I bet the first thing Charlie does today is call to see which rooms Alfie and Spezza are staying in.

Man, Charlie gets Ottawa two Saturdays in a row. I bet he's stoked.

That Malkin picture of him on that baseball team is classic.

I have yet to introduce myself in Cblog. I've been reading since the start of this season when a group of friends introduced me to the blog. Long time Pens fan (I watched them winning the cup when I was 6-7 years old.) Took a break from hockey and decided to pick back up a little after the lockout. Went to my first games this year. I rushed for the Buffalo pre-season game and rushed the fan appreciation day for the Flyers game in November and got a nice Talbot-signed pizza box. Will be attending the Sharks game tomorrow luckily after a friend couldn't use his ticket. I forget where the seat is, though. It'll be nice to see Conk (I hope) and not Sabu for the third time. The name is Mike, or Shoey, or sh0ez. Whichever. Go to the wonderful CALU. I hope to be doing some more wonderful Photoshops for the blog (Flyers magazine issues every so often) and making myself at home. So hey to everyone and Let's Go Pens!

As a hockey fan, I really don't get the whole Lecavalier thing. Not just the Gretzky quote, but all the "insiders" saying the same thing over the past few seasons. I must be missing something. Iginla, too. I've had Center Ice since 2001 and I've never looked at the schedule and said "Oh great, Tampa's playing X tonight, I get to watch Lecavalier".

Gretzky hearts Charlie.

Jobber jersey in storeblog?

I think the sign says "Mario Lemieux's Protege"

Miracle on ice is defintately tearsblog. Every time.

I left a couple of Stoosh-like in length comments on yesterday's post for a few of you. Check 'em out because I don't have the energy to re-post.

Leaving for Pittsburgh in about an hour.

Today's game: E 28 Row G

Sunday: B21 Row B

Look for the yellow Pens hat and a cane. The name is "Matt." Don't be strangers now, ya here?

The Real Chris E - I'm leaving the next two games up to you on GameDayChat. Do it!

Once again, thanks everyone for all of the support with my health, directions, parking, etc. It's greatly appreciated. Honestly.

I will be at the game b-32. Look I think at row e. You will see an older guy with a beer in his hand screaming about something. My feeling is, if you want to sleep or stare at your seat, go home. Cheer this team and live life to the fullest. It's been my creedo all my life and it's served me well. Besides this team is so on the way up. If you can't get excited actually sitting there and seeing it then go buy a gravesite and dig a whole because your dead.

As far as the trade rumors who cares. If they traded Christensen it wouldn't surpise me but what do we really need? Personally I need to stomp and shout and scream LETS GO PENS but I gotta wait till the game.

It's a black guy holding a sign that says "Mario Lemieux's Brother"... get it? :)

I am so sick of the league shitting all over the younger and clearly superior players because they are young. Saying Zetterberg and Lecavalier are better because they are older is just fucking stupid. If Lecavalier had the Lightning in a playoff spot right now then I could give him that credit. He has played balls out this season but several younger players are still better than him and their teams are in better positions for a run at the cup. Besides, how long did it take him to get this good? Crosby and AO did it in their rookie seasons, it took Vinny about 8-9 seasons.

Sorry "Great One" but you are wrong. Crosby, Malkin and AO are all better than those 2 and they are all much younger.

This just a "in case you wanted to know" piece of information, but I did an internship with a corporate lawfirm a few years back and was working on a copyright violation case for the WWE. Anyhow, I learned that any time clothing or other merchandise is confiscated for violating a sports team or company's copyrights, instead of being destroyed, those clothes are shipped to third world countries. Which is my you'll see kids in Rwanda wearing Nike shirts and probably how those people got a hold of the Pats superbowl shirts.

Nate said...

Yeah, they do that with every super bowl or major game like that. They have all the stuff printed for both teams before the game (thats how you see everyone wearing the hats 3 seconds after the game is over) and the losers merchandise gets shipped, usually to Africa somewhere as charity. So they're probably really confused on their sports history.

I have a Super Bowl 30 Steelers Super Bowl Champions shirt. Pulled it off ebay for I think $10 a few yrs back. It runs a little small (I can typically wear a large with no probs, and this is tagged a L but it's tight in the shoulders).

If needed, I can get a pic of it once I get home.

don't get your hopes up, you'll probably be watching sabu in net on SUN. Conk plays today and If I am remembering correctly I think MAF is playing his final conditioning game with WBS today. So Im pretty sure Sabu is in net tomorrow.

-So I have finally moved into my apartment here in Denton, TX. Had my cable hooked up and everything, and get this... my cable provider doesn't have center ice! What a joke. Anyway I'll be listening to Lange via internet today. Then Im on a mission to find the new Penguins bar in Denton. Anyone in the area? didn't think so. But on the wild chance there is... were meeting tomorrow at a bar. hit me up.

