Haha, hockeyfights.com recently said that Cote took MMA lessons and watches videos of himself to improve. That sure paid off.

And...

I read where Cote said some pretty classy things about Laraque after BGL beat his ass.

that being said, those MMA classes look like money well spent!

Rod the Bod has never looked better. Can you imagine him in HD wearing that atrocious Flyers’ sweater?

Awful officiating last night. Apparently they weren’t motivated to review Malone’s GWG, and they dropped the Cole auto-game ejection as well.

Malone was Mr. Everything last night. A goal, a blocked shot, a +1, a face-off taken, 5 shots, and 4 hits.

Interesting fact: 3 of the top 5 teams with the most Wins are in the Atlantic Division.

How many Atlantic teams are going to make the playoffs? If things stay as they are, its going to be four. I don’t think the Rangers are going to qualify. In the end I think Buffalo leap-frogs them, as they have 5 points to make up and 3 games in hand. Unless something goes horribly awry in Boston, they make it, giving the NE 4 teams in the postseason. 10 points separate 1st from 8th, however, so the proverbial log jam at the bottom of the standings make it pretty impossible to predict.

This trade deadline should be very, very interesting. Why? Nearly every impact player is coming from Eastern teams. Generally, if you trade the caliber of player such as a Hossa or Sundin, it isn’t within your own conference. If you consider Forsberg an impact player, he’s the only one who’s heavily rumored to be coming East.

Finally, I wrote extensively about what to do about Bings’ wing situation. I plugged Army hard, and I’ll stick to that. Most successful lines are built around a pair of chemistry-heavy players, with the third guy who isn’t along for the ride (See: Robert Lang) few and far-between. I consider Pittsburgh very, very lucky to have a situation like that, potentially, with 2 scoring lines.

Anyway, I wanted an appraisal of a guy I watch a lot, and think the type of player he is will fit perfectly with Sid and Army: Marian Gaborik. He’ll be a UFA at the end of next season, and he’s basically said what Hossa has assumed everyone knows this season: He’s not going to re-sign in Minnesota.

I would put together a trade package in the off-season to try and pry Gabby away for the one year he’s got remaining. If there’s nothing going on between Sid and Gabby, the experiment is over. Maybe we loose Crusher, maybe we loose Espo or one of the great defensive prospects and a 1st round pick going into a 2009 draft that isn’t nearly as deep as the upcoming 2008 draft. Maybe Gabby scores 65 goals and decides a $5M/5year extension is worth it to appear in the Stanley Cup® Finals 4 or 5 times before his 30th birthday, where he can still more than cash in when the Rangers try, and once again partially succeed, in signing the core of Penguins whom have previously been winners.

mike georger - it's shaping up to be a nasty game, eh?

Hollweg's an asshole.

Hip said...

If it's your home town boy you're talking up, the last frame of your piece probably shouldn't be him being shoved around by BGL like a rag doll.

j wrath - I got to see Gabby in Minni this past Dec. Dude is unreal. What's up with the issues with coach though? Lemaire is a stand up guy.

flyer hater said...

"your fuckin team is nothing without crosby, whose leading the division douche bags"

Without proper punctuation, I'm assuming you meant to say "Whose leading the division: douche bags.", thus insinuating that douche bags are leading the division.

PS i guess they don't teach grammar in Philly, but I think you were looking for "who's". Who + is = who's. Fucking moron.

Ashley said...

Yeah, Philly's leading the division...one point more than Pittsburgh...and the Pens are missing some of the best players. That tells me that Pittsburgh is the better team because they're resilient.

But hey, that's just my opinion.

Ashley said...

lol @ flyer hater....douche bags are leading the division..haha

Flyer Hater said...

It looks like Chris Drury has finally come to play this season.

seeker said...

Just like a typical Flyer....

Cote and that whole team of talentless, league suspension leading goons merely talk the talk, but choke miserably when it comes to walking the walk.

Some "enforcer" they've got there...JOKE

wilsmith said...

whatd hollweg do? video?

DeathByEmu said...

Ha, it's like EVERY night is Cote Bobblehead night the way his melon wobbles around. That man's face sees more lefts than a NASCAR driver. MMA lessons? What, does he practice being the dummy?

