Pens Win

Recap won't be up until tonight.

Huge win.

[Rudy Kelly Stunned]

.............................

Pens in first place thanks to the Flyers losing.

Matt P. from the [700 Level] sent this through.

Shocking situation in Philly today as a Linesman takes a skate to the face:

Ouch

What the hell is wrong with those Flyers? They saw the linesman down and decided to cause trouble.

Awesome win!! Malkin dominated, and Malone killed!! Fantastic! Good defensive performance for most of the game. Sabu did good ... Staal is getting better and better.

Cool to see the original Bugsy Malone ... seems tensions have declined thanks to his son being amazing.

I read an article saying that Kennedy didn't go down to minors for conditioning, but "because he needs to play." (Quote by Therrien)

Great job, guys ... how will Therrien change things up when Sid the Kid and Roberts make their returns? Our lines look so good, I'm clueless...

Korn said...

Lines when Sid and Roberts return:

Roberts-Crosby-Colby
Sykora-Malkin-Malone
Petersen-Staal-Christensen
BGL-Talbot-Ruutu

Can't break up that Malkin line.

Korn said...

Or maybe EC on the top line with Roberts on the third. That makes more sense.

riley cote with another "win" from all that mma training. sweet

who the fuck is peterson

christina said...

yikes, that vid is terrifying. pens better have their heads on swivels tomorrow - you never know when you're on the ice with the flyers.

agreed about not breaking up the malkin line, korn. time to let both sid and geno have their own lines, permanently. 1a and 1b indeed.
personally i'd like...
kennedy - sid - EC
sykora - malkin - malone
roberts - staal - army
BGL - talbot - ruutu (or hall, if need be)

Cote = AHL jobber who doesn't deserve to be in the NHL

downie is a douche. BGL needs to give him a piece of his mind.

There is no way Colby Armstrong should get anywhere near the first line when Sid gets back. He's a pretty worthless player now and has done nothing to earn an honor like playing with Sid. If there's one play i'd like to see go at the deadline it would be Armstrong. Get George Carlin in the locker room to make Sid laugh because that's all that Armstrong is good for now.

Solid win, Go Pens.

Mike Georger said...

adam hall should not make it back on to this roster, hes absolutely worthless.
if malkin is winning the points race when sid gets back, he should win the hart trophy

With EC playing so well with Staal and Max, I'd be loathe to break up that line, even it meant a "promotion" to the 1st line for EC. I think he's playing the best hockey of his career right now and I wouldn't mess with it.

Awesome win today, can't WAIT for tomorrow's game!

that vid was crazy. i was at a nailers game once when a player got flipped over from a hip check and cut a guys face open like that. crazy stuff.

seeker said...

My question about the video is exactly why three fights broke out simultaneously at all? I could see Downey fighting the guy that checked him perhaps but what were the other two all about?

The Cryers are totally out of control.

seeker said...

I have to disagree with those that think Colby and Hall are worthless.

Colby has a chemistry with Sid when they are linemates.

Hall gives 110% every shift.

I am an idiot, I meant Kennedy.

po said...

wow... i think my sister could beat up cote... he is the worst wanna be good fighter ever

Tee said...

the pens really dont need to worry about the flyers goonery... BGL is enough of a deterrent and I'm sure he'll smack cote up, and malone can handle smith, ruutu would destroy downie, and talbot and armstrong can hold their own... if the flyers want to try playing dirty the pens can put them in their place.

John said...

I don't know if anyone noticed it, but we are only 3 points back from the sens. weren't they a million points up on us earlier this season?

Todd said...

FWIW, EC had more hits today than BGL. Twice the icetime, but who's counting?

Stoosh said...

Flyerhater - This might be my favoritism for Army speaking a little bit here. Army is a pretty solid forechecker and a decent presence in the corners and on the boards in the offensive zone. He cycles the puck well, too, and in this offense, that will eventually free up some space for Sid.

His forechecking abilities are what help keep him on that top line when Sid's in there. Army is a pretty relentless player on the forecheck, and he's caused his fair share of turnovers. If he can corral a puck off a turnover, he almost always takes a look to the middle of the ice because he knows Sid is either there or on his way.

Eventually, Army will find his way back down to the third line and that's where he'll ultimately be most effective for this team. That'll happen once Shero secures a solid scoring winger to play on Sid's line (Sykora and Malkin are too good together right now...no way I'm breaking them up).

Ashley said...

John - we may be only 3 points behind the Sens right now, but I think it'll be 5 points by the end of the night. Ottawa's up 6-1 on Montreal right now in the third period...but your overall point is spot on - the Pens are not that far off from first in the conference.

With how well the pens first and second lines are playing right now, were I coaching the Pens and Sid was ready to play tomorrow, I'd put him on the third line.

yoi

Does the fact that I like when they play Paramore at the arena make me strange?

I think it does.

anyway
Geno sure was pissed he missed that empty netter... I shat myself when he was slow to get up when he just fell into the boards right before that. It was an uncomfortable drive home...

Hip said...

I have to agree with Stoosh on the Army debate. There's no reason to add anything else because he made all my points for me. As for Hall - dude's got everything you want in a fourth liner.

Re: the linesman. Nastinessblog. This is why face masks have to be manditory.

Huge win today. Huge game tomorrow.

Flyer Hater said...

Solid points, Stoosh. I just wish Colby would play just as well when he's not on Sid's line. He becomes invisible on the third line.

Was Beech playing today? I swear Steiggy didn't call his name once.