Malkin 3A today
goals by - malone (duh), Sykora (2), and armstrong... I think laraque will do something today that fires the team up early. Pens win 4-2
what do you think?

Either way, I don't remember what seat my friend had. I know it's in the B-section, but that could be anywhere. I'll update that sometime today. I'll be the bearded kid in the new practice jersey with a Titans visor with Pac-man embroidered on it. You can say hi, even though I know no one yet.

Stoosh said...

DR. TURKLETON - Madden is a joke. He's been yammering on all year about Therrien going way out of his way to make Sabourin the #1 goalie this year. He read an email I sent him on the air yesterday, basically a four-point argument that disagreed with him about Therrien trying to force Sabu as the #1. It said:

1. Sabu made only 11 of 28 possible appearances prior to Fleury getting hurt.

2. While Fleury was healthy, Sabu only made consecutive starts twice (once was a three-game span, once a two-game span). There were also two instances where Sabu won and MT went back to Fleury the next game.

3. Sabu only made three starts in the last twelve games before Fleury got hurt, and two of those were the back ends of back-to-back games.

4. Sabu has made only FIVE starts in the last 28 games.

He only read points #1 and #2 on the air, said my argument did nothing but help prove his because no backup should play that much (which is true). But he never read points #3 and #4. Why? Because they disprove his argument and Lord knows Mark doesn't like to be proven incorrect.

I'm no fan of Sabourin at all. But to claim Therrien is going out of his way to make Sabu the #1 is crazy. I like Madden's show a lot because he talks hockey, but it's clear he's got some sort of an axe to grind with Therrien over this goaltending thing. This is one thing I hate about his show when the Pens are doing well - there's nothing to bitch about, so his show dissolves into nothing but berating callers who argue strategy and philosophy with him, and taking things grossly out of context.

I just watched another one of the Miracle videos that popped up on the menu when the first one finished, it was another guy doing it the call and it had all the goals, I can't believe the whole team came off the bench to celebrate the goals. That'd start a brawl if a team did that now.

And they just interviewed Nick Kypreos on FSN, did a great job, didn't know he was in the media now, first time I've seen him since '97.

Johnny Wrath said...

Stoosh, I knew that was your email 4 words in. Signature styles are associated exclusively with class.

I do, however, subscribe to the points MM makes regarding Therrien's ambiguous regard for certain players.

Here's what my expectations would be;

Therrien plays MAF 2 of 3 times, Sabu pulling up the slack. Therrien, as he displayed in WB/S when they were the tandem, and earlier this season, is very anxious to pull Fleury, casting subtle doubt over the young netminders' standing. Had Conklin not suddenly taken over the world, I believe this would be the methodology. I realize MAF was playing much more consistently before his injury; however, I believe Therrien would relish the opportunity to carry on with his split.

I believe Therrien, had Geno not produced 2 PPG average as a Centre, would play him at wing on line 1 with Sid when he returns. I believe he would do this to free more time for players like Taffe and Smith. Its the same thing he does that inexplicably allows for said players to have roughly :55 during each power play.

If there weren't favoritism, I just can't explain how Sabu is still in the mix. I just can't figure out why the PP time is split, or for that matter, why time is split between players who need nothing but experience to become top-three at their position, and those who possess virtually no upside.

LOL, Galley (I think that's former NHLer Gary Galley) just said in an interview with the ol' 29er that the Sens "were having problems in their own back end."

Charlie strikes again?

wilsmith said...

I agree with both stoosh and johnny. I do think Therrien shows favoritism to a lot of guys, but I don't think Sabu is one of them. I just think that if the goalie has an off net you have to be quicker to get the other one in because that's a position you can't have falter and still expect to be successful. That's how I explain any favoritism theories regarding Sabu, it's just more noticeable with a goalie, but as Stoosh showed with the numbers, it's hardly even true, because the numbers of games the guys split seems pretty reasonable. We also have to agree that Fleury wasn't exactly setting the world on fire at the beginning of the season, giving Therrien a reason to play him.

As for all those guys on the PP sucking up the time, I don't know. I guess I can understand with all the injuries and everything, but if guys like Smith (I think Taffe deserves SOME time) are getting that much powerplay time, something is wrong. He's the definition of a plugger, keep him away from that power play time.

wilsmith said...

Not only did Conklin suck out loud today, we're going to have to see Dany Crapourin tomorrow against San Jose. Just a terrible game from him.

I want everyone to crucify Conklin for this loss just like they would do if Fleury was in net. That's what's comical. If Fleury's in there, "HE FUCKING SUCKED, BUST!!!!" but the reaction will be now, "Well we had our chances" Disgraceful

Anonymous said...

the only good thing about that game for me was that I didn't have to put up with Steigy, CBC announcers were 1000x better than Steigy, they don't say stupid shit the whole game and they don't whine about penalties and say "(so and so) winds it around the net" 30 times a game

conklin did not play well but any defense that leaves heatley completely wide open is shit. i mean maybe they just hadnt heard of him before tonight but i doubt it

Anonymous said...

