Perhaps it's fate that it's almost a year to the day that Lemieux announced the Pens were staying.
They played Buffalo that night.

And Buffalo's in town tonight again.
7:30
Crosby felt something in his ankle at practice this morning and will not be playing tonight.
Talbot's not playing.
Petr Sykora, a warrior, when hearing the Crosby was gonna be out,
decided to suit up despite back pains.
Maybe 'cause he's helped carry the Pens for the past 50 days.

Madden just said on his show that Crosby sitting out is completely precautionary and there's a great chance he'll play against Filthy.
So it's game 71 and Sid is out, I think we all know what Malkin will be up to tonight.
Syk Pete, what a warrior, glad to hear he'll be giving it a go.
Go Pens.
Looking forward to the game tonight. Lets go James.
Madden keeps contrasting Crosby and Terrel Pryor. haha
i do believe that i have resorted just laughing in disbelief upon hearing of these injuries. it just doesn't seem to end, eh?
Peters is suspended for a game. So no Laraque vs. Peters tonight.
Honestly, I don't think we're going to realize until we look back on this season how much Sykora has been an integral part of this team and a great pickup by King Shero. Aside from that rough patch where Lord Therrien banished him to third line oblivion, he's been a consistent producer.
The Pens have him signed through the end of next season, right?
yes, him and sydor signed two year deals.
Talbot and Bing both have the same recurrence of the same injury, on the same night. Hopefully these ankles don't affect the playoffs, especially with MAF. I have faith in the Conk, but if MAF were to go down again, Sabu is all we'd have.
Sykora has joined the Church of Roberts.
Something I am concerned about (well, a little bit) with all of these injuries is just how well the guys will play together once everyone is good to go. You can have a line with the most talented players in the world, but if there's no chemistry...
That's why it is really important to try to get everyone back and healthy as soon as possible. The playoffs is not the ideal time to work out the kinks.
That being said...
Go Pens!!!
Let's do this shit!
they will have the chemistry going into the playoffs. I think its smart to sit the guys during this light stretch. When they all come back there aren't going to be any breaks until summer. I think i=this is one last deep breath.
I think Syk was one of the better, if not, best off-season acquires. Whenever I watch, which i cant because im in illadelphia, he always seems to get those nitty gritty goals.
Go Pens!
Remember how everyone was bitching that Shero didn't sign Paul Kariya to be a top winger to play with Sid or Malkin?
Let's Compare:
Kariya: 15 goals makes 6 mil a year
Sykora: 22 goals makes 2 mil a year
hmmmm...In Shero We Trust.
Chemistry doesn't score goals.
Marian Hossa scores goals.
Let's go Pens!
STEUBENVILLE!!!
what chat is everyone using this week? :o
Should we be fortunate enough to sneak a win, we'll be once again 1st in the conference. What a crazy conference this year.
Nice Shot Pig Nose!!! You Bring That Shit To Me Tyler!!!
Oh My Roberts.
Eaton back for conference finals?
Pens nation = STUNNED.
Eaton back for conference finals?
Unreal.
The Steigy curse lives...
Gee, Sykora went 24 games without a penalty...
Within 5 minutes, Sykora 2 minutes... holding.
When I heard Steig and Bobby talking about Eaton returning, I almost fell off the couch.
me=stunned
and me=the happiest
I received his jersey as a Christmas gift this year and it was one of the greatest gifts EVER.
Lets do this second period!
does anyone have that connolly and kotalik link from the last buffalo game?
Paetsch may be down, but Kenny the Cotton Candy Guy is alive. I heard a few "Cotton Candy! Cotton Candy!" yells when they took a close shot to the ice.
(and yes, I did wait to see if Paetsch was OK before I posted. I'm not that much of an a-hole.)
Is this the song?
laffy taffe!!!11!one!!1
I went ahead and made some high quality WWGRD vinyl stickers here if you want to grab one.
That pk made me melt. I wish USS Hal Gill had banked that one in.
On another note, I was at the Pens Store the other day to pick up my St. Patrick's Day gear and I noticed that on the racks of Pen's tees with players' names on the back, they had a bunch of Nasseredine tees. Wonk?
I'm glad they expanded with more names on tees this year but Nas? They need to replace that with some Taffe. Laffy Taffy deserves a shirt.
also, Christensen jersey's are on sale. They are officially out of Colby tees and jersey's though.
