The 11th Hour

One hour to go.

Pens have been quiet as expected.

But Shero is still shopping.

Some pretty good deals thus far. [TSN]

TSN's trade center might be the best show on earth.

NHL.com is streaming it live. [NHL.com]

Brad Richards to Dallas.

Jason Campbell to Sharks.

Colorado thinks its 1996.

Washington actually made some decent moves.

Pens have a press conference at 4:30 pm

Thanks to Marty the Chicken for breaking the news.

We did hear someone is in the best shape of his life.

The Senators, Stars and Wild all have made a pitch for Penguins F Ryan Malone, according to the Ottawa Sun.
The paper said it's unlikely Pittsburgh would deal Malone even though he's due to be an unrestricted free agent after this season

decided to stop on by the official pens forums and I dont think i'm ever going back there. There seem to be a lot of Shero haters over there. they keep talking about how he's passing up all these deals and that he's too big of a pansey to make a deal.

Really, who here is disappointed with our performance so far this year? Sure, we could use a couple things. But in order to get those couple of things, we'd likely have to give up things we don't want to lose. We've got good chemistry all around, in the locker room and on the ice it seems, and we're contending for division/conference lead. I don't see a reason why we should jump down Shero's throat for not making any deals. Who says we'd be any better off if we switch out players? How much better can we possibly aim to be?

Stoosh said...

SPORTSNET.CA is reporting a rumor - unconfirmed - that Hossa has been dealt to the Pens.

Kukla's Korner has it up as well. Nothing confirmed yet, but Kukla's has been dead-on so far.

Not BigRickPSU said...

You know, I've been against the Hossa trade since the get go, but now that it is being reported, I find myself being a little excited by the possibility.

I hope we didn't give up Staal or Malone to get him.

(If it's true of course.)

The rumor all day was Hossa to Montreal for Ryder (pending UFA), Lapierre and prospect winger Mikhail Grabovski (a 5th round pick in 2004 who's rocketed up their depth chart).

If that's what Shero has to trump, my guess is that it could be something like Christensen, Goligoski and a first-rounder conditional on Hossa signing an extension.

Hooks Orpik said...

I don't think Hal Gill is going to be as cringe worthy as most do.

Sure he's a little Frankenstein-ish when he skates, but he's a big, pretty tough defenseman that can play 20 minutes a night and can kill penalties very well.

Gill blocks a ton of shots and fits well with what they need.

Dr. Turkleton said...

I'm probably in the minority...but like I've said before: I like Hal Gill as a better 5th, 6th dman than Scuds or Sydor & good PIM killer...

Sportsnet.ca is reporting the deal as:

Pittsburgh gets:
Marian Hossa
Pascal Dupuis

Atlanta gets:
Colby Armstrong
Erik Christensen
Angelo Esposito
Pens 1st-round pick

Thoughts...

First, I'm going to miss Army. He was my second most-favorite Pens player outside of Sid and maybe Malkin. I'd like to think a guy like him is easily replaceable, but I'm not sure he is. He had a role on this team that went well beyond being Sid's roommate, Sid's best friend, and the locker room resident prankster. He was very good at what he did on the ice. I'm going to hate seeing Army out there skating for another team. I'm hoping Ryan Stone gets the first crack to take his spot.

Second, I said in response to Flyer Hater yesterday that two NHL roster players and two first-round picks (Espo + this year's pick) would be too much for Hossa. I'll stand by that, but I'd be lying if I said I'm not excited about this deal.

Third, I hope this silences any of the chowderheads who complained for the better part of the last two years that Shero "never does anything". Tons of Shero detractors over at LGP criticized Shero for not making a big signing last summer when it clearly wasn't time to do that. I hope none of these same asshats are over there now complaining about how much Shero gave up.

Fourth, they need to sign Hossa. With Staal and Fleury likely to earn less than what we originally thought, I'm hoping this is possible.

Finally, I've always wanted to hear John Barbaro yell "Pascaaaaaal...Duuuuupweeeeeeeeeeeeee!" at the arena.

Now I get my chance.

Doppler said...

looks like a first pick was also part of the deal.

Sakic19 said...

Stunned...This trade very well could make or break Shero...Just hope they don't fall into the Tampa Bay trap and have three players signed that take up a bulk of the team...the defense did get better though...and at least they're not like the Avs and are trying to party like its 2001 again

I can't imagine anyone wouldn't be excited to play with Sid and Malkin. He could put up some huge numbers here with set up guys like that. He's a finisher and EC and Army weren't. Also, he might not be a rental if he works well enough into the system. Those are high hopes, but if this is his best fit, maybe he'd reevaluate his options in order to stay...

definitely going to miss army. was pumped about espo especially since roy has played him as a winger this year, but we are deep at center right now and have a great fourth liner in talbot. so unless he was going to become a solid nhl wing he would struggle making the team.

we were 10.6 million under the cap, not sure what effect army and crusher leaving will have on that.

i dont think its out of the question that we would be able to keep him. i think shero must think there is a shot at that to give away so much future (espo, pick).

but in the end. this is a guy who has scored over 30 goals in all but his first two full nhl seasons. he has been one of the most consistent scorers in the league the past six or seven seasons. he is the kind of player we were missing.

