Is Ray Shero shopping for goalies?

Bob Mckenzie says yes, the Pens are looking into their goaltending situation. [ TSN ]

Expectations are high in Pittsburgh. If they're going to take the next step in their evolution as a contender, they must get some big-time goaltending and Fleury has yet to provide it consistently. Back-up Dany Sabourin is apparently not the answer.

He may be on to something.
But Mckenzie can't even analyze his own feces.
It is still early.

Ray Shero doesn't run a blog or post on message boards.
He knows what's going on. No need to get all flipped out over it.

Plus, if the Pens really need a goaltender:

Ken Wregget is ready.

Fleury speaks his frustrations. [ Trib ]

A lot of people are still steaming after the Wednesday game.
Rightfully so. We waited all summer for this.

One of the bigger problems we and some other people are having --
Mark Recchi and his playing time.

Now, look. We don't know anything.
We aren't respectable analysts or even humans.

"Recchi is a stand-up guy, blah blah blegh."

But this is unacceptable:

Devils game:
Recchi: 20:03 of ice time
Malkin: 14:30 of ice tme

This cannot happen. Also, some of the minutes, you would think, should go to Christensen.
He is way more of a threat to score right now.

Hopefully this changes, because someone may go postal if it ever happens again.

It's actually getting to the point where no one gets pumped if Recchi's the one carrying the puck into the zone.

Go pens!

p.s. im going to my f1rst game of the season tomorrow...w00t!

Damn, Mario's amazing. How many people would wait nearly a decade to get compensation like that? (I suppose if the team had folded, he wouldn't have gotten paid any faster, but still.)

...how many bottles of the good stuff you think that buys?

Nathan said...

You can't save a whiteout for the playoffs in Washington. There won't be any playoffs in Washington. The Pens coming to town is as close to a playoff atmosphere as that arena is going to see until the Pens come back in March. Of course, I have my own objections to teams using the whiteout idea, since it was Winnipeg's first, and then Phoenix co-opted it when they stole the franchise. But since Washington's other color is red, they can't use that because it would be stealing Calgary's idea. And "Come Dressed as an Empty Seat" night is every night in Washington. The best thing the Caps could do would be paper bag night where all their fans come with paper bags over their heads. That'd be fitting.

About 21 million if the "good stuff" is Boone's Farm.

Do you think Shero could talk Charles Wang into letting us have his General Manager to be our backup goalie? Abominable Snowman jokes are never not funny.

Loser Chris said...

People need to lay off of MAF. He's gotta be pressing enough as it is and there's nobody on the trade market even close to as good as him. Keep rolling him out there and let him work through it.

Trading Recchi for some help on D wouldn't be the worst thing in the world though...

Kristen PB said...

I'm not so ready to give up on Sabourin. His disappointing first performance could have been nerves and Therrien yanked him pretty quickly. He may have settled down later in the game and done well. I realize I may eat these words at some point, but I'm willing to give him another chance.

MAF has always been sort of unpredictable, just not in a bipolar (i.e. Thibault) way. I think we'll see him shape up soon.

Ryan Malone and Mark Recchi are the dead-weight players right now. Malone's behavior last game? Unacceptable.

BTW, I still think the Carolina logo looks like an ad for Drano.

snoopyjode said...

YIKES! that picture of gary roberts haunts me to my very core.

anyways, you've made an EXCELLENT POINT. yes, recchi scored some big goals last season. yes, he provides the young pens with valuable leadership and experience. yes, he's still an asset to the team in those respects. and absolutely yes, he's a great human... but he's past his prime physically. he's been causing as many turnovers as goals he has been scoring. and while he is still needed on the team, when he's seeing more ice time than evgeni frickin' malkin, there is a BIIIIIIIIIG PROBLEM.

the ONLY guy on that team right now that should be seeing more ice time than geno is sid.

Teej said...

With the way Geno has been playing his ass off lately (resulting in being the Pens' leading scorer), Bald Bull should NOT be playing as much as he has been - it's disgusting. He's been a liability for the Pens so far.

Christensen has enormous potential, and increasing his ice time can only mean good things for the Penguins.

Teej out...PEACE!

Troy Loney said...