GO PENS!
woops. punctuation misshap. not sure why i felt the need to make jerseys possessive.
andiwasanenglishmajorblog...
J.S. - 3-0 lead heading into the third is awesome and perfectly worthy of making my night. But the Kotalik and Connolly song is a perfect bonus. That's awesome!
I think I sent that in on an earlier game. Kotaliiiiiiiiiiiiiik, n Connnnnelly!
If memory is right, it's actually sampled from an old Steve Winwood song and when he found out it was sampled, he said he'd re-record the vocals.
Garydammit, Joke-in Hecht scores. :(
Ok, so being a pens fan thats unfortunately located in SoCal for the time being; i have no choice but to use Center Ice.... so theres this feature tonite called "Ovechkin cam" which is basically the caps/flames game, except it has the camera on alexander ovechkin the entire time. All i have to say about this is.... what the f*@#^?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_on_Me_(Eric_Prydz_song) <-- sample included
dammit, another Buffaslug score, a shorty too
4-2 Pens
#36 Connor James
#37 Jarkko Ruutu
#38 Jeff Taffe
On the same line, I wonder how often that happens
I feel kind of strange doing this because I hate pimping my own stuff.
But it's almost 10:00 PM here in Pittsburgh and that means it was almost a year ago that KDKA broke the news that many of us were waiting years to hear - the arena deal was done; the Pens were staying in Pittsburgh. "Go crazy, folks, go crazy," as the Gunner used to say.
Speaking from a purely personal level, as I said in the previous thread's comments, March 12, 2007 became one of my top three favorite days as a sports fan ever. The Penguins are far and away my favorite team...nothing else really comes close. Following them through the arena saga over the last several years and seeing the team go to the very edge of extinction in Pittsburgh was an exhausting, emotional experience that I'm not sure I can ever truly describe. Nevertheless, I gave it the old college try here.
This was something I've wanted to write since this time last year, and I just wanted to share this with the rest of the Pensblog community.
J.S. - Not sure on the Connolly and Kotalik song...that sounds an awful lot like the original words to the song. Either way, it's hilarious.
Now this is what I call beautiful...
Toronto 3
Philly 2
FINAL
I can't wait for the recap of this game. Shame on me for six weeks for giving my tix to my cousin. I thought it was going to be a 'nothing special' game.
Jayzus, I've seen mass escapes from mental wards that were more under control than that game.
Cookies and punch for everyone!
steubenville!
steubenville!!!
Unreal. Who didn't get a point tonight is the question. What a show considering the injuries. Pens absolutely own Miller.
Only neg is that Malkin only got one.
Go Pens.
they did the same thing in the pens-caps game, only they had one for crosby and one for ovechkin. Methinks Malkin needs one too.... Fun game to watch, and how about the minor leaguers getting it done?
reason for the scoring explosion?
"Penguins GM Ray Shero needed seven stitches to close a gash that occurred during an afternoon pickup game at Mellon Arena"
Malsykalone. mark it down.
HIP - We need to find a way to Buffalo in the playoffs because this would be a great matchup for the Pens. The Penguins have been Miller's worst nightmare this year.
That said, I hate to see what ownership and management is doing to the Sabres. I grew up in Erie, which is basically Buffalo's goofy little brother and one of my good friends back home was a Sabres fan. Lindy's a good coach and it's amazing to see how quickly they've dismantled what took them the better part of six or seven years to really build up there.
Bernier was a nice acquisition, but management really botched the Briere situation. Drury was gone no matter what but they never really made a serious attempt to keep Briere, despite the fact that he was a perfect fit for that system. Briere and Campbell NEVER should've been allowed to come close to the free agent market.
And the free agent mismanagement could rear its ugly head once more next year as Ryan Miller's contract is up after next season.
stoosh, great article
From the ESPN recap game notes:
Penguins GM Ray Shero needed seven stitches to close a gash that occurred during an afternoon pickup game at Mellon Arena.
.....when your GM in embracing the ways of Gary Roberts, you know you're in good shape.
KENNEDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
kennedy
what a game. fucking awesome. nothing else to say.
stoosh, if erie is the goofy little brother i cant imagine what my hometown warren, pa is... the retarded cousin I guess.
Let's just imagine folks. We'll be getting our whole first line back on Sunday.