Mike Georger said...

sure hall has what you want in a fourth liner, but id rather have ruutu (who actually has some talent when he turns it on) and bgl. but i wouldnt say hall is doing more than the guys from wilkesbarre as far as earning a roster spot. keep him on for injury protection but he shouldnt be bumping anyone out of a spot

Downie's skate cuts ref, THE IRONKNEE! Too much. Coburn had to have emergency ass surgery today. He busted a glute. He is one of Phillys better D men. That should help. Lets go Pens! Beat them on the ice and in the alley. They will be hitting Malkin to knock him off his gams. Take it to the bank. Hope we send the Flyers to the netherworld for eternity.

However I will settle for BGL messing up Brierre's face so he looks like he was drug around by his feet around the rink, face down. And a win.

Hip said...

flyer hater - not realizing Beech is in the game is probably for the best.

leaveitatthatblog.

Flyer Hater said...

I just watched the Flyers game from last year on the Penguins greatest games DVD. The way to beat them is to not change your game and goon it up but to take advantage of their dumb plays.

For example Fedoruk took a run at Malkin, took and penalty and we scored on the ensuing powerplay.

Granted, those are two different teams but the Flyer way hasn't and will never change.

You can't out Flyer the flyers so don't even try. Like Herb Brooks said, play your game.

paekhead said...

in attendance today...crowd was weak, anyone else agree? i was in section C18, and for 3 out of the 4 goals (the ones occuring on the opposite end of the ice from C18), only about 18% of my section stood, and only 40% of the 18% clapped or hollered. something needs to be done. please let me know your thoughts. go pens!

Stoosh said...

FLYER HATER - Don't get me wrong...given the way Army played in 05-06, I thought he had 25-goal, 60 point potential as a winger. 16-24-40 in 47 games meant a pace of 0.85 points a game. Project that over an 82-game season and you're looking at a 28-goal, 70-point season. On top of that, if you remember back to that 05-06 season, he scored some awfully nice goals...goals that players who project as career third-liners don't often get.

I'm still hoping Armstrong develops into that player, but he probably won't. Most scouts pegged him as a solid third-line energy guy and he seems to be following that trend.

He reminds me a lot of Mike Ricci or maybe a more skilled version of Kris Draper. Ricci's career numbers come out to an average of about 18 goals, 45 points a year. Draper's are less, but he's been an excellent penalty killer over his career, and I think there's a reason Detroit has kept him around.

Teams that win Cups do so because they have guys like Armstrong on their team.

Laketon TV said...

kenny melvin, so you are basing game strategy of the flyers from a game from last year? wow.

Stoosh said...

PAEKHEAD - Crowds are different this year because it's a different crowd. The team took a lot of the seating that had been going to Student Rush tickets over the last two years and sold them off to season ticket packages. While I'd like to think those tickets were bought up by people who love hockey and love the Pens, a substantial portion of those tickets also went to corporations and other people who bought tickets simply because this is the hot new team in town.

The Pens are a business and it's certainly their right to make money, so I can't fault them for that. Keep in mind, too, NHL teams make most of their revenue off of ticket sales. So I won't really complain about it because in the long run, it'll hopefully be a big reason why they'll be able to keep the marquee players.

But I do agree...the crowds seem to be different this year.

It should be a great game tomorrrow. Let's hope that Nittymaki can keep his solid play and steal a much needed win in Pittsburgh.

Dr. Turkleton said...

@ killadelphia

let's hope not.

Army's play the past couple of games has been subpar for the way he usually plays...he skates as if he's in pain some shifts...i remember him taking a big hit v. the Canes last Thurs & don't know if it's related to his previous hip injury from earlier in the year...but on some shifts, he seems to be not up to 100%

geezer said...

Repeat. Coburn, Philly's leading plus/minus D man and second leading D man in scoring will be out for at least three weeks. He busted his ass muscle(Glute) and required emergency surgery at the Rangers game today. This will help a lot and really hurt the Flyers. OK?

Go to Phillys sight and click breaking news.

seeker said...

dr.:

Right on! Colby's been looking like he's not skating at 100% since hurting that hip. He's too upright for sure.

If I could add another to Colby's better points, don't forget that he, Malone, Staal, and Max are key PK guys.

No Pens on tv here in upstate NY today. Plus the cable company changed their system again. I was getting center ice channels on my HDTV for free. The TV was able to pick them up. Its been like that all most of the season. Since the free preview last week I lost them.

Anyway ended watching the Rangers game and saw the linesman hit live. The announcers kept saying it was a stick, but on the first replay you could see it clearly was a skate. 20 stitches and a broken nose.

There was nearly 4 fights at that point but it ended up being basically 2. All I kept thinking of was the end of Slapshot minus the Hansons. Of course the Hanson's are better fighters than that assclown Cote.

Avery ended up getting a 10 minute misconduct a few minutes later. This over the fact his goalie got a bit of ice sprayed his way.

I know he is an instigator but does he ever actually fight?

demondg1 said...

Only in Philly could 3 fights break out for no reason what so ever. Dicks.
Way to boot a ref in the face.

And yeah, gotta leave Petersen on Staal's wing. He's having a hell of a year. Career year in fact.

Wait...

Who the fuck is Petersen?

demondg1 said...

And regarding Coburn's busted ass, rumor has it a mysterious mustached man was seen leaving the scene. Not to point fingers or anything, but has anybody seen Pensblog Charlie?

whistler said...

Who HASN'T Downie try to hurt this year? OMG.. I think he'd hurt someone's puppy if he had the chance...

Nice announcing the scores of the games after our ECHL game tonight. Seeing the win and the loss made me such a happy boy...
