Groundhog Day = Hoax

Today is Groundhog Day.

Other than spawning a halfway-decent movie, it means nothing.

The [National Climatic Data Center] reportedly has stated that the overall predictions accuracy rate is around 39%

Can anyone imagine if this would happen now?

Spreading Rumors blog

Now that's it's February, it's time to start taking trade rumors a little more seriously.

[ TSN ] comes through with some stuff.

Imagine if the Pens could land Martin Havlat from Chicago.

Havlat is oft-injured, but he is nasty.
If you could pay him at the end of season according to that season's statistical output, he would be Sid's winger in a second.

The downside is it will turn to crack, and we will be in withdrawal when the preview ends.

Roberto Luongo's first visit to Florida since being traded lit a fire under the Panthers' asses.
They showed unparalleled heart with a come-from-behind shootout victory.

The shootout started early with Naslund getting a penalty shot in OT, but it was turned away by Vokoun.

The only reason this game was close, was the goaltending brilliance of Manny Legace.
Giguere wasn't too bad either.

The most entertaining 1-0 shootout game you'll ever see.

Jarkko Ruutu gets no love, but some commentors there speak up.

On the second page of that Jim Kelley article we posted yesterday, he had this to stay about Jarkko Ruutu:

On Wednesday, night Ilya Kovalchuk was taken out by what looked like an intentional knee-on-knee hit. Kovalchuk, who was suspended for one game last week for a similar hit, was felled by Jarkko Ruutu of the Penguins. Look for **Ruttu**, the player who was stomped by Islanders forward Chris Simon earlier this season, to get a supplemental discipline suspension Thursday or Friday.

Do people even know what they're looking at when they see the replay of that hit?

That video is a great find. Wow, that level of violence at the same time the league was at peak scoring. How is that possible? I thought the only way to increase scoring was to make sure no one was ever touched? Fucking instigator rule. Shows that when they're allowed, players will police themselves. Sometimes by trying to stab each other with their sticks. Who doesn't miss that?? (j/k)

ruutu should only get a 4 minute minor for drawing blood, but nothing more. nice vid.

Those fight videos were out of control. I could imagine that happening now if someone slashed Crosby like that. I think Gary Roberts would explode.

Pennsylvanians need to vote Ed Rendell the hell out of office. He's a god damn joke.

Bet with Acid Queen is a solid idea.

We all know Rendell shows bias to his hometown but this is friggin stipid. $45 million for a soccer stadium for team that does not exist yet? Getting an arena for the Pens was to save a team that had a huge fan base and would actually draw money in. Soccer is a terrible, boring, low scoring sport. Fun to play, aweful to watch. Many make noise at how hockey is less popular in the US than other sports but soccer is not one of them. Americans hate soccer. We used to have a MLS team where I live and they played in the football stadium which worked out fine. (Why can't this team play in Philly's football stadium?) They don't exist anymore because the league had to downsize and few people gave a crap. Talk about a waste of money.

I think the only problem with the Math Camp video was that Rendell wasn't it in getting his head chopped off.

No action on Ruutu by league. Nice. What a slew of sour pussed assholes.

Center Ice IS addicting...I'm on my 3rd full season of the package & am starting to get used to the few hours of sleep during the hockey year (damn left coast games!)...there are two things I can do in order to get my wifes attention when Center Ice is on:

1)put on a Capital game when the Craps announcers are spewing their garbage (the voice of the color guy, Laughlin is like fingernails down a chalkboard) & I see how long it takes her to scream "TURN THAT GAME OFF!!!" (the record is 6.5 seconds)
2)leaving the channel on after a game has ended and that B-minus porno music comes on....I've gotten blood-curdling screams from the bedroom to TURN THAT MUSIC OFF!!!! or FIND ANOTHER GAME!!!!....
don't get me wrong, my wife loves hockey almost as much as me....she just despises the Craps announcers & bad porn music

Go Pens!

Some thoughts...