Comrie didn't have the hat trick for the Isles, Guerin did. Ted Nolan's Indian witchcraft is kicking in on you guys. Plus it's raining today. Don't underestimate the powers of Nolan.

MummRaTheEverLiving said...

Christenson right now is wasted as a 4th line center. If his experiment at wing is truly a failure, it's time to package him off to somewhere where he can get top line center minutes. It helps neither the Pens or Crusher to have him in that position. That's why you signed Tim Brent.

Moostache Max's comment in that article that Madden's line may be the best third line in all of hockey holds true, but I don't know that his own is that far behind. I love the Max/Colby/Gary combo. That's a line that can kick your ass, beat your goalie, then go home and impregnate your wife.

Brett said...

I'm a huge Christensen fan, and I'm so glad that someone else out there thinks he deserves more ice time. Thank you, Pensblog!

I used to back up Recchi but yeah, I'm starting to wonder.. I mean his numbers so far this season woulndt be that bad... if he was playing on half as much ice time as he does..

Barrasso35 said...

I'm all for bringing Kenny Wregget out of retirement, he backstopped the Pens in some bigtime games (4OT, anyone?)

I love Rex but he's too old now. Trade him, have him retire then bring him back as an assistant coach. That way he's still here to lend support and experience to the younger players but won't actually be on the ice.

nathan"Come Dressed as an Empty Seat" night is every night in Washington.

That's classic.

Let's Go Pens!

Stephen said...

First Caps-Pens game in DC last year the Caps marketing department put pics of Sid, captioned "I'm Thirsty" in all the urinals. Kinda funny. Tough for Pens fans, who actually pee standing up, to do that to Sid; Caps fans had no such problem. Wonder what they'll do this year . . . ?

Stoosh said...

The Fleury bashing is making me nauseous like I just drank a homewrecker of Old Grand-Dad. Has he been letting in goals he normally would stop (such as goals #1 and #2 the other night)? Sure. Does he need to be more reliable? Sure. But MAF doesn't turn 23 for another five or six weeks, and he's already had two seasons as a #1 goaltender at the game's highest level.

When Martin Brodeur was just turning 23, he was just completing his first "full season" as a #1 goaltender. That was the lockout season of 1994-95 when he played 40 of the team's 48 reg. season games. He actually didn't get a standard full season in as a #1 until the following year.

Who else? Hmmm...Marty Turco. When Turco was 22 going on 23, he was completing his senior year at Michigan. He didn't approach fulltime NHL #1 until 2002-03, when dude was already 27.

Let's go to the top...Roberto Luongo. Turned 23 in April of 2002, when he was just completing his first season as a fulltime NHL #1 with Florida (58 games played in the 01-02 season...the first time he played more than 50 games in an NHL season).

The other day, when someone on ESPN Radio 1250 cautioned against the Fleury bashing because he's still relatively young, I heard Guy Junker respond by mentioning Patrick Roy and Tom Barrasso. Roy was 20 when he helped take the Habs to a Cup in 1985-86 and Barrasso won the Vezina when he was 18.

First off, if the best that Fleury critics can come up with is the best goaltender of all time and a complete historical anomaly, then maybe we just ain't so bad off now, are we?

COULD Fleury play at an exceptionally-high caliber despite his age simply because Barrasso once won a Vezina when he was 18 years old? Absolutely. Just like one day I COULD find myself locked in a room with a drunk and willing Scarlett Johannson. Possible? Yep. Unlikely? Damn straight.

Junker needs whacked with a Koho for not realizing the absurdity of those comparisons.

Loser Chris said...

Well done Stoosh, well done!

By the way, some guy on ESPN.com just picked MAF as the guy most likely to break Broduer's streak of 30 win seasons (which is at 11 and going strong).

The one upside I do see to MAF struggling a little bit is that hopefully it will allow Shero to re-sign him to a more affordable long-term deal. The more cap space the better!

Loser Chris said...

Just for old time's sake...

All the MAF haters need to take a deep breath. And then focus that hate where it belongs... Mark Recchi.

Mike said...

The best way to forget about Wednesday's piece of shit game is a convincing victory tonight against a pretty, pretty good carolina team. Then we don't have to think of those asshole ref's until spring when we are battling for a division title.

