Ramble On

Friday, 9:00am.
Camp Therrien begins.

Quite frankly, we cannot wait.
He looks like he's about to give someone the Razor's Edge.

Training Campblog

The Pens invited 14 prospects from the rookie tourney to camp. [ Trib ]

We linked Letang yesterday.
And now here are the rest of the Post-Gazette's looks at the big names in Kitchener.

[ Jonathan Filewich ]

[ Ryan Stone ]

On his wrist injury:

"Just in the gym, [doing] a couple of things, it kind of lingers. But you're not bench-pressing when you're playing hockey."

[ Tyler Kennedy ]

..........................................................

Matthew Nelson sent this our way:

A Red Wing goalie at rookie camp.

The guy doesn't deserve our time to even find out what his name is or provide a link.
If he's picking #66 because Lemieux is his idol, then the dude shouldn't be playing goalie.

Dick.

.....................................................

One person you don't want to mess with: Raitis Ivanans. [ Battle of California ]

That is scary.

You know what's coming...

Ron Newcomer and his friend Scott Baio aren't impressed.

Newcomer Sneak Peek

Matthew G. Jones

Good news for people who want to Photoshop but don't want to buy/download it.
A bare-bones online application is in the works. [ Gizmodo ]

** We found that link courtesy of Digg.com.

For those not familiar with Digg, it's a community that finds the coolest stuff on the internet every day and "diggs" it so other people can see it, too.

Our goal in the coming weeks is to properly plant Ron Newcomer's site on there.
A lot of people would be interested in it.

.......................................................................

The Islanders hire Mike Dunham to be the goalie coach. [ Fanhouse ]

Two funny reactions to this story.

1 . Seth at Empty Netters with the best reaction joke about this story.

"Former Penguin Garth Snow, also a former Islanders netminder, is the general manager. At this rate, Tommy Soderstrom is going to be in charge of ticket sales." [ Empty Netters ]

Gold.
Anytime anyone drops a Tommy Soderstom reference, we're linking it.

Maybe one of the worst goalies of all time...wearing one of the worst jerseys of all time.
Gave up Lemieux's 500th goal on a jobber wrister from the slot.

2. Waiting for Stanley with this outstanding photoshop. [ Waiting for Stanley ]

Knowledgeblog

If you latched on to use of the word "pwn" without knowing its origin (like we did),
we dug up some things. [ Wiki ]

As we suspected before we searched, it had something to do with "P" and "O" being in close proximity to one another on a keyboard.

It involved a World of Warcraft-esque game where, when you got beat,
a message came across the screen that said "you got owned."

But someone messed up or something,
and the message read "you got pwned."

Odds are we are wrong on this.
If anyone can shed some light on this in Commentblog, please do.

OPENING FACEOFF COUNTDOWN

Scored some big goals.

Also in the running:
Ian Moran
Ville Neimenen
Lyle Odelein

Scott Baio gave me pink-eye. Really. I found out that I have pink eye today, and I think Scott Baio gave it to me.

Or maybe it was Ron Newcomer.

Thanks guys. A Mark Fitzpatrick reference just wouldn't have the same delivery.

pwned is a disgrace to the internet

Can you disgrace the internet???

I believe your information about pwned is correct... at least that is what I have always heard.

#23 = Steve McKenna

Your info on pwned is correct.

One day I was wondering about pwned myself, so I looked it up on Urban Dictionary. The argument the people defining pwned are having is pretty funny.

i respectfully disagree on the origin of the word. while WoW has popularized the term, it's origin lies in test servers of counterstrike -- an mmo that started beta testing in 1999. counterstrike (or CS) used the phrase "you got owned" as their screen text when a player died. The beta server (i can't remember if it was beta server 1 or 2) misspelled the word 'owned' and it caught on in the server. a lot of those beta testers went on to beta test WoW servers in 2k1. the progression was natural -- the explosion of the word, however, was not. its used quite commonly today, surprisingly.

ipwn.

p.s. #23 has to be mckenna...he was a captain (for 1 game) for god's sake.