Every goal was scored down low. We need a guy to knock the shit out of someone in front. Terrible loss, I'll take the point, but.....

seeker said...

I can't see how you can blame Conklin at all????

Sheesh...we had a million Power Plays and only scored on one....and even on it it was more on the rush than when they were set-up. Only one more goal out of all those PPs would have iced this game for us.

stokes said...

Lange used 'Heatley' and 'dies' in the same sentence on the radio side.

Didn't see a minute of the game, so i cannot judge. But, you really shouldn't blow a three goal lead. At home. To anyone.

Anonymous said...

oh you can definitely blame Conklin, he handed Ottawa their first goal which woke them up from hibernation! He effed that play up behind the net, and then in overtime where was his positioning on Alfredsson, he wasn't squared to the shooter and it looked like he had time to get over, it was like he was waiting for the clock to run out or for someone to knock the puck off of Alf... defense sucked- nobody's physical, pp didn't get anything going after the first one, but if Conklin would've played a typical Conklin game, Pens would be a point up on the Sens right now

canaanregulatesblog said...

stokes, lange called heatley "deadly" as well.

what an announcer.

Anonymous said...

the game was not Conklin's fault at all. so if you're gonna blame him, yeah, i will call you dumb. it was 3-0 before i got to watch the game so when i did i had to watch a period and a half of ottawa beating our defense in our zone and getting scoring chances. and therefore 3 goals from ottawa. we still managed to play well somehow though those power play chances that we had really came back to bite us.

Nick said...

Yeah, let's blame Steigerwald for the loss. Because what he says in the press box has so much to do with what's happening on the rink. I understand that he says things at bad times, but come on, really??

@ Flyer hater...I completely agree. Conk's gaffe on the Stillman goal gave Ottawa the opening they needed to get right back in the game.

Rob Scuderi has got to go. He stands in our crease all game and frequently misses chances to play the puck around the boards when behind our own net. We need any kind of D to replace him before the playoffs start.

San Jose only has 10 GF in their last 5 games...Let's hope we can jump on them early because their offense hasn't been getting it done lately.

Conk tomorrow, Fleury Tuesday, Crosby Tuesday or next Sunday.

Let's Go Pens.

sh0ez said...

Of course you can blame Conklin for some of it. There were a few times where he made me uneasy. Unfortunately that gives Sabu the start for tomorrow, I'm sure. And of course he is starting since I'm going to the game.

The four PP's (I think 4?) at the start should have given them at least one more goal. Although, Ottawa still would have worked just as hard and possibly still tied it up. Just a meltdown by the Penguins at the end. At least we got a point. A point is better than nothing in this tight race. Hopefully tomorrow we can handle the Sharks. I hope I'm not a curse.

Let's Go Pens.

seeker said...

You blame Conklin for the first goal?

OK...then blame ANY Penguin that came close to the net because if EVERY Penguin stayed back away from the net, and ANY Senator touched the puck (even into the net) it would have been a hand-pass....no goal and a whistle.

We had 30+ quality scoring chances (a team high), but only put the puck in the net 3 times.

You're playing a team that was in 1st place all season because they are good. You need to score more goals against them and not think that anything less than a shut-out is a bad game by the goalie.

Anonymous said...

We're number one! We're number one! No, seriously, we are. Mirtle said so.

As stupid as this sounds, we actually need to lose a few more games in OT/SO. We lost 11 last year. Right now, we only have 6. It would be nice to win all the time, but it's just not going to happen - and, as you see, we've been doing pretty well up to now.

Yeah, blowing a 3-0 lead sucks. And you have to really wonder why it's more worrisome when the team gets a lead than when they fall behind.

But most painful loss of the season? Not even close. Is that meeting on the Smithfield Street Bridge gonna take place like it would've if we'd lost to Boston after blowing the 4-0 lead? No. Anyone remember how much fun it was sitting through that 60 minutes of the 4-0 Ranger game? Or wanting to throw up when Sid got hurt? Or that loss to New Jersey right before the first Ottawa game?

We got the point - we just have to take it and move on. (And PS, the NHL owes us for not letting New Jersey take the conference lead. *shudder*)

Nick said...

How can you not blame Conklin for the first goal. He had a player with no stick skating at him and he let him come right up on him like he thought he was Sid on the powerplay. Get rid of the damn puck and it never becomes an issue about the hand pass.

Your logic about coming back to the net makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Players were already standing in front of the net for one, and two if we let the Sens touch it, they get a face-off. Conk isn't god, it's okay to call him out when he makes mistakes. Today, he made a mistake and the Pens ultimately paid for it.

