GameDay (59) -- Pens @ Sabres

6:00pm

[FSN Pittsburgh]

What a dumb time to start a game.
But that is Buffalo for you.

Last time these two teams played, the game was huge, and it meant a lot.
Strangely enough.
So is does this game.

Buffalo was left for dead a month ago.
Now they are knocking on the door.

The Pens have lost two straight.

Bing is skating in full contact drills at practice. [PG]

Some internet rumors are swirling that he is closer to returning than thought.
By closer, they mean tonight.

Which is highly unlikely and made up.

EC is out today.
Taffe is playing.

Conkblock we assume will be in net.

.................................
Eastern Conferenceblog

Overall, the Eastern Conference playoff race is insane.

At this point, starting today.
You have to prepare yourself for a wild next two months.

The Penguins have four games this week.

Could you imagine if they lose all four?
You'd have to think the plan is to at least try and go 2-2.

Whatever the case. This is a really important week in the grand scheme of things.
Especially with the trade deadline looming next week.

.....................
Western Conferenceblog

If the East race is wide open.
The West race is Mariah Carey's cooch.

Everyone but the Kings still has a legit chance.

And things are starting to get ugly.

Oilers/Canucks last night.

Go Pens

You'd have to think that, really, the playoffs start now, and the Pens will be better off if they start playing with that mentality. Playing sound playoff type hockey will lead to them being FIRST in the conference.

"Mariah Carey's cooch"
Just the fact that the word "cooch" was used in a post is total awesomeness.

LET'S GO PENS!!!!!

My digital guide says the games on FSN

Anonymous said...

The trib claims the game is on FSN; I think there was a glitch on NHL.com that's making the pens site not show it.

Erica said...

The pens website now says that is on FSN Pittsburgh at 6

The Emo Cow said...

it's so crazy that we're 2 wins from first place in the conference, but only 3 losses from not even being in the playoffs.

it's tighter than mariah carey's cooch. waaaaaaaaaaaaay tighter.

JORDAN STAAL

bbbbrian said...

Yeah losing all four games this week would be horrendous. Such a good race makes watching those Tuesday games on versus worthwhile. I can't believe they didn't just run the clock in that game with only 6 seconds left. Goes to show old style NHL blending nicely back in with the new NHL.

Let's do this shit!

Does anyone else think that Gary Roberts's team picture resembles Ivan Drago from Rocky IV...this surely can't be a coincidence could it?

I'll bet NBC is glad that they bumped the Pens/Sabres game for heart pounding action of this Wings/Stars game. I've dozed off twice since the middle of the first.

chris e said...

HAHA. I wasn't sure anyone ever noticed that.

I'm superstitious.

Flyer Hater said...

Dying Alive, because it's so obvious that we have nothing offensively other than Crosby and have just fallen apart since his injury. I mean we play such a boring brand of hockey, oh wait.

Dane Cook said...

Cooch > Twat

Cooch.

I forgot about that.

Andrew said...

Let's fuckin rageeee!!

Also, never google image search Gary Roberts. You get some scary shit, man.

Johnny Wrath said...

I watched the Canucks v Oil game, complete with 10 fighting majors in the dying moments and Luongo trying to stiff-arm some forechecker. Vancouver would be a really scary team if they added one of the dominant centers available w/o breaking up their D core. Not signing Mike Weaver was a big mistake.

We should be able to push Buffalo around and stun their city again. As far as I know, Lindy employs a defensive system similar to stranding Ryan Miller on an uncharted island.

I'm debating which of the following I have the hardest time believing: New Jersey not curling up and dying, or Therrien not beating Boston's obvious box+1 trap.

Anyone else watch that WC of Hockey bout on NHL Network US vs Canada in '96? If only hockey was played like that on a regular basis...

I'm watching the Pens/Sabres game on MSG network. The commentators mentioned they spoke to Crosby during the second intermission. Sid said he could be back as early as Tuesday.

That is an amazing recovery if he does.

GO PENS!!

Hip said...

Thanks for the apt help guys - I'll be beginning residency at UPMC and not making much, especially considering my enormous debt. I could probably do anything under $1500 total/month. As for living next to sketchy places, I currently am in Baltimore so I'm pretty sure anything anywhere in Pittsburgh will be an upgrade.

And, I'll never have to miss a Pens game again.

chris e said...

Yea baby!

Miller is so overrated. Crosby comes back on Tuesday, mark it down!

pops said...

CASTAWAY ON TBS RIGHT NOW!

Is this a sign from God?

wilsmith said...

Did someone say upgrade?

Doc Steel said...

My prediction:

On Saturday, Crosby surprises everyone and plays against Ottawa and leads the Pens to first place in the East.