Many ifs to consider here:
If the pens win the cup, the trade is worth it, if not, was it?

If Hossa resigns the pens have three of the best players in the league, but what if his signing disallows the team to resign its important role players like Malone, Staal, etc...?

Remember this is the salary cap NHL, not your older brothers where teams like Detroit, Colorado, and the Rangers could stack there rosters with high priced mercenaries every year and not think twice about it...this team was very close to leaving not too long ago, and I have heard has a tight budget that isn't near the salary cap ceiling...so kudos to Ray Shero for having a pair of Roberts the size of watermellons for pulling it off, but Hossa probably won't be a Pen past this summer

FireFox said...

FireFox = stunned

I really never thought we would get Hossa. As for the price we paid for him, I'm unsure. Espo and the 1st round pick I am okay with. We have tons of young players and I just got the feeling Espo would go all Kris Beech on us.

I said before Christensen needed to be traded. We have tons of centers and he just didn't put up much production. We will miss him on the shootout but the idea is to win without having to go to shootout. Besides, we have Ruutu and LeGame.

I'm sad about Army. I really liked the guy. He was a solid role player that was valued on this team. But you have to give to get.

I am most concerned with the ability to keep Hossa. If we can't keep him next year under his UFA, then I will be pissed we traded away those guys for nothing.

Obviously someone in the head office said it was okay to spend more money which is why they went for someone like Hossa. I hate to say this but it is almost a certainty that Gary Roberts and his 2.5mil salary will not return next year even if he is healthy. I will await his fatal slapshot to deliver me to my resting place now.

WWGRD? trade army and EC for hossa, that's what.

Everyone that's old enough to remember, get in your way-back machine and travel to the 90-91 season. When Patrick pulled the trigger on all those deals for the back-to-back cups, he gave up some popular, productive players. As painful as it was to see "our" guys go, would you trade the feeling at the end of those seasons to have "our" nice players back? Not me.

Who knows what Esposito will be. Colby, as fun as he was, really didn't set the world on fire this year and you have to give up something to get something. I'm sure Sid will be able to pick up the pieces and not miss a beat. Christensen is a great shoot-out,
3rd line guy who everyone questioned with regards to his confidence. Hopefully we just win in regulation and won't have to rely on his skills going foward. I'm okay with Hossa in a shoot-out situation, too. Let's not forget Gill either. Big O and Big D at the deadline.

I'm certainly going to miss Army too, but you can't be timid if you're the GM of a potential contender. I don't necessarily think we gave up too much for Hossa, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Shero try to trade Hossa at the draft if it looks like the Pens aren't going to be able to re-sign him. Armstrong and Christensen are probably going to be career third-liners, Esposito's a total wild card, could be great, could be horrible, and draft picks are always crap shoots. If you have a lousy GM, you end up with picks like Patrik Stefan #1 overall. The young player whose name got mentioned who should not under any circumstances have been dealt was Jordan Staal, because he's actually shown NHL-level ability. Including him in this Hossa deal would've been mortgaging the Pens' future.

I'm a lot more fired up for the playoffs than I was around lunch time, that's for damn sure. Let's go Pens!

Dr. Turkleton said...

@po
here's the sportsnetwork review of Dupuis:
ASSETS: Plays the game with tremendous energy and combativeness. Is versatile enough to play any forward position or any role required. Still owns offensive upside.
FLAWS: Needs to bury more of his chances around the goal area in order to take his game to another level. Is too inconsistent in the NHL.
CAREER POTENTIAL: Third line winger.

last 2 games averaged about 16 minutes of icetime & was on the PK unit...a Max Talbot type, IMO

I like the Penguins' chances of re-signing Hossa in the offseason. Now that every seat in the old barn is being sold, you can afford to raise the budget, especially with the spectre of the new arena on the horizon.

@sakic19: The team is about $10 million under the salary cap. There is certainly room for Hossa along with whatever Malkin will eventually garner.

Incredible day for Penguins fans, and this is from one of the biggest EC supporters/believers out there. Painful decisions must be made if a team dares to reach for new heights. Hope they re-sign Army in the summer, though.

The idea of hearing John Barbaro say/scream "Pascal Dupuis" has me excited too...

anyone know if the 4:30 press conference is being broadcast online at all?

Dr. Turkleton said...

@po....

yes...penguins.nhl.com

23 trades, 43 players, 22 draft picks. Fourth-busiest deadline day ever. So much for the death of the deadline...

who's getting bumped from the flash for hossa?

geezer said...

Wow. Double Wow. Did this really happen? Man Hossa is a bona fide finisher people. Shero is building this team now to do some damage. I like these moves. Armie leaving hurts though. Wow. I see goals, lots of them! I see a big guy flattening people in front of the net.

