Orpik was a bad, bad motherfucker tonight. I'm thinking when I get my white jersey it's going to have #44 on the back.

I guess only Pittsburgh gets penalties when they play tough in front of their net?

Evidently this is the case since through 3 games now the Dead Wings don't get called for doing exactly what Gill got called on.

Not to mention that no one seems to ever notice Kronwall's skates leaving the ice on practically every single hit he throws.

I know it's nothing new that NHL Reffing sucks and every team has legitimate gripes...I'd just LOVE to see some consistency before I go to my grave.

I missed out on the live C-blog and just finished watching the game on DVR. A few thoughts:

Sid was possessed and set the tone.

I'm not sure if the Wings thought they were playing basketball with all the picks they were setting, football with all the tackles, or soccer with all their diving. Whatev, the Pens played hockey for the first time in the series and won.

Gill owns Jokestrom and the only thing he can do about it is keep studying at the Osgood school of diving and hope to keep getting the calls.

Orpik was possessed on one shift and handed out more free candy on that shift alone than most people do on Halloween.

Flower, wow. More than solid tonight.

Roberts showed the young'uns the intensity they need. He did not look out of place when he was on the ice with Sid and Hossa and brought gritty play to the fourth line too. What a player!

Detroit fans should pay attention to the fans at the Igloo to see how good home fans get behind their team and make some noise.

Sweep? I guess not. If the Pens can hold serve on home ice again in Game 4, they even it up and steal a little momentum heading back to the Joe.

As possessed as Crosby was.

That was nothing, nothing compared to the crowd at Civic Arena.

Amazing. There was noise the entire time. The entire time.

When R.L. Stine was thinking about what to name his series of books, the arena tonight is what he focused on. Goosebumps.

If Detroit is hockey town what is Pittsburgh? Jo(k)e Louis Arena wasn't anywhere near as loud as the ol' Igloo.

So one of my friends here at OU who's never ever watched a hockey game before in her life decided tonight was finally the night she was going to come watch a game with me. And now we have a new hockey convert! I did tell her earlier this quarter that she wasn't allowed to start watching hockey unless she committed to the Pens (simply because we're the best...) Even before she watched her first Pens game, from everything I'd been relaying to her about the games and the team she was committed. And even when we sucked and couldn't score this weekend she still found a way to commit to the team (by being anti-Det. for their diving and pro-Pens for Robert's awesome hits on some people...)

Anyhows, yay for new fans! :)

I just got home from the game. A few thoughts:

1) I have never heard that building so loud. I've said that a few times this playoffs, and it just keeps getting louder. My ears are ringing. I have no voice at all. Pens fans rule the world.

2) Free Candy is on some brand of acid that hasn't even been discovered yet. Please, King Shero, re-sign him. That shift he had brought the entire arena to their feet.

3) Yay for Adam Hall. It's nice to see jobber players get rewarded. Hopefully Kennedy gets his goal in game 4.

dying alive said...

And as my friend and I were leaving the game, we were walking past that parking lot where people always stand and wait for player autographs. I'm staring straight ahead and I notice a really nice suit (I'm 5'2", so for anyone taller than 5'10" I generally notice their clothing first).

I look up at the guy, and it is none other than Alexander Ovechkin. Walking right out of that parking lot and up the hill on Center Avenue. He was with one guy who I assume was either his agent or security, but really...they made him walk out among the unwashed masses? He got past the first wave of people OK because it took a second to register who it actually was, but I'll bet he was mobbed halfway up the hill.

He's not nearly as ugly in person as he looks on TV. And he's a very sharp dresser.

letsgopsu said...

@ dying alive

Was it just me thinking this, or did it seem that the Mellon was just as loud during "The Shift" as it was during any of the goals. I know I was screaming my ass off when Orpik single-handedly decided, "No, you guys will not score right now. I will not let you."

eileenover said...

@dying alive

Ovechkin was sitting in a box right behind me and letsgopsu. Mark Messier and Gary Bettman were also in the box. When I was coming back from getting my food Bob Errey walked past me. I said "Hey Bob Errey" and he smiled and said "How's it goin." I was very happy.

the only time it got loud was:

A) a Goal [duh]
B) the guy twirling the octopus
C) showing Kid Rock on the jumbo

I think the acoustics in the Joe are bad: one level from the ice to the top...& their 'ceiling' is open with catwalks & beams that probably absorb sound rather than reflect it [I could just be talking out of my Franzen, so who there a soundologist in cblog...maybe I should call the Renaissance...I think their convention is in town!!!!]