On Sunday, Gary comes back to play against the Sharks.

On Monday, we trade for Brian Campbell.

On Tuesday, Georges Laraque murders Bill Guerin with his bare hands and is rewarded with a ticker tape parade the next day.

CHAMPIONSHIP!

wilsmith said...

Did anyone see Sykora talking about Potash's suit?

"Unreal man, unreal". So serious.

Mike Georger said...

yeah it took me a second to realize what the hell he had said, i love how much shit they give dan.

upgrade indeed

seeker said...

I believe that Malkin is now just 1 point behind Overatedchkin in the points race.

It also looks like the Cryers are going to be 6 behind us...which means more to me than being in 1st.

I'd LOVE to see them knocked out of the playoffs completely.

Flyer Hater said...

How great would it be if the Flyers totally collapsed and missed the playoffs. Filthy Flyer fans are now openly booing the little elf, Danielle Briere at home. Only 7 more years!! MAHAHAHAHAHA

pops said...

seeker, wiht those two games against the flyers at the end of the season, how FUCKING AWESOME would it to be eliminate them with those games. that is what i live for.

BobFarls said...

Anybody seen what John Fedko has been up to lately?

Last week he said Crosby is not the best player in the NHL.

Then on Friday he was on 'the sports reporters' on ESPN 1250 AM and he said that the penguins 'would lose to Buffalo for sure and go on a long losing streak forcing Crosby to come back early and ruin the Pens season."

What a jackass this guy is! Please tell me no one out here in c-blog cares what John Fedko says.

It's like a hee-haw factory with the jackass media members in this city making comments like this from time to time.

seeker said...

I'm listening online to the Cryers game....only a couple minutes left and they need two goals to tie.

I'M LOVIN' IT!!!

Flyer Hater said...

Can you imagine what this lineup will look like when everyone is healthy? Assuming we trade for some kind of scoring winger to play with Sid.

Scoring Winger-Crosby-Armstrong
Malone-Malkin-Sykora
Roberts-Talbot-Christensen
Laraque-Hall-Ruutu

Eastern Conferene=stunned

seeker said...

You can't possibly job Fedko any more than his Parents did by just having that asshole.

Empty Netter by the Habs....5-2 Montreal wins!

seeker said...

Shit...Cote scores first ever NHL goal with less than 1 minute to make it 5-3.

Flyer Hater said...

Can we just sign Max Talbot to a lifetime contact? I never want to see him in another uniform.

stokes said...

I would say that its time to get out the Jobber Tour Bus and call Fedko's Joke-of-a-Call-In-Show like before. Fedko=asswipe.

Good win, against a team that's playing pretty well right now. Good to see the Pens bounce back, albeit a game late. Whatev.

I said it on Sat, and i'll say it againt: Cros and The Flower back on sat Vs. Charlie's Boyfriends.

I'm totally watching Knight Rider before. I owned like seriously no less than 3 Knight Rider Big Wheels back in the day.

Flyer Hater: dig the new photo. EFF the collapsing Flyers!

GO PENS!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Watched the broadcast on Center Ice Online tonight, it was the Buffalo broadcast and it was actually pretty good, they interviewed Brooks Orpik in the 1st intermission and Errey in the 2nd! Might as well have been the Pens broadcast! But one of the Sabres announcers said that he was talking to Sid during the 2nd intermission and he may be looking at coming back as soon as Tuesday. so take that with a grain of salt but that's what he said. Also, Flyer Hater I would definitely pencil in Jeff Taffe in your 4 lines ahead of Hall, Taffe may not be putting the puck in the net but he's been creating a lot of chances, I would even try him with Sid for a game or two to see if he can start putting them home

Anonymous said...

Oh Flyer Hater I also just noticed you left Staal out of your 4 lines completely. Miiiiight want to throw him in there.

seeker said...

Fleury should take all the time he wants to get "into condition"....Conklin showed tonight why he should be our #1 goalie.

Fleury29 said...

John Fedko + Tom Barrasso x Cage = Sold Gold. PCNC needs to get to work on this now.

It's too bad the hotel I stayed in didn't have PCNC otherwise I would have jobbed him in the finest Pensblog tradition.

wilsmith said...

Staal was the bait for the scoring winger, apparently.

Ashley said...

How nice is it that the Pens win and the Flyers lose their 7th straight game?

Pretty damn nice, if you ask me

Fleury29 said...

I posted this in the comments of an earlier PB post... don't know why. I meant to post it here.

Did anyone watch Knight Rider tonight? Not getting William Daniels to do the voice of K.I.T.T. was a huge mistake.

That show won't last two seasons.

Ford Mustang? Pleeeeeeeeeeease.