1. Not all men who wear top hats deserve to be fought. Slash wears a top hat, but he does it while rocking his face off, not fondling a poor groundhog in the middle of winter. I'm just sayin'...

2. Last night, I watched the Pens-Flyers game from last year that came with the Pens 10 Greatest Games DVD set (Sid's 6-point night). I forgot what a bunch of douches the Flyers were last year...particularly Fedoruk. Fedoruk played the game wearing a cage because he'd just returned from surgery after having his face literally caved in during a fight with Boogaard, and he was still running around starting crap, along with perennial asshat Ben Eager. It was strange, too, to see this stuff going on and not see either Laraque or Roberts out there.

3. Speaking of Philly, does anyone know if One Hill has called a press conference yet to bitch about their position that they deserve a cut of the revenues from the new soccer stadium in Philly?

4. FLEURY29 - We'll get our chance on Rendell. There's a chance, though, that he might eventually be replaced with Danny Onorato.

5. Love to see Havlat here even though he's injury-prone and a bit expensive. We were at the Valentine's Day game last year against Chicago and he was an absolute beast in that game.

6. One reason I can't job the Canes - it's Pens Alumni Night when the Canes come to town. Barrasso's the goaltending coach so I'm sure it could be pointed out that Tom Fitzgerald works for the Pens. But Ronnie Francis is the assistant GM there as well, and Saint Ron is my favorite Pens player ever.

geezer, you put the word 'proliferatin' into your post. acid queen read it and it blew her stupid, red neck mind.

so i started watching the canadian lady, but i just couldn't do it. but the jarkko jibjab was awesome.

does anyone think that brooks orr-pik looks like b.j. novak from the office. i was watching an episode on thursday. novak had a beard and looked almost exactly like orr-pik.

leaving for the game in exactly 5 hours.

Good call on BJ Novak. And the Office is probably the best show sort of on tv right now. Damn strike.

I didnt get to watch much of the last two games because I had to go to some stupid conference things for work, so they better get down to business tonight. Put ya' business socks on.

Also, I'm a day late but sign me up for the RM game. I'm up for anything involving TPB members chillaxin. Someone organize something, I'm faaaar too incompetent.

and since I'm talkin about organizing, someone organize an nhl08 tournament. I'm probably the worst player ever and I have no friends to play against. =`(

Go Pens.

@ stoosh

I was at that 2/14/2007 too...I remember how bad it had snowed...
if in 'absolute beast' for havlat you mean -2 & 2 shots (both in OT) then, yes, he was...
Havlat would be a great addition as crosbys 'scoring winger' everyone covets, but who knows how many games he'd actually play (he's broken my heart too many times on my fantasy hockey team)

Havlat is one of my favorite players in the NHL. If we could land him next season look for the pens to run really deep into playoffs.

If we dont get him we should try for Vaclav Prospal. Much older but cheaper as well. Underrated player.

The most intriguing talking point if the Penguins seems to be what to do about Sid’s wing situation, and of course who exactly that may be.

Obviously it would be nice if there was another young maverick within a few years of Capn’ Siddey, but I can’t think of any we could get our hands on. The only one I could suggest is Nathan Horton. At 22, he is only on pace for 20 goals and 60 points. I have no idea if that’s because it’s Florida, or if he isn’t the goal scorer they drafted him to be. I’ve made the argument that the Southeast Division will continually be home to scoring champions. It has been said that it’s because they have the best players; however, they also happen to be on the worst teams. If my theory is true, Horton should be dominating divisional games, and he’s not.

Still, if Pittsburgh ever seriously entertains an offer for Jordan Staal or Ryan Whitney, as many Penguins fans have suggested they do, I would expect either an almost-can’t-miss right-handed scoring wing, or a 3rd to 5th overall draft pick, plus. The trade would absolutely need to facilitate the promise those two players have at their position, but in the form of said winger.