Troy Loney >> Ian Moran

Good call on that one. Moran worked hard, but as Clark's dad said in Christmas Vacation, "So do washing machines." Moran did three things well - work his ass off, ice the puck and sing the national anthem. I know he was a fan favorite and he's a good guy, but being a good guy never helped him clear the crease. And he would've had a hard time moving my 11-year old nephew out of the crease.

For the #23, the first thought would go to Kjell. I say go the next step and pick Steady Freddy Olausson.

Donning the #23 for eleven glorious games in 1998-99 - Viktor Ignatiev.

#23, part of the trade that showed Craig's brass of a riverboat gambler: Kjell Samuelsson

Teej said...

#23 should be the 1992 Kjell Samuelsson.

Hooks Orpik said...

Can't go wrong with Kjell or the original Big Joke; Steve McKenna.

But if there's a pic of Newcomer with Michael Jordan than obviously there you have it.

wilsmith said...

yeah, pwn has been around way longer than wow.

go to the wiki page about l33t speak, its hilarious.

good thing I brought my cans of pwnage for these nubcaeks.

Crappy Bruins and Versus analyst Andy Brickley wore #23 in Pittsburgh. But I'd still go with McKenna or Kjell.

You forgot the greats: John Jakopin, Steve Leach, and the infamous Viktor Ignatjev.

Iggy for #23!!!!!!111!!!!11one

Another photoshop-ish program you can download is Gimp. www.gimp.org. It's all free. Not the same layout as Photoshop, but most of the same functions.

#23 has to be McKenna. One of my favorite Penguins quotes ever is when he went on his goal scoring "tear" in 2002 - 2003 (I think) and Kovalev, while laughing himself, said something like "He's scoring so much that if he keeps it up it won't be funny anymore."

gotta be kjell

Would Digg'ing Newcomer be a good idea? Remember he's running the show from a geocities site, which is notorious for having limited bandwidth. If it makes it onto Digg, he'll lose his allotted bandwidth for the month within hours.

Then again, you could link to his myspace account, which would have his page views going through the roof.

There's hope for non-canadian teams after all!

Mick McGoon is retiring after this season.

Praise Allah.

The biggest officiating disgrace I've ever witness was last year's Blues/Senators game when McGoon fucked it all to hell.

Digg'ing Newcomer would be a bad idea. Much like the razor's edge, the Digg effect is devastating.

That Detroit goalie needs to be paid a visit by Georges and Jarko. The Detroit equipment manager should be shot for sewing that number on there.

NHL 08 looks awesome. I just picked up my copy and can't wait to get home and beat the piss out of Ottawa. I put together a kick ass custom cover with Gary Roberts. I'll post later.

good call on loney. isn't 66 retired league wide? does not apply to training camp numbers or what?

Don K. Show said...

Can you disgrace the internet? Unfortunately, yes.

The descriptions are more than enough. No pictures needed, esp since it's NSFAnyone.

No doubt go with Odelin tomorrow, talk about disgraceblog

good call on shutting down digg.
people have to know about this somehow.

one person not mentioned in the #23 talks was a terd that i remember just because he scored two goals in a game i went to against the nordiques.

defenseman -- chris joseph.

we're digging up a pic of Viktor Ignatiev.

We'd pick Kjell, but he's STILL playing the pass in the 1993 Game 7.

demondg1,

can you please send me your template for the NHL 08 cover? I'd really appreciate it!

Loser Chris said...

Oh, as for #23... didn't Paul Stanton switch to 23 after Rick Tocchet switched to 22? Stanton = definition of solid.

Lloyd said...

NHL 08 is money in the bank.

Roberts got my first goal and penalty... but didnt help in the shootout.

NHL 08 is indeed money in the bank.

Roberts scored my first goal as well. Anyone else a little pissed at how bad they made Eaton?