Lance said...

deadline aquisition-Crosby-Kennedy
Sykora-Malkin-Malone
Talbot-Staal-Christensen
Ruutu-Roberts-Laraque
ex. Armstrong, Taffe

I know there is no center on that 4th line but who cares. The opposing teams would all curl up in the fetal position as soon as the puck was dropped anyway!

Mike Georger said...

how the HELL would you put adam hall on the team over tyler kennedy?

Flyer Hater said...

Guys, I'm a complete joke. Forgetting Staal and Kennedy, just disgraceful. I guess the joy of beating Buffalo and watching the Flyers lose their 7 game in a row just got to my head.

pp.com board user said...

flyerhater, we already know you are a joke. no need for it to be re-told.

suck it, kenny

Dr. Turkleton said...

Appears that Knight Rider is one giant Ford commercial....watched 1st hour (30 minutes being commercials)...no hasselhoff, no watchie
got the wifes O.K. to order NHL-Network today to go with the CI pkg (musta softened her up enough with the V-Day's gifts!)...all of that talk about ESPN & NHL2Night yesterday got me thinking that the little spare time I had remaining in the day should be spent with NHL related activity on the t.v.....can't wait for trade deadline coverage, which should be a National Holiday....speaking of Holidays, for those lucky enough to be off tomorrow (Love working for a bank!!!) Early games at 1 & 2pm....

Johnny Wrath said...

I forgot we had Adam Hall...

I think green energy is an outstanding cause to associate with, but if the knock on your revamped logo is that it looks like a slug, do not rock a green version.

Isn't Jason Smith a UFA? That would be a solid signing. Philly is too busy chasing shadows to remember to negotiate an extension.

DeathByEmu said...

Stuck in Philthy..listened to Pens game on XM radio..watched Flyers get beat on Comcast. It was Bizarro Flyers...Cote scored, and Lil' Danny B. got his nose broke. LOL they are now officially inside out and bass ackwards.

johnny wrath...

i've watched a bunch of flyers games this season (at least 20) and for being a captain, jason smith provides little-to-no leadership. he is mediocre in grit and disappears when he is needed most. i would pass, pass, pass on Jason Smith no matter what.

sorta off-topic:

that being said, this should make you smirk... flyer injuries, as of the end of tonight's game:

downie: concussion, day to day
tolpeko: concussion, 7-10 days
hatcher: knee, 3 weeks
lupul: high ankle, 2-3 weeks
gagne: concussion, done for season, probably.

wilsmith said...

Hatcher being out is bad news for the Pens

stokes said...

Since we beat the Swords again, i want to post this and use my new skill, thanks to Canaan...

CLICK ME AND TURN THE VOLUME DOWN JUST A LITTLE

Its good to see the Flyers getting beat up just in time for the home stretch. Losers.

Anonymous said...

Maybe the biggest win of the season? Lose and we omly have a 3 pont lead on 9th. 7 sounds much better. Lets Go Pens

canaanregulatesblog said...

you'd be surprised how much the people in philly like hatcher (and think he's a solid d-man).

stokes, i highlighted your link, but i didn't click it because i don't want that tune stuck in my head. =)

stokes said...

I now what you mean, but sometimes i like that song stuck in my head, Canaan. Weird....

I don't live in Philly, but it seems to me that Philly's relationship with Hatcher is love him or hate him. But, I've been wrong before. Is this an accurate assessment?

I didnt see a lot of the game, so i am looking forward to a solid recap, Staff.

Mike Georger said...

anyone else in the league would take a week to recover from the knee injury hatcher has, he is just that slow

Mike Georger said...

how do i get my photo to show up here

Mike Georger said...

BAM!

BlacknGold66 said...

Hell of a game today!!

Who knew LeBron could stick handle like that.

Wow.

Wait, what?!?!?!?!

Pensblog Staff said...

Along with those dream lines when everyone's healthy...

if the Pens acquire a scoring winger, expect at least someone on those lines to be traded to acquire said winger

Anonymous said...

what does it say about Hatcher when last year he was most effective for the Flyers standing in front of the net on the power play causing screens/deflecting shots/knocking home rebounds, as a defenseman. The funny thing is that he did the exact same thing on the PK for them last year too, just with more spinning in circles.

Cdubbs said...

how bout some new fedko pranks lol

If Ruutu would have scored another goal near the end of the 2nd period, I might have had to touch myself....just kidding :-D

Good win tonight, Geno within one point of Ovenchicken....

Happy to hear the Flyers lost again!!

Go Pens!!

canaanregulatesblog said...