Anonymous said...

Conklin deserves some blame for the beautiful chances he gift wrapped for the Sens, but the Pens should have had at least one more goal with all of the empty net chances that went wide or hit the posts.

Just an ugly ending in all...

seeker said...

"Your logic about coming back to the net makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Players were already standing in front of the net for one"

Ummmm....it makes AS much sense as blaming Conklin does!

There were no Pens near the net until the puck got there (watch the replay). The Pens that did come in then created a situation where it pin-balled around, not allowing Conk to freeze it.

You'd worry about a face-off more than allowing a goal?

Talk about making sense???

seeker,

I guess you're right. leaving a puck lying around the front of your net is always a good idea. The puck hit Conk on the way back towards the front of the net, but I'm guessing you wanted all 5 Penguins on the rink to immediately realize that it was a hand pass, that it didn't matter that it hit Conk and that we should just let a Senator touch it so the whistle blows. Did you ever play hockey? Because if so, you would know that everything I just mentioned never goes through a player's head when the puck is going towards the front of the net.

Maybe Conk should have just let the puck slide into the net based off of your logic. I guess that would make him at fault on two separate parts of that play. So in turn, Conk messed up again. Wow. Talk about making sense.

Please learn.

guys settle down.... OT loss to a great team... hopefully it teaches our boys something about playing with a lead against a powerful team. Maybe that lesson goes in the vault come playoffs.

we got a point against ottawa without sid....

Just watched the Stillman goal again. Letang was standing right in front of the net when the puck was knocked down by the glove.

That doesn't even make sense.

If you've ever played hockey, you know every instinct in your body makes you go to the net when thats where the puck is.

Suggesting they should have backed off in the hopes that the Sens got called for a hand pass is just moronic.

It against everything a hockey player is taught to stand back and not go to the play, they're not going to back off that close to the net in hopes of getting a possible hand-pass call.

The first goal is on Conks, indecision/poor handling. It's already been said, you live by the Conk, you die by the Conk.

Hopefully the fact that we dominated one of the top teams in the league for 58 1/2 minutes will bring even more confidence to the machine that the Pens are right now.

Emery and his fucking posts stole that game. It could have been 6-0 before they even got a sniff at a goal.

The Pens kept the puck away from Ottawa's big line most of the night, and cycled like freaks. That is the key to beating them.

Ottawa is in trouble in my opinion...Redden sucks, and the forwards other than the top 3 were totally coughing up the puck at the blue line and in the neutral zone, giving us great chances.

I do want to know what the story is with the WBS guys logging pp minutes...they keep throwing bank passes blindly back towards the point with no regard to the coverage or whether or not a D is even there. Whatever.

And why someone is not draped over Heatley every time he's out there is beyond me. He didn't even have to move on his goal...he was in one spot for like 30 seconds. We need a badass to bury him when he's camped out like that.

Last, they should totally play ACDC's Have a Drink on Me every time there's a faceoff/commercial break and Heatley's on the ice.

There's no need to argue.

The formula is simple.

When a player performs a chili rainbow with his AHL teammates and the head coach, there is an increase in ice time.

When one places AHL players in important situations, goals against goes up.

Hence, I'm not surprised we relinquished a three-goal lead.

And now for your enjoyment, an original and sensationally drunk composition...

"From the ashes of the phoenix that is the chili rainbow

Arise will a goaltender tall and with neck so sore

For his face impressed upon the glass

Leering at the Senators big line was he, amazed with curiosity

Looking forward to the dreams that were sure to come this very eve

And the blue paint that would soon glow with light so red

As the coach prepares to refill his Valtrex™ prescription

Excited by another opportunity to perform Fleury's Crucifixion."

Cheers

I'm not sure what that poem means, Johnny Wrath, but i definitely want to know what a "chili rainbow" is. It is along the lines of a Dirty Sanchez?

P.S. I will be in section B27 tomorrow. Not sure of the row, though.

I've played and coached hockey all my life and I'm quite sure I'm much older than you.

Someone said Conk's not a God......directed at me. But I'm not the one who seems to think he should be a God.

What I SAID was it makes AS much sense to blame Conklin for that goal as it does to blame the Pens that rushed towards the net.

I've watched the replay in slo-mo and LeTang wasn't in front of the net when the puck was batted towards it. In fact, after Conklin played the puck he was interfered with getting back in front by another Sen skating behind the net. The puck couldn't possibly touch him first since he was still trying to get back in front. The same guy that swatted the puck skated towards the crease and tackled a Pen (LeTang?) and held him down. The puck touched whomever that was that got tackled.

Therrien even said the Sen's first goal was just luck. I tend to agree with a guy that coaches an NHL team.