I also think Army needs to stay on Sid’s line. They have a great friendship, this is true, but they also have great chemistry. Army is not afraid to hold the puck that extra second and make a good play, and they have about 19 set plays where they gain the offensive zone and work a give-and-go. I don’t care if he doesn’t have top-six finishing, but you need that complimentary wing who is going to go in the corner, or who is going to be aggressive and fearless. Go Pens.

Case in point: Everyone has heard of the “Triple Crown” line. History remembers Marcel Dionne. He was the star, the one who sold the tickets. If you can name the other two guys who helped him get 731 goals, I’m very proud of you. The Gretzky/Hull superstar dream pairings don’t always work.

Aye, aye Steve Downie "needs an education".

stokes said...

@ johny wrath: I agree about Colby. Their off-ice friendship really helps their on-ice chemistry. Colby knows how to get open and where to be and also allows Sid to have some space. Colby just needs to finish because he usually can get open.

I'm leaving for the game soon and will miss the Game Day post so here goes:

well, nevermind. i was gonna make some sort of orpik/cole/broken neck joke, but then i got some sort of conscious.

peeps -
thanks for a great read over lunch while stuck at the hospital. mademydayblog.

if I was remotely close to yins I'd be in for the RM stuff, but put me down in advance for next year.

re: Army on Bing's line. Sid seems to want him there, so I am fine with that. I don't think you can trade Whit though. If you have to have a winger for the top line, the bait has to be JStaal.

Ovie does do the kiss, windmill pump for his older bro who was killed in a car accident. This is the brother who insisted their parents let him play and helped get him to practices as a kid. Beautiful tribute.

Bettman is tricky for Penguins’ fans. On one hand, we have a man who checked into the Westin William Penn for 2 weeks specifically to lobby the City, County, and State officials to proceed with the New Arena plans. He basically acted as the fulcrum between two sides that were a bit short of the necessary leverage. We’re not going to have to see what Quebec fans did, and for that reason I extend Gary a margin of error greater than most.

On the proverbial other hand, there is the Bettman who can’t seem to get out of his own way, which tends to marginalize the type of fan I am. I often have Doc Holiday moments where I’m not accustomed to looking for games on Versus. The last time Pittsburgh was covered there, I had completely forgotten it was there. I was about to lament the game not being on TV at all in my region, until 5 long minutes later I realized where I could see it.

You all know me. I’m a Hockey junkie, and I must have read that said game was on Versus 6 or 8 times that day, and I still forgot about it. What also tends to happen is that more mainstream sports media channels (I don’t know why I’m being vague about ESPN) have the freedom to diminish the significance of NHL Hockey. They broadcast poker, darts, and billiards and would love you to believe them when they tell you that’s a more pertinent game.

I wish Hockey could be promoted as Hockey. Yes, people may fight one another. It is one of the things that separates it from other sports; part of its heritage. Something that I find is overlooked is the team enforcer and the amount of real work they do for their communities. Every hospital visit, every charity signing, every event – there is Georges Laraque. There’s Donald Brashear, George Parros, and Scott Parker. Its almost as though Gary is trying to spell out the unwritten rules at this point.

Finally, put the combined athleticism and toughness of NHL players on equal terms with any other sport. I don’t think there’s a harder job in all of sports than a penalty-killing forward, and they don’t make any highlight reels. Include everyone on the team, North Americans and Europeans. Mainstream media would love for you to believe Russians aren’t tough. Tell Dmitri Yuskevich he isn’t tough after playing an Eastern Quarterfinal Series with nine broken toes.

I’m sorry for the long posts. That’ll be all. Do you enjoy reading as much as I enjoy writing?

The video of Lemieux, hell, I felt like beating the living daylights out of 'em too!! If that happened to Sid, Malone, BGL, and Roberts would single-handedly kill everyone in the stadium. Of course, they deserve only a 4 min. penalty for drawing blood, a misconduct at the most. Rules are rules, NHL!!

Great vid for Ruutu!! I'm still angry that people assume the worst with him!!

Lemieux for Governor sounds like the most awesome idea in the world! Let's put Francis or Coffey up for lieutenant governor.