Steve In Denver said...

I hope the goalie rumors are a ploy to help the team rally around Fleury. It's not like he's getting much help. However, the rebounds and the puckhandling are huge problems. Maybe it's those ugly RBK pads. Every time he looks down, it's gotta be like staring into the sun. That's got to be distracting.

The guy is a pro. He gets paid. He should be solid in all aspects of the game. In fact, he should be chipping in on offense, too. And fighting. And selling shit in the stands. And taking your cash at the booth in the lower lot.

Nathan's "come as an empty seat" Caps promotion ---> Hilarious. Probably works for NJ, too. And with all the free agent pickups and promise of a cup in Philly, it was nice to see so many empty seats for their game last night on Center Ice. Way to go Flyers fans!

Hooks Orpik said...

Caps fans still up to their old tricks

Like Charlie Brown running at the football, these guys will never learn, do not try to job Crosby.

PS: Let's all remember how Sidney is "Gretzky-ing" Ovechkin in head to head meetings. Meaning, he has more assists (9) than Ovechkin has points (8).

Hooks Orpik said...

Also, last night's official attendence for the Caps game: 11,036.

You could put a NHL matchup in a Winnipeg parking lot at 2 in the morning and get more than 11,000 people. What a joke.

stating the obvious... said...

If you're an older player like Recchi, your ice time should be diminishing so that the time you do get is actually productive and so that you're still functional towards the end of the season.

Malkin's a young stud who's already a dominant force and should be on the ice as soon as he catches his breath.

Thanks for showing the ice times because I didn't recall seeing Recchi's bald dome as much as that ice time indicates or perhaps he wasn't doing anything to get noticed.

Solid blog...

The Seeker said...

We need to see Talbot's picture at the top of Pensblog (in that mouseover thingy) with his stats too.

Recchi's there (?), Staal (with 0) is there.... but the team's leader in goals isn't?

I'm tossin' a mousepad at Pensblog for the omission!

Barrasso35 said...

You're right, stoosh, thanks for bringing me back to reality. For a second I was almost considering getting a Roberts jersey, rather than a MAF jersey. While an argument could be made for either (especially with the alternate captain "A" on the Roberts) it's best to stick with my tradition and go with the goaltender.

Christina said...

stoosh, that's awesome.

geno's playing lights-out right now, there's no reason rex should be getting more minutes than him, and especially that wide of a margin. my first reaction was that it was due to all the PK time from wednesday...but then i realized that NEITHER geno nor rex kill penalties. so much for that.

i think rex can still have a role ON the team...but that role is no longer first-line minutes and expectations.

In that Gary Roberts Mortal Kombat picture, it's refreshing to see that a fatality was performed on Arron Asham. I would have guessed that Gary Roberts would have had a "flawless victory" though!

Ya, I played Mortal Kombat back in the day! :)

Why don't we just give Recchi 60 minutes of ice time while we're at it.....

Fleury sounded like he was going to cry in a interview after the Devils game. You can tell he's just really frustrated with himself. Danny Potash tried to cheer him up. That being said...

Who's going to the game!? Get a FLEURY chant going up in the Igloo!! He needs all the support and confidence he can get!!

Pass the word on!

morgantown---That is most excellent. Could you imagine if a Penguin got a hat trick? That would be incredible to watch all the Pens fans litter the ice with the Caps own promotion. Plus it will save me from losing a hat.

green----That is really cool. JW, but what section did you get? I would imagine they are probably pretty good. But that is a great story. I don't think, for instance, you'd really hear of Ben R. or any Steelers doing that. (No offense yinzers, just sayin' is all)

Stoosh got it right. For right now, Fleury is getting back into the season, and a lot of people are putting far too much blame on him right now. They're neglecting that 50% of goal tending is dependent on the defense keeping the puck away from the net.

I think everyone needs to road trip down to DC and student rush a Capitals game. It should make for one hell of an interesting game :D

Props to Mario though, it should be tits to get a 21mil paycheck after a decade.

Tonights game should be interesting, and I'm hoping we're not going to get jobbed like we did against the Devils.

I'm curious to those who can actually make it to the games: has the Steeler jersey appearances dwindled off, or do I still need to start bashing faces with a hockey stick?
