GameDay (75) -- Devils @ Penguins

This is the biggest game of the season to date.
That will change in a couple days when the Pens and Devils play again.

Tonight is huge.
Everyone knows it.
Can you remember the last time a regular-season game was this huge?

If you needed to be told that, you shouldn't even be here.

Lord Therrien puts out a call to arms. [PG]

"We're going to need our fans to be really loud," he said. "I know my players. They feed off the fans. ... It's not a coincidence the last month and a half we've been successful [at home] -- our fans are really loud."

After this game, both the Devils and Pens have seven games left.

Pens --- Devils

If you didn't hate all the other teams in the division now, buckle up.
We'll be rooting for one team one night, then wanting them to jump off a cliff 24 hours later.

And the worst thing about it is, what looked like a two-team race,
may now be a three-team battle, because the Rangers are out of their minds.

The day they brought old St. Francis hospital down

Found this on LGP:

So many huge games today/tonight in the East

Original sixblog game.
Bruins need a win. So do the Habs

Old-fashion hate in this one.
If Toronto wins, they are still breathing in the playoff race.
If they lose, it's bad for them.

You know what time it is now.

(To the tune of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia by Charlie Daniels Band)

Well the Devils came over to Pittsburgh
They were lookin' for some points to steal
They were in a bind, in a points tie
And willin' to make a deal
They brought up this old man
Playin' goalie, and playin' it hot
So Geno jumped up on a hickory stump
Said, Matry lemme tell you what
"I'm sure you already knew it
'Cause I'm a hockey player too
And if you care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you
Now you play pretty good hockey, boy
But give the Penguins their due
I'll bet a Mike Rupp goal
Against your soul
Just to think we're better than you"
Then a man said, "my name's Bugsy
And it might be a sin
But I'll take your bet
And you're gonna regret
'Cause tonight, the Pens will win"

So Mikey rousin' up your bench
And change those 4 lines hard
'Cause hell's broke loose in Jersey
And Jarkko's killin' retards
And if you win, you're closer to that banner in black and gold
But if you lose, the Devils have control

The Devils opened up the gate and said "We'll start this show"
Then Parise flew in on a breakaway, but yeah, he still blows
He pulled the puck across the ice and it made an evil hiss
Then the ghost of Scott Stevens joined in and it sounded somethin' like this

When the Devils finished, Georges said "well you're pretty good 'ol sons"
"But if you drop the gloves with me, you'd be better off to run"

Fire at the Igloo, run boys, run
Look, it's Marty's illegitimate son
Chickens in the locker room, pickin' their toes
Hey we got a powerplay, Go Sarge Go

The Devils bowed their heads because they knew that they'd been beat
Then they layed that conference lead on the ground at Mike Yeo's feet
Syko said "Devils just come on back if you ever wanna try again"
"I told you once, you sons of a bitch, the Steel City Line reigns again"

Fire at The Igloo, run boys, run
Look, it's Marty's illegitimate son
Chickens in the locker room, pickin' their toes
Like they say in Canada, "GO PENS GO"

Interesting fact: Gary Roberts was the only necessity for the destruction of the hospital.

All Gary Roberts did was look at the hospital and it crumbled in fear.

It may not be WWF, but there's a UWF marathon on ESPN Classic. It may not be the same as watching RAW or Smackdown, but there's something about watching old school rasslin' in a smoky hall with 500 people who are out of the minds, being sold on every move.

Bruno Sammartino is going commentary and Cowboy Bob Orton is next.

Stupid, stupid penalty by Ruutu. I really don't want to see him back next year. You just can't put your team shorthanded in games like this. Debs score on this opening PP and shut it down for the rest of the game. I've seen this fish fried before.

(Don't even know if that's an expression)

Anyone else notice that when Conklin first when on the air, FSN flashed "Ty Conklin, Penguins Forward"? Didn't correct it until the 3rd period.

Flyer Hater said...

I swear, Ruutu could look at the officials the wrong way and he'd get called for a penalty. He's the anti-Gary Roberts. Gary could bang Kerry Fraser's wife at center ice and the opposing team would get a penalty.

StatementGameBlog Thoughts...

1. Wow!

2. Holy shit!

3. Damn!

4. (Shaking head in disbelief)

5. To quote HCMT once more, "Wow!"

6. I'm a Pens fan and I'm speechless. I can't even imagine what the rest of the Eastern Conference is thinking as they watch this Pens team and then wonder what's going to happen when Sid and Roberts come back and everything continues to click.