Johnny Wrath said...

Lemaire called Gaborik out as an anti-team player when he has a contract dispute back in the day. I think they've had a rocky road ever since, and I believe is a big reason Gabby is constantly eluding to testing the UFA waters.

Minne is interesting. I like the concept of team play and really trusting each other. The rotating "C", the fact that until recently Lemaire never played with set lines so players were pretty much forced to play his system, etc.

They seem to have lost their identity in the last few seasons. I mean, the style that popped into your head until recently was "4 line trap". If you watch them now, a lot of the time they look like they've just iced five wild horses. Like LA, but with great 'tending.

If you're a Flyers fan reading this, I'm glad your team is doing well. Why is that? Because I hate NY and NJ more than you, and I don't want them to succeed. Hell, I hate Toronto more than you. So if you're going to get under my skin, at least use the spell check feature so I can try and figure out what you're eluding to.

-JW, EN, GoL.

Ashley said...

wilsmith - Hollweg took an elbow to the jaw from Kovalev, and when he returned to the ice several minutes later, he just ran Sergei Kostitsyn from behind and right into the boards.

Thankfully Kostitsyn looks to be okay, since he came back to the game a little later on.

Mike Georger said...

yeah the elbow by kovie was a bad no call, but i think hollweg will be getting suspended

Ashley said...

I think they'll both be suspended. Kovie for the elbow and Hollweg for the dumbass hit from behind.

Pittsburgh Girl Forever said...

Wow, is he an insult to MMA or what? And fighting is the way all Flyers manage to stay in the NHL because we know that they love to Downie-it to other players.

@ ashley

that's probably a GOOD thing...in the big scope of things...football is quite boring IMO...in between play stoppages, timeouts, play challenge reviews....it seems like there's about 4 minutes of 'action' for a whole game (& that # might be high)....heres hoping the 2nd half commercials are better than the 1st

Ashley said...

dr turkleton - yeah, this whole 'not playing but the clock's still tickin' thing is buggin me. A hockey game with the Devils is a million times more exciting than this (IMO).

At least you guys get the commercials. I'm watching the Fox feed on CTV, but we don't get the 'Super Bowl' commercials.

Maybe I should get back to homework crap...my lab partner will be pissed if I don't finish my part of the paper.

Flyer Hater said...

Dr. Turkleton, totally agree. Noone looking at this super bowl with an objective point of view can tell me it's been entertaining. I'd rather watch a Devils game from 1999 than this crap.

Lady Jaye said...

Wow... I didn't know you can challenge everything in football. Imagine if they had flags in hockey. It would take 10 hours to play one game.

Hip said...

That's such a bullshit penalty - dude was totally not involved in the play.

Football isn't exciting at all. It's like baseball - the whole thing is just an excuse to socialize. Hockey and soccer are the only sports where the actual action keeps me entertained.

Flyer Hater said...

A game like this shows that hockey is truly the greatest sport on Earth.

Ashley said...

I totally agree, flyer hater.

The only reason I'm watching is because I'm hoping that the Giants can win and pull off one of the biggest upsets in history. I may not know anything about the game, but I know how great that would be haha

Stanley Cup Finals >>>>>>>> Super Bowl

Oh you know it Ashley. The Super Bowl has become a sort of American holiday. Even if you don't know anything about or don't like football, you still watch it.

the nfl has gone downhill so much since the late nineties. over half the qb's are a joke and the advertising is absurd. the myth of them being the greatest athletes is bullshit too. ohhhh you move around for about ten minutes a game and play between 16 and 20 games a year? my GOD how do you do it????????

Unreal. Couldn't be happier right now. How long before Brady says the ankle was bothering him more than he let on?

What I really DO appreciate about football though is the reffing.

For the most part it is outstanding and totally unbiased.

There's no such thing as an "even-up" call in football.... and if you think about it, that in itself is an insult to hockey.