I can see them being Hockeytown for:
Their History

Their fan support.

I had a nice discussion with this fellow outside the Joe [his young son kept on saying, 'Daddy, don't TALK to him, he's not wearing a Red Wings jersey!'] and talked to him about the attendance issues...he said is a combo of the economy been REALLY bad there compared to the rest of the country and that most 'fans' aren't that willing to drive into Detroit anymore....he said there's rumors that Ilitch has land about 30 minutes NW of the city & it's possible that they'd build a new arena there [posturingblog?]...that it would be good for the fans since the majority of the commuting fanbase travel from the North.

Beav said...

yeah I can't really blame them for not wanting to be in the shithole that is Detroit (especially at night). I respect Detriot's past but they better do something to fix "Hockeytown" or just call it "Pistonstown" and end the charade

Outside the arena was so loud after goals. I've been to some pretty huge college football games before with tens of thousands of drunk, screaming college students and to be able to compare the 5000 outside Mellon Arena to that is remarkable.

I guess I was in the wrong to ASSUME that if you went to a DETROIT hockey game, you'd know what radio station they're on.....

shame on me for 6 weeks for that assumption....

As has already been stated, it was constantly loud inside. The atmosphere was amazing. The seats were good too. Postgame Thoughts, dudes...

4. Folks, we got ourselves a bit of a series now.

5. Wait a minute...I didn't think this Pens team could play with this Wings team.

6. I disagreed with the decision to sit Legame in lieu of Sydor but Sydor was awesome tonight. I'm gonna stop questioning Coach Therrien now.

7. Whitney was awesome tonight as well. He's been getting nastier and nastier as the postseason has gone on.

8. Tonight was one of those nights when Sid was just a full step above everyone else on the ice.

9. If it was this loud on a Wednesday, how loud is that place going to be with 17,132 Pens fans who are going to have all Saturday to drink and party before the game?

10. Dear Ray Shero,

Brooks Orpik. Pay the man.

11. On Franzen's goal, it seemed like Scuds didn't realize he was as close to the boards as he really was, and it opened just enough of the middle to allow Franzen to get through. Nice goal by Franzen.

12. Maybe it's just me, but for a player who has made a very nice career for himself by playing in front of the net, Tomas Holmstrom seems to act surprised about the abuse he takes there.

13. Maybe it's just me, but Hossa and Malkin seem to be on the verge of a huge breakout game.

14. Game Four is now the biggest game of the year. One game at a time.

Pens fans, be awfully proud of yourselves tonight. Pierre Maguire couldn't hear himself think down on the ice; he mentioned it a few times. He couldn't believe how loud it got in the building. The whiteout looked awesome once again, and the crowd was a presence from start to finish.

You all represented the Penguins, the city and the fanbase better than anyone could've hoped. It was sixty minutes of insanity for Pens fans and sixty minutes of hell for the Wings.

So let's do it again on Saturday, eh?

Pensgirl said...

Stoosh, it's not just Whitney who's found the nasty in his game either. Sarge is sick and damn tired of not having his name etched in silver.

Unbelievable win.

#2. WWGRD? Hit anything in a red and white jersey. My god, talk about leading by example.

#3. Brooks Orpik is a scary, scary mo-fo. Please God, let him work things out with Coach T to stay here.

#4. Bing is a fucking MACHINE. He just went "fuck this shit" and owned their asses.

#5. Malkin had a nice hit (possibly in the second) and seemed like he had TONS more energy tonight. Next game = his.

#5. My dad wanted Hossa to bury one tonight so bad. He's a closet fan, I think.

#6. When my dad (who's a monster Habs fan, and has nothing but meh for the Pens) starts commenting on how bad the officiating is against the Pens (instead of pointing out what the Pens are getting away with ), you KNOW the officiating's bad.

Orpik was a complete beast. As said, someone get that on Youtube.

Gill made a complete joke out of Holmstrom.

I was sad to see LeGame scratched as he's one of my favorites, but the poor guy looked frightened and Sydor really brought something to the game tonight.

Sid was on fire.

Everyone played great. Kennedy needs a goal. Bad.

Really, anything said is just being repeated. Solid effort by the Pens.