7. If this is how good Evgeni Malkin is at 21 years old, I can't even begin to imagine what he's going to be like when he's 25 and he's made most of his major adjustments to the NHL game. Ray Shero needs to make sure that Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby always wear Penguins jerseys. There's no reason why this shouldn't happen.

8. Discussed this the other day with Focker and the Dickie Dunn crew up in F1...Outside of Letang, the USS Hal Gill very well might be my second-favorite Pens' defenseman. I don't know if he's ranked that high because I'm suprised that he's greatly exceeded my admittedly-low expectations or what. I just know I've convinced myself that Shero made a great deal to get this guy.

9. Watching Colorado-Edmonton highlights just now on the NHL Network, and I'm pretty sure Scott Hannan just did the best impression of a turnstile I've ever seen. Ales Hemsky just outskated him so badly, even Derian Hatcher thought it was funny. Colorado should've just saved themselves the $18 million, draped an Avs "Hannan" jersey over a pylon and stuck it on the blueline; the pylon might actually have a plus-rating once in a while.

10. I know Sydor (our consolation prize for not getting Hannan) hasn't worked out as well as we hoped, but can you imagine if Shero would've given Hannan four years, $20 million to beat that offer Hannan got from Colorado? Sometimes the best signings are the mistakes you let the other teams make.

you're a bit late if you were planning on going to the Pitt v. MSU game ;-)

Pitt = stunned

I Have Kasparaitis said...

Yeah!! Ryan Malone = first star of the game! (excuse, my unhealthy obsession with Bugsy) He is itching for a hat trick!

What is the deal with people trying to mess with Sarge? The Sens were being jerks and smacking him around, and then we gotta a horrible hit on him when they know they are gonna lose. Funny, though, that Steiggy said a good job of Whit stepping in when he wasn't even close to being on the ice. Good job of Orpik, Staal, and Dupuis stepping up to protect him. (Even if Staal couldn't fight to save his soul.) Just a lack of respect if you hit Gonch. (Zajac = ass)

My mom and brother are complaining Hossa doesn't do enough. Therefore, I am boycotting Pitt. Sorry Pitt basketball ...

Ruutu is playing some fine hockey as of lately. Someone worried about the return of Sid and Roberts? If anyone (forward-wise) should sit out, it should be Laraque or Minard. I like Minard, but I know he is more likely to sit than Laraque. Laraque is unnecessary. We have Malone, Roberts, Ruutu, Talbot, and a few others. I think BGL is a nice guy, but hockey is a competitive sport and we are working for the Stanley.

Anyone else insulted by Steiggy and Bob's trophy picks? Steiggy wanted to follow everything Bob did it seemed. Really, Ovie? He doesn't deserve it as much as Malkin. And I'm rooting for Luongo. I like the Canucks more than most teams. Too bad they lost to Wild. They play really solid. (When I suffer from Pens withdrawal, I watch anything on NHL network, meaning the Canucks usually)

Solid play in the third and second. Shero should be awarded with a medal of excellency.

In Malkin(and Malone)I Trust!!

@ erik k: that was a life changing song. Kudos! I can't believe no one else has commented on it. I have been gone most of the day and elected to watch the NCAA wrestling championships on TV over listening to the Pens on the internet (gah! I know. PSU and Pitt each had a champ and PSU was 3rd place as a team, kudos PA wrestlers!!!), but it was a pleasant experience checking the score on the net periodically. 1-1, then 2-1, then 3-1, then 6-1!!! then 7-1!!!! Awesome. Great effort by the team and by erik k before the game even started.

@ kaparitis: I agree about BGL. At this point, he is a bench player. His purpose on the team is to deter unnecessary attacks on our stars through the regular season. If any of these teams are still playing for the playoffs, they can't afford bad penalties now so they won't be roughing up players for no reason. Now, if the Cryers are playing the last two games with no hope of making the playoffs or of being eliminated, then BGL might have a role since they won't care what happens and may play their typical goon style, but otherwise it is typical playoff style, mostly goon-free, hockey from here on out and BGL can watch that from the press box.

1. Thanks, Duke, for obliterating 1/4 of my bracket for the second time in three years.

2. #1 seed UCLA went to the wire with #9 seed Texas A&M right now. Ben Howland jusht caaaaan't beeleeve whatsch gooooing on right noooowww.

3. Pitt - can't say I'm surprised they lost to Michigan State and I don't think there's much shame in losing to a team coached by Tom Izzo. The injuries to Cook and Fields knocked them all off their game, and even after Fields came back, you never seemed to know which Pitt team would show up.

