first time out there though. Kind of like John Dorian when he has sex. Oh...

Stoosh, I noticed those soundbytes. Those old NFL tapes were awesome, I still remember the hardest hit i've ever seen was when Steve Atwater blasted Christian Okoye onto his ass.

Don't stop believin'

Stoosh said...

@ Chris

What frustrates me about the officiating is that for stretches of this series, we've seen how entertaining a wide-open game can be, and the physical play is still there with all of it.

We can have wide-open hockey without making it a non-contact league. People too often subscribe to this theory that you can't have a wide-open game without taking the physical element out of it. That's completely untrue because a physical game and a game marred by obstruction and interference are two completely different things.

I grew up with an NHL that allowed its skaters to skate and it's skill players to showcase their skills, but still allowed for an entertaining, up-tempo and physical brand of hockey.

Since the mid-1990s, though, the NHL has been plagued by this belief that the stars need to earn every inch of space they get out there. Maybe this is Bettman's NBA background coming through. And there's some truth to that...no one wants this to turn into a non-contact league.

But the league has allowed its stars to get manhandled in the neutral zones and open ice by mediocre players who resort to obstruction, clutching and grabbing because it's the only way these guys can keep up. And the longer these officials allow this to go unchecked, the more the league continues to cater to the mediocre player.

What was the one thing most people were talking about after Game Three? The six-minute stretch where it was back and forth, up-tempo, physical hockey. I even heard Joke Tirico and some of the mainstream media acknowledge it.

I'm hoping the NHL takes notice of that, because no one wants to see a game where the rules allow the star players to be stifled and shut down. It's what landed the NHL in the lockout - a boring product that no one wanted to watch on television.

@Jonny V: Dude, the fact that you walked up to a bunch of strangers and said "Free Candy??" like that made me respect you.

You sir, are the fucking man!

I didn't look into Gary's eyes for fear of being lit on fire.

@Jonny V

I went to an FSN pregame party at Doubletree since I won Watch and Win. I really wanted to say something to him, but he was talking to some other people. The girl who gave me the tickets introduced me to him. That was probably the coolest thing that's ever happened to me. Paul Alexander was there too, but I don't really give a crap about him.

Jonny V said...

Coffeytalk, almost forgot, your friends' Errey jersey was clutch.

They showed a clip of Malkin with his head buried in his hands in the locker room after the game on the news today. I feel terrible for him. One game at a time Geno. Wipe the slate clean...

Hip said...

That video pains me a bit... I didn't understand a lot of how it works back then and kinda thought the Pens won one year and the Caps would win the next.

But under these circumstances - it's exactly what I said yesterday. Coming back from 3-1 has been done before and it can be done again by this team this year.

Go Pens.

stokes said...

As for Geno, i'm not going to load a ton of shit on him about how he's played. he fucking knows already. But if there was ever a good time for him to get it together, tonight would be it.

Jonny V said...

BnG, I just thought to myself "Hell with it, here goes...Free Candy?" I said it to a group of people in the upper lot an hour earlier and got the strange looks someone else on here mentioned. And no problem with the purse guarding, it sucks having stuff stolen. Was not going to see that happen on my watch.

Eileen, glad to see an actual fan won at a Watch n' Win. Sounds like an awesome experience.

stokes said...

As I was walking the lots with the bag of Free Candy, i handed candy out to A LOT of people who had no idea what was going on. So, there's people out there that will take candy from strangers. And eat it.

That is the same reason I have a small amount of dislike for Family Matters and Fresh Prince. There is no surprise, but Fresh Prince is way worse. I can only laugh so much at a bunch of funny rich people. I will always love Roseanne and Home Improvement, though. Despite any predictability, both shows have smart humor. And I can't help but be attracted to a raging sarcastic bitch like Roseanne. She knows what's up.

I forgot to mention The Jeffersons before, which definitely deserves some proppage.
