Three Years Ago

February 16, 2005

The day the music died.

Thanks to [Kuklas Korner] for the horrid reminder.

If anyone remembers the complete chaos that lived in the those days.
Rumors of the season being saved floated everywhere.
Eklund became a big deal.
Hockey blogging wasn't even a thought.

Horrible times. But we got Sid because of it. It was needed at the time.

Dan Patrick was a big deal

  Sick.

@Flyer Hater
Seriously. Patrick's narration made that piece.

The dominance of the footage in that video is unrivaled.

that's the most/longest hockey has been shown on the 4-letter word network since the lockout

man, i miss NHL2night

Fleury29, it makes me realize how much I really miss Gary Thorne. He was the ultimate voice for hockey (maybe next to Bob Cole). "Here he comes, here he comes, Mario Lemieux, hang on, HE SCORES!!!!!, oh you gotta love it." Chills, everytime.

Could you imagine Emrick on the call? Lemieux, scoooooooooooooooooooooahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhresssssssssssssssssssssseeeeeeeeeeeeeesahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhf. Barf.

Ugggg....

After winning last night, Robert Morris loses tonight by a brutal 7-2.

Gary Thorne was awesome, chills every time i see that goal. actually, chills pretty much any time i see a Mario Lemieux goal.

of course espn had to do something stupid at the end and bring a different sport into it

Flyer Hater... for real

Gary Thorne, what a human. Clement was awesome, too.

There was an amazing save Tom Barrasso made against John LeClair in the 90's and the clip is so much more exciting because Thorne had the call. I had that on video somewhere and I must've watched it 1000 times right after it happened.

The Clip Is Here

Second only to Mike Lange (and, perhaps, in some respects, better than Lange) Gary Thorne is the man.

I want to hear the ESPN National Hockey Night theme music again and god dammit I want to hear Gary Thorne say, "ESPN's National Hockey Night coming to you from Pittsburgh, I'm Gary Throne..."

A man might need a new pair of pants after hearing something like that.

I just realized I spelled his name "Throne" once in my comment... strangely appropriate in this case.

For those that subscribe to Netflix, and a complete loser like me looking for something to do on a Saturday night, 'The Rocket' (new movie about Rocket Richard) is viewable on Netflix's 'online' instant viewing.

I know TPB made a big deal about this in a post a while back.

It deserves it.

Fleury29, it isn't Thorne introducing a Pens game but it's still outstanding anyway

@Flyer Hater.

Chills. The hair stood up on my arms.

The thematic music, the horrible CGI goalie masks, The Quebec Nordiques.

In the mid-to-late-1990s, that was what life was all about. National Hockey Night was a big, big deal. In those days the cable system where I lived (Missouri) didn't have ESPN2 so that was all I got.

Brett said...

I don't know if it's widely available or not, but many years ago I managed to snag a copy of the full version of ESPN's hockey night theme. If anybody would like it, I will find a way to post it somewhere.

Fleury29 said...

Brett, yes please. I need a new ringtone and I could never get the Mike Lange sound files to convert from .wav to MP3 without being corrupt.

National Hockey Night theme would be a close 2nd.

FLEURY29 - ESPN's NHL coverage and NHL2Night in the mid-1990s helped get me through college. That was all must-see TV at my fraternity house when I was in school.

I just can't believe there was a day when ESPN valued hockey as a real sport...

FireFox said...

Ugh. All these videos just brought back all sorts of good memories of hockey. I really do miss ESPN and Gary Thorne doing these games. Verses just doesn't have what it takes nor did they have a 2nd channel that they are willing to show frequent games on. I miss NHL 2 Night and I miss The Mullet. Damn you Gary Bettman...DAMN YOU!!!

Chris said...

I found the National Hockey Night theme online by Googling it. Between that and the NBA on NBC's theme during the mid-90s, you couldn't ask for better sports theme music.

Greatest Goal Call Ever?

Sure, it is to me because I'm a pens fan, but whatev.

I had to mention that I just watched it again, and got chills. It's the 10th time in a row now.

Fleury29 - "a man might need a new pair of pants after hearing something like that".......what a great line.

Got to see a few minutes of the MAF'er today on NHL network's replay of the 2004 World Juniors. As good as Conkblock has played, I think it will be a bit of a relief for the locker room to get him back.

Also got to see the WBS Pens Friday...they were wearing jerseys I hadn't seen before...yellow with the simple black P on the front. Pretty cool stuff.

since tomorrow's game isn't on fsn, does anybody know of a bar on the south side of pittsburgh/anywhere in the general vacinity that has center ice? i planned my day around watching this game and i'll be damned if i have to miss it

bbbbrian said...

Damn I was at that overtime Flyers loss. Wow did that suck. They quit serving beer after the end of the 2nd too.

canaanregulatesblog said...

i think the game will be on FSN tomorrow. The game was a national game that got switched because of Sid's injury.

don't worry about it, pens locals, it will be on your affiliate. as for me, i'll have to endure the opposing team's feed. gdamnit i hate away games.

That video was rather depressing. Haha... But yes, we needed to go through that to get Sid. Still can't believe we got him sometimes.

lockout led to two things - me having nothing better to do than go to Oriole's games as I live three blocks from Camden Yards and the great Gary Thorne being reduced to calling play by play for them including that 30 to whatev trumping of them last year that was like the worst lost in modern baseball history or something.

that video gave me chills... I hated the season without hockey :(

Did anyone watch Knight Rider tonight? Not getting William Daniels to do the voice of K.I.T.T. was a huge mistake.

That show won't last two seasons.

Ford Mustang? Pleeeeeeeeeeease.