They would've been out in the next round against Memphis anyway. Still, the shot to upset Memphis would've been nice.

Sam Young doesn't strike me as someone who is NBA-ready and he could definitely benefit from another year. Unfortunately, as we saw with Chris Taft, that's never stopped these guys from leaving in the past if they have people in their ears telling them they MIGHT be ready for the next level.

Dr. Turkleton said...

the pitt players were talkin' waaayyy too much trash after winning 4 straight in the BE tourney [I had MSU over pitt]

WVU win over duke [had that one too] should've asked me stoosh, know anybody who has good fares to PHX?

on to the Pens:

with a regulation Win v. the Devils...the Pens will hold the tiebreaker v. them if at the end of the regular season, they are both tied in points & wins....the Pens will have won the season series with 9 points [4-3-1] while the debs will have 8 points [4-4]....if the Pens win in OT or a SO v. the debs...then goal differential will be the next tiebreaker & currently we lead in that 29 to 11.

Ryan said...

Pens 7-1

Dr. Turkleton said...

↑ that is a regulation Win on 3/25 v. the debs to be more specific....

FH - Not sure I can call this Pitt team underachievers. Frustrating? Yes, because it always seems like they pick the NCAA tournament to have one of "those" games. I'm just not sure "underachieve" is the right word.

Given how poorly they shot the ball today and how on Neitzel was, it's a miracle they were in it as long as they were tonight, and they probably have Levance Fields to thank for that. He did his best to will this team into the Sweet Sixteen tonight. They needed big games from Young and Blair and they didn't really deliver (combined 8-for-23 from the field tonight). Blair, I can understand because he hit a wall down the stretch. Young better come back because NBA people are going to remember this night for a long time. And if they get ANYTHING from Ramon tonight, they win (1-for-9 from the field, clearly worn down by having to cover Neitzel).

Nevertheless, they went into the Big East tournament unranked and won four in four days, the last three over some of the Big East's best teams, so that's not a bad finish. If Dixon can ever find a way to bring in a lights-out shooter like Neitzel, it'd be great.

Stoosh said...

DR. TURK - I should've known better than to pick this Duke team to go as far as I did...I had them going to the Final Four. Something about this Duke team just didn't feel right and damn near losing to Belmont in the first round confirmed that.

Jonny V said...

That would have been a good match up, but Memphis' dribble-drive offense would have probably run circles around us. In my pensblog bracket, I still have my final four alive, with UCLA, Stanford, Louisville, and Davidson. I will never in my life pick Duke to win it all (Final Four at the most), because I never want to be in the position of rooting for them to win.

jyo, gotta agree with u re: BGL will prove useful before the season is out. Something tells me Philly would love nothing else than seeing us weakened entering the playoffs. Jagoffs.

Afer re-reading that, I realized that I pretty much described what qualifies a team as an underachiever - namely, coming up short on the game's biggest one-and-done stage.

So, FN, I recant my statement. Pitt probably did underachieve by losing today, given their place as a #4 seed, the way they were playing coming into the game and the way they dominated Oral Roberts a couple of days ago.

Pitt fucks my bracket every year. I always have them going a game or two past when they inevitably sputter. But mark my words, the one year I have them exiting early, they'll win the whole fucking thing. So it's a delicate balance. But I still have the most possible points of anyone in my class league so things are still ok. For now. UCLA gave me palpitations tonight.

Off to Montana tomorrow. I'm converting the entire Blackfeet Indian Reservation to Pens fans for this upcoming playoff run. Make me proud boys. An entire Nation will literally be watching (and by watching I mean following newspaper scores I can hopefully get by Pony Express or something... Yikes!).

Anyone hear what Jim Hughson did for CBC today? He called the Edmonton-Colorado game (btw, I really hope the Oilers make the playoffs just to face the Wings) in the afternoon and then later that night called the Flames-Wild game. Hughson=Gary Roberts of announcing.

PS - back to the game... Is Staasly really starting to get lukewarm or are the stats deceiving me?

Stoosh said...

FLYER HATER - And in between all that, Hughson still has time to be the play-by-play voice for EA Sports's NHL series...something like ten years running.

And I'm a little frightened that I actually pay attention to stuff like this.

HIP - Nope. I don't think another gone through a season like this...Staal should have somehwere around 35 goals this year, but he manages to hit a post, JUST miss the corner or edge of the net, or the goaltender makes some sort of other-worldly save on him.

Here's hoping karma kicks in and Staal gets the goal that sends us not jinx this thing.