Talbot-Crosby-Hossa
Malone-Malkin-Sykora
Dupuis-Staal-Kennedy
What team in hockey has more offensive depth than that?
1stplaceintheconferenceblog!
where's thems christensen jerseys at ??
Stoosh: phenomenal stuff. I remember that night, I was @ work till close and I got about 3 phone calls from my friends within 2-3 minutes but I couldn't take them, and @ that point I had to assume the worst happened. It got a little dusty @ work too.
I was fortunate to have tickets to the Buffalo game the night after. I've also been there for Lemieux's 600th, His initial jersey retirement w/ all the video congrats on the jumbotron, & Jagr's Game 6 OT winner against the Devils in '96. That night against Buffalo ranks right up there w/ the rest of them as one I'll never forget, arena atmosphere included.
Staff if Stoosh wouldn't mind I'd love for you guys to link this article in a post so fans can relive it all.
Let's Go Pens!
@ stoosh: You’re my hero.
Warning: Contains foul language, inner bitch & underage drinking.
Dear Slugs,
F**k you. I wanted to believe, but you turned me into a raging alcoholic by second period. I can only handle so much at age 20. I gave up all hope and started cheering for the Pens. Then, you taunted me with goals. In the wise words of Cartman: I hate you guys.
However, Nathan Paetsch (ssccchh), I’m glad you’re not dead (send a thank you note to the Mellon Arena). Laraque is the devil and I’m no longer amused by his antics. Vanek, I HATE goalie trippers but you showed signs of…life. Blah.
BOOOOOO!
Danielle
I agree with you stoosh...it's a damn shame what Buffalo did with those players, I often wonder what the point is in owning a team if you don't want a real contender every year, and these people should wonder why the fans stay away...Pens played great tonight...I posed a question a while ago when I asked when the pens last played a game they dominated from start to finish and this has to be the first time in months...Phil Bourque was right, just shoot the damn puck...good things happen...something happened from the third period in the caps game...instead of trying to set up the perfect pretty goal, maybe they learned that talented players make their own luck and 4 or 5 unspectacular goals are worth more than 1 or 2 beautiful set-ups...The USS Hal Gill and Dupuis will undoubtedly be the best acquisitions of the trade deadline, no jokin...

DAMMIT J.S.!!! that was what i was gonna post for when i got home from the game! i love that stupid website.
the song is called Valerie from Steve Winwood. the chorus is like " Valerie, call on meeee, call on me, Valerie. call on meeee,..." you get the point.
DOMINATION!!!! How does Geno only get ONE POINT out of this awesome fiasco?
Great to see Dani showed after the game....

I am not registered. I will eventually. I have never posted here. Guys know the 89 year old Woman shown pre-game and during the first intermission? I met that lady before the Steelers loss to the Jags in the playoffs outside of the stadium. I walked up to her and asked, "How many of these have you been too?" Meaning Steeler playoff games. She said, "Well all of them." Then asked me, "Is this your first?" I told her, "No I was there when we couldn't score from 3 yards against the Chargers in that AFC Championship game." She said, "Well maybe this will be different." I offered the lady a beer and she denied me. She had her own. Then thought I did not have a ticket and started asking people. I had no Idea she was literally one of the first Pens fans. That is until my buddy calls me before the game and says "turn on FSN, you are about to lose your mind." This is a true story...
email: jrd5000@psu.edu
The Pens have 87 points through 71 games played. Omenblog?
Connellyyyyyyy and Kotalik!
Sweet.
Minard for MVP?
And how about Malkin taking over that 5-minute penalty kill? I am going to hell for saying "Jesus Christ, look at that guy. LOOK AT HIIIIIM!!"(second part said in Homer voice) about a million times.
The USS Hal Gill...number 2 in your programs...number 1 in the denfensive zone and in your hearts...

They look great to me!
We really haven't seen enough of Hossa to say yet. The ten minutes he was in the first game didn't look too shabby though.
Since Shero's proven 2 out of 3 so far...I still 'Trust in Shero' and am looking forward to some electrifying stuff soon!
H-O-S-S-A
Very true seeker...how about Shero with the stiches...very Roberts-esque...makes you proud that your team's GM is a tough sonofabitch
i was talking to a guy while taking a leak at the game and we were talking The Pensblog.
The Pensblog is a big deal.
i'm out.