It also doesn't matter if the game is 37-0 with 40 seconds left, they'll still call the fouls as they did when it was 0-0 and beginning of the game.

brady, for the most part, looked like a zombie out there: from showing him sitting on the bench when the g-men held the ball for 1/2 of the 1st Q --to him walking in the tunnel in the locker room a split second after 0:00 appeared on the scoreboard -- I hope he got a nice bowl of soup with that haircut, too...

Oh well, worked out.

And all this humble pie crap about the Pats, enough. They are the cockiest bunch I've ever seen. Asante Samuel celebrates like he just won the SB every time he tackles someone. He gained 10 yards on a catch because you didn't cover him, but you still celebrate the tackle? C'mon.

Thats the best effort Cote can put up after taking MMA classes and studying fights of his opponents? He may want to start taking some different classes to broaden his horizons. Knitting, how to survive on a minor league hockey salary, or how to absorb punches would be my three suggestions. What a joke, that local news affiliate in Philly should do a follow up story on how he got his ass handed to him by a proffesional fighter/pornstar. That's the difference between the real enforcers and the rest of these jokes in the league, they don't need to talk about how they are going to kick people's asses they just do it. Jokes like Cote have their five minutes in the spotlight and then its back to the farm team.

JOHNNY WRATH - Marian Gaborik would indeed be about as superstar a winger that we could get for Crosby and I think your rationale is thought out well. If Minnesota absolutely thinks they can't resign him, it may be in their best interests to trade him before the start of next season.

Two things, though...

1. I'd still be leary of what it would take to get him. Shero can leverage Gaborik's status as a potential one-year rental against Minnestoa. The problem is, what if you still deal Espo and a first-round pick in '08 or '09 as part of that deal, and it doesn't work. If that happens, you're now out Gaborik, Espo AND a first-round pick. If I'm giving up that much, I'd want assurances that I'm getting him long-term. Which brings me to...

2. ...his attitude. I'm sorry, but if you're a hockey player and you have problems playing in Minnesota, I'm wondering how much you really prioritize playing hockey over the contract. Minnesota is about as devoted as it gets in terms of support. This would worry me a bit.

Alternative theory. I heard someone mention on Madden that the Ducks could be looking at potential cap hell this coming summer. They've got roughly $45 mil already tied up in 12 players and they still need to re-sign Corey Perry, who is a pending restricted free agent. Unless they move a big contract or two, that's going to be a problem. I'd be interested to see if Shero tries to either a) swing a deal for Perry, or b) tries to sign him for an offer sheet that he knows Anaheim can't meet.

MadMax said...

yeah but playing with sid is any wingers dream job... Havlat, Gaborik, or Perry would be amazing for the Pens. All three are young and will fit in with the team. Maybe Gaborik would pull a Randy Moss (sorry to pull the Pats reference but its best example i could think of) and clean up the ego for the sake of a cup.

Jonny V said...

Fleury's return to the roster. I'm sure there's gonna be a lot of details they have to hammer out formally before the strike officially ends.

There is something about Gaborik that i've always liked him. The great hockey state of Minnesota aside, if there are hard feelings between coach and player, it's most often the player who gets dealt. Look at Patrick Roy. An organization can't sell out a coach like that. And Lemaire is one of the better ones. I don't see us getting Hossa with the Red Wings and Rangers jockeying for his services, but Perry would be an interesting addition. Making the salary cap work for us would be nice to see after the relative lack of activity by the Pens this summer (Sykora was nice, but not the goal-scoring winger we needed).

That being said, I don't see us dealing such a big part of our future for what may become a rent-a-player.

Favorite shows are definitely subjective, but I have heard great things about The Wire and hope to one day order all of the seasons off of Netflix whenever I find the time. House is quality television. When the hell did Kumar join the cast?

MadMax said...

ha he will never be taken seriously as an actor after Harold and Kumar. He will always be Kumar

e.mirchich said...

i second everything canaan just said. i love heroes and dexter. house is up there as well. the wire is a good show, just overall not my type of show. although, making a dispute for a premium channel show being the best show on tv is kind of unfair. not everyone has them, so comparing not as widely known premium channel shows to basic package nbc/abc/cbs/fox shows is kind of apples and oranges. there is a reason they are called premium channels. some of the shows are better and have better more original ideas than cable shows.