Stokes, that is a pretty solid assessment re: hatcher and love/hate.

im watching the cbs3 news and they are interviewing IRS aka Flyers' coach Stevens. He compared the Flyers to the Penguins.

paraphrased: The penguins lost their best player and they keep winning. The Flyers have to find that heart and resiliency. Right now, it isn't there.

huzzah!

spidermonkey44102 said...

conk block city! let the flower take his time.

wilsmith said...

Okay, I know there's a lot of talk about getting a winger for Sid, but honestly, how important is that?

I saw This Guy play Saturday night in the ECHL. BEAST. Shero, do it.

/joke

but no seriously, do it.

DeathByEmu said...

One month ago...if you told anyone that two Russians would be leading the scoring race now, no one, outside of western PA, would have guessed one's name would be Evgeni. GEEEEEEENNNOOOOO!!
Awesome. Just friggin awesome.

stokes said...

i said something about about Fedko in a comment that didnt get posted, but its definitely time to get on the Jobber Tour Bus and start calling Fedko's Joke-of-A-Call-In-Show. He's a moron. Stick to high school football, ass hat.

Whoa! John Stevens, douchebag, finally figures out who's the better team. If only the rest of that dump could figure it out....

canaanregulatesblog said...

hey wil, the best part of that video is bas rutten being the absolute man.

wilsmith said...

Agreed.

stokes said...

Wilsmith: you passed up a great opportunity to job Riley "The Enforcer" Cote, which was a related video of the first one you linked.

Cote Sucks at Fighting Part 3894

Mike Georger said...

there isnt going to be a scoring winger coming in imo. i dont think its a coincidence that in the article of the 25 best available players on espn (i know i know) the penguins arent mentioned once, shero isnt going to make a big deal.

get rid of sabourin and christensen for something. bag of pucks or maybe a nice chair for the backup goalie to sit in

canaanregulatesblog said...

wil, i though you were gonna post this gem.

canaanregulatesblog said...

stokes, cote handled himself pretty okay in that fight i thought.

stokes said...

Mike Georger: I agree with you on Sabourin. He's done nothing but play his way out of a job since MAF went down.

About Christensen, that guy is so hot and cold that it drives me nuts, so i can only imagine what the Pens staff has to go through. Regardless, you can only put up with that kind of consistent inconsistency for so long.

stokes said...

Canaan: No doubt. i definitely meant to mention something about him actually doing well in that fight, but still, we all know what kind of fighter he is in the big leagues, right?

Mike Georger said...

christensen has gone from last years version of being the softest dude on the team but with a killer accurate wrister, to this years version of taking stupid penalties trying to rough people up and being too afraid to shoot. i like the kid but as you said, theres no place for that inconsistency.
i dont think this 'injury' is the real reason he is sitting out either

canaanregulatesblog said...

haha. no noubt, stokesy. cote's 'fighting' in the NHL is lolz.

wilsmith said...

wow, dude, you rutten video was way better than mine.

he was probably original inspiration for the "POW!" and "BANG!" or "BIFF!" from the original Batman series.

canaanregulatesblog said...

lol. bas is hilarious...and im not even a fight fan. "dangada dangada dangada"

stokes said...

There's no way that a guy as soff as Crusher could stand up to a hit by Chara, so i do believe he's actually injured. At the same time, i think that is pretty convenient, or lucky, that he got hurt when he did, so they wouldn't have to give him the dreaded "healthy scratch" tag.

I really thought for about a month there, and especially the week or so that the Staalbotsen line played together, that Crusher and Staal looked the best they looked all season. I thought that Crusher was coming out of his shell, but i guess not...

Canaan, indeed, Riley Cote's fighting is like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Hilarious!

Mike Georger said...

i wouldnt think it was fishy if he didnt come back to play the rest of the game

cragger said...

downie: concussion, possible vaginitis, day to day
tolpeko: concussion, 7-10 days
hatcher: knee (BUT WE WISH IT WAS AIDS), 3 weeks
lupul: high ankle, vaginitis, 2-3 weeks
gagne: concussion, vaginitis, done for season, probably

WOOT!

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO PENS!

stokes said...

So i finally watched the Rutten's videos, because law and order: SVU is over, and i was laughing after only the first minute. plus his accent makes it that much better. on top of it, i think i learned a little bit for the next time i get in a bar brawl.

Quality stuff.

(seriously, ive never been in a bar brawl, nor do i expect to be anytime soon.)

MG: Good point. Very true.

Cragger: nice. although if vaginitis put you out of the line-up for that long, how does Briere even have a job?

Mike Georger said...

i mean i dont doubt he did have some injury, but even if he didnt i think turtle wouldve sat him after that performance

stokes said...

Well MG, all i know is this: with this busy week and the trade deadline about a week away, it should make for an interesting week no doubt.

I'm out.