Stoosh-
Loved your article! Thanks for the walk down memory lane. Was it only a year ago that we were on the brink of losing the Pens? I remember getting physically sick at just the thought of them leaving town. Now, I'm happier than a pig in you-know-what! Keep on writing.
Nick Saia (USA)-
I placed an order for a couple window decals - great idea! Are bracelets ever going to be available again????
Loved the story about one of the original boosters. Hopefully, that will be me in 40+ years:D
Looking forward to this weekend. I'll be at both games. Hope the guys are able to pace themselves - 7:30 pm Sat. night then 12 noon on Sun. - that doesn't leave them much time to rest and catch their breath.
LET'S GO PENS!!!!!
daismog - nice stat catch. definitely an omen.
Ahhh, March 13th, far and above the best day of last year. Does anyone else (in Pitt) remember that is was like seventy degrees outside?
I was in Pitt for spring break, and caught that game, sitting right on the glass, right next to the Sabers' box. Incredible.
And staff, for your last mention about Jason Botterill, you should care who he is, because he monitors and controls the team's salary cap. And he is a really nice guy.
go pens!
Coming soon: Gary Roberts and the USS Hal Gill on the ice at the same time, playing for the Penguins.
There's a thought to keep you warm at night.
Yeah...Shero with stitches and the 80+ y/o lady were both big deals.
Gotta say though that the Laraque elbow was uncharacteristically unsporting of Gentleman George. He deserved the ejection.
I just read this stat in a Mike Prisuta article:
Ty Conklin was back in the nets for this one, leading the Pens onto the ice while leading the NHL in save percentage (.928) and with a higher winning percentage (.607) than any of the top 10-winningest goalies in the league this season.
Never posted before either, but I read the Pensblog & the comments everyday. I keep converting people over to it. Tonight at the game, more than once I heard people around me referring to the Pensblog.
Yes. The Pensblog is a big deal.
Keep up the great work.
Raybin-the awesomeness of the USS Hal Gill and Gary Roberts on the sime patch of ice might actually destroy Mellon Arena...its like when Chuck Norris and Mr. T. entered the same bar...judgement day...seeker-we will no doubt have the best goaltending depth in the playoffs...having two no.1 goalies is a problem many teams would love to have
And I was going to ask this earlier, but forgot...Has anyone else been to the website that is selling the tickets for the season-openers in Sweden? If so, were you ever able to make the site English?
I can't freaking get around because I have no clue what is going on, and I want to buy tickets. No good. :(
7:30 Saturday?
Wha?
Guh?
Brett-
Christensen jerseys are on sale at the Pens Store in Melon Arena.
I've been waiting for this game for awhile so I could bust out the winter Classic tee. Glad the Dunder Mifflin boys went to work. Congrats to Minard with his first beautiful NHL goal!
I am super pumped for Sunday. I just have to figure out a way to be alive after Saturday early morning through late night St. Pat's day celebrations.
pensblog reader, samuelsson offered me and the gf tickets to the sweden games. hopefully, we'll have the money to attend. /awesome
So this is the first game I missed in weeks. I'm home for spring break and do not get FSN Pittsburgh on my side of the state. I go to a Reading Royals game. I hang out with friends for a while. I think, ok, I'm finally home. I can check the Pens score. Nothing could have prepared me for that. Wow.
And I'm terribly disappointed that I missed the greatest thing to happen this season: Minard scoring a goal. Where the hell did that come from. Maybe we should be bringing up more baby pens. E-Z passes for everyone!
KENNEDY!
Shame on me for having to give up my ticket tonight because of work. Christ. 7-3? I still can't wrap my feeble little brain around it.
As for the anniversary... I have to preface it with this: I grew up in Michigan as a typical die-hard Wings fan. As much as I loved the team, I could never afford the trip to the Joe. In the summer of '06, I moved down to Pittsburgh for a change of scenery and within the first week of being here, my erstwhile girlfriend told me she had purchased season tickets for the Penguins.
Needless to say, by the time November rolled around last season, I was getting caught up in all the hoopla. I felt the disappointment when the Isle of Capri deal fell through, and goddamn me if I didn't feel the elation when the news broke that the Pens were going to stay. That just meant that I would be able to enjoy going to see the greatest show on ice for years to come.
All that being said, I cannot wait for Sunday. Lets. Go. Pens!
j.s.- yes that was the song i was talking about. thanks so much... that page is great!