Sakic19 said...

matt gajtka...I hope you are right man, keeping Hossa and everone else would be great, I just don't want this team to be like Tampa Bay, where you have to worry about the big three and no one else

stokes said...

canaan: i'd have to say Charlie. he didn't make out with an Senators while they were in town this weekend? His inconsistency shouldn't allow it. Sorry charlie.

The Seeker said...

Dupuis plays the PK and has something like 3-4 shorthanded goals this year.

He's quick.

He's also been used in shootouts and has done pretty well.

wallflower said...

Gill kind of sucks. And, really, it makes the defense no more physical as Therrien will scratch Orpik to play Gill...and though Gill can play the PK (assuming MT does so), he's super slow.

I can't even talk about Army. :(

Mike Georger said...

so do we think orpik will take the hatchet for hal? i personally would rather see scuderi bumped

Steve In Denver said...

Charlie never gets bumped. He does the bumpin'.

TSN comments on the Hossa deal are hilarious. Half are from po'd Montreal and Ottawa fans. A third are from jealous onlookers saying the Pens paid too much.

@APK...if you hear a knock on your door, don't open it. Gary Roberts is not happy with your active imagination.

Not BigRickPSU said...

@mike georger:

Scuds has played terrific lately. You almost never hear his name mentioned -- which is perfect for a d-man going against the other team's top line.

It is Orpik or Sydor getting the seat for sure.

Dr. Turkleton said...

@nathan....

maybe next year, I'll just need to take a ½ day & be sure I'm home by 2:00p !!!!!

I went over to the ATL boards to see their reaction:

• surprised to even get on
• they seem to dislike losing out on Dupuis, saying he's hard working, etc...probably how we're initially 'missing' Crusher & Army

I remember Dupuis mostly in a Minny sweater & I liked his hard-nosed approach...like Max, Rene 'Champagne' Corbet [for those who remember him]

Mike Georger said...

im getting what sounds like 20 people talking on the presser feed. anyone else?

jaos said...

seeing army go almost makes me want to shed a tear

Nathan said...

I'm really glad I took the day off. I'm sure I would've done something unprofessional (aside from the obvious transgression of watching Tradecentre with the sound off) once that Hossa deal dropped. I took a victory lap around my living room when that deal got announced.

I can't wait to hear one of these folks say something they shouldn't have said...I'm suprised they're feeding the pre-conference buzz.

Can't wait to get home and crack a celebratory Fat Tire and watch the game.

I just realized something about bold moves. The Pens once moved their season-previous scoring leader, one Mark Recchi, for Kjell Samuelsson, Rick Tocchet and Ken Wregget. That worked out pretty well.

This alone is worth 2 draft picks (from nhl.com write-up):

"New York Rangers forward Jaromir Jagr said Gill is the hardest defenseman for him to play against because Gill lays his body on Jagr and slows him considerably. Over the course of a game against Gill, Jagr loses power like an old Ford with valve problems."

Right about now, Shero needs a swift punch to the cunt.

We just traded away two of my favorite players. But for us to throw away Esposito and a first round pick? What the fuck.

I'm on GDC too, as "GhostofRecchi". I've never seen commenterblog explode like this. I don't even remember if it went this nuts last year at the deadline.

Johnny Wrath said...

This move needed to be made at the very least before next season. I was thinking that the prices won't be so steep in the summer and scouts had more time to assess this summer's draf eligible players with the GMs, but this is a dynamite move.

It alleviates an insane summer in 2009/2010 when we would have had 9 RFAs.

I know he could walk at season's end for nothing. Thing is, he should understand that in Pittsburgh he could have his 500th goal within 3 seasons, compete for Lord Stanley annually, and still get paid.

Or, he could be like Bill Guerin, who has made the most cash in the last 15 years and hasn't accomplished a goddamn thing.

Nathan said...

I've given my defense of this trade both on this post, and in the comments of the last post. I'm sorry the guys who got traded got traded, but what everyone who's pissed at this deal because they liked Army, EC, or Espo need to realize that this is business, not personal. And with prospects/draft picks, especially ones who have never played an NHL game, there's no guarantee they're ever going to amount to anything.

what did Shero have to say??

PittHockey said...

jtc:

Shero said he's working on balancing the present and future.

Seeing as Shero is a master of time and space, it's no problem.

the dude said...

"It's not personal, Sonny. It's strictly business."

hossa>armstrong. c'mon, who would you rather see next to crosby. him or hossa?

Pensgirl said...

I'm skeptical that giving up three first-rounders for a rental was a good idea, but I'm more than happy to be proven wrong, and I'm certainly not going to gnash my teeth over it.

I also have long felt that Colby's value came more in the locker room than on the ice. I've sort of looked at him as being this team's Stevens, strictly in the rah-rah sense. I don't know if anyone else can fill that role, but 1) Shero's closer to the team than any of us is and 2) he hasn't struck me as stupid, so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Anything we think about "team chemistry" is nothing better than an educated guess, so...we'll see.

I'm keeping the jury out until at least the second week of March, once everything really settles down and guys get used to the change.

Nothin' to do but buckle up and hang on for the ride.
